Breaking: Fox cancels O.J. book, interview

Just across on FNC.

Update: They should air this in the timeslot instead:

A shameless O.J. Simpson admitted in a 2004 videotaped conversation that he’d do or say anything to make a buck.

“If it’s something for me to promote, I’d go on Geraldo’s show. I don’t give a f- – -,” the disgraced gridiron great boasts in a documentary interview that has never aired.

“Just as long as you’re talkin’ about me and helping me make some money – ha ha ha!”

Update: The Goldman family’s O.J. petition received 45,000+ signatures in four days.

Update: Nice to see bottom-feeder Judith Regan embarrassed here, too. Unfortunately, the Juice is probably still going to get paid.

Update: You can thank the affiliates who pulled out over the weekend:

Historically, affiliates topple like dominoes after the first bows out, and the decision by Pappas and Lin broadcasting over the weekend leave the fate of the Nov. 27 and 29 special, dubbed by one critic as “the most despicable sweeps-month stunt in history,” up in the air.

Glad to know this. Thanks for the post.

Good.

americanpundit on November 20, 2006 at 3:29 PM

‘Bout friigin time!!!! But did any money change hands anyway? He isn’t worth a penny!

JohnnyD on November 20, 2006 at 3:32 PM

Ah man! Where else am I going to go for mind numbing thoughtless entertainment…. oh, right… the Democrats won control of Congress, nevermind.

jasnell on November 20, 2006 at 3:33 PM

A little common sense from the media, at last.

FoxNews has been saying over and over that it is separate from Fox Media and that it had nothing to do with the airing– lefties were emailing and calling them to complain.

Now they’ll probably scream about supressing O.J.’s rights.

mesablue on November 20, 2006 at 3:33 PM

Here comes the ACLU, I can see it now

flyboy777 on November 20, 2006 at 3:38 PM

Good for Fox.

Look for some ratings starved network like MSNBC to pick it up. Olberdouche would probably happily do the interview, especially since it was Fox that cancelled.

thirteen28 on November 20, 2006 at 3:38 PM

Think Olby, or anyone, will give O’Reilly even a little credit for this?

Mallard T. Drake on November 20, 2006 at 3:38 PM

It’s obvious this is blatant racism. How dare whitey deny a black man the chance to earn a buck!

jaleach on November 20, 2006 at 3:40 PM

Olberdouche would probably happily do the interview

And try to blame O’Reilly — Olbergasm!

mesablue on November 20, 2006 at 3:41 PM

w00t

StoutRepublican on November 20, 2006 at 3:43 PM

Rumor has it OJ is not available as he will be at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood to watch Michael Richards.

Wade on November 20, 2006 at 3:45 PM

Actually OJ will be on the gold course searching for the real killers

Child In Time on November 20, 2006 at 3:46 PM

Good to hear. I guess even Rupe realized the income created would not outweigh the negative PR Fox would generate.

Constantine on November 20, 2006 at 3:47 PM

Olbermeister will be blaming Bush and making an Oreilly connection..

There is someone with some common sense at Fox..

Viper1 on November 20, 2006 at 3:47 PM

They should air a live shot of Judith Regan writing “I Will Never Try to Profit from a Sensational Murder Case Again” on a big chalkboard over and over until the 2 hours are up. Obviously she’d never keep her promise, but it’d be nice to see.

Jim Treacher on November 20, 2006 at 3:49 PM

Great idea, Jim T.

mikeyboss on November 20, 2006 at 3:51 PM

I guess even Rupe realized the income created would not outweigh the negative PR

Actually, I’m guessing it was cancelled because no one would sponsor it (i.e. no income.)

db on November 20, 2006 at 3:52 PM

Let’s not forget that Channel 4 in Britain went ahead with its Bush assassination special.

mymanpotsandpans on November 20, 2006 at 3:55 PM

It should be replaced with a Live broadcast of OJ’s execution at the hands of Fred Goldman.

I bet Judith Regan would get faint trying to count the profits on the PPV for that one.

JayHaw Phrenzie on November 20, 2006 at 4:00 PM

Good for O’Reilly. Good for Fox. Will Olberkind or Al Franken give them credit?

Entelechy on November 20, 2006 at 4:03 PM

Wait, wait, it was never meant to run. Karl Rove had an arrangement with Fox to say they’d run it, so as to get the credit for not running it…

Entelechy on November 20, 2006 at 4:05 PM

Killed.

Was its throat slit? Was the killer wearing bloody gloves? Was the investigator a raaaaaaaaacist? Was there a chase in a white Bronco?

In that case, I question the timing.

urbancenturion on November 20, 2006 at 4:07 PM

Raaaacist. Not really. I just thought I’d be a smartass and say it. Although, I wouldn’t be surprised if some whack job in the media calls it. Good to see News Media get their priorities straight finally.

vcferlita on November 20, 2006 at 4:08 PM

I’m amazed at the fact that this special was even a consideration of any news organization. Let alone, paying Orange Juice for this “hypothetical” book.

Troy Rasmussen on November 20, 2006 at 4:12 PM

When the affiliates go, you yank the show.

Kid from Brooklyn on November 20, 2006 at 4:14 PM

What’ll be banned next? The mark foley special on how to pick up 13 year old kids online? Fascists.

lorien1973 on November 20, 2006 at 4:26 PM

Actually, I’m guessing it was cancelled because no one would sponsor it (i.e. no income.)

Come on. Its tailor made for Ford Bronco commercials. Vidalia chop wizard commercials. Steak knife commercials. Italian boots. Lots of sponsors would love to sponge on here!

lorien1973 on November 20, 2006 at 4:28 PM

It should be replaced with a Live broadcast of OJ’s execution at the hands of Fred Goldman.

OOOOHH… I’d love to see this, but I’m opposed to the death penalty. Thanks for the moral dilemma!

Constantine on November 20, 2006 at 4:28 PM

Nice to see bottom-feeder Judith Regan embarrassed here, too. Unfortunately, the Juice is probably still going to get paid.

…isn’t there a civil judgment against Simpson making his profits the property of the Goldman family? I haven’t cared enough about this case to keep current.

As to the faceless bottom-feeder, I found a face, and it is indeed that of a bottom-feeder. Furthermore, from Wikipedia’s bio on her:

“In 1978, while working as a secretary at Harvard, Regan answered a newspaper ad for a reporter for The National Enquirer. She got the job.”

…telling….

“She issued an eight-page defense of the (OJ) deal, entitled Why I Did It, in which she confessed to being a battered wife and that she felt the spirit of the slain couple in the room with her as she spoke to Simpson.”

…creepy…and self-serving….

“According to The Daily Telegraph in London, she is ‘the enfant terrible of American publishing’, with some critics calling her the ‘angriest woman in the media’. Vanity Fair magazine called her a ‘foul-mouthed tyrant’,”

…nice…very nice…what would one expect?

Let’s hope that this registers a loss both for Mr. Simpson and for Ms. Regan…I like to see the deserving get justice, especially when the dead are denied it….

Puritan1648 on November 20, 2006 at 4:31 PM

I wonder when it will hit UTube….

Dr. Gecko on November 20, 2006 at 4:32 PM

I wasn’t going to watch it anyway. But I was secretly hoping that the intervier would conclude the interview by spitting in his face. Something like:

“Thank you for your time Mr Simpson. Hock Poo!”

jman on November 20, 2006 at 4:36 PM

Good.

Bob's Kid on November 20, 2006 at 4:39 PM

I wasn’t going to watch it anyway.

Hear, Hear…

I’d like to think that they pulled the plug because they caught a case of the morals but I suspect it was from all the backlash.

x95b10 on November 20, 2006 at 4:48 PM

If the advertisers won’t pay, the show gets ixnayed.

If the affiliates balk, the show takes a walk.

No show in Prime Time, Judith Regan is still slime.

If Fox gets grilled, the show gets killed.

YAY!

SouthernGent on November 20, 2006 at 4:58 PM

I wonder how the “Son of Sam” laws apply here. You know, the ones that say you cannot profit from your crime.

Since the Juice was found not guilty of the murder, that would appear to let him off the hook (and the book is all conjecture, right?).

But, he was found civilly responsible for the deaths, so that would seem to apply here. At the very least, the income should take a detour straight to the Goldman family who are still owed money.

I guess a lawyer would have a better answer than me.

DuffBeer on November 20, 2006 at 4:59 PM

Thank God!

Catie96706 on November 20, 2006 at 5:00 PM

Excellent news. Good for America. Good for the culture.

However, I understand Regan has another book and possible TV special in the works.

Evidently this is a collaboration with the Senior Senator from Masachusetts.

The working title is “Hell, I OJ’d my girlfriend and I didn’t even lose my license.”

The jury has spoken…

If it doesn’t fit crosses the line, you must acquit not air it.

flagwaver on November 20, 2006 at 5:31 PM

I’m glad that saner heads prevailed at Fox. OJ just isn’t good business…

E L Frederick (Sniper One) on November 20, 2006 at 5:40 PM

Doesn’t “bottom-feeder Judith Regan” bear some connection to a politician widely mentioned as a presidential candidate in 2008?

see-dubya on November 20, 2006 at 5:44 PM

There is a God, OJ is guilty, and Judith Regan will need to find another outlet to vent about her divorce.

Valiant on November 20, 2006 at 5:49 PM

Let’s not forget that Channel 4 in Britain went ahead with its Bush assassination special.

That was taxpayer-funded, right?

Jim Treacher on November 20, 2006 at 5:50 PM

More like bottom-licker Judith Regan. Douche…

Jaibones on November 20, 2006 at 5:52 PM

I guess he has squeezed the last life out of that …

Sorry, that sucked.

seejanemom on November 20, 2006 at 5:56 PM

Thats a good start.

Now, let’s get O.J.’s photos, trophies and other memorabilia removed from the USC campus and thrown out of the Hall of Fame in Canton. Let’s make the last O.J. special on national TV a ceremonial burning of everything dear to him, and have it hosted by Mark Fuhrman.

I dont want to see or hear this scum again in my lifetime.

Florida homestad laws. His pension and his house are safe. Everything else gets…redeployed.

Kid from Brooklyn on November 20, 2006 at 6:09 PM

Funny that Regan now justifies this based on her desire to have all men “confess” their sins against women.

Yeah, uh-huh.

…give O’Reilly even a little credit for this?

The big O had a bet with someonethat there would be no advertisers for this show. I thought he was going to lose. So, does he win the bet? It wont air now, no air = no ads.?.?

As for the judgement against the murderer from Southern Cal and Buffalo, he moved to Florida because of some law that protects his income or assets or something like that. Any Florida atty’s here today?

One of the better uses of the word “KILLED”

Bravo FOX

Texyank on November 20, 2006 at 6:33 PM

If only Charley Rangel would draft Orenthal, then have Special Forces parachute OJ into Tehran.

In a conservative burqa.

And see if he could explain his way out of that ‘mission’.

Who knows, maybe the real killer is in Iran?

(With OJ there, the odds sure go up.)

profitsbeard on November 20, 2006 at 7:29 PM

Good to hear. I guess even Rupe realized the income created would not outweigh the negative PR Fox would generate.

Constantine on November 20, 2006 at 3:47 PM

Negative PR, or negative cash flow? Somehow I think FOX Broadcasting would quickly recover with another Paris Hilton sex show.

thedecider on November 20, 2006 at 9:47 PM

From the last link above:

One station manager who had said he wouldn’t air the special said he was concerned that whether or not Simpson was guilty, he would still be profiting from murders.

“I have my own moral compass and this was easy,” said Bill Lamb, general manager of WDRB in Louisville.

Lamb is my new local hero! Well, not really, though I do applaud his decicion to drop the O.J. “attention ploy” special. And does anyone else see the pattern here? Fox News is out for both truth and profit. True, controversy sells, but too much controversy turns off audiences.

Ultimately, calculated business judgements dictate what we get to see. Frankly, I’m amazed John Stossel has managed to get his specials onto network primetime like, “Stupid in America” [The case for school vouchers] even more so than Glenn Beck getting his “Exposed: The Extremist Agenda” onto CNN. After all, CNN is battling against the image of anti-Americanism after showing enemy snipers shooting American Soldiers. To CNN that’s just “fair and balanced.”

– Kadnine in Louisville

PS – Guys? A preview button on Hot Air would be, like, super-cool and stuff. C’mon… All the grunge kids in Seattle are doing it… Please?

Kadnine on November 21, 2006 at 1:08 AM

Have you considered that maybe The Real Killer was making OJ confess?

Tantor on November 21, 2006 at 1:43 AM

You gotta love the Goldmans idea. The whole boycott web site concept is POTENT !!

sonnyspats1 on November 21, 2006 at 2:10 AM

I called several of the bookstores. Most said they would carry the book. I told’em that if they carried the book, I would throw it in the air. Call p.d. I’d hang my hat with a jury anywhere in the U.S. Thanks to all those who called or e-mailed that sanity prevailed.

Some things are so below a minimum decency level that visible outrage is the only adequate way to vent.
