Watched the trailer for “300″.
Seemed like nothing but more politically-correct, hiphop, newage garbage rewrite of history to me. I’m so tired of seeing “real” people (ie, people who lived before 1960) being portrayed just like modern folk (just with a funny way of talking.)
The Spartans would have spit on the audience for this movie (rightly so.)

Two of my favorite science fiction books are “Go Tell the Spartans” and “Prince of Sparta”, which tell of a future “low-intensity-conflict” on a faraway world. After reading them, I happily quote Leonidas, in that I would rather die for the possibility of that future Sparta, than be ruler of the U.S, or even the whole Earth.

Come on, “They’re billing it as an exhibition so they wouldn’t have to call it an execution!” “Heavy-duty punches that’ll rattle his ancestors!” “Balboasaurus!” That’s great stuff, man. This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen, but I’m there.

I said nothing negative about Sly’s movies or his life since 1967–again, I yam only tellin’ youse guys what I seen an’ heard, um, you know?

There is a scene in the airport terminal that includes a mock poster of a movie, Rocky XXXVIII, with a picture of a scranny old man in oversized boxing trunks and huge boxing gloves held in the overhead “victory” pose, on a pilar.

You have to look sharply, though, to catch it.

That’s what this trailer reminded me of.

You all should have seen Stallone forty years ago in Switzerland: a short skinny chain-smoking greasy-haired bum ( in the old school sense: a guy with no place of his own and had no money ) whose primary skills were chugging beer and getting turned town by upper-middle-class American gals who hadn’t come to Europe for a “Year Abroad” to have some Long Island gumbah grab their ass.

It was actually 600,000 Persians. This movie is about the battle of Thermopylae, the name of the 60 foot wide mountain pass where it took place. This is where the famous phrase “MOLON LABE!” (Come and get them) was said.

I hope Frank Miller does justice to the history of what happened. It should be a very good movie.

The acting looks horrible.

Anyway, there’s no more important battle in western history. If you want a fantastic and eminently readable novel on the subject, read “Gates of Fire” by Steven Pressfield.

I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Incidentally, there were far more than 300 Greek freemen and slaves defending Thermopylae: 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, and an indeterminate number of slaves.
