Touch the Top of the World is one of the most inspirational stories I’ve ever encountered. I had the chance to meet Erik at a speaking event in San Francisco in August of this year, and it was quite remarkable. He’s amazingly funny, moving, and interesing.

During his preparation for the Everest Assault, he and two friends scaled a corkscrew spire in Moab, Utah named Ancient Art. The two friends are Mark Wellman, paralyzed from the waist down, who climbs in a body-sling using only his arms, and Hugh Herr, a double-leg amputee who became a doctor so he could learn to design his own prosthetics.
“Three gimps go climbing” was how they referred to that trip. Follow the link, and click on any of the photos in the lower half of the page to start a slide show. It’s worth the click.

Anyone who could listen to Erik speak and ever again think that life is more barrier than opportunity is someone to be pitied. He sat and signed every copy of his book bought that day, and the script in mine simply says “Reach!”

For anyone who never heard the military acronym NBC, it stands for Nuclear Biological Chemical, todays WMD acronym. That soldier/marine didn’t misspeak. It just sounds funny taken out of that context.

Oh, you guys have got to see this! Some things never change… It’s almost at the very end, the second to last clip, and it begins right at 6:00. He appears to be a soldier in the Gulf War, but regardless of the conflict, he nails it.

That is good unintentional funny.
