OlbyWatch has it. Between Johnny Dollar’s comments, Robert Cox’s open letter, the boss’s latest, and today’s Vent, there isn’t much left to say. Except this: Olby’s apology reminds me a lot of the L.A. Times bringing the hammer down on Michael Hiltzik for sock puppetry insofar as it uses contrition for a lesser sin as cover for a greater one. Patterico explained it this way:
So Cathy Seipp says that L.A. Times editors are searching Hiltzik’s work for past evidence of dishonesty…
Dishonest? You bet — in the same way that Hiltzik has been intellectually dishonest in many of his debates with me. But somehow I don’t think that’s what Times editors are looking for. If they find a third pseudonym — if he posted comments somewhere as “Mikeysushi” — well, under The Times’s odd standards, that could end his career. But “improving” the facts to suit a liberal agenda? Standard operating procedure!
Precisely. They made a showy example of minor misconduct so that they wouldn’t have to address the big problem, just like Olby did yesterday. Moron though he be, he can’t seriously believe that an obvious joke about attacking Bill O’Reilly is more likely to incite violence than his nightly hysteria about creeping fascism — occasionally replete with Nazi newsreel footage — for the benefit of a nutroots audience that’s even more excitable than he is. He’s lucky, in a sense, that his viewership is so tiny: the bigger it gets, the greater the chance that his logic in holding commentators accountable for what their craziest fans do is going to rebound on him in a big way.
Just something to reflect upon as we await the next outbreak of right-wing hate.

Update: Even (some) liberals think OlbyWatch has the better of the argument.

seejanemom on November 17, 2006 at 2:36 PM
Does anyone know the offical Nielsen numbers for Meltdown vs. the other cable news shows, specifically the Factor?
I caught a bit on Olbermann’s show a few nights ago where he was saying that between 8:45 and 9:00pm for the male age 27 to 54 demographic (or some such crap) that he was beating O’Reilly.
Or maybe it was in the one-eyed retard lesbo demographic, ages 56 to 57. Something like that.
Rosetta on November 17, 2006 at 2:39 PM
Why do we even give this moron the time of day.
MikeyB on November 17, 2006 at 2:40 PM
The part where you attempted to justify the Southern position of the civil war on your blog is where I stopped paying attention to your opinion. And you fanatics accuse liberals of being “anti-American” or “unpatriotic”?
As for Olbermann, good. I hope he continues to do his patriotic duty: annoy right-wing fanatics who hate the fact that there is an open liberal still left in the cable media.
Grebrook on November 17, 2006 at 2:42 PM
I agree with MikeyB, we should not waste time with this garbage
Ropera on November 17, 2006 at 2:42 PM
HOLY CRAP are you hysterical. He was joking that he’d have to do so to beat O’Reilly on Dancing with the Stars. Yeah, not an obvious joke at all.
Slow extreme-right news day?
Constantine on November 17, 2006 at 2:44 PM
Let me quote from the post:
Yes, he was clearly joking. Had Ann Coulter made the same joke, would she be tonight’s “worst person in the world”? Yes. Would Olby have included it as “evidence” of the right allegedly inciting its members to violence? Yes. Would you be criticizing Olby for blowing an obvious joke hugely out of proportion? No.
Allahpundit on November 17, 2006 at 2:47 PM
I guess if you make a bad joke, Al a Kerry, and then apologize for it immediately, it’s ok.
Does that mean that if I say; “I love to club Keith in the head with a Louisville Slugger reinforced clue-bat” and say; “I’m sorry, that was a joke”, that I’m forgiven?
I didn’t think so…
E L Frederick (Sniper One) on November 17, 2006 at 2:47 PM
Keith Olbermann is one sick human being. His outrageous attack on Michelle Malkin, Laura Ingraham and Ann Coulter the other night was equivalent to an attack on our family from my point of view. We also have stopped listening to the excellent ESPN radio ‘Dan Patrick Show’ until Olbermann is removed from the show.
olympian2008 on November 17, 2006 at 2:48 PM
Olby should be on the show “dancing with the loons”
he is in lockstep with their hate two step (or is it two face ?)
William Amos on November 17, 2006 at 2:50 PM
Olbermann isn’t on sportscenter anymore? That’s the only time he was entertaining.
lorien1973 on November 17, 2006 at 2:50 PM
You consider Malkin, Ingraham and Coulter to be “family”? LoL. Wow, that’s a little weird. You know, last time I checked, Olbermann didn’t mock an entire group of people who were thrown into internment camps.
Olbermann is god damn Saint Patrick next to Malkin.

While that may be true, he does consistently give aide and comfort to the enemy by illustrating just how divided America is. He also provides aide by lying his fool head off in order to turn American’s against their own government.
He’s a tool, nothing more. If half of his rhetorical rantings were true, he’d be dead by now. Bush and his minions of neo-cons would of killed him.
Whatever… he’s a self-important deluded fool.

Check mediabistro.com Latest numbers have KO at about 70% (my eyeball math) of OR in the money demo. Believe OR has a much more substantial advantage overall. The trend is towards KO, proving again that the least common denominator works in TV.

However the idea of Olby-Patrick running around screaming “They’re always after my Lucky Charms” makes me laugh.
E L Frederick (Sniper One) on November 17, 2006 at 2:58 PM
Um, no, or perhaps, also. But this is called an all out assault on the guy’s character. The boss has ordered the hit, I’ve no doubt.

Nice try, but no. If a Republican was as unhinged as him… like McCain, like would say the same things. And I have about McCain.
Olbermann is the kind of fool who believes an anonymous source over an official report. He’s like the 9/11 for truth nuts, he’ll take whatever minor little contrary fact he can find, no matter how irrelevant or silly, and make it a huge mountain of an issue.
He’s a liar, and he belongs in the side show at the circus.
E L Frederick (Sniper One) on November 17, 2006 at 3:03 PM
Oh yes, I would also like to mention that I have no sympathy whatsoever for Laura Ingraham. The cruel piece of garbage attended gay rights meetings when she was in college so she could take down the names of those that attended and out them pubicly to their parents and friends by printing them in the school newspaper.
Piece of trash.
Grebrook on November 17, 2006 at 3:04 PM
That’s right, I forgot, it’s only ok to out gays if they are Republicans. Oops, our bad.
More of that infamous tolerance from the left we hear so much about. Thanks Grebrook for showing us your moral high ground.
E L Frederick (Sniper One) on November 17, 2006 at 3:07 PM
Sigh. No, the boss hasn’t ordered anything. The “hit,” by which you mean “criticism,” is entirely mine. But it’s delightfully conspiratorial of you to say so.
Indeed. He’s just ahead of re-runs of Deal or No Deal.
In the key demo, that is. Overall, he’s actually trailing them.

…so, that’s how we turn your brain off, huh….
*THE SOUTH SHALL RIIIIIIIIIISE AGAIN!*
…there…gimme the magic formula for freezing up your fingers and shutting your pie-hole, and we could have a little peace….
You routinely dismiss not only the opinions but the *HUMANITY* of the folks with whom you disagree.
That only goes to prove an old point made by George Will…oh…prolly back before you were born. He said that you disagree with a conservative, he thinks it’s because you’re stupid. If you disagree with a liberal, he thinks it’s because you’re *EVIL*.
…so, the Ladies — *HAIL THE BOSS!*, by the way — are all a bunch of hysterical shrews who can’t take a joke…this coming from a guy who’s evidently more tender about his paper-think dignity than Mother Superior is about her girls virtue.
But, he’s doing his “duty”, his “patriotic duty”, to the Left…he’s annoying the Right. He isn’t informing anyone, and neither, in fact, do you. He’s just annoying. That puts you right up there with the body louse, the flea and the spirochete.
…there…I’ve dissed *YOUR* humanity…you can call me a “hypocrite” now and throw some statistics at my rapidly diminishing backside as I amble off to play with the adults.

Now that he has appointed himself the official scold of the left wing he has become what he used to decry. Pity.
honora on November 17, 2006 at 3:23 PM
It still I think comes back to the fact that for some reason Liberals even hold Conservatives to a high ethical standard. If Olbermann says something even as a joke about cutting someone…hahaha…it’s a joke. If say Allah here were to post that someone needs to pull a Screech home video on Olbermann, people (Constantine, Grebrook, et al) would fall over themselves to point out how heartless and hypocritical those on the right are, even if it was a joke, it’s not funny, because the right isn’t supposed to make such jokes….blah blah blah. Doesn’t South Park say something about enjoying the smell of your own fart?
Funny double standard.

In a leadership fight? This is how far your party has sunk? You can now only gloat over which Democrat is going to rule Congress, as opposed to a Republican handing Pelosi her butt? We crushed you in the election and you’ve been reduced to hedging bets on infighting. Hoyer is more liberal than Murtha anyway. Murtha is pro-life, anti-gay rights, pro-lobbyist. Hoyer is socially liberal and none of those things.
So I don’t quite see why you’re celebrating.
Yes you did. You claimed the South was fighting for “principles” of “states having the right to decide their own destinies”. Leaving out, of course, the whole, “slavery was the only “states’ right” the South was really concerned about”.
Also, I’m curious. You’re applauding that a town in Nevada banned foreign flags from flying. If they ban the Confederate flag and fine people who try to fly it, how would you feel about that?
Something makes me doubt the people at Hot Air will be giddy about it.

Second, it appears you haven’t gotten more than the pre-digested version of history that has been handed to you by the public education system.
There was alot more to the civil war than just the emancipation proclamation. Which didn’t start the war, but came in the middle of it.
Furthermore, no flag, be it Confederate, Mexican, or Moonbat, should be flown about Old’ Glory. That is the way it should be. In that sense, seejanemom is right on the money.

Sniper One, what you have to realize, is that George Bush is in fact the only man responsible for wrongs of the world, even before we was born.
Stock market crash. G.W.
Trail of Tears. G.W.
Blankets to the Native Americans. That one was Rove.
Push of BETA instead of VHS…also G.W. (Right Wing Conspiracy)
Along the same lines. LaserDisc. G.W.
Olbermann’s low rating compared to Fox. G.W.
You are all retarded if you can’t see that G.W. is responsible for everything…always…forever.

Yeah, I’m sure pal, please tell all of us uneducated Yankees about how the South wasn’t fighting because they were afraid the Union would eventually outlaw slavery. No, no, no. It was all about FREEDOM! It was about the Yankee man oppressing the poor Southerner.
Christ almighty, thank God liberals aren’t like conservatives. If we were, we’d still be bitching about the 2000 election in 2150.

You DON’T think it’s hypocritical for a closeted gay person to persecute people for being openly gay? Do you know what the word “hypocritical” means?
