Ted Turner to Rupert Murdoch: You stingy SOB

Can we make an absolute moral authority card for this dolt:
Cable-industry legend Ted Turner has traveled the globe urging friendship instead of fighting.
He even donated $1 billion over the past nine years to the United Nations to promote world peace.
But don’t ask him to share warm feelings about Rupert Murdoch, chairman of News Corp., or Time Warner Inc., which purchased Turner Broadcasting System Inc. in 1996.
“There is one person I don’t like,” he said of Murdoch.
Turner lambasted Murdoch – whose net worth is $7.7 billion, according to Forbes magazine.
“He gives nothing to charity,” said Turner, whose net worth is estimated at $1.9 billion.
I wonder how his $1 billion bribe donation to the United Nations is paying off.

He should have stuck to racing 12 meter boats in the America’s Cup…

Murdoch to Turner: Ted, are you off your meds, again?

Old Magyar proverb: the Pot should not call the Kettle black.
Turner would prod some of his best people at CNN out the door by not raising their salary–the less you agreed with him, the less salary you got

Someone who donates one or a billion dollars to the U.N. isn’t credible to offer opinions on others’ money-management practices. Besides, a donation to the U.N. is not charity – it’s stupidity. As for Murdoch, one shouldn’t be offended by the remarks of the mentally challenged.
thedecider on November 16, 2006 at 9:14 PM
It’s paying off by contributing to the rape of thousands of little girls as young as 8, but UN workers.
RightWinged on November 16, 2006 at 9:16 PM
Most or all of Turner’s donation to the UN is only the interest each year on an amount which he has put in some sort of trust. That little deal got him a huge tax deduction, and he MADE MONEY on the whole she-bang
( no, that was not a Jane Fonda reference; that would be Wrong, and lead to nightmares )

$1 billion over the past nine years to the United Nations
I would NOT call that a donation to a good or decent cause.
If you followed the money, it probably went to our direct enemies, i.e. Al Qaeda, Iran, Hamas, ???? I can’t say this as fact, but I DO believe it went somewhere that promotes the “hate America” agenda. Well I guess the UN qualifies, but I meant overseas somewhere.

This is an interesting topic Bryan. I have been thinking about how misunderstood the Gates/Buffet Foundations are. Clinton keeps citing them as if people must give to one or the other..his or theirs as if they are the ‘moral authority” on giving. What is not being misunderstood is that these individuals have the option to give to whatever the cause they choose..The individuals have the right not to publicly state where their funds go..Good for Branson for giving his money to Clinton’s foundation. Good for Turner for buying the UN, but guess what..it goes on everyday throughout the world. It isn’t anything new…Murdoch has been generous and will continue to be generous, but I guess the difference between Turner and Murdoch is not ratings 2-1, or money $1.9 billion vs $7.7 billion, or the fact that Murdoch can complete an interview with his eyes open and not saturate the sentence with ums..The difference is that one doesn’t need to flaunt or ridicule…

Excuse me, I miss read the author as Bryan..I should have said Ian..

Thanks for the correction, I was quite insulted.

On the scale of the working guy like me, people who need to announce their donations, I think have humongous egos and quite annoying. I think it is best to donate, and not announce to the world “Hey Everybody Look At Me”. I think people like Ted Turner are rude and crude. He deserves a punch in the nose, he isn’t doing anything out of the goodness of his heart, but enlargness of his ego. Yet it is nice if you have the big money that you get recognized in return as a thank you, not ask for the recognition.
StuLongIsland on November 16, 2006 at 9:42 PM
They used to say the same thing about Bill Gates, before he started donating billions. I suspect that Murdoch, much like Gates, was holding onto his money until it would actually have an impact.
I bet a lot of UN envoys and their families are enjoying Turner’s $billion though!

Anyone who would mistake Hanoi Jane Fonda as marriage material deserves our pity. Maybe he bumped his head on one of those America’s Cup races.
At least he’s not bashful. (I was trying to find something good to say, and that was it.)

An Absolutely No Clue Card???
Yes.
hillbillyjim on November 16, 2006 at 10:04 PM
Stu- the word is boorish..people that are monied, and are well mannered, generally don’t talk about such things. Great observation!
Kevin M- I know that Bill and Melinda have been giving for years..it was only recently that their foundation really made headlines..The sad thing about it is that now that it is out there..you have people passing judgement on the giving..

The truth is, we’ll never know about the biggest “givers”, because they will not trumpet their philanthropism, nor demand attention for it.
hillbillyjim on November 16, 2006 at 10:23 PM
sorry ’bout that, lib’s, I forgot. The TRUTH is,…
hillbillyjim on November 16, 2006 at 10:26 PM
How could I forget to shout TRUTH? Or maybe TRUTH TO POWER? How could I be so negligent? BAH!
hillbillyjim on November 16, 2006 at 10:28 PM
I think Jane had some very interesting stinky things to say about their marriage. Ewwwwwww.

Hey! Ian! How are you able to make those emoticons show up?
I’ve never seen one of those on this comment board before, and I couldn’t cut and paste yours.

…he could call up Kofi and his boy…they’re livin’ large on some of it, prolly….
Puritan1648 on November 16, 2006 at 11:35 PM
…people invite Ted Turner to speak for the same reason that they go to auto races: they want to see a crash.
This man is as fun as a barrel of monkeys…unfortunately for all around him, he’s barely as smart as a barrel of monkeys…if compared individually….
Puritan1648 on November 16, 2006 at 11:38 PM
Or even as a whole.
thedecider on November 16, 2006 at 11:47 PM
…no, taken collectively, the monkeys’d win.
Pity Turner hasn’t got anything prehensile on ‘im…that’d count for something….
Puritan1648 on November 17, 2006 at 12:04 AM
Ted always looks like a character from a Cheech and Chong movie.
He looks like he’s just had one too many tokes on the Ol’El KeBong.
Burp! Crap, I just split my beer and got bong juice on my shorts.
I’ve got pinholes up and down my favorite satin shirt!
Kini on November 17, 2006 at 12:11 AM
Why couldn’t Ted follow his Dad’s example and end our collective suffering?
Emmett J. on November 17, 2006 at 12:35 AM
A well-to-do older lady said to me once “rich people usually don’t talk about their money”. She paused, and then said “that’s why I never say much”.
Ted craves attention and unfortunately he gets it mostly in a spoiled child way.

Sorry, the one and only Mouth of the South will always be Jimmy Hart.
ReubenJCogburn on November 17, 2006 at 2:58 AM
It seems like Turner is a go-getter hardworking kinda guy—just not too smart. He was the proverbial blind squirrel with the cable news thing, IMO
jdpaz on November 17, 2006 at 9:28 AM
What the hell business is this of weird old Turner or anyone else what somebody does with their own money?
Wade on November 17, 2006 at 9:56 AM
Quote from a press release from the NYC Department of Education
Of course, expecting Turner to actually speak the truth is probably too much to ask.
