John Edwards buys Playstation 3 from Wal-Mart … after bashing it

Former Senator and failed candidate for Vice-President John Edwards obtained the new video game system Playstation 3 from his local Wal-Mart today (UPDATE: Note: the system is not released until midnight tonight):

(UPDATE II: He has not yet purchased the system, however the obvious point still stands)

Just like the millions of Americans who turn to their neighborhood Wal-Mart for their holiday shopping needs, Wal-Mart announced today that former Sen. John Edwards is seeking to be one of the first to get a Sony PlayStation 3, one of the most coveted holiday gift items this Christmas season.

Last summer Edwards spoke at a Wake Up Wal-Mart bashing the retail giant:

“We want every single consumer in America, every person in America, to know that if they walk into a Wal-Mart, that first of all their tax dollars are subsidizing Wal-Mart employees. Their tax dollars are helping provide health care for Wal-Mart employees, because Wal-Mart’s not doing it. Their tax dollars are going to provide housing and food stamps for Wal-Mart employees,” Mr. Edwards told a crowd of 400 at Hill House. “What is wrong with this picture?”

Edwards’ knocking of Wal-Mart isn’t just a one-time thing, but a hobby for him. In fact, just yesterday he was at another Wake Up Wal-Mart event, again bashing the company.

Townhall’s Mary Katharine Ham has a picture of Edwards at an August Wake Up Wal-Mart event.

What’s the story here Ian? He’s a Democrat and no one, be it MSM or blogs, should ever speak of this hypocrisy again.

RightWinged on November 16, 2006 at 6:45 PM

Kinda like speaker Pelooser , “do as I say , not as I do” monologue-ist mantra, and don’t even think of questioning me about my doings.

shooter on November 16, 2006 at 6:45 PM

can i get me a hy-po-critizin’ license here?

RushBaby on November 16, 2006 at 6:48 PM

It is totally “do as I say”.

This is crap, and we all know it.

Mortis on November 16, 2006 at 6:48 PM

Who says rich people don’t buy from wal-mart?

Defector01 on November 16, 2006 at 6:49 PM

Liberal hypocrisy is truly without limit.

ReubenJCogburn on November 16, 2006 at 6:54 PM

Prediction: This year Dems make big deal about putting Christ back in Christmas, Happy Holidays is so passe, that went out of style before Bush became a lame duck, etc, and take all the credit. JUST YOU WATCH.

RushBaby on November 16, 2006 at 6:54 PM

He drives a HUGE SUV around here in Raleigh (so I’ve heard). Hypco.crite.

SouthernGent on November 16, 2006 at 6:55 PM

I do not like WalMart either. But I do not spend my money in that store. Go figure.

That has already been on several newscasts. The retailers learned who runs this country. It would be fun to see what WalMart in Dearborn, MI will look like during the CHRISTMAS season. I wonder…

Theworldisnotenough on November 16, 2006 at 6:59 PM

I wonder who will stand in line for him…

John Edwards = Bill Clinton

“Which way is the wind blowing today? Yeah, I was going that way myself (smiles). Sickening.

Isn’t Hillary on, or was on, Wal-Mart’s board of directors?

EF on November 16, 2006 at 7:08 PM

I think Wal Mart is great. Got a toaster oven there a couple of months ago.

Scot on November 16, 2006 at 7:11 PM

EF on November 16, 2006 at 7:08 PM

Yes, she was.

Their tax dollars are helping provide health care for Wal-Mart employees, because Wal-Mart’s not doing it. Their tax dollars are going to provide housing and food stamps for Wal-Mart employees,

It’s WalMart’s fault that people like Edwards vote to take your tax money in entitlements for the “poor”.

The chutzpah is remarkable. Follow the yellow brick road here…

- WalMart doesn’t employ union workers, therefore WalMart bad.
- WalMart doesn’t pay it’s employees as much as “we” think they should, therefore WalMart bad.
- WalMart can’t build here, because WalMart bad.
- Why are so many people here unemployed? WalMart ruined the competition, because WalMart bad.
- “We” need to raise taxes, to provide everything for the WalMart workers who are suffering, because WalMart bad.

I have no problems with WalMart. They buy Chinese products, and I wish they wouldn’t. So, I don’t buy them, and neither should you. If people really boycotted Chinese products, WalMart wouldn’t sell them.

But for Edwards, who thinks government should subsidize EVERYONE’s healthcare, to whine about the government subsidizing ANYONE’s healthcare, is just about the limit. What a tool.

Freelancer on November 16, 2006 at 7:15 PM

I hope AP keeps this photo of the Breck Girl handy. No makeup and harsh Wal-Mart lighting. His expression looks like he smelled something bad, or maybe had to shake hands with some Wal-Mart employees.

RushBaby on November 16, 2006 at 7:17 PM

How the heck did he “obtain” a PS3 today? They’re not released until midnight tonight.

PattyAnn on November 16, 2006 at 7:23 PM

Another splendid little Wal-Mart service called rainchecks.

RushBaby on November 16, 2006 at 7:26 PM

The Company noted the PlayStation3 is an extremely popular item this Christmas season, and while the rest of America’s working families are waiting patiently in line, Senator Edwards wants to cut to the front.

What a piece of work.

B Moe on November 16, 2006 at 7:27 PM

Probably reserved it a while ago. Walmart is one of the few retailers that do that. And special connections.

There is going to be around 100k PS3 at the launch, and already up here in Canada some stores are posting on the front door that they won’t be getting it due to low stock.

It’s going to be both stupid and insane.

MarkyX on November 16, 2006 at 7:28 PM

Today, midnight tonight — same thing, he is still getting one.

He might have it now — I know when I order books from Amazon, most of the time I will receive them a day before the scheduled release.

Ian on November 16, 2006 at 7:30 PM

Okay, I got this from MKH’s site:

“The Company noted the PlayStation3 is an extremely popular item this Christmas season, and while the rest of America’s working families are waiting patiently in line, Senator Edwards wants to cut to the front. While, we cannot guarantee that Sen. Edwards will be among one of the first to obtain a PlayStation3, we are certain Sen. Edwards will be able to find great gifts for everyone on his Christmas list – many at Wal-Mart’s ‘roll-back prices.’”

PattyAnn on November 16, 2006 at 7:37 PM

You know, if John Kerry had been elected president, Christopher Reeve would be playing a PS3 today!

Mallard T. Drake on November 16, 2006 at 7:39 PM

What he had to buy a game console from a foreign manufacturer instead of buying one from an American company?(recognizing that all this stuff is made in china, singapore, & taiwan).

Iblis on November 16, 2006 at 7:56 PM

PattyAnn, I read the same thing elsewhere… I’m not sure that he got special treatment and got a PS3 ahead of anyone else, but the point of the post remains, he’s a hypocrite. Special treatment would just be a little cherry on top.

I think Wal Mart is great. Got a toaster oven there a couple of months ago.

Scot on November 16, 2006 at 7:11 PM

Agreed. A couple days ago I got a pair of slippers, a pair of sweatpants, and an electric toothbrush.

RightWinged on November 16, 2006 at 8:06 PM

I initially thought you meant that Edwards bashed the PS3. I was gonna search around to see why.

zerodamage on November 16, 2006 at 8:13 PM

Edwards shops at Wal-Mart after bashing them; Gore flys all over the world – screaming about global warming; Hollywood was just recognized as the second biggest polluter in the state of California (behind the petroleum industry, itself). Nothing new here folks. Same old hypocrisy from the same old hypocrites.

thedecider on November 16, 2006 at 8:37 PM

Edwards denies being in Walmart. Says he has not been there in years. Where is the photo from?

lorien1973 on November 16, 2006 at 8:56 PM

There are only 4,000 PS3’s available in the U.S. upon release today. The estimate is 5-6 to sell per retailer selling the PS3. People have camped out in line for a week to get one. I wanted to get one for my 13-yr old son since he has done so damn well in school and in his life in general. Alas, he’ll not be getting one for Christmas this year due to the forementioned circumstances. But I’m sure he’ll be happy to have one next Christmas and he’ll gladly wait for it.

Now that punk ass bitch Edwards is going to gaff one right off the floor of the retail giant he has been on the bandwagon against all these years? I bet he didn’t camp out for a week to get one.

If I was Wal-Mart, I’d sell him the PS3 box… with a brick and a chuck of plywood taped to the inside.

SilverStar830 on November 16, 2006 at 9:30 PM

Just like a liberal, bash the company then cut in line to get a ps3. He probably threatened to sue them or something. I never thought I’d say this…Edwards is an even bigger douche than Keith Olbermann. And don’t even get me started on these stupid console systems. You can build a pc that will own any console out there..or pwn any console out there for those of you that insist on that stupid slang. I recently won an xbox 360 as a daily contest prize from a website I order games from..I sold it at EB and used the credit to buy a bunch of pc titles…ah, sweet irony.

Valiant on November 16, 2006 at 8:55 PM

I believe the photo is of Edwards at a Walmart bashing event, Valiant. Plus, I think I read somewhere that he wasn’t going to Walmart to get this himself, he had a staffer call on his behalf.

RightWinged on November 16, 2006 at 9:56 PM

Maybe he was channeling the spirit of a child who was just DYING to get a PS3.

Edwards claims his young son disapproved of a classmate buying his sneakers at Walmart. Edwards seems to proud of that. How sad for the kid who wears Walmart sneakers. That is why people can’t stand libs. They are so freakin holier than thou. Maybe the kid with the Walmart sneakers can only afford to buy them there. Maybe he wanted the sneakers from Walmart. Maybe his Mom or Dad works there and bought them for him. Not everbody is rich enough to buy a million dollar property in the top school district in the state and Nike sneakers. This from the poverty center kingpin.

bloggless on November 16, 2006 at 10:38 PM

I heard he lives in a place called Meadowmont in Chapel Hill while he waits for his new home to be built on his huge, high priced property in Chapel Hill. A very upscale village type community in Chapel Hill. There is a Walmart just a few miles away, so I find it interesting that this person went to Raleigh. Can you imaging the gas wasted?

bloggless on November 16, 2006 at 10:48 PM

I’m a regular Wal*Mart shopper…and I’m feeling somehow cinematic tonight:

Captain Renault: (loudly) Everybody is to leave here immediately! This cafe is closed until further notice! Clear the room at once!

Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds?

Renault: I am shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!

Croupier: Your winnings, sir.

Renault: Oh. Thank you very much.

…even if it isn’t true…as John Ford observed…when the legend becomes fact, print the legend.

The spirit of your comment is spot-on. However, I don’t feel “sad” for the kid who buys sneakers at Wal-Mart instead of a higher-priced retail outlet. I feel a great swell of American pride that we have such retailers offering products at low prices to every day people called Americans. We are, indeed, a very fortunate and blessed country – John Edwards be dammned!

Where else can you buy eggs, a radio, and a shotgun in the same store?

Walmart is the best store on the planet.

AZ_Redneck on November 17, 2006 at 1:24 AM

No where in the story did it say that Edwards returned the PS3 to WalMart.

What a POS.

I don’t blame WalMart for giving him the PS3. Obviously they knew a golden PR moment when they saw it. They made Edwards look like an elitist. Now they should ask for the PS3 back and make a show of it. Interview the person who did not get their PS3 because of Edwards. In fact, go out in front of the store and announce that someone is not getting a PS3 so that an ambulance chasing millaire could give one to his spoiled brat.

You know, I should be doing PR for WalMart.

Bill C on November 17, 2006 at 1:42 AM

I don’t have kids yet, but when I do, you can damn well bet that I won’t teach them to look down on other kids who might not have as much as they do. And if Mr. “Did I mention that I’m the son of a millworker in the last 30 seconds?” really remembered where he came from, he wouldn’t brag on his son for sounding like an elitist prick.

ReubenJCogburn on November 17, 2006 at 2:52 AM

I hope he stands in line at a Walmart here that has 1,000 illegals all jabbering in Mexican and Spanglish…. with their anchor babies crawling on the floors while they try to cut you off in line and walk around like they own the place.

Breck Girl claimed his staffer misinterpreted his wife’s request to get a PS3 for their kid AS A LICENSE TO SHOP AT WALMART.

Bad staffer! Bad Staffer!

LOL.

Democrats == lying, hypocritical, assclowns. Every one of them.

georgej on November 17, 2006 at 5:53 AM

Pity, I might like John Edwards more if he were getting a Nintendo Wii. ^_^

American_Pride1701 on November 17, 2006 at 7:45 AM

Let me clarify here, I don’t feel bad for the kid with the Walmart sneakers because he is wearing Walmart sneakers, but rather because he is a little kid who has a classmate criticizing him for wearing them. It sounds to me like that teacher needs to do a little tolerance and manners teaching in the classroom because it doesn’t seem to be taught at home. It seems that so many kids with lib parents do not respect the feelings of other kids. I think the school should have a little seminar on manners and respecting other students.

Every day a liberal hero is exposed as a hypocrite is a GOOD day!

Not for you, perhaps. But for us.

georgej on November 17, 2006 at 10:12 AM

Apparently some libs don’t think what goes on inside the classroom is important. Imagine that.

Since he lives in an adjacent county to me in NC, if he were to visit a Walmart, that is exactly what he would see!

Valiant on November 17, 2006 at 11:42 AM

The Breck Girl denied it before he admitted it.

It must be noted that he LIED about all this….which is hardly news.
