Hoyer humiliates Pelosi, defeats Murtha, 149-86

Just in at Fox. Soak it in. Updates coming.

Update: Unless there was some eleventh-hour shift to Hoyer — which is unlikely, considering that 90 Democrats had already publicly committed to him yesterday — then Murtha lied to Matthews’s face on Hardball yesterday.

Update: Welcome the new majority leader!

Murtha was an unindicted co-conspirator in the Abscam scandal of the 1970s, which has prompted some to support the other man seeking the House majority leader’s job — Rep. Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland — as the more ethical candidate.

Hoyer, also on appropriations, sent $61.7 million to his district just outside of Washington during this Congress, the watchdog group says. That put him among the top 10% of earmarkers in the House. The earmarks frequently benefited local defense contractors.

In the 2006 defense appropriations bill, for example, Hoyer secured $2.8 million for ManTech International Corp., which has a facility in his district that is developing a military project. ManTech’s executives and its political action committee have donated $49,000 to Hoyer’s campaign and leadership funds since 2001.

Update: How high were the stakes? The New York Observer’s Politicker blog posted this before the vote:

The damage could be significant if she loses. Forget the public relations angle – this is a woman who has had a remarkably strong hold on the Democratic Caucus, despite the best efforts of her foes (internal and external) to undermine her. But this looks very petty and very personal– a grudge being carried out against a man, Hoyer, who Pelosi simply doesn’t trust and doesn’t like. And that could weaken her support structure within the Democratic caucus, whose ranks she has now divided just days after their stunning win at the polls…

[I]f she does pull out a win for Murtha this morning, she will take the Speaker’s gavel with unparalleled and unquestioned power, the strongest Speaker the House has seen in years. And she’ll have delivered one final, lasting blow to Hoyer – the man she first met 40-something years ago, when they both interned for Maryland Senator Daniel Brewster.

Update: Try as he might, Jules Crittenden can’t get too excited:

As political theater, it promises to be a great show. And I want to be enthusiastic about it.

There’s just one thing.

It isn’t theater. Lives hang in the balance. Possibly thousands of American lives and tens of thousands of Iraqi lives. None of what I’ve described above, if you care about the future of America and American values in the world, is much good. All of it carries the threat of grave consequences.

Update: I wonder how much of this was influenced by Abizaid (and Zinni and Batiste) all saying in the past 48 hours that a quick withdrawal from Iraq would be catastrophic. It’d be hard for the Dems to support that position with Murtha as majority leader.

Update: The “culture of corruption” fun hasn’t end just yet. Judicial Watch is calling on Pelosi to eliminate Alcee Hastings from consideration for the chairmanship of the Intel Committee. And the Blotter is reporting that Robert Menendez remains a “person of interest” in a federal investigation into a shady real-estate deal in New Jersey. That plus the rumors about Reid and Abramoff probably also lost Murtha a few votes.

Update: Pelosi is speaking now; video soon. She just congratulated Murtha for having spoken “truth to power” in opposing the war.

Update: Video of the Pelosi/Hoyer/Murtha joint presser is here.

Update: No comment.

Better than Murtha any day of the week!!

Damn it. 2 years of Murtha and corruption stories would have been nice too :(. Now its just a week (or less) of embarrassment for Pelosi :(

lorien1973 on November 16, 2006 at 12:04 PM

Not even close. Definitely a slap in the botox for Pelosi, which is what really counts.

RedWinged Blackbird on November 16, 2006 at 12:05 PM

Whoa! This is great!

Way to go Sane Centrist Democrats!

techno_barbarian on November 16, 2006 at 12:06 PM

William Amos on November 16, 2006 at 12:06 PM

Excellent! Let’s hope that this is just the first of many setbacks for the Botox queen.

rplat on November 16, 2006 at 12:07 PM

This is not good news for Republicans. It only makes Democrats look less stupid. However, an out-of-the-starting-gate toe stub for that hag Pelosi provides some comfort.

RC2 on November 16, 2006 at 12:08 PM

I fail to see why you all are so happy about this?

Check out Hoyer’s voting record

http://www.ontheissues.org/House/Steny_Hoyer.htm

Where’s the upside? Am I missing something, besides egg in the face?

lorien1973 on November 16, 2006 at 12:09 PM

what? Murtha lied? C’mon, I can’t believe it… why, Jack Murtha is the most ethical member in the most ethical congress ever

dalewalt on November 16, 2006 at 12:09 PM

This makes me happy just like how cute little bunnies make me happy.

frankj on November 16, 2006 at 12:10 PM

RC2,

It’s not good news to the Republicans, but good news for us and our troops. The morons in the Democratic party who want to cut and run were planning on leaving a contingent of SOF forces in Iraq to take care of any messes. We all know how well that works: http://www.ranger.org/somaliaHistoryNightstalkers.html

PRCalDude on November 16, 2006 at 12:12 PM

Its good news for several reasons.

It keeps Murtha from having too much power

It brought out all the crap Murtha had been hiding for years

and it will tick off the anti war moonbats who will see it as the democratic party abandoning them.

William Amos on November 16, 2006 at 12:14 PM

We get Lott and they get Hoyer. Who has the party discipline? Unhappy day. The more radical they are, the better contrast we can be.

Next we’ll get Blunt and Boehner instead of Shadegg and Pence. Who was it that said trying to control a caucus was like trying to herd cats?

RushBaby on November 16, 2006 at 12:15 PM

And she’ll have delivered one final, lasting blow to Hoyer – the man she first met 40-something years ago, when they both interned for Maryland Senator Daniel Brewster.

Do I smell jilted lover, Pelosi? Did Hoyer love ya and leave ya? Quite a grudge. ;)

lorien1973 on November 16, 2006 at 12:17 PM

The more radical they are, the better contrast we can be.

That’s my thoughts too. Put them out there for what they are. While a power struggle is cute; nothing plays to the masses like a guy who has bribery issues leading the party in congress :)

lorien1973 on November 16, 2006 at 12:19 PM

YES!!!
Murtha, I served with Marines. I knew Marines. Marines are friends of mine. Murtha , you’re no Marine

Schadenfreude toward Pelosi and a loss for personal grudges.

Hopefully a win for the war on terror and our soldiers.

RushBaby on November 16, 2006 at 12:15 PM

So far, it’s the huge-government/open-border “Republicans”, the same ones that cost the party as a whole the majority. Getting Blunt and Boehner will only reinforce that.

steveegg on November 16, 2006 at 12:23 PM

And Bush is supposed to be impotent now? Nancy can’t even pick the gavel up without her own caucus turning its backs on her!

Simply. Hilarious.

E L Frederick (Sniper One) on November 16, 2006 at 12:23 PM

Payback time for Hoyer!

According to an article by Perry Bacon, Jr. for Time Magazine, Pelosi “Carries a chip on her shoulder, beleiving that fellow Democrats and media elites have constantly underestimated her political ability..”.

In 2001, Bacon says, “Pelosi won an intense battle with Maryland’s Steny Hoyer to be the number 2 Democrat in the House”.

Apparently there is some old animosity between Pelosi and Hoyer that partly explains her actions now.

Bacon also quotes Pelosi as saying “Anybody who’s ever dealt with me knows not to mess with me”.

See the article here.

I can’t imagine how anyone can think that having Murtha in there is any better. What – for Repubs’ chances in ‘08? We don’t have 2-years to afford. We have an effing war to fight. Those who think having Murtha in there is better because it gives Repubs’ a fighting chance in ‘08 aught to think long and hard. They got themselves a loss. Now we have to live and work with it best we can – for the good of the troops.

Why are we so excited about this? Guys, we’re the antelope with one leg chewed off laying on the river bank while the crocs are fighting amongst themselves. Once they’re done chomping each other they’re going to come and finish us off. There’s no Steve Irwin to come to our rescue with a lawnmower. Instead you’ve got Jorge Arbusto poking us with a stick and laughing, forgetting that he’s next as soon as he’s signed the amnesty bill. It’s all good political theater, and I guess we need something to occupy ourselves, but don’t delude yourselves into thinking this actually means anything positive for us. We’re meat.

Single issue, short term, with the reason bolded in your answer. Murtha would love a plan like this. Hoyer won’t.

First things first.

Pablo on November 16, 2006 at 12:33 PM

Democrats will still push for troop withdrawal. This certainly doesn’t change that. They’ll still push for rescinding the tax cuts, amnesty etc etc etc. I just don’t get the giddiness.

lorien1973 on November 16, 2006 at 12:34 PM

Well – the plot thickens – in addition to being an arrogant, foul mouthed babling baboon – it appears that while Murtha has no problem counting payoffs – his education has not provided him the ability to count votes. Chris Matthews is in tears – at home in his room smoking dope shaking his head crying – “Murtha told me he had the votes 149-86???? – I thought only Republicans lied.”

iam7545 on November 16, 2006 at 12:34 PM

Too bad. I was looking forward to playing, “guess what Murtha said/did today!” for the next 2-years.

He sold his soul and got the booby prize.

TheBigOldDog on November 16, 2006 at 12:34 PM

Pelosi “Anybody who’s ever dealt with me knows not to mess with me”.

Anyone who says this is neither a good politician, nor a leader of today. Complete puerile idiocy.

I wouldn’t guess that much, since from what I’ve read, Hoyer’s views on the war aren’t much different from Murtha’s.

The main point of emphasis of all of this is that Pelosi has been undermined big time in her first leadership test and she is going to go in as a weakened speaker. This could be helpful for building a working majority (not will, just could for now) as many in the democrat caucus will feel emboldened to defy her – including the newly elected blue dog democrats.

And I bet our troops in the field would delight in this news as well.

The only thing I want to see Mothra win is a free dinner at Denny’s for his 90th birthday. And he can take Durbin with him. It is time for all of these senior citizen, Social Security teat babies, to head for the retirement home of their choice, and that is in all parties.

Lets hope this leads to many more good fights between these two rivals !

Hoyer’s win makes me reevaluate Pelosi’s win. Did the Dems elect Pelosi to plant the flag of First Woman Speaker Of The House verses her competence? Hoyer’s win shows little faith in her decision making ability.

It’s going to be a rough two years on the hag.

Dems new platform: The Total Crap Platform

bloggless on November 16, 2006 at 1:37 PM

“Extremism in the defense of cut-and-run is no… wait, I botched it.”

It is preferable news, if not good news. Hoyer’s a lefty, no doubt about it, and his voting record is a favorite of the ACLU and Planned Parenthood. But those votes would be there independent of leadership positions, and for now it is infinitely more important to consider the majority leader’s impact on our war footing (or lack of same). Hoyer is not (quite) the idiot that Murtha is where our troops are concerned.

Yes, Hoyer is an earmarking fiend, but until there are REAL reforms in the House, that’s merely shady, not criminal. I have yet to hear the term “unindicted co-conspirator” used in reference to Hoyer.

I refuse to be disappointed that the Democrats made a choice I feel is correct, that’s just twisted. All the “and I was going to enjoy two years of bashing Murtha” comments are a bit rather maudlin.

infidel4life on November 16, 2006 at 1:55 PM

Lame-duck Pelosi! First she couldn’t get the 9-11 commission recommendations put in place in her first 100 hours (ok, I guess she has til January) and now this?

Murtha must be pissed, especially after he helped her get the Presidio in SF for Gorbie and all… she owed him big-time and didn’t deliver.

Roll Call has stated that in early 2004, John Murtha “reportedly leaned on U.S. Navy officials to sign a contract to transfer the Hunters Point Shipyard to the City of San Francisco” and that “Laurence Pelosi, nephew of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, at the time was an executive of the company which owned the rights of the land.”

But that’s only the most recent chapter of Nancy Pelosi, John Murtha and San Francisco’s largest tract of undeveloped land.

In a speech entitled “From Swords to Plowshares, delivered in the House of Representatives on June 4, 1992, Pelosi cheered the arrival of Gorbachev to the Presidio as a tenant.

“The National Park Service is actively seeking ideas for programs and tenants at this spectacular site. Last month, former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev visited the presidio to propose that the Gorbachev Foundation/use be located at the Presidio when the army leaves. In his words, “it is wonderful and symbolic that a military base is being converted for use by the people’.

“As the cold war ends,” Pelosi continued, “it is, indeed, fitting that this army garrison—one of the oldest in the United States—will be transformed to a monument to peace, environmental preservation and recreation as a global park.”

Less than a year after Pelosi’s fawning words, Gorbachev and his American pre-funded $3.5-million Gorbachev Foundation moved into new a white, shingled bayfront house at the historic Presidio overlooking the Golden Bridge.

Next, avowed Communist Gorbachev brought his State of the Art Forum to the Presidio.

lorien1973 on November 16, 2006 at 12:09 PM

The upside is that they are collapsing before they even take office as the majority. Unfortunately, this is what it’s going to have to take for the American people to see that the Dems are just a bunch of clowns dressed as politicians. My biggest fear is that we are going to be completely distracted with all this crap for the next two years, and get hit again by Al-Qaeda. Iran and N. Korea are going to go forward with their nuke programs (full steam ahead). This is what happened in 1976 – everything came crashing when the Dems took over – the good thing about all of that then was that we got Reagan. Let’s see what we get in ‘08.

Rick on November 16, 2006 at 2:19 PM

This is excellent to see. The Democrats do not have a unified base. They are too spread out between the relatively sane and the idiotically leftist to keep it together long term. While I’m no fan of Hoyer, this is a strong slap in the face for Pelosi and undermines her power as Speaker. Let the hits keep on coming.

What we have to remember is that Pelosi has promised the most ethical congress in history.

Most ethical.

That implies a point of comparison with previous congresses.

Now, assuming congress has always been as corrupt as hell, it’s entirely likely that she can deliver on her promise without actually having to make congress ethical.

As long as it’s more ethical.

Course, trying to get Murtha into the number 2 slot wasn’t a great start, but, maybe she’s one of those ‘late bloomin’ girls.

Yep, that’s the scary thing LakeRuins. Nancy is certain to toss the appointment to Murtha as a show of her support. (and as a slap at Hoyer too, IMHO)

Whether intentional or not, it truly is a show of disrespect to our troops if Murtha heads up the ASAC. I simply can’t see why the Dems can’t recognize that.

If you had to choose, frankly, between Hoyer and Murtha as either politicians or human beings, I’m sure that you’d be excused for putting both into a sausage grinder and making a meat snowman out of the results…and trusting the hamburger more.

Still, the discomfort of our “betters” is delightful.

Maybe, the Democrats can unravel sufficiently by the time they’re sworn in as the next Congress to offset the idiocity, cupidity and sheer amateurishness of the Republicans. And, maybe the press will stop chortling by then. Hope springs eternal.
