I missed Dan Rather during the election. My friends and I used to enjoy watching him slowly flip out into madness before the night was over. I remember during 04 he would say stuff like: “We can’t give you a complete and accurate count for Oklahoma until we get all the votes. They may be counting until late but as they say in the south, we’ll wait until the cows come home. As they say in the north, it aint over till the fat lady sings. Well in the south, we’ve made arrangements with farmer John to keep the gates open and in the north, the fat lady hasn’t gone on a diet but may eventually buy Slim-Fast! She would do better with Trim-Spa. But right now, the count is too close to call. It’s so close you can’t even get a single slice of toilet-paper in between them and we all know that you’re not supposed to squeeze the Charmin!”

Oh, this reminds me of SUCH a proud moment here just before the election… Our local talk radio station (WPTF 680 – shameless plug) has a pair of hosts in the morning, a married couple, Rick and Donna Martinez. And just before the election, Donna scored an interview with Rather Biased. The man actually thought that it would be a pleasant interview with a nobody reporterette in Raleigh. Well, Donna Martinez cleaned his clock. It was AWESOME. He actually said he had no idea that she was gonna “Hammer” him about the “fake but accurate docs”. He was SOOOOO mad.

I’d like to publicly thank Donna “The Hammer” Martinez for giving us in Raleigh (and surrounding areas) North Carolina, a last really awesome moment before the election!!

It says a lot for the state of journalism that Dan Rather even thinks that “It’ll have guts and spine” is something that is appropriate for describing news.

I get his point, but that should be the defining characteristic of news coverage.
