I think the most sickening thing is the point of view that this is all about republicans vs democrats. Its not. America is the great lady that will suffer.

As far as I am concerned give all the senators and representatives sticks and lock the doors. let them beat themselves sillier. That won’t hurt America. But when you let them vote, then we are screwed. Is it bad to want to start fresh? If something were to happen (Attention Big Brother, I am not advocating or planning anything big to happen, just saying if) and 90% of our elected officials were to drop out of the picture that would probaly be a good thing. Get new blood into the system. We need people who are not mired down with the BS of DC politics in power. People who read the constitution and actually understand and approve of it.

So far as I know, it’s not codified *anywhere* (other than in the black hearts of party hacks) that you have to be senior to get the Speakership. *ANY* member of the House is eligible…it’s just not likely that you’ll have any support, or even get nominated, unless you’re the party’s man…or, as in this case, plucked chicken….

After seeing the Dems in the Senate line up Durbin and Schumer in “leadership” positions, don’t expect the party of raw political muscle, the party who tried to throw Joe Liebermann under the bus, to stumble in the House.

They’ll elect Pelosi and, maybe, Murtha…there’ll be committee memberships and chairmanships in the hazard, after all, and a lot of hardball played…and the blue-dogs will simmer and boil for a while. Whether they boil over is anybody’s bet.

Hmmm…Jane Harman has had a member of her staff suspended for leaking classified information. Alcee Hastings has been impeached (as a judge) for taking bribes. Which of these is the lesser of two evils?

Presumably the GOP would offer its votes as part of a deal whereby Hoyer would name Jane Harman to head intel instead of Alcee Hastings. Hoyer’s powerful enough that he could probably afford to make some enemies, but what about the 15 Democrats who’d be voting with the GOP? Can they afford to, particularly if it would mean torpedoing America’s first woman Speaker? Ain’t gonna happen.

Getting those 15 dems would be an uphill battle for sure. I won’t get my hopes up, but I’d love to watch the political earthquake if it did happen. Hell, I’d pay to watch that.

The catch is, they’d be voting for supposed moderate Steny Hoyer (he of “slavish devotion” fame) rather than Nancy Pelosi. And for any of this to work, they’d need near-perfect party unity on the vote, Hoyer’s cooperation or at least……
