Murtha to pro-Hoyer Dems: Stop swift-boating me! Update: Could the GOP make Hoyer Speaker?

In its schadenfreudean hilarity it is, quite simply, sublime:
“I am disconcerted that some are making headlines by resorting to unfounded allegations that occurred 26 years ago. I thought we were above this type of swift-boating attack. This is not how we restore integrity and civility to the United States Congress,” Murtha said of the ample press coverage of his link to Abscam and more recent negotiations he made as ranking Democrat on the Defense Appropriations Committee.
They even used that idiotic photo of him that I always use to illustrate their article.
So who’s the favorite, Steny Hoyer or Spanky? Hotline says the blue dogs are sticking with Hoyer because the Okinawa plan doesn’t play well with conservative-ish voters. Fox says Hoyer has some progressive votes too due in part to his more “progressive” views on abortion. Still other Dems are expected to opt for Hoyer because it’s hard to set a clean hands agenda with a figurehead as grimy as Murtha is:
Mr. Murtha is also coming under the spotlight on another subject that dominated the campaign: Congressional ethics. He helped block changes in ethics policies that Democrats proposed last year. He has also been an astute backroom-deal maker known for trading votes for the pet projects known as earmarks. He has had family members who lobbied on issues under his control, and he was caught up in the Abscam corruption scandal more than 25 years ago, though he was never charged.
Even Rangel’s sticking with Steny.
The wild card is Pelosi. Is she actively campaigning on Murtha’s behalf or not? Nope, says the Prowler:
Potential incoming Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has thus far declined to make phone calls on behalf of Rep. John Murtha’s run for Democrat leader, a decision that has some Murtha supporters angry. “She’s already publicly supported him, but when it comes to actually twisting some arms for some votes, she’s sitting on her hands,” says a House Ways and Means Committee staffer, whose boss is supporting Murtha for his anti-Iraqi war position…
Hoyer’s people informed the advisers that Hoyer had commitments from 20 or 21 of the 41 incoming Democrat members, as well as the majority of the caucus, seemingly locking up the leader job. “They [Hoyer's people] seemed to think it was strong enough majority for it not to shift too much because of the letter either way,” says a Democrat leadership aide. “Hoyer’s people were taking this in stride, that this was something Pelosi had to do to help herself with the MoveOn and Cindy Sheehan types, not because she really wants Murtha in that chair.”
Yup, says the Hill:
“She will ensure that they [the Murtha camp] win. This is hard-ball politics,” said Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.), a longtime Murtha supporter. “We are entering an era where when the Speaker instructs you what to do, you do it.”…
Pelosi’s move was deliberate, Moran said, and she was already leaning on her colleagues to affect the outcome.
“Yes, she’s making calls to people. She is contacting people and letting them know that it’s an unequivocal letter,” Moran said…
Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) said some members had already abandoned Hoyer for Murtha in the wake of Pelosi’s endorsement, a claim the Hoyer camp vigorously denies.
Exit question: which scenario is more likely?
Update: The Senate leadership went a lot smoother: Reid, Durbin, and Schumer.
Update: InstaGlenn floated this idea yesterday and now it’s being talked about at Opinion Journal. From today’s Political Diary, via Slublog:
Each party elects its own congressional leaders but the Speaker is elected by the entire House. That means if Republicans cross the aisle and hand their votes to respected Democratic moderate Steny Hoyer, he would be just a small number of votes shy of being elected speaker. There are still several congressional races underway through recounts so it’s not clear yet precisely how many Republicans there will be in the next Congress. Mr. Hoyer would likely need roughly 15 Democratic votes for speaker in order to beat Ms. Pelosi.
When we put the question to a senior staffer for a Republican leader yesterday, he responded only: “You aren’t the first person to bring this up today.” Such a gambit would require the cooperation of Mr. Hoyer, who may not want to make enemies within his own caucus.
Presumably the GOP would offer its votes as part of a deal whereby Hoyer would name Jane Harman to head intel instead of Alcee Hastings. Hoyer’s powerful enough that he could probably afford to make some enemies, but what about the 15 Democrats who’d be voting with the GOP? Can they afford to, particularly if it would mean torpedoing America’s first woman Speaker? Ain’t gonna happen.

swift-boating = having your past bite you in the ass.

Ah, the self-destruction begins
The Demos have already taken out the Long Knives, as I and many others have predicted. These creeps aren’t happy unless they’re gutting someone, and I am looking forwards to watching them tear each other apart.
Janos Hunyadi on November 14, 2006 at 2:48 PM
Did they get Murtha on audio/video tape? If so, why hasn’t it been played/shown?
EF on November 14, 2006 at 2:50 PM
Seems like both parties are deconstructing. Between Bush’s ammnesty plan, and the Dems penchant to cut off their nose to spite their face, we, the common american, seem screwed. Perhaps this si what we need though. Jefferson said that revolution was needed to keep a free people free. Perhaps it is time for a little chaos. if we survive it then we will be stronger as a nation. If not then we were already dieing.
(Gah, I need happy pills, this post wwas too morose, even by MY standards! )
Wyrd on November 14, 2006 at 2:54 PM
This really proves that this last election was not about how unified the Dems are. They only won by default. No message and no unity can only mean one thing – no Hillary in 2008. This may really turn out to be a 2 year spanking for us. Isn’t being optimistic as fun as sticking your tongue on a red hot burner? Yeah!!!!
Jiggity on November 14, 2006 at 2:57 PM
I cannot actually say what I feel about that traitor John Murtha on this blog because MM, whom I adore and respect beyond mere words, would surely have me thrown off. And right quickly, too.
I so do love that pic of him, though.
Dave R. on November 14, 2006 at 2:57 PM
The real war has not even started yet. The real entertainment will begin when Hillary decides she’s had enough of Pelosi’s power play.

Catfight! Catfight!
RedWinged Blackbird on November 14, 2006 at 3:03 PM
But it really does boil down to a choice between Lucifer and Beelzebub, does it not? We(I) have no dog in this fight, right?
thegreatbeast on November 14, 2006 at 3:05 PM
And what was that big THUMP?, Nancy?
…Oh that was just Murtha under the back wheels.
seejanemom on November 14, 2006 at 3:06 PM
Wow, this is going to be fun!! And it will be more fun if rank-and-file dems rebuke SanFranNan before she even takes the speaker’s gavel.
Also, I love watching this big, rough, tough former marine while like a little bitch when he’s in a political fight and people call him on his past. Schadenfreudean hilarity indeed!!

Wow… didn’t know that ALL members voted on the Speaker…
Reps!!! WAKE UP!!!
This could change a whooollllle lot…
Romeo13 on November 14, 2006 at 3:17 PM
It looks like Pelosi is going to be a “gift that keeps on giving.”
She’s going to push for a CROOK to be the majority leader.
He makes DeLay look like a choir boy.
If the Republicans can’t label the Democrats as the party of corruption and take the House back in 2008, they deserve to be the permanent minority.
georgej on November 14, 2006 at 3:19 PM
They did and some have been showing it. Hannity is playing it right now on the radio.
Esthier on November 14, 2006 at 3:19 PM
Imagine the only time in recent history when the Republicans could get together and vote on something as a block and it has to be while trying to prevent grandma Pelosi from becoming their new overlord.
/oh the irony
LakeRuins on November 14, 2006 at 3:22 PM
Thanks, Esthier. I found a link via wiki to youtube but the link was no good or had been removed.

Would Hillary stand a single Pres. chance with Murtha as Majority leader for two years? Not very likely.
A crook by any other name smells, just as rotten.
Love those ABSCAM tapes.
We should all Email Pelosi and support Murtha.
For a brighter tommorow.
Speakup on November 14, 2006 at 3:24 PM
If Hoyer becomes the leader, what enemies would they worry about? How many Blue Dogs are cringing at Speaker Pelosi, let alone Murtha, Hastings, etc…?
That would be utterly hilarious, and I can see Joe Lieberman trying to spit out a “No comment” while struggling to supress a fit of ROFL.
Pablo on November 14, 2006 at 3:28 PM
EF, try this.

Prediction: Heath Shuler (D-NC) votes for Pelosi, stabs his voters in the back right off the bat.
Speaking from NC…I can tell you that Heath Shuler (D) “seemed” reluctant to back Pelosi during the race in which he beat Charles Taylor (R) in the 11th district in the southwestern part of the state. That area is full of small mountain towns and quite conservative in nature (they tend to elect the old-time southern democrats, not the Pelosi types), and believe me this area would have a hard time lining up with ANY of Pelosi’s SF values. However, I also know that Mzzzzzzz. Pelosi gave at least $6,500 to the Shuler campaign, so it will be interesting to see how hard she pulls on his gumballs to make him vote for her.
SouthernGent on November 14, 2006 at 3:32 PM
…yeah…an apt definition, in light of the John “Mr. Swiftboat” Kerry utterances prior to the poll….
..this definition holds broadly true, unless you’re a Democrat, being “outed” for your wormy past…
…in which case, the *Democratic* definition applies: being ambushed by *irrelevant* truths about your past….
Puritan1648 on November 14, 2006 at 3:36 PM
Squirm you slimy SOB, squirm. There may not have ever been a trial but the world knows you’re a hell of a lot guiltier than those Marines you’re ready to hang.
bdfaith on November 14, 2006 at 3:37 PM
Has anyone mentioned that Murtha is staunchly pro-life? Look at his voting record. He is one of the rare liberals who is pro-life.
Can you imagine the pro-abortion organizations tolerating one more pro-lifer (Reid is pro-life) in a highly visible Democratic leadership position?
Democratics run the sceptrum from conservatives to full-fledged communists and socialists. It is going to be hilarious watching them self-destruct from partisan infighting.
januarius on November 14, 2006 at 3:37 PM
…he also said that the tree of liberty needs to be watered occasionally by the blood of tyrants…the party hacks we’re stuck with today aren’t organized well enough to be proper tyrants…but they’ll do.
Puritan1648 on November 14, 2006 at 3:39 PM
Hmmm…Jane Harman has had a member of her staff suspended for leaking classified information. Alcee Hastings has been impeached (as a judge) for taking bribes. Which of these is the lesser of two evils?
see-dubya on November 14, 2006 at 3:40 PM
Getting those 15 dems would be an uphill battle for sure. I won’t get my hopes up, but I’d love to watch the political earthquake if it did happen. Hell, I’d pay to watch that.
thirteen28 on November 14, 2006 at 3:41 PM
Steny Hoyer’s abortion position: “Rated 100% by NARAL, indicating a pro-choice voting record. (Dec 2003)”
Murtha is pro-life.
Want to wager who gets the position of Majority Leader?
januarius on November 14, 2006 at 3:43 PM
Good question. I guess Republicans can take solace in the fact that we’ll have grounds to bash the choice either way.
Awesome!!
thirteen28 on November 14, 2006 at 3:44 PM
Murtha, I served with Marines. I knew Marines. Marines are friends of mine. Murtha , you’re no Marine
Wade on November 14, 2006 at 3:45 PM
…know how long Henry Clay was in the House before being voted in as Speaker?
…on his very first day.
So far as I know, it’s not codified *anywhere* (other than in the black hearts of party hacks) that you have to be senior to get the Speakership. *ANY* member of the House is eligible…it’s just not likely that you’ll have any support, or even get nominated, unless you’re the party’s man…or, as in this case, plucked chicken….
After seeing the Dems in the Senate line up Durbin and Schumer in “leadership” positions, don’t expect the party of raw political muscle, the party who tried to throw Joe Liebermann under the bus, to stumble in the House.
They’ll elect Pelosi and, maybe, Murtha…there’ll be committee memberships and chairmanships in the hazard, after all, and a lot of hardball played…and the blue-dogs will simmer and boil for a while. Whether they boil over is anybody’s bet.
Puritan1648 on November 14, 2006 at 3:48 PM
“She’s already publicly supported him, but when it comes to actually twisting some arms for some votes, she’s sitting on her hands,” says a House Ways and Means Committee staffer
Hey, not fair, she’s very very busy with the interior decorator.
stenwin77 on November 14, 2006 at 3:50 PM
Should I go there with a SF values snark?
SouthernGent on November 14, 2006 at 3:57 PM
Hey Murtha,
How about someone swift kicks you? like in the ass. Perhaps they wouldn’t know where to begin because you are a complete ass.

stenwin77 on November 14, 2006 at 4:02 PM
…no…Freezer-Man and he coincidently have the same name…Freezer-Man isn’t quotable, that I’m aware of…except, perhaps one day, by a prosecutor….
Puritan1648 on November 14, 2006 at 4:09 PM
Poor Thomas, his great name has been dragged in the freezer by lesser politicians.
I think the most sickening thing is the point of view that this is all about republicans vs democrats. Its not. America is the great lady that will suffer.
As far as I am concerned give all the senators and representatives sticks and lock the doors. let them beat themselves sillier. That won’t hurt America. But when you let them vote, then we are screwed. Is it bad to want to start fresh? If something were to happen (Attention Big Brother, I am not advocating or planning anything big to happen, just saying if) and 90% of our elected officials were to drop out of the picture that would probaly be a good thing. Get new blood into the system. We need people who are not mired down with the BS of DC politics in power. People who read the constitution and actually understand and approve of it.
Wyrd on November 14, 2006 at 4:17 PM
Hmmm… actualy, if the Republicans were smart they would approach this as the ONLY means to build a bipartisan coalition.
Pelosi and her appointees are an abomination… and way left of the incoming more moderate Dems who just won this election.
But this needs to be outfront, not a back door deal. Show the Dems for who they are.

thirteen28 on November 14, 2006 at 4:40 PM
Puritan, not only is any member of the House eligible to be Speaker, but in theory, they could elect someone who isn’t even a member to serve as their Speaker. There isn’t a word in the Constitution what the qualifications of that office are. In theory, they could elect me to the job.
The Monster on November 14, 2006 at 5:05 PM

In gratitude for Monster providing informatin which absolves me of being an idiot talking out of his hat, I nominate him for Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
…that’s one vote…what color do you want for the drapes?
Puritan1648 on November 14, 2006 at 5:26 PM
The GOP helped a group of Dem’s do this a while back. We got burned big time. I’d love to see it happen, but, it won’t do a heck of a lot for us in the long run.
