I like what I have seen of Rudy so far and he would likely pull some moderate and independent support, but having seen Newt's 10 points recently I am convinced he is the man to advance conservative ideas.

He'll need to address the expected values concerns early and pair up with a running mate to neutralize the issue (a la Clinton/Gore).

[...] America's Mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, takes first step towards the White House in 2008. Rudy campaigned for many candidates during this year's mid-term elections and some say that was to boost his rating with the voters around the nation. A big question on analysts minds, however, is will Giuliani be able to snag the Republican nomination because of his past? The Religious Right make up a large portion of the GOP and might not accept Giuliani for his more moderate views. The same problem also lies for Former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, if he decides to run for the Presidency .
I would only vote for Rudy as a hold-my-nose-and-vote candidate if it was him and Hillary in the race. I have no doubt he would be a great guy for defense and terrorism fighting, but he is socially way too liberal for me. If a liberal congress gave him a gun ban bill or a warmed over brady bill I have no doubt he would sign it......and that would suck.

I'm throwing my hat into the ring:

MOMinuteman in '08...

2nd amendment - If you want a Ma Deuce and can afford to feed it and aren't a psycho, why not??

The Border - 20' wall with gun towers every 1/4 mile, a 500 meter deep mine field in front of it with a 500 meter killzone behind it and orders to shoot to kill anyone who makes it through the mines.

The Jihad on America - We kicked the dogsnot outta over 2/3 of the world 60 years ago, and we are MUCH more industrially capable now. Time to ramp up, go balls to the wall, and settle it. And if it comes down to it, nuke 'em all and let Allah sort 'em out.

The rest of the world doesn't like us - SCREW 'EM! With a little re-structuring, we can get by just fine without them, but the reverse is not true for them. A couple of weeks of empty bellies might make them realize we ain't all that bad. And it's better to be our friend than not. The U.N.?? OUTTA HERE!!! And if China and Russia don't like it, tough. China doesn't have the equipment to take us on, and don't tell me about millions of conscripts, a couple of SSBN's will solve that problem. And Russia's crap is so old and worn out that most of it doesn't work due to lack of funds to matain it.

Abortion - Condoms are a cheaper form of birth control and a lot less physically and psychologically painful than abortion, but it's your body, who am I to tell you what to do with it?? But Partial Birth and Late-term abortions are nothing more than murder with the screams muffled.

Special interest groups - I am a simple country boy with simple needs. If I can't get by on around $300k a year, something is severely wrong, and I feel that the rest of the government would be better off with more folks with similar needs.

Taxes - The economy is going like crazy with all tax cuts, so why not make them permanent??

Did I hit the high points that everybody is worried about?? Just relax, enjoy a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas, and Vote For Me in '08!!

There are some things I definately don't like about Giuliani; his anti-2nd amendment stance for one. But I have to give him points for being a damned good leader at a time NY needed a leader. Could you imagine what would have happened had someone like a Kerry, or a Clinton, or a Nagin been Governor during 911? He'd get my vote, but only becuase he's a strong leader and we need more of those right now.

Newt’s a loser. The Dems would love us to pick him–a Right Wing policy wonk.

Oh, believe me, he will be the Republican nominee for president in 2008. If not, then Brownback or Tancredo, none of whom are electable. The primary is going to be fantastic for how nasty it gets. Guiliani and McCain are going to get savaged by the Club for Growth and social conservatives and whoever makes it out alive is going to be severely damaged goods.

Giuliani?!

He is the one who supported the "turn in your neighbor" gun control campaign in NYC. Meanwhile NYC was paying two armed body guards to protect Judi Nathan (Rudy's GF).

I have nothing against the Christian wing, but this is a bad time to cede the “center” to the Dems.

modifiedcontent on November 13, 2006 at 11:59 PM

Nevertheless, this is exactly why the Dems won the last election. It was the "core" that brought Republicans to power in the first place. Although Republicans won many races in '04, the conservatives (who were courted during that time) did not. The real conservatives came out in droves to bring the Republicans to power. The party has lost touch with that and guess what...they lost.

Romney is a talking suit. Frist is boring. McCain can't be trusted and is too old. Gingrich unfortunately is just not very likeable.

The Republicans need a candidate that can attract votes across party lines. Rudy Giuliani is perfect. He understands the stakes and is a real person when he talks.

The worst thing Republicans could do is "go back to their base" for '08 and let the most inflexible Christian wing veto who's acceptable as a candidate.

He's for abortion on demand...
He's for affirmative action....
He's for gay marriage....

OK he is tough on terrorists and crime.

I like Rudy, but what is he for beyond the New York 9-11 leadership? He was not popular with the Politburo (how ever you spell that Soviet group). I have nothing against Rudy at all, I like the way he sounds, but what is there?

Negative, is that he is from New York, maybe I am being prejudice about people who do not live in New York, but perhaps they don't like New York politicians, image as sleazy or something like that? Will the rest of the USA be able to relate to a New Yorker?

Heard Mitt Romney on Sean Hannity, tonight, driving home. He sounds interesting. Seems to have some sort of determination. I don't know much about him beyond some blurbs and name recognition. Mitt said it is too early, wait till after all the holidays.

Then McCain, I can't turst him, he might be too old, and been through a lot, what about mental stability. He holds finger up in the air, he can go any direction.

Newt, has it all out in the open. People will get his message, perhaps over look things and think things will get done, but will they trust him?

All in all, the debates will filter out some, the press will create bad things about people and filter some more. We can end up with people we never even thought of at this moment. Perhaps people we like and discover we don't like them.

RobetCSampson, agree with you. Let him run and he still needs a running mate. It will all sort itself out. We must, however, remain practical and not idealistic in the abstract. Winning with strong leaders for these times is the ticket!

Dont you guys know it doesn't matter who the Republican candidate is? The libs and MSM will villify them and create "baggage". There is no contest between Newt and any of these other guys. The man HAS a plan. Its in his recent book. He also has a track record. Newt is a true American patriot and statesman, these other cats are just posers.

I'm voting for Rudy. Steele VP.

Steele is very strong in the public events. He radiates strength and competence. Regardless of his resume etc, I think he would be thstrongest running mate because people will vote for him, and very few will vote against him as would happen with Newt.

Danno, I agree with you on Newt and the ethics witchhunt and the Clintonista paragons of morals and ethics. They couldn't lay a glove on him because their 'troops' excuse any and all which Mr. Clinton did or imagined. Also, to have Newt on the ticket would make the Libs furious, especially the Clinton camp.

Is there a man who meets the second condition but not the first?

Pablo on November 13, 2006 at 6:49 PM

On the first condition, we're all flawed, and should, thus, not be so judgemental. On the second, physically, I hope not. Figuratively, my friend, oh so many. And many are in Wash. D.C. or want to be. Pure jellyfish for spines! No, thank you!

My dream ticket: Giuliani/Steele. Rudy's a national hero. Plus he ran New York City. Running the nation should be a walk in the park.

I could also, theoretically (in my best SWAG analysis - that's "scientific wild-assed guess), put Steele within reach of the White House in '16. I remember back in 1988, a political analyst named Frank Jones said the first black in the White House will be a conservative. I've tended to believe him for all these years.

Or maybe Newt would work, too. He'd be the first president who had a his own set of paper dolls.

Regardless. . GO RUDY!
