Video: Women as human shields at the al-Nasr mosque

It’s their choice! Sort of:

Palestinian mothers and wives braved Israeli helicopter gunships on Friday to rescue 15 fighters besieged in a northern Gaza mosque, using their heavily veiled bodies as human shields…

Around 200 women then left the main protest to march on and enter the mosque around 700 metres (yards) away to collect the gunmen, before walking out again, cloaking the fighters in the middle of their heavily veiled ranks…

A source in Hamas confirmed that its armed wing had orchestrated what he called a “complex security operation” to secure the release of the besieged fighters.

Our pal kasper kasper sends word that the Beeb caught part of it on tape. Click here and fast forward to 2:20. Stick with it or else you’ll miss the female suicide bomber.

Fatah — the party of “moderate” Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas — is threatening terror attacks on America this morning in response to the U.S. veto yesterday at the UN. Palestinian Christians are starting to abandon the West Bank and Gaza because the religious climate’s simply gotten too dangerous for them.

Meanwhile, British academics have implemented a “silent boycott” — of Israel.

Adeptus on November 12, 2006 at 1:37 PM

When the US pulls out of Iraq and Afghanistan due to Dem pressure and begins talks with the terrorists (I can’t believe I just said that!), Israel will be totally alone.

Even cornered rabbits fight back and I fully expect Israel to lash out in every direction…..verbally and militarily.

TwinkietheKid on November 12, 2006 at 1:41 PM

Since I am unable to view the video (can’t figure out why), can you answer this: are you SURE they were all “women?” or could they have been the militants in disguise?

pullingmyhairout on November 12, 2006 at 1:41 PM

Wait, so women run between two sides of people who are fighting and then are shocked that some of them get killed?!?

EnochCain on November 12, 2006 at 1:45 PM

Meanwhile, British academics have implemented a “silent boycott” — of Israel.

Mix a stereotypically British imperial attitude with Leftism and you get most obnoxious thing on the planet. Watching them be forced to convert to Islam will probably be the only pleasure of an Islamic takeover of Britain.

By the way, this is not the first time that the British profs have threatened to boycott Israel; they do this periodically. Here is a link with professors from around the world stating their displeasure at the English leftists’ boycott from about four years ago. I was happy that one of my favorite professors, Janice Turner, an athropologist and Asian studies specialist from my time as a student at UMUC Asia had signed it.

I wonder what has happened to all those in Venezuela who signed the protest.

januarius on November 12, 2006 at 1:51 PM

I’d have shot them.

I mean, come on. You telling me we’d let 15 SS figthers go because a group of German Nazi women surrounded them?

We bombed German cities bach when we knew how to fight a war.

Now, we only know how to lose a serious war of wills and to jeapordize our civilization and children’s survival. Thanks Mr. Bush.

Christoph on November 12, 2006 at 1:56 PM

are you SURE they were all “women?” or could they have been the militants in disguise?

Are you asking Allah if he’s seen their naughty bits?

EF on November 12, 2006 at 2:01 PM

I’m getting to the point where I’d say just shoot them all if they’re willing to be combatants in a war zone, their lives are now forfeit

Defector01 on November 12, 2006 at 2:01 PM

Isn’t there a picture of a guy holding a sign that says “if women and children are in the line of fire, israel must hold its fire no matter what” I think its on zombietime or somethign.

lorien1973 on November 12, 2006 at 2:02 PM

How many virgins do you get if you’re killed as a human shield?

Do martyred Muslim women even get virgins?

Maybe their heavenly reward is being able to show their face and not get beaten.

Allah Akbar!!

Rosetta on November 12, 2006 at 2:06 PM

Meanwhile, British academics have implemented a “silent boycott” — of Israel.

Here is a list of all the American profs who have signed the protest from when the British leftist professors tried boycotting Israel in 2003.
http://euroisrael.huji.ac.il/usa.html

The fact that you see no Muslim names or any Muslim countries might tell you something about academic freedom in the Muslim world and why they haven’t progressed much from their golden age of circa 700-900 A.D.

Can these leftist British profs see the irony? They probably won’t until they are in burkas or are about to be executed.

januarius on November 12, 2006 at 2:07 PM

I agree with Christoph. I’ve decided that I want the West to win this war and we’re not up to the task – yet! I can’t wait for all hell to break loose and we’ll go all out to win this thing.

I bet the Palestinian men probably don’t care if they find shrapnel in their meat.

Canadian Infidel on November 12, 2006 at 2:16 PM

They show no remorse for shooting our female soldiers. Just because they wear a different uniform theirs should be exempt?

bbz123 on November 12, 2006 at 2:17 PM

Maybe their heavenly reward is being able to show their face and not get beaten.

Heh. Good one!

SouthernGent on November 12, 2006 at 2:19 PM

Maybe their heavenly reward is being able to show their face and not get beaten.

Silly rabbit. Women are just meat. They are supposed to get beaten. Get with it, man. Geesh.

lorien1973 on November 12, 2006 at 2:25 PM

I think the Israeli’s would say those woman had ‘Chutzpah!’.

Now if those women ran into the field of fire to stop BOTH sides I would say they were stupid. But to run into the field of fire to stop ONE side from firing…well I would say they are targets. Brave…nope. Righteous…nope. Just another enemy target.

Limerick on November 12, 2006 at 2:26 PM

Pull the trigger !

DoctorDentons on November 12, 2006 at 2:27 PM

This comment was one I placed at http://strata-sphere.com/blog/index.php/archives/2932 (AJStrata’s blog) to a HotAir commentator, Limerick, whom I agree often, but who seems to misinterpret much of what I say probably because I right poorly.

I’m going to repost it here because I’m lazy and would rather not rewrite it all and because it touches on the topic we’re discussing, which comes down to the application of force.

Note while reading my comment that I refer to legitimate collateral damage of innocent people who, tremendously sadly, get caught up in war.

The situation at the northern Gaza mosque is less innocent because the women are not mere innocent bystanders, they are knowingly putting themselves between combatants with the intention of aiding one side. They are making themselves enemy collabarators / participants if not combatants (their actions are designed to support their combatants in living and fighting again) and in my books, they are valid targets themselves.

“From your HotAir comments you are simply one of the impeach bush crowd.”

Limerick, what the hell are you smoking?

I have never, ever called for the impeachment of George W. Bush. Generally speaking, I love the man.

I criticize some aspects of his policy, mostly that he has not fought the war with as much force, breadth and disregard for collateral damage (but eye toward reaching crucial military goals) as he should have.

Where he has failed, it has been on account of his being a decent man who doesn’t want to cause more death. Even still, his strategy would work because he is very resolute himself if only his country was too. Please don’t tell me that the American voter excels at relentlessly pursuing long wars to successful conclusions, because s/he doesn’t.

Insurgencies do take a long time to put down… which is why more should have been done to apply dominant force widely during the beginning (to reduce that time). I’m not talking just more troops, but more air power in and outside of Iraq and naval power too — including flexing of U.S. muscle against Iran and Syria.

Not stopping those regimes from reinforcing and leading the insurgent fight in Iraq was a huge strategic mistake: neither a high crime nor misdemeanor, just bad judgment. George W. Bush has a generally well-rounded view of history (he unlike most Presidents has a degree in it), but he has an inadequate grasp of successful military history.

On the domestic front, he’s again motivated by his admirable faith to do things the federal government isn’t particularly good at doing like running social programs (creating prescription drug entitlement, expanding education spending). And he’s also not taking serious steps to control the border because, like the Catholic Bishops, he cares more about the human dignity of every individual person trying to make a better life for him or herself than the desire of most Americans to more completely control immigration.

But where in any of this do you draw the conclusion that I advocate impeaching Bush?

The above, also, are only areas where I criticize him… in most areas: pro-life, etc., I agree with him.

Christoph on November 12, 2006 at 2:28 PM

Christoph I apologized for those comments. You want to bag me fine. I was wrong. I acknowledge such.

Limerick on November 12, 2006 at 2:29 PM

pullingmyhairout on November 12, 2006 at 1:41 PM

Pullingmyhairout, although it doesn’t happen often, male terrorists have disguised themselves as women in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq.

I haven’t watched this video yet either, but in other news reports about this, I remember reading that the Palestinian women were bringing in extra burkas for the explicit purpose of disguising some of the male terrorist to get them past the Israelis.

EFG on November 12, 2006 at 2:31 PM

Limerick, it’s not in an adversarial sense that I respond. I don’t dislike you. We probably agree more than we disagree.

I’m just saying the above because it’s relevant and on topic (broadly) and also to clarify for you my position.

Christoph on November 12, 2006 at 2:33 PM

Besides I wasn’t smoking Christoph…I was drinking. No excuse, can we snuggle now?

Limerick on November 12, 2006 at 2:33 PM

The Beeb sure loves a story. The jihadis sure loves martyrs. Israel should give them plenty of both and get it bloody well over.

spmat on November 12, 2006 at 2:43 PM

So, yes, Limerick, I accept your apology, but it’s not really necessary. I criticize arguments and positions that I disagree with regardless of how I feel about the person.

I’m not so stuck on loyalty that I’d agree with a war strategy that isn’t working well. (It’s working, just slower than the American political cycle gives time for, which is to say it isn’t working.)

Likewise, when a liberal whom I despise as a baby-murdering bastard says something smart, I’ll go along.

Bill Clinton was in my Canadian city on November 10th and he met with my Provincial Premier, Gordon Campbell, whom I’ve met in person and admire greatly. He’s probably the best Provincial Premier we’ve had in decades. The first one to actually serve two terms, anyway, and he isn’t being investigated by the cops.

Before he took office, we had a massive exodus of young people to Alberta, the nearest province, because no one could get a job here. Campbell instituted a very conservative program of income tax cuts (virtually identical to the Bush tax cuts) and relaxed regulations.

He turned the province around. Now we have our largest surplusses ever (before a sea of red ink) and people are moving here again. I don’t have to listen to all my friends tell me about their plans to leave the province as soon as they can. Trust me, that was annoying. It was reason enough to vote for the man and I wish I’d remembered to tell him so.

So Campbell’s a fiscal conservative who leads the misnamed BC Liberal Party (long story, don’t sweat it). And Bill Clinton was thanking Canada for our military commitment to Afghanistan, complimenting Canadian soldiers, and reminding everyone that while hard, the work we were doing was very important and good (his choice of word) work we should feel proud of.

Clinton also called for other NATO countries to come forward with more troops and for America to aid Canada with more solidiers in Afghanistan where our forces are bearing the brunt of the land combat.

So I agree with Clinton here and these two men — on opposite sides of the political spectrum on most subjects — agreed with each other.

Complimenting Bill Clinton when he’s right doesn’t make me his supporter any more than criticizing George W. Bush when I think he’s wrong makes me his enemy.

Let me think on your invitation to snuggle.

Christoph on November 12, 2006 at 2:45 PM

Bleh.. “The jihadis sure love martyrs.” Case agreement FTL.

spmat on November 12, 2006 at 2:45 PM

P*ssies.

seejanemom on November 12, 2006 at 3:09 PM

Ummm, yummy p*ssies. Hey, I’m not criticizing them for that!

Christoph on November 12, 2006 at 3:11 PM

Since I am unable to view the video (can’t figure out why), can you answer this: are you SURE they were all “women?” or could they have been the militants in disguise?

They mention in the video that disguising the fighters in women’s clothing was an option that they were considering if they had to. The reporters later caught up with one of the injured fighters in the hospital and he denied using women’s clothing to escape. Make of that what you will.

bookwurm322 on November 12, 2006 at 3:27 PM

are you SURE they were all “women?” or could they have been the militants in disguise?

Drawing on ideas from several recent stories, we should extend the jurisdiction of New York’s human-rights-whatever ordinance to encompass the whole world and declare the human shields to be men. Problem solved.

Whatever happened to equality, anyway?

Coyote D. on November 12, 2006 at 3:27 PM

So if the situation were reversed and it was American or Israeli men trapped my Islamics and American and/or Israeli women, or even Muslim women for that matter, stood in the line of fire to help them escape. How long do you suppose the Islamics would hold their fire?

Maxx on November 12, 2006 at 3:40 PM

Oh, ’bout half a second, Maxx.

We can see how these anilmals value the lives of their women. I suppose the N.O.W. sees this as an example of “strong women”.

Tony737 on November 12, 2006 at 3:54 PM

“I’d have shot them.”

Yes, I concur.

First film them to show they are not “innocents”, then take them out. Also, quickly put out the footage on YouTube to mitigate somewhat the backlash.

This escape tactic of the enemy must be destroyed and discredited.

purpleslog on November 12, 2006 at 3:55 PM

Good points purpleslog, but I say to hell with the backlash. We will be vilified no matter what we do,so let’s do something that will be effective for our side.

bbz123 on November 12, 2006 at 4:02 PM

Imagine that some Israeli soldiers were trapped by Hamas or Hezbo fighters and Israeli women came in their hundreds to act as human shields. What would happen?

I think we all know what would happen. Next question, how would the media report it?

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi hid behind a burka in Iraq to evade detection.

aengus on November 12, 2006 at 5:13 PM

…if the Beeb gave as worshipful a treatment in their coverage of coaltion forces in Iraq, we’d probably have fewer homicide bombings…the bad guys would see that they’re swimming against the tide, and — ever attunded to international opinion and skillful at manipulating it — would change tactics. As it is, they’re emboldened.

From the tone of the coverage, I almost felt sorry for the poor “Palestinian” “fighters”.

If the Israelis had warned the “human shield’ women, and then openned up on them with .50 cals when they didn’t move, I’d've been out of my chair cheering.

I don’t have a lot of use for the Israelis, particularly in regards to their almost amateurish showing of a few months ago against the Bozos up in Lebanon — troops running out of water?! — they *DO* know how to throw a party. They *do* have to look to DC for continued good will from there, and, as has been proven time and again, DC will buckle if things “look bad”…designer dead babies on display, women keening at annoyingly shrill and high volume, holes in the walls of residential structures, some informed sounding mug waffling on about Israeli “miss-aisles”…it’s heavy-handed propagandizing, but the American MSM eat it up.

These are people who danced in the streets on 9/11…their “moderates” announced intentions would make Klaus Barbie look like an aroma therapist…they wax all indignant that their religious buildings are struck, but hide in churches and mosques at the drop of a head-rag. The only reason that they come off poorly in these dust-ups isn’t because the Israelis hold all the cards, have all the nifty weapons, etc. The “Palestinians” are just bloody *STUPID*. If they weren’t, they’d find a better way of proceeding, one more profitable than sending their young *WOMEN* now off to blow themselves up…which, if the one in the clip is the case I read about recently, wasn’t even very efficient. She killed herself and only wounded her targets.

If these medieval troglodytes continue to chant “Death to the West”, get worked-up into homicidal frenzies over *CARTOONS*, and continue this “hit American targets” bluster…I let slip the Israeli leash. Let it run red. They want “martyrs”, give ‘em martyrs. If that means those “plain-brown wrapper” women of theirs, that much better. Don’t forget to whack their pets, and piddle in their aquariums on the way back to the kibbutz.

If the Palestinians weren’t so transcendentally stupid, they’d be a *REAL* threat…they recruit for “fighters” against our guys in Iraq, and are the focus of outrage by forces and countries which actually *CAN* do nasty things. They need to pull in their horns and act like grown-ups…or suffer the consequences.

The problem isn’t with these mad-dogs. You count upon a suicidal idiot to be a suicidal idiot. The problem is with the Beeb, and with all the other uncritical observers allowed in to film them (cutting CNN-like deals, are we?). It’s not even that they try make these “fighters” look noble — can you say “lipstick on a pig”? — it’s that they make those who stand up to them look like Nazis.

…fine…if you’re going to look like a Nazi, *LOOK* like a Nazi…clean their clocks…and, if you can “Rachel Corrie”-ify a few Beeb-ites along with ‘em, so much the better.

I agree — after my own fashion — with that insipid quote on that disgusting Arizonal 9/11 “memorial”…you don’t win the battle against terror with more battles. You win it with *TERROR*…the guys who’re arrayed against you need to pee themselves at the very notion that you might’ve twitched a whisker in pique at their existence. You win it with bombings, door-bashing and lots of ball ammo…applied liberally, to surgically designated parts of their collective organizational anatomy.

If they stand up with a clenched fist and a slogan, posing for the cover of the next issue of “Martyr Monthly”, let ‘em have it…and *ANYONE* who stands within the burst radius. Make ‘em pay for this continual and decades long dirge of “Death to…”. Let ‘em see sort of death “Death to…” buys you.

You can’t talk with ‘em, because they can’t be trusted. They aren’t going away. They teach their children to die in their turn, so it’s a self-perpetuating cycle of suicide.

So…give ‘em the martyrdom they’re crying out for…when there’re no two bricks lying one-atop-the-other, their family’s been rendered into their major component parts and everybody’s ears are ringing, they might just see sense.

…if not…continue prescription until the disease or the patient is no longer a problem.

(I don’t apologize for *ANY* of the above. It’s not nice, but this is not a nice state of affairs.)

its a war, a church or mosque being used is a farce, i would bomb the shit out of it,, not even wasting a second on thinking about it…

These women made themselves military targets by shielding terrorists. They should’ve been fired upon but now those terrorists are free to kill others at a leter time. This is no way to fight a war.

Also, I often wonder about all those “innocent civilian” deaths from Israeli soldiers. I wonder just how many of those “innocents” were human shields and Israeli troops had enough of it and popped their asses.

Yakko77 on November 12, 2006 at 10:17 PM

We shall pay for concern for appearances.

Puritan1648 on November 12, 2006 at 11:04 PM

I’m reminded of a cartoon that was popular a while back. It showed a terrorist and an IDF soldier with rifles pointed at each other. The terrorist hiding behind a baby carriage, the IDF solder situated protectively in front of another carriage. Just replace the baby carriages with women and repeat.

taznar on November 13, 2006 at 1:42 PM

A mosque, a church or whatever is just a building!
It’s what you do inside that makes the difference.
If you are praising god it’s a church, if on the other hand
you are plotting to kill, indoctrinating jihadis, or shooting
from the building it is a military target. Level it and
everyonr in and around it!!!

Gooch on November 13, 2006 at 2:43 PM

Or maybe everyone in it as opposed to everyonr.
