Bush resubmits Bolton’s nomination to Senate; Update: Chafee will oppose Bolton

I don’t get it. The plan supposedly is to try to push him through the lame-duck Republican-controlled Congress, but the Democrats have already filibustered him once before. They’re not going to let him sail through now when they kill the nomination in committee in January.
I think Newsmax had it right this morning. He’s DOA. Presumably Bush sent the nomination back up as a sop to the base, to force the Dems to shoot him down; after having handed them Rumsfeld’s scalp yesterday, he must know that we wouldn’t look kindly on Bolton getting thrown under the bus too. According to Andrea Koppel, reporting on this about a half hour ago for CNN, an aide to Biden is already expressing disappointment that Bush hasn’t embraced the new spirit of bipartisan yadda yadda.
Exit question: could he keep Bolton on with a second recess appointment? I heard someone on Fox say the other day that such a move would probably be legal — but that they might not be allowed to pay him a salary(!).
Update: Good ol’ Linc, dicking us over ’til the bitter end. I’m glad to see him go. But alas, Bolton is done:
Sen. Lincoln Chafee, R-R.I., who was defeated by Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse on Tuesday, told reporters in Rhode Island on Thursday that he would continue opposing Bolton. That would deny Republicans the votes they would need to move Bolton’s nomination from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to the full Senate.
Democrats indicated that even should the Senate try debating Bolton’s nomination when lawmakers reconvene next week — still under Republican control — they would stretch out debate on Bolton with the aim of killing it.
“I see no point in considering Mr. Bolton’s nomination again in the Foreign Relations Committee because regardless of what happens there, he is unlikely to be considered by the full Senate,” said Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee.

Bravo!
Bush didn’t betray us on this one. Bolton is the best guy for the job. He is a badass. The UN needs him to clean their crap up.
Now I have some faith in Bush. Don’t be afraid of those liberals.

And filibustering him isn’t? Biden is such a maroon.
And let’s face it, Delaware isn’t even a real state.

Bolton has been doing a hell of a job.
These will be great hearings. Filibuster goes both ways, and the Dems are about to take control. If the WH releases whatever docs they’re supposedly sitting on, what’s the argument against him?

by the way, it could be that it’s part of the “compromise”. You give us Rummy, we’ll pass through Bolton…. wait for it. Wait for it.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Right – compromise by the Dems.

I like Bolton…the UN is a cesspool, and he seems to call them on it. Aren’t Democrats the ones who talk about honesty and full visibility and accountability (unless of course Harry Reid is involved). This is the Conservative equivelant of the Market Crash of 1929…to much marginal trading with regard to political capital (stretch of an analogy I know…but in my head it’s brilliant).
StoutRepublican on November 9, 2006 at 2:34 PM
Wouldn’t it be great if they instituted the nuclear option now as a big FU to the left on the way out?
Too bad. We can count on the RINOs…to never exhibit any guts–or do what’s right as opposed to expedient.

I think it’s a smart move either way. He gave them Rumsfeld, now we will get to see if they can be “bipartisan” and magnanimous in their victory and refrain from a filibuster. If they don’t filibuster, Bolton gets through without a recess appointment this time. If they do (which I think they will, for the record), it will be an early revelation that, as usual, democratic “bipartisanship” is a one-way street.
thirteen28 on November 9, 2006 at 2:44 PM
They’re always a day late and a dollar short. If they make a rule change now (nuclear option) then they will be without the fillibuster when the Dems take over. If they go all out to win this one then they’ll become toothles slaves for at least the next two years.

natesnake on November 9, 2006 at 2:46 PM
It’s a good move. Bolton has been quite visible on TV and has been shown performing well, so that any filibustering will be seen as a partisan attack.
tommuck on November 9, 2006 at 2:47 PM
My first preference would be to disband the UN alltogether (at the very least send them packing to a new home far, far away and let someone else foot the bill). But as that is obviously not going to happen, trying to keep Bolton there is a good move.

…I couldn’t agree more. The Dems are out for scalps, determined to settle scores within *DAYS* of victory….
…in the space of two days, Bush has turned a defeat into a *ROUT*…and is losing, not as a trickle but as a flood, those who stuck up for him for the previous six years. Medicare drug coverage, his partisans dance and excuse. Soft as pudding on the border, his partisans dance and excuse. Fights the war like a Sunday outing, his partisans dance and excuse.
…and I was firmly in that camp. No more.
The Republicans are on their backs, offering their bellies to the Democrats. It’s not enough for them to lose. They have to be submissive.
There *IS* no bipartisanship with the champions defeat and surrender. You can’t “look presidential” when you’re being made the “prison b*tch” of traitors.
Organize and fight. The Republicans should never again expect to take *ANYTHING* for granted. By emboldening the likes of Pelosi, Biden and the Party of bin Laden, they will have to earn their way back. In the meantime, I plan to ignore (R)’s after names…I will assume nothing, and expect less than nothing. The Republicans are infamous, by their own hand.
Conservative or nothing. The die is cast.

Filibuster! Filibuster! If Jorge plays the filibuster card now, after all the opportunities he’s had to force the Dems to go to the mattresses over the past 6 years and show themselves for what they are, he’s a bigger jerk than I take him for.

I think renominating Bolton could be a smart move.
Bolton has been very pro-active in pressing American’s interests at the UN.
So now Bush gives them a choice: Support or oppose a strong US guy at the UN.
If the Democrats support him, we all win. Bolton goes back to the UN, and the democratic party takes it’s first step towards maturity.
If the Democrats oppose him, they will open themselves to Republican counter attacks of being partisan about all of this. That makes the democrats the bad guys.

EFG on November 9, 2006 at 4:02 PM
Chafee is such a dirt bag. Stab us in the back one more time, on your way out, jerk.
Bolton has been the best thing for the UN since they got to put their headquarters on our soil and make us pay for the whole thing. They don’t know what they need, like children. Nuking Bolton is surely in the Dhims playbook, but if anyone’s paying attention anymore they’ll make some enemies.
NTWR on November 9, 2006 at 4:10 PM
Who in the “normal people” even know or care who Bolton is. Be real. Democrats know this. No one will care, especially after the Media frames the debate over what an extremist he is.
This is what the democrats live by. People’s ignorance and not paying attention to what is going on. And democrats know that no one pays attention, so no one will care.
If you think otherwise, you are blind to reality.
lorien1973 on November 9, 2006 at 4:11 PM

Chafee’s loss is no loss at all.
Rush Limbaugh got it correct when he said that dumping Rumsfeld would just embolden the Democrats to go after more scalps.
It is a good idea to submit Bolton’s nomination again.
1. It tests whether Pelosi and Reid really mean it.
2. It does give heart to the “base” that he hasn’t rolled over on his back, tail between his legs, and pee-ed on his belly as a result of the election. We’ll see….
3. It puts the Democrats on record.
One of the things I most admired about Bork is when he insisted on the confirmation vote anyway, knowing that he probably didn’t have the votes for confirmation.
If I were Bolton, I’d want the same.

…Chafee…a leftist Republican from Rhode Island….
While I’m sure that he’s hoping to position himself as a man of principle, he has to wake up to the inevitable fact that nobody *cares* if he’s a man of principle. He’s a bastard from a defeated party, in the only state you can cross long-ways on a quarter tank of gas. Rhode Island is made up of the parts of eastern Connecticut folks in Hartford thought was too swampy to incorporate. When the toilets in Massachusetts flush, the water level in Providence raises.
Chafee had no business in the Senate in the first place…Rhode Island shouldn’t be allotted a senator…an alderman, yes…maybe someone who could sit with the “observer” from DC…but a *senator*?
Thirteen colonies be damned…if Rhode Island is due a senator, give one to Houston, one to Atlanta, and two to LA.
I cannot bring myself to compare Chafee to any of the normal vermin one sees when gardening…one could easily turn over any rock or dig though any dog dropping in the yard and find a more deserving life form than this elitist whack-job.

I’m all for W sending Bolton back with a second recess appointment. Who says it has to be pro bono? W should treat the Senate re: Bolton just as he treated the UN re: Iraq. If he gets filibustered, ask us to pay him directly. It’s all possible with Paypal. 15,000 supporters x $10 each sounds good to me.
Regarding Lincoln Chafee, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. By allowing him to be called a Republican, the party weakens itself. Could someone please tell me why Chafee hasn’t been removed from this committee and replaced with someone who is at least Republican enough to vote for W?
flutejpl on November 9, 2006 at 4:50 PM
…he’s not gone yet…he still has this last betrayal to get out of his craw….
The notion of running hard on Bolton now, trying to ramrod it through a lame-duck Congress, would work…if not for a zero like Chafee…and for other ambitious losers from a party of losers, who will lukewarmly take up the issue, I expect.
John Bolton has done a good job, and I have yet to see during his short tenure where he’s manifested any of the “extremist” tendencies he’s accused of harboring.
He’s styled an extremist by his opponents — most of them extremists out on the other fringe of the political spectrum from where he’s supposed to reside — for pointing out that the UN is anti-American (which it’s been since the Soviets and their satellites introduced 4 out of 5 UN initiatives), is corrupt (which Kofi and his minions have shown us with crystal clarity is most certainly the case), and all the rest. He’s compotent to fill the position and represent a sovereign nation in a collection of nations…which is probably the *ONE* thing of which he’s most blackly guilty in the minds of his internationalist opposition.
He stands up for the US. For that, he’s as good as crucified.

Zorro is definitely onto something. Specter was a complete no-show for Santorum despite Rick sticking his neck out, and subsequently getting it chopped off, by siding with Specter against Toomey. Chaffee shows how similarly unappreciative he is by going completely RINO by opposing the Bolton nomination (re-nomination?), after the GOP backed Chaffee for no principled reason in the primary. If conservatives learn anything, please let it be that RINOs are the cancer (with all due respect to Mr. Specter, sincerely) of the Republican party.
