Rumor: Bush to announce Rumsfeld’s resignation? Update: AP — RUMSFELD QUITS, to be replaced by Robert Gates

A friend just phoned to say that Rush Limbaugh was talking about this at the beginning of today’s show. Supposedly there are “whispers” that today’s press conference isn’t going to be the standard “we look forward to working with the opposition” shinola that we’re expecting.
Texas Rainmaker is hearing there’ll be a “significant announcement” too.
Video of the press conference will be posted here.
The prospect of Bush sending Rumsfeld packing the morning after a hugely disspiriting loss, while Pelosi’s still giving press conferences, is excruciatingly depressing and ominous. Can him if you want, but for god’s sake, wait a week. This would be like presenting the left with his head on a platter.
If it does happen, who replaces him? Joementum?
Update: The rumors are true. Fox says the AP is reporting that Rumsfeld is “stepping down.”
Update: News moves quickly.
Update: Her wish is our command. Comments made an hour ago:
Pressed by another reporter on Iraq, Pelosi said President Bush must “signal a change of direction.” She said one good place to start would be to “change the civilian leadership at the Pentagon” – get rid of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, in other words.
“That would signal an openness to new, fresh ideas on the subject,” she said. She indicated she’ll discuss that with Bush in future meetings.
Update: Fox is reporting that Rumsfeld will be replaced by former DCIA Robert Gates.
Update: Bush says after a series of “thoughtful discussions” both he and Rumsfeld agreed that the “time is right” for new leadership.
Update: A reporter asked him why he said a week ago that he wanted Rumsfeld to stay on. Bush’s answer (in so many words): because he didn’t want to spring an October surprise.
Update: Slublog speculates in the comments:
I think this had to be done, and quickly. I think Bush wants to get Gates confirmed before the new Senate is seated, because the WH knows we’ve lost Congress. Rumsfeld is a lightning rod for criticism, and would have been used as justification to pull funding for the war and for the Dems to pick away at the administration.
I don’t like it, but I can see why they did it.

Bush just said he should have done a better job “explaining” himself and what he meant by “stay the course.”
Newsflash to Bush: You are a little too late now. You should have explained yourself better 6 months ago.
pullingmyhairout on November 8, 2006 at 1:23 PM
Let’s see. Rice will be next, then Bolton, then Gonzales–because Ted *hiccup* Kennedy won’t work with him, then Chertoff, and then they’ll start impeachment hearings of Bush and Cheney…
And then, by summer of 2007, we’ll host the inauguration of the next Madam President Nancy Pelosi.
Enoxo on November 8, 2006 at 1:23 PM
Guys, look, Rummy being gone can be looked at in one of two ways.
Political/Partisan
Militarily/Practically
Yeah, we all hate the idea of loosing Rummy because of the new reign of Nancy Pelosi. Sticks in my craw too. But that isn’t the main point as far as I’m concerned.
What I’m concerned about is his replacement, and how it affects the war on terror and Iraq. My question is this: Will this new guy Gates help or hurt our efforts in Iraq?
If he can do a better job than Rummy, well great. See you later Rummy and welcome aboard Gates! That is a cause for celebration.
If he can’t, well, then this is a horrible decision.
I’d rather see this thread move from less of a “oh, the democrats are being mean, this sucks” to asking the important questions.
1) Is this guy going to help us put more jihadists in the grave?
2) Is this guy going to help us reduce the casulty rates of US troops while still accomplishing goal number 1?
If he can do the above two things, then I won’t miss Rummy for a minute. I don’t hate Rummy. But this is bigger and more important than worrying about if our feelings, or Rummys feelings are hurt.
Killing jihadists.
Reducing US causualties.
That’s what I care about.

So if he knew Rusfeld was going he could have announced it earlier, maybe lots earlier and saves some spilled Republican blood.
Maybe he didn’t want to win an election at Rumy’s expense. Would these actions make Bush a bigger or a smaller man? Is it just his famed stuborness?
Is the uniting going to be that we all get more and more fed up with Bush?

Farewell to the best Secretary of Defense we ever had. Rumsfeld joins the ranks of men who waged war well for their country, then were done in by low politics. It’s a fate akin to Pericles and Belisarius.

The pentagon and the Joint Chiefs handle more of the day to day operations, and that willb e the same.

Screw Rumsfeld! I’m not suprised one bit that he is going and I am not shedding a single tear. Changing tactics in Iraq will mean that the original plan was wrong and we all know Rumsfeld can never admit that he is wrong. I will miss him telling the MSM to go screw themselves, but as fun at that was, we have more important things to do, like win a war. We need a SecDef that will be open to suggestions. Rummy’s his way or the highway has run its course and its time for him to hit the road.

We all have different ways of working through the stages. Acceptance will come soon enough, but what we really need is resolve.
Overall, I’ve been impressed with the way Republicans have handled this. No calls for recounts or legal action, no threats to take to the streets. Just some good old fashioned anger and some looking forward to the fights to come.
Let’s do this.
Slublog on November 8, 2006 at 1:55 PM
Editor, you’re right. Same could be said for the economy. 4.4 percent unemployment, DOW above 12,000, etc etc but the media doesn’t talk about and neither do the Pubbies!
When Klinton was Prez the unemployment rate was 5.6 percent and the media went nuts about it. The DOW hit 10,000 and the media went nuts about it. They told us what a great success Bosnia was but they lie to us about the success in Iraq. This has been the standard for a long time but I noticed it really racheted up right after the ‘04 election results.
Funny how they compare Iraq to Vietnam. The only thing simular about the two is that the media’s lying about our success there.
Tony737 on November 8, 2006 at 1:56 PM
I would much rather see Rice resign than Rumsfeld. The conservative advisers are not the ones who wanted to fight a politically correct, postmodern war in Iraq.
It looks like Bush is doing what he does best: appease Democrats. He is going to get nothing in return.
Do you think the guy will ever use his veto?

Fine. For your sake I’ll clean up.
This country is about to be sodomized by the Democrats, who have spent the vast majority of their time defecating on everything conservatism stands for, and whom George Bush is ostensibly trying to appease with his talk of comprehensive immigration reform, said reform being the most idiotic load of road apples to come out of the mind of a Republican leader in years.

Shortly after 9/11, I heard a morning radio personality talk about Rumsfeld. “He’s like the grandpa that’s always angry and scares the crap out of ya’. He never wants to play any games. But you know he is always looking out for you.” Personally I will miss the smack downs he gave the media and congress. His frankness showed character and courage that most people will never achieve and was a breath of fresh air in a politically correct world.
jeffNWV on November 8, 2006 at 2:06 PM
I’ve been doing a lot of thinking since last night’s events. I’m not depressed, angry or saddened. I’m disappointed. The Dems didn’t win because they were the better party or had stronger canditates, and the Republicans didn’t lose because they were the worse party or had weak candidates. I think more than enough people were just tired of the way things were going. The Dems have 2 years to show us they can handle having power, but if they screw it up, they will hear about it in 2 years in the next major election. The Republicans screwed up and made far too many mistakes, the Dems should understand they can’t afford the same leeway that the Republicans had for so long.
As for Rumsfeld, I think it was time. I don’t like it anymore than Slublog, but I too understand why it had to happen. He would have been too much of a distraction from the necessary work at hand, and he knew he had to get out of the way. He served us well for the last few years, and I respect him for that. Now I hope Gates does as good of a job or better. Now that Rumsfeld is stepping down, the left can’t use that canard anymore. Let’s see what happens.
One thing I’ve noticed, there’s no humongous cry of defeat from the bloggers on the Right like there was from those of the Left a couple years ago. No one screaming they think America has been destroyed. No one sucking their thumbs in their pajamas for several days, or anyone whining about moving to Canada. Why is that? I think most of us on the Right are more realistic than those on the left. We think more logically about the changes in the House and Senate (and the White House for that matter), whereas those on the Left think more emotionally about those changes. Maybe I’m wrong, but does anyone else notice this?

urbancenturion on November 8, 2006 at 2:16 PM
Yeah, I just thought about it this morning during a smoke break. We deal in reality, and the reality is that we lost big time last night. Over the next few weeks and months, you’ll see plenty of bloggers taking a closer look at what really happened last night and coming up with solid ideas about where to go from here. The left never came up with ideas outside of “Bushitler” and all the rest of that garbage. Barbra Streisand singing a duet with a Bush impersonator is about as close as the kooks get to think tank style intellectual development. We are so going to murder them in the 2008 elections and beyond.
jaleach on November 8, 2006 at 2:21 PM
Well Gee…
Guess what happens WHEN YOU DON’T FIGHT THE FARKING BATTLE??
YOU LOSE!
And that is exactly what happened. The WH and Republicans allowed the democrats and traitors to run the media and lie and cheat for SIX YEARS without a peep and gave up EVERY MEDIA BATTLEFIELD WITHOUT A FIGHT.
Instead of calling the MSM on each and every lie and distortion (pointing them out and calling LIAR!) they simply bent over and took it up the rear.
And now they wonder why their ass hurts….
Its going to get a lot of people KILLED. Both in Iraq, Israel, and here in the good ole USA.
CrazyFool on November 8, 2006 at 2:24 PM
I also like how Republicans have taken responsibility quickly and don’t blame others. There is a real difference in maturity level between the two parties.
My opinion: In an age of soundbites and an overwhelmingly liberal press, we really need younger, telegenic, articulate, and intellectual people in the cabinet and in Congress. Snow was a good choice.
I wish Bush had chosen Victor Davis Hanson as Secretary of Defense, anyone who can articulate the purpose of the War on Terror.
I wonder if the new mood because the MSM is so ecstatic will backfire on them and Bush will get the credit. If they keep spinning the state of the affairs of the nation as awful even though it is good, such as the economy, Republicans can blame Congress. If they don’t, Bush will inevitably get the credit.
I think our chances look much better in 2008.
januarius on November 8, 2006 at 2:25 PM
DakRoland: It’s true.
The Game gets more interesting, I think. We’ll win the War, I beleive, even if we lose a few battles along the way. If the democrat congress creates an impetus for Japan to arm itself, then I would count that as a victory.
Remember that the whole world does not revolve around several hundred half-senile capitol hill cronies. No matter what the MSM says, its not so. We don’t have a king and never will. We’ll just roll along the same as we ever have.
And I have three words…
Target… Rich… Environment.
Now is the time for Bush to get in a good replacement to his SecDef. Rummy was awesome but was used against us too much. He is nothing if not a wise and cunning man. Bush is also cunning, even if he is inarticulate. Keep a watch on this stuff folks, its bound to get more interesting now that someone stirred up the pot!
