Dems poised to take Senate; Update: Webb declares victory
posted at 1:04 am on November 8, 2006 by Allahpundit
Conrad Burns is getting hammered early in Montana. Webb is either up by a few thousand votes or down by a few thousand votes, depending upon whom you believe, with 99+% reporting. Fox has just called it for Corker in Tennessee, so assuming those other two break blue, it’s a 50-49 Democratic Senate.
…With Mizzou left to decide who controls. As of 12:30 on the east coast, Talent leads 50-47 with 69% in.
But Mary K is IMing me to say that she’s heard from local GOP that McCaskill will pull it out. Remaining precincts are urban and Talent doesn’t have a big enough lead to hold off that surge.
51-49, Dems. Which means this man is now king of the Senate:
Oh, and South Dakota shot down the referendum that would have banned abortion in the state.
Barnett’s conceded, and yet I take no comfort in the triumph of my pessimism.
There’s only one thing that can comfort me now: KP looking hotter than the sun.
Update: And sure enough, McCaskill now leads with 81% in. Passage of the stem-cell initiative is now 50-50 too after having been (slightly) disfavored all night.
Update: Talent is conceding right now on Fox.
Update: Webb says he won. CNN puts him fully 12,000 votes ahead now but that depends on how the absentee ballots shake out.
It’s up to Burns now. He’s within three points, but 70% of the precincts have reported.

Folks, Reagan got things done while the Democrats had a 100+ seat majority in the House. Agreed, Bush is no Reagan, but you just cannot get too depressed over this. The country has faced worse, and it will get through this.
Silver lining? Identify the RINOs who didn’t get run off tonight, and work to run them off in ’08. Make them legislate and govern as real conservatives, and remind them daily that we’re watching.
Politicians respond to pressure. They consider one phone call representative of hundreds more opinions. Make them fear ignoring their base.

Bill C on November 8, 2006 at 1:51 AM
Freelancer, I’m very sorry to say but you have to understand the reality of the situation.
If the Democrats control BOTH houses that the only party that will be doing the “governing” will be the DEMOCRATS. The committee chairs will ALL BE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS. The agenda will be that of LIBERALS.
LIBERALS, led (presumably) by Reid, with senior members such as Kennedy, Byrd, Biden, Leahy, Levin, Rockerfeller, will run the committees that will decide military, foreign, and domestic policy, start investigations of Bush and the Republicans, and approve judges.
Conservative bills will be tabled. And Liberal bills will be advanced.
Here’s an obvious one (one that I GUARANTEE the CHARLES SCHUMER WILL INTRODUCE on JANUARY 6, 2007):
Gun control WILL AGAIN BE ON THE TABLE, and this time there will be no “sunset” provision on a phony AW Ban. This time there will be a REAL “assault weapon ban” and this time it will be CONFISCATION OF ALL SEMI-AUTOS (it’s just so difficult to define what an “assault weapon” is, so let’s just ban them all, as per Diane Feinstein), lifetime limits on the number of guns a person may own (forget about 1 gun a month, more like 1 gun a year or decade or lifetime), Federal licenses to purchase guns, limits on the amount and type of ammunition that can be purchased (as in nothing more powerful than .22 solids).
And hang on to you hat on this one — A FEDERAL LAW THAT OVERRIDES ALL STATE CCW LAWS — and prohibits CCW nationwide!
That is what a LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC SENATE and HOUSE will do on this issue alone! Sarah Brady is creaming in her underwear right now, because she knows that with her inoperable lung cancer, now she can die happy!
Oh, and while I’m warming to the subject, you can kiss Rush Limbaugh GOOD BYE. Kiss Sean Hannity GOOD BYE. Kiss Laura Ingrahm, Tammy Bruce, etc., GOOD BYE. Not that I’d mind kissing Laura, Tammy, and etc. — it just that I DO NOT want to kiss them GOOD BYE!
And kiss our host’s blog good bye, because the nutroots have already demanded re-imposition of the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE that will muzzle OUR talk radio voices. As the left doesn’t have one (Air(head) America is already in the graveyard), there will NOT BE A PLACE on the public’s radio spectrum for “right wingnut” radio. Period!
And given how much support BLOGS have given to politicians, especially rightwing blogs, watch “campaign finance reform” shut down all political blogs. They left won’t mind this either — they’ll still have the MAINSTREAM MEDIA to push the liberal agenda. But we will be silenced….
So, unless Michelle, Allahpundit, Byran, and Ian, have wonderful chocolate cookie recipes to share, OUR voices are going to be stifled. Because that’s all that the “new world order” is going to allow as everything else “political” WILL BE CONSIDERED UNDER CONTROL of McCain/Feingold II.
Don’t think this will happen? Think that Bush will veto them?
Guess again.
1. Bush MAY NOT be there — Conyers has already promised that the first order of business will be an impeachment resolution, despite what Pelosi says. While I do not think there will be enough votes to CONVICT and remove BUSH in the Senate, even one such attempt will turn his presidency into a dead (not even lame) duck in milliseconds.
2. Ah, but you say if they succeed, there will be President Cheney — providing that they don’t impeach and remove him FIRST. Hmm..
3. So guess who the new POTUS is? Can you spell P-E-L-O-S-I? I knew you could!
Okay, let’s assume that I am right and Bush doesn’t get kicked out.
There are “must pass bills” that WILL have these odious provisions embedded in them. Bush will almost certainly have to sign them or all government operations stop — ESPECIALLY the GLOBAL war on terrorism. And as far as “deadly assault weapons” are concerned, he’s already agreed to sign one if it reached his desk.
So, Freelancer, there is no silver lining. And given the fact that we are at war with an enemy that intends to destroy us — an enemy that the DEMOCRATS REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR EXISTANCE — these aren’t like other times.
Especially if Iran or North Korea gives a nuke to Al Qaeda and they detonate it in any one of our cities….
I am afraid, very afraid, for our country if AP’s ‘prediction’ that we lose the Senate as well comes true.
georgej on November 8, 2006 at 1:53 AM
Get ready for impeachment v2.0, all I’m sayin’.

Stand strong, my friends. We ARE NOT dead and buried. Far from it. The dems will implode soon. Count on it.
You see, they made a big, big mistake years ago. They never expunged their extremist fringe from the party. The Republicans, however, kicked the racists and Birchers out back in the ’60s, got their stuff together, and started winning elections.
Having extremists in the party is a big problem. They do things like the Lamont/Lieberman imbroglio. They nominate weirdos like McGovern for president. They act as a drag on the mainstream elements of the party, and when they don’t get their way they cause all sorts of problems. Mark my words, the democrats are doomed in the long run if they don’t get rid of the Koskids and other assorted fruitcakes. I guarantee their are elements of the mainstream democrat party trying to figure out how to get rid of the nutroots because of this very fact. In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for the civil war about to erupt in the democrat party. It’s coming, folks.
jaleach on November 8, 2006 at 2:07 AM
Noteworthy in MO is that there is a Libertarian candidate with 2% of the vote… more than enough to make up the difference between Talent and McCaskill.
I think that really speaks to the whole issue of this being a Republican loss more than a Democratic win. Despite everything Pelosi is saying about this meaning that voters want a new direction (by that she means a Democratic party direction), the results aren’t really showing that to be the case. I think this is more of an issue of Republicans staying home or voting 3rd party than an issue of Republican-leaners crossing the isle to vote for Democrats.

The MSM? They just won. They will continue to win. They won out on campaign finance reform. And don’t give me the FoxNews BS. Rupert Murdock is Gail Wynand incarnate. He doesn’t give two shits about America, Iraq or his own grandmother. He’d sell his children for ratings points.
The DNC? They have KP, and by proxy AP. I’m speaking allegorically, of course.
The Islamofascists? With what? Axis of Evil speeches and canvasing efforts a la Karl Rove? Fat lot of good that got us. They won. They would have won in 2004 if the DNC had fronted a candidate that wasn’t a bigger idiot than Bubbaya Bush.
Karl Rove was dead fucking wrong. Or he was flat-out lying to save his own skin in the short run. Right now I have no hope for this country or the culture upon which it was built.

I’ve been watching Fox. Even KP seems a little surprised at the Senate victory for the Dems (I hope Steele wins in absentee ballots, but can’t bank on it). She and the other Fox talkers are just guessing as to what’s next.
We know the Dems had a plan for their House victory: get Bush!
Now that they face, not “balance,” but actual responsibility — they have no plan.
Pathetic.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all military families tonight. They will bear the burden of the next two years.
Anton on November 8, 2006 at 2:34 AM
Hey SPMAT, if you thought this was about “Western Civ,” you forgot to notice that Europe is already dead. Even the churches are on welfare over there (mandatory tax support for parishes that nobody attends anymore). For myself, I was just hoping to save what’s left of the conservative agenda in Washington — and hopefully keep some spine in the Bush doctrine.
The conservative agenda is dead for the next two years. We’ll have to see about the military aspect of the Bush doctrine. The soon-to-air footage of Iranians, Syrians, and Palestinians giddy over a Democrat victory may not sit too well with our new committee chairmen. Or so I can hope…
Anton on November 8, 2006 at 2:42 AM
Well called, Allahpundit.
Christoph on November 8, 2006 at 2:54 AM
No, ANTON, the Bush Doctrine is dead. Your comment about “Western Civ” is especially comical in that the dominant source for it, Mark Stein, predicted that Republicans would hold both houses. Yes, Europe is dead and rotting. So what? America was supposed to be the last bulwark of western civilization. Well, it’s just proven itself more than willing to sacrifice it’s own heritage for “change,” whatever the hell that means. It did it in 1992. Hell, it did it in 1994. It’s doing it again.
At this point, I’m just waiting till the dirty bombs start going off and Minnesota’s newest ambassador for the coming caliphate upbraids us for our intolerance.
What’s left of the conservative agenda is to quietly, compassionately wait until our oxygen gets cut off by those with more political will and smokin’ hot good looks deconstruct us, precinct by precinct.
spmat on November 8, 2006 at 3:00 AM
spmat…good points.
A few more:
Forget Iraq, it is done…over…gone. The Dems don’t want to fight Al Queda over there, they would rather fight them on our own soil so they can make political hay from our deaths.Any retard can see that Iraq is drawing the extremists there to be killed by our military, the Iraqi military cannot handle them and in many cases are in cahoots with them…..with us gone(which will certainly be the reality since the dems will defund the Iraq effort so they can give that money to people who choose not to work)Iraq will be the center of the next Islamic republic and an expansion of Iran’s power.
Your taxes will be going up if you make any more money than minimum wage.
The gun-grabbers will be coming out of the woodwork again…..time to put slobbering Jim Brady back in the wheelchair(even tho he is perfectly capable of walking)and roll him into congress to plead for more “sensible-common sense gun laws). Buy that new rifle you have been wanting and lots of ammo.
“Moderate” Republicans….aka RINOS must be purged from the party, they are ruining the party with their waffling and appeasing ways.
Prepare for at least 2 years of “special investigations” and such of Bush/Cheney……the Dems have all the fight in them against the Executive branch that they don’t have against terrorism….should make for good talk radio.

Before the election, Pelosi spoke about some of the things she intends to have accomplished. She did NOT inlcude all of her wish list for fear of a backlash.
What I listed are some of those hidden agenda items. They are logical and obvious to me.
As for Democrat infighting? The reason Pelosi created a 100 day (or was it a 100 HOUR?) legislative plan was to OVERCOME any “moderate” or “conservative” Democrat opposition. Party disclipline is at its highest in the weeks immediately after a new Congress is sworn in. The “mavericks” don’t have time to set up alliances and fight the speaker.
Pelosi’s intent is to
1. Give no time for the voters back home to call their representatives and object, giving the members (especially the Democrats) a reason to object.
2. Strike while the opposition (ideological and/or party) is unorganized and incapable of resistance.
3. Strike immediately after she is elected by the party members WHILE THEIR NATURAL ALLEGIENCE is still strong.
So, yes. Holy crap indeed.
America is going to be under the effective control of a party that DOES NOT EVEN RECOGNIZE that America is at war. They are going to go after Bush for spite and because they hate him. They are going to push their agenda through and then spend the next 1 year and 260 days going after George W. Bush and the Republican party to (a) drive him from office, if possible, (b) DESTROY his legacy — they remember how Reagan is fondly remembered and they have no intention of allowing that for Bush, and (c) set up for 2008 by giving the voters *2* YEARS of “BAD BUSH/BAD REPUBLICANS” and “REPUBLICANS LIED/INNOCENT IRAQI TERRORISTS DIED!!” messages.
The Democrats and the media are going to do EVERYTHING in their power to insure Democratic control of all 3 branches of government for the rest of the 21st Century and beyond.
They intend to reduce the Republican Party to having the effectiveness of the Whig Party, today — in other words, they intend to destroy their opposition, forever!
That’s us, in case you were wondering.

Doom doom doom.
Some of you seriously need to suck it up. Life’s hard; buy a helmet.
Sounding *exactly* like Democrats isn’t helping anyone. Well, it’s helping liberals: I’m sure they’re enjoying your wailing and teeth gnashing.
Personally, I woke up in a fine mood. Things could be far, far worse. As in, President Hillary worse. As in Senator Lamont worse.
We’ve still got the White House (and I’m pretty sure some of you voted for that guy); we’ll keep the Senate by a thin margin, or at the very worst it’ll be 49-49 with Joementum in the middle and Cheney breaking ties.
And so many of the new Democrats are, in fact, New Democrats; they are (if you can take them at their word) not exactly Sheehan/Pelosi liberals.
The world moves on. The Democrats had to win, sooner or later – and history said it would be this time around. History wins.
The most significant loser last night wasn’t Americans at all; it was Iraqis. In the next two years, I’d bet that Congress makes life pretty hard on them. Or maybe not. We’ll see.
But I’m still optimistic about just about everything. We all knew this was going to happen. I’ve said for a couple years that we needed liberals in power for a little while to remind the country who and what they are.
This may turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to conservatism – and to the country as a whole. Sure, as I’ve noted elsewhere, my optimism assumes a Democrat-controlled government doesn’t get us all killed. And I’d be lying if I said that I’m confident in their foriegn policy abilities. But we’ve survived much, much – *much* – worse. We’ll survive this, I think.
Anyone who thinks the Democrats will hold the house for 40 years again is simply wrong. Not gonna happen. Na ga happa.
And happily, they’ll now share some of the blame every time something is less than perfect in the world.
Suck it up, people. Put the helmet on. Get back in the game. Even if all you gloomers-and-doomers are absolutely right, your reaction is absolutely wrong. Playing Democrat for a day and shrieking about it on the Internet isn’t going to help anyone or anything.
Get up. Continue to march. That’s why we’re not them, remember? Country before party? Principle before partisanship? Sound familiar? We owe it to our men and women in uniform to keep marching – because they sure are.
See you in ’08.
Professor Blather on November 8, 2006 at 8:34 AM
I agree with what Nancy Pelosi said. Really I do. She said that the American people voted for change and a new direction for America. That direction: down. We have to begin looking for an ’08 Presidential candidate and get us back into Congress. No time to waste. Let’s bite the bullet and start kicking some a$$.
When people see the Dems will do nothing for them, they’ll hate them in 6 months and “Demand Change in Washington”. We’ll be back in ’08. Just means we’ll need to try harder to pass/stop legislation. The only thing that bothers me, is the ACLU and CAIR policies and the immigration legislation. But we can fight it.

It was the Australians, get it right!
georgej,
The United States remains the finest republic in the history of the world. I am as aware as anyone of the socialist agenda, but I am also aware that right now the stage is set for a lot of nothing to get done in the next two years.
After perusing the state-by-state ballot initiatives, I really don’t see the American people being ready to hand over their guns. At the same time that people voted out a pack of RINOs (a more accurate expression than voting in liberals), they rejected homosexual marriage by an even larger margin, in EVERY SINGLE state that raised the issue. Had guns been an issue, the numbers would have been even clearer.
The conservative base was played for dupes for much of the last six years, and the Republican party was made to pay for it. Sure, there will be consequences, but I promise you, not as dire as you suggest.
Tell you what. On 21 January, 2009, the day after the next President is sworn into office, I’ll post photos of my guns next to that day’s local newspaper, and dare the Democrats to legally confiscate them. You’re welcome to remind me in case you think I’ll forget. I am quite certain I have nothing to fear.
The Democrats are going to try and craft a mandate from last night’s results, but they will learn that the mandate wasn’t in favor of socialism, rather against false conservatism.

They ain’t gonna learn jack shit. They’ve never learned before.

They have the media. They can fucking make a mandate if they want to.

Review:
Mikeomatic: thanks for the only laughs I got yesterday or this morning.
Metro: I think AP focuses on the single and lovely KP mostly because The Boss is a) married and b) she’s the boss. The inescapable fact that she is blindingly beautiful doesn’t change either of the first two facts.
Professor: Word.
Mikeyboss: No! And it’s not over now!

Well written Professor Blather. I can’t avoid feeling frustrated, and a little scared. I also have to morn a bit for some seemingly good people who were voted out. I am especially frustrated about my states amendment 2, stem cell research vote. Despite all that went wrong it does no good, and probably does harm, to cry and gnash my teeth. We need to be patient, and look for opportunities to turn this defeat to our favor in the long run!

mikeomatic,
Your arguments are not enhanced by your profanity. Using foul language as exclamation points neither endears you, nor increases the value of what you say.
While it’s true that the liberals will be convinced that this is a victory for their ideology, instead of being a statement against squishy conservative compromise, getting their agenda accomplished is much easier said than done.
“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 10:28
This is temporary, some things are eternal. Keep perspective.

At the same time that people voted out a pack of RINOs (a more accurate expression than voting in liberals),
Plenty of non-RINOs ate it, too. It is hard to view this election as the purging of the non-conservative Republicans.

Eternal? You’re referring to God, aren’t you.
After all the people who were undoubtedly praying for what happened yesterday not to happen, I can only conclude that God either wasn’t listening or wasn’t really committed to providing any help. All he really did was keep things from getting even worse.

I posted this on the other “Dem Victory” thread this morning. It bears repeating:
One other thing. As of this morning, let’s dispense with any comments about KP being hot. I can’t look at her without seeing the leering face of Speaker Pelosi hovering over her shoulder like some dark online avatar. Not. Hot.
Kind of like I can’t look at Scarlett Johanson without seeing the ghostly presence of Woody Allen, whom she has praised repeatedly. So not hot.
New man-rule: KP is not hot! Democrats are not hot!
Got it, Allah?

I just hope we have the balls to tie EVERYTHING up. I’d rather see everything tied up and arguing than the Left getting one more inch of ground. They pass a bill, we need to veto it.
What sucks is the House is going to investigate everything, including if the White House lawn was watered enough.
Also, I guess we can kiss good-bye the Supreme Court. I have a hard time believing we haven’t just been set back 25 years.

People,
Most of these NEWLY elected libs ran as conservatives.
Now that they won. They’re going to piss off all those
who voted for them as they start to govern as LIBS.
Texyank on November 8, 2006 at 3:00 PM
Maybe this will sound a bit radical, but perhaps the Republicans should offer Senator Lieberman the position of majority Leader in the Senate, if he sits with them.

I think KP “infiltrated” and now she’s got the hook in your jaw. Call her Mata Hari.

mikeomatic,
Not going to let the thread get hijacked for off-topic thoughts, but anyone who believes in God can’t suppose that He ever “doesn’t listen”. Prayers can be answered three ways: Yes, No, and Wait. Maybe those prayers were answered No, maybe they were answered Wait. We can’t see through His eyes, so no way for any of us to say.
My point was that everything that happens on this earth is temporal, and has relatively insignificant impact on the eternal. A favorite song of mine is “Until Then”:
My heart can sing when I pause to remember,
A heartache here is but a stepping stone;
Along a trail that’s winding always upward,
This troubled world is not my final home.
But until then my heart will go on singing,
Until then with joy I’ll carry on;
Until the day my eyes behold that City,
Until the day God calls me home.
With that mindset, I can’t get too worked up over unpleasant things that happen. We survived Carter, we survived Clinton, we survived Daschle, we’ll survive Pelosi/Reid.
