Big on the prayer part…

Bob's Kid on November 7, 2006 at 10:17 AM

Is it raining where y’all are? I’m doing my dance and casting my bones, but nothing here in Northen Virginia yet.

seejanemom on November 7, 2006 at 10:23 AM

Not supposed to rain here ’til late today, too late to depress the blue vote. :)

Bob's Kid on November 7, 2006 at 10:35 AM

I’m praying, praying, praying !!!!

Voted (first in a long, long, long line) this morning in rainy Tampa, FL.

God help us – there’s so much at stake.

stenwin77 on November 7, 2006 at 10:39 AM

I voted this morning in Alexandria Virginia, line was short and quick. Machines were easy to use. Dems will whine about machines if (hopefully when) Webb loses.

Jonesy on November 7, 2006 at 10:46 AM

I voted in MD (go Steele!). No problems at the poll, and I only had to wait about 15 minutes or so. We used Diebold machines, same ones we used on 2004. Other than the lack of paper trail (which is a big lack) they seemed to work fine.

Bryan on November 7, 2006 at 10:48 AM

Heard on Brian & the Judge that there was a problem in one PA county, where if you attempted to vote straight Republican, it was counted as Dem.

E L Frederick on November 7, 2006 at 10:51 AM

Paper here in Alabama… no problems.

E L Frederick on November 7, 2006 at 10:52 AM

I voted around 9:45 a.m. in a medium-sized town in VA — expected a wait but no lines at all, in and out in 2 minutes (it’s partly sunny and mild here). Maybe I just got there at a good time? Maybe the undecideds are in fact planning to just stay home? Hopefully Republicans are not.

Fingers crossed that Sen. George Allen hangs on. I don’t care so much about his recent foot in mouth disease, it’s his conservative voting record that is important to me.

eucher on November 7, 2006 at 10:55 AM

Did anyone see Elliot Spitzer (D-NY)on Fox and Friends this morning? Nice video of him going into the voting booth with what appeared to be his wife and daughter. Nice family footage, right? Unfortunately for New York’s current Democrat Attorney General and probable next Governor, he apparently violated New York election law in the process:

New York
New York law prohibits voting booths from being occupied by more than one person. It also prohibits voters from memorializing anything that occurs within the booth and prohibits voters from showing or asking others to show them the contents of a marked ballot. Under these laws, no photography or video recording can occur within the voting booth. Outside of the voting booth but within the polling place, what activities are allowed will vary from county to county. In some counties, the media is allowed access in order to film, photograph, or conduct exit polls. For this media access, you must fax in a letter of interest with your contact info to get an exit letter, which will give access to a polling site to non-voters. Check with your county to find out what qualifies you as media and what non-media are allowed to do within a polling place.

Source is The Center for Citizen Media ( citmedia.org )

I’ll try to look up chapter and verse on the actual statute for you. Not really a big deal in my view, but one would expect the Attorney General of New York to have a passing familiarity with New York election laws.

secarr on November 7, 2006 at 10:56 AM

heh, That pretty funny about Elliot.

bloggless on November 7, 2006 at 11:02 AM

I have a question. Are there always propositions to vote on during these elections, and if so, how do you find out what those are? I went to the website for my county and couldn’t find anything. I’m sorry if this is a stupid question, but I don’t want to go to the polls today uneducated.

Esthier on November 7, 2006 at 11:09 AM

ok, the IM thingy is really fun. addictive, too. gotta go do my civic duty.

pullingmyhairout on November 7, 2006 at 11:10 AM

In Ohio…polling places have changed for some…just call your local board of elections…give them your social and they’ll direct you to the correct place…Columbus Ohio has an automated system…

areseaoh on November 7, 2006 at 11:11 AM

Michigan is miserable out – cold and constant rain. Turnout is defenitely lower than 2004.

Clark1 on November 7, 2006 at 11:12 AM

Voted in Fort Worth,TX this morning, hour long line. Nothing much at stake here in TX except to see how many Kinky people are living here in the state. It’s a Perry win but with what he should see an an insulting percentage…he needs to do better.

I’ll be voting in Collin County (not far from Dallas). I guess I should expect the same lines.

But so are you saying we’re not voting on any issues?

Esthier on November 7, 2006 at 11:14 AM

I waited 45 minutes to vote in my Detroit district. My line, of course, was the only long one (the others had actually NO wait.) Grr. I think they’re suppressing my vote, because my ‘hood is one of the few with a couple of Republicans in it. I kid, of course, but the guy in line ahead of me actually made the charge. Don’t know that he was a rethug, though. I doubt it.

Carin on November 7, 2006 at 11:22 AM

UPDATE ON ELLIOT SPITZER:

NY Election Law section 17-130 (7), (8) make it a misdemeanor for any person who:

7. Enters a voting booth with any voter or remains in a voting booth while it is occupied by any voter, or opens the door of a voting booth when the same is occupied by a voter, with the intent to watch such a voter while engaged in the preparation of his ballot, except as authorized by this chapter; or,

8. Being or claiming to be a voter, permits any other person to be in a voting booth with him while engaged in the preparation of his ballot, except as authorized by this chapter, without openly protesting against and asking that such person be ejected; or,

Recognized exceptions are generally for those who require some type of legitimate assistance in operation of the voting machine (some type of recognized disability). I can find no authorization for taking your family with you for photo-op purposes.

Cheers,

-Steve Carr

E L Frederick on November 7, 2006 at 11:25 AM

4th in line this AM, small Kane Co. precinct west of Chicago.
No problems so far there according to a judge friend…
Heard some small things around the area, missing stylus pens, missing captains,(with the keys to the polling place)etc. but otherwise nothing major yet.
Mostly R, one D, and a 1% sales tax increase for new business since we have none. Business that is, taxes we got… :)

CBarker on November 7, 2006 at 11:30 AM

no lines in my precinct in Texas. It is a stunningly beautiful day.

pullingmyhairout on November 7, 2006 at 11:31 AM

Boortz is talking rumors of strongarm tactics in Philly. GOP observers not being allowed in the polls and voters being allowed to cast ballots without confirmation of registration due to white-out be spilled on the voter rolls!

Hearing anything like this anywhere else?

conservativecaveman on November 7, 2006 at 11:31 AM

I voted this morning in McKinney TX. Took me 5 minutes.
I just don’t understand how anyone can mess up on the electronic voting machines. A 4 yr old can figure it out!

My predictions for Senate:
Maryland, Missouri, Tennessee, Virginia will go to GOP.

Montana, Pennsylvania, and Ohio will go to Dems.

Rhode Island is a toss up.

GOP will keep 51 seats.

msipes on November 7, 2006 at 11:32 AM

I voted this morning in McKinney TX. Took me 5 minutes.

That’s where I’m going to vote. Weird.

Esthier on November 7, 2006 at 11:36 AM

So we’re just voting for people, no issues?

Esthier on November 7, 2006 at 11:37 AM

Voted earlier here in St. Petersburg, FL. I went straight in and the entire process took all of about 20 minutes. I casted my vote for Charlie Crist (To replace Jeb Bush) and voted for Katherine Harris for Senate even though I don’t believe that Nelson is going to be unseated. I voted no for all my stupid lil county propositions that just want to rape me for more tax dollars and voted yes on admendment 5 to tell the special interest groupies to go screw themselves. Basically I voted a straight (R) ticket. No way I could ever vote for anything with a (D) after it’s name.

Scorched_Earth on November 7, 2006 at 11:39 AM

CALL CINDY MCKINNEY! Upper middle class voters in my precinct in Alexandria were disenfranchised by the 10 minute wait to vote, and a lack of any starbucks within 5 miles of the polling place. Plus, I didn’t get my flu shot, free prius or any of the other things I was promised.

E5infantry on November 7, 2006 at 11:43 AM

Voted in Alexandria, VA. Short lines, in and out in under 15 minutes. My wife, who normally cancels out my vote, is sitting this one out. I am hoping for Allen to eke out a win.

Defense Guy on November 7, 2006 at 11:59 AM

Voted (my first time!) this morning here in Colonie, NY. No line to deal with. We have the Direct-Recording (AKA tons o’ levers and switches) machines. They’re simple enough to use and I had no problems.

Olbgasm on November 7, 2006 at 12:01 PM

I’m betting Bush/Cheney beat Kerry/Edwards by 2% and we keep the House and Senate, easily. And Bush will clinch the popular vote this time.

Halley on November 7, 2006 at 12:02 PM

I am from NY. This is a hard day for me. A certain senator will most likely still be my senator. My “Republican” governor – a NY city politician – is retiring and I’m most likely going to get a two bit attorney general (D) – another NY city politician – to fill his shoes. (I’m not from NYC)

I have found a silver lining. Today is the last day of the annoying campaign ads that tell me the people I voted for are going to cause this country to self destruct the day after the elections.

- And no problems at my polling place. In and out in 10 minutes.

looking4statesmen on November 7, 2006 at 12:09 PM

Taking my lunch break from driving lil’ol ladies and gents to the polls here in Texas.

Polls this morning empty. Afterwork probably heavier. 35% voter turnout expected.

It is taking longer to get the folks out of the van and to the front door then it is for them to vote.

The optical scanners here are great. Easy Easy Easy to mark your ballot and vote. All precincts should have this system.

Gotta run. Eat. And drive some more.

Republican!

Good job Baby!

Tony737 on November 7, 2006 at 12:26 PM

Voted at 6:00AM in Chicago…optical scanner was broken, kept rejecting the ballots for me and the other 5 early birds. Election judges deposited them in the big lockbox “we’ll count these by hand later” … if Republican loses County Board by 5 votes, I’m going Diebold on their asses. I think I know how some of those voters in FL / OH felt…

carlitos on November 7, 2006 at 12:37 PM

Just from the “Mega-Dittos” comment that someone made in the live voice chat last night… if Rush has “ditto-heads” does that make those of us who post here “air-heads”?

Inquiring minds want to know…

E L Frederick on November 7, 2006 at 12:40 PM

does that make those of us who post here “air-heads”?

E L, Ko’s and the MSM would call us “HotHeads”.

Actually, has a nice ring to it.

BacaDog on November 7, 2006 at 12:45 PM

So we’re just voting for people, no issues?

Yes Esthier.. Collin County only has people and no amendments or referendums on the ballot.

Should take you 5 mins to sweep down the conservative side.
However, I did vote for James Werner (Libertarian). I am sick of Rick Perry’s crap on border security. We need to reform our immigration system here in Texas. There are to many illegals. As I was walking out of the local Race Track… I found myself wondering if all these Mexicans in the store coming in and out can even vote!

Our border control is pathetic. And Rick Perry is responsible for that.

msipes on November 7, 2006 at 12:45 PM

I guess I am just beginning to realize the stakes here.

If the democrats win

This means that the Tax cut given to us will be gone
This means that the Patriot act will not be renewed
This means that the Wiretap program will be stopped.
This means that Military tribunials for Gitmo Detainees will not happen
This means that US service personel will be more and more the subject of congressional persecution
This means that the Military budget will be cut
This means that the Bush Administration instead of fighting the war on terror will be locked in battle for two years with congress instead.
This means that KOS and Huffington and Micheal Moore will have access to the seats of power to carry on their agenda.
This means people like Sheehan and Jessie Jacksopn and Jimmy carter will be paraded around washington as heroes.

I was willing to accept a loss as I have been in politics for a long time but this will be a very bitter one if it happens. After 911 the thought that someone like John Murtha will be overseeing our military disguss me to no end

William Amos on November 7, 2006 at 12:51 PM

Thanks, msipes. Last time I voted I was caught off guard about some issue I hadn’t heard much about.

I agree with you about Rick Perry, but at the risk of getting Kinky as governor, I’ll probably just vote straight ticket.

Esthier on November 7, 2006 at 12:57 PM

More Spitzer:

Anyone know how to get that video footage of Spitzer from Fox? It would make a fun You Tube production with the statute printed at the bottom of the screen.

secarr on November 7, 2006 at 12:59 PM

I just voted in TX-22. Shelley Sekula Gibbs had a rep in the parking lot (like every precinct in which she’s on the ballot) handing out a card showing her name spelled correctly and explaining how to “vote twice,” as was required for (i) the special election to serve out Delay’s term, and (ii) the midterm election for next term.

I confirmed the card’s instructions with the poll monitors inside (one Dem, one GOPer for each consultation, of course), and it was easy as could be. Saw lots of Gibbs voters (as evidenced by their discussions with the campaign rep), but only a few Lampson folks who didn’t want the Gibbs info. Ratio was around 15:5 Gibbs:Lampson from what I could tell.

Thought ya’ll might want to know.

Blacksheep on November 7, 2006 at 1:14 PM

Latest word in PA is that many counties are experiencing multiple voting machine problems; so much so that they have decided to keep the polls open until 9:00 PM. The wait to vote is long as are the lines. I’m cutting out of work early to beat the 5:00 rush. I’m arming myself with plenty of Sudoku to keep myself busy. I HATE to wait for anything (after all…. I am the ‘diva’!!) but this election is just TOO critical to miss. Vote and Pray, folks.

dbdiva on November 7, 2006 at 1:22 PM

Esthier, msipes:

I’m in Irving, and I was irritated to find that we didn’t have the vaunted electronic voting machines. Damnit, bring on the technology!

It’s ridiculous that we are still using paper. And the idea that electronic voting machines are inherently corrupt while paper ballots are infallible is patently preposterous.

urbancenturion on November 7, 2006 at 1:23 PM

I’m sure you’re right. I’d rather have a mix of the two.

Esthier on November 7, 2006 at 1:24 PM

Did the early voting dance here in San Antonio 2 weeks ago, but it was busy then. About a 20 minute wait.

All these voting problems . . . Hmmmm. Lets require a paper ballot and a photo ID.

OH NOOOOOOOO! That will disenfranchise the democrats’ core constituencies of criminals and idiots.

Labamigo on November 7, 2006 at 1:30 PM

Another North Texas, Collin County voter, in Plano, TX.

Voted | (that’s a straight R, a straight D vote would look like L, because libs are crooked.)

Diebold Machine, no paper. Voting station practically empty (but went around 10:30) poll workers said it has been pretty steady.

jstueve on November 7, 2006 at 1:31 PM

I’m amazed at how many Texans there are on this site, specifically Collin County Texans. We should have a Hot Air party.

Esthier on November 7, 2006 at 1:38 PM

The lady standing in front of me waiting to check in was already complaining of disenfranchisement, while she was being handed her smart card. I have no idea what her complaint could have been, but I followed every step that she made, up until we went to seperate machines, and I saw nothing that kept her from voting.

I took my 15 year old son, so he could see how painless the whole process is. I wanted him to see what the dems would be complaining about tomorrow if they lose. When I was done, he looked at me and said, “That’s it?”. It was very easy; we walked to the school, stood behind two people to sign in (including the “disenfranchised” white trash who stood in front of me), then behind two people to wait for an open machine (including white-trash-lady). It took longer for me to cast my ballot, than it took to sign in and wait for an open machine.

My son is witness to the ease with which we are able to exercise our constitutional right. He will be eligible to vote when Senator Steele is up for re-election. He will be be mailing in his absentee ballot from Westpoint.

A mom can dream…

BlueStateBlues on November 7, 2006 at 1:41 PM

Esthier, I’m not in Collin, but be sure and send me an invite.

urbancenturion on November 7, 2006 at 1:50 PM

I just finished some GOTV calling for the Orlando Republicans. We were asked to make calls into Mark Foley’s former district to help Republican Joe Negron. The key line is “Punch Mark Foley for Joe!”

The reception from folks who answered the phone (lots of answering machines) was very positive. Their consensus was that the solution to Mark Foley’s personal problems was NOT to send a Democrat to the House. So I am somewhat optimistic that Republicans in that district will turn out to vote for Joe Negron.

Anton on November 7, 2006 at 1:51 PM

@urbancenturion:
Sorry to hear you didn’t have the tech. It is amazing that more people don’t want electronic ballots. Though some errors can occur, it is WAY less likely to be corrupted then paper ballots. How easy would it to have someone drop in a few hundred ballots into a paper system and nobody know. That is FAR easier then hacking into a voting system while people are watching! Computers don’t mess up on adding. 1+1 = 2 no matter what. The only way it would mess up is human error..and if you eliminate most of the errors… BY USING ELECTRONIC BALLOTING…. it will be FAR more accurate then a paper ballot ever would be.

@Esthier

I am amazed as well. That is why I enjoy North Texas so much. Everyone here has their head on straight.
Maybe Malkin needs to come out to Collin County and do a taping. =)

One-seat net loss in the Senate and -12 in the House for the GOP, with a massive freakout to follow. It seems though, that they’re already freaking out.

Quick Kentucky update… Went this morning before work and took my daughter with me. She was late for school because the line for our precinct was so long. It always is. (And yes, it was an “excused” tardy!) Good turnout. We use electronic — but not Diebold — machines. We have used them before, so everyone is getting used to them. DH went after his dentist appointment this morning, and still had to wait an hour, even though the pre-work rush was over. He still is not very political, but he hit the “R” button and voted “No” on eminent domain. (He’s learning!)

Apparently a poll worker choked a voter over in Louisville, but no details on that yet. I guess that would be considered “suppressing the vote” — no? Oh well!

I voted this a.m. in West Hollywood, CA. Plenty of sunshine and very warm. Not many people at all. Considering that 70% of this area considers Nancy Pelosi a right-winger, there is little excitement in the air. This year, California may actually see some Republican’s actually winning state-wide offices (Lt. Gov, Controller, Insurance Commissioner) thanks to Arnold and some really bad Dem. candidates. Even the L.A. Times endorsed a few Republicans. The Propositions on the ballot make voting in this one-party state somewhat compelling. Sigh…one day soon I will come back to America.

In some surrounding counties to Dallas they’re trying to get alcohol sales legalized…AGAIN. And there are budget appropriations that come under vote, but nothing earth-shaking.

I voted early in October. If you know how you’re going to vote, that’s the way to go. No lines, in and out in five to ten minutes.

For those in Dallas County, here’s a link that shows all the elections at all levels, along with dates and voting locations.

They even have a link to a sample ballot so you can see everything that will be on it ahead of time.

Lone Star on November 7, 2006 at 4:44 PM

Just voted and had to share this story…

I got out of work and promptly headed to the polls to vote. I live in Connecicut’s district 1, a contentious district for Lamont. As I was walking in towards the elementry school gym, I passed on my right a gaggle of canidate supporters. I keep my hair shaved high and tight and wear my utility boots still after 6 years in the navy. I saw this blur coming from the supporters and I looked over to see Ned Lamont sticking out his hand and introducing himself. Scared the crap out of me at first, I thought I was being bum rushed. I paused, stared, and then thought better of saying a few choice words. I left his out stretched hand in the air as I gave him the cold shoulder. Just a second later I passed a Lieberman Supporter who called “Vote Joe!”. I gave a quick thumbs up and heard the Leiberman supporters errupt in laughter at the sight of it. When I came out of the gym containing the polls, Lamont was long gone.

Just cast my ballot here in Ormond Beach,FL. Only 1 touch screen machine here but I don’t care. I’ve always liked the optical scanners they use here. Lines were fairly long but it may just be that the polling place last time was in a larger building.

CBarker,

I went to the same polling place close to 8am, no problems at all. I hear we had two more e-machines than Elburn (They only had two)

Voted early last week. Going in I was leaning towards Roslin, but once in the booth my gut just told me to go with Baltar. Hope it all works out well.

@BrentS

Glad to hear you didn’t vote for that nut-job Lamont. I like Joe Lieberman. I might not agree with him on all the social issues, but he is fair and not a wacko like a lot of the democratic party.
