Early winners; Update: CBS says Santorum loses; CNN says Kean loses

In the Senate: Dick Lugar, Bernie Sanders, and the Kleagle. MSNBC has also called the Ohio gubernatorial race for Ted Strickland, which is no surprise either. He’s been crushing Ken Blackwell for months.

Fox says the gay marriage ban should pass handily in Virginia, too.

Results will be coming in fast and furious starting at eight so I wanted to get this up as a placeholder. Something tasty to chew on while we wait:

TURNOUT UPDATE: FNC’s Cameron reports that MD turnout has been “dramatically high,” with reports of a high number of black Dems voting for Michael Steele out of frustration that Dems did not nominate a black candidate. Meanwhile, in VA, there are reports that turnout could be higher than in ‘04. And according to MT GOP officials, turnout has been “ridiculously high” (FNC).

Update: Michelle’s on Fox right now. Video coming. Again, the HA chat room is open for all your chatty needs.

Update: Huge GOP turnout in Montana and Virginia?

Update: CNN has all the exit polls you could ever want. I’m cutting video of MM right now but will start picking them through soon. Virginia looks to be razor thin.

Update: With 74% of the vote in, the GOP is trailing in Kentucky’s Third District — a bellwether.

Update: 20% reporting in Virginia. 49-49. But this doesn’t bode well:

latedeciders.png

Update: CNN has added a bunch of new exit polls for the 8 p.m. poll closings. Things do not look good for Michael Steele.

Update: MSNBC is calling the Massachusetts gubernatorial race for Deval Patrick.

Rendell (D) keeps his seat as Governor of Penn.

Update: The exit polls don’t look so hot for Tom Kean in New Jersey either. And Santorum’s in line for a bloodbath.

Update: CBS says it’s over for Santorum in Pennsylvania. Things are starting to look very dismal.

Update: Looks like that Survey USA poll was right. Late break for McCaskill in Missouri:

latedeciders-mo.png

Update: Good news — with 42% in, Allen has a slight lead over Webb.

Update: The gay marriage ban passed in Tennessee.

Update: CNN has called the New Jersey Senate race for Menendez.

Update (Bryan): If you follow TradeSports, Webb has tanked and Ford is fading fast. Steele and Cardin are locked up tight.

Update: Cardin has, alas, started to pull away from Steele in MD. Maryland, you chose poorly if this result holds. In VA, Allen’s lead is fluctuating but holding steady. So far.

It’s the effing GOP GOTV, baby! We got more than six calls between Sunday and yesterday evening… and we’re in EFFING SEATTLE. (Not that I expect to pick up the Senate seat here, but it would be a bonus).

TURNOUT UPDATE: FNC’s Cameron reports that MD turnout has been “dramatically high,” with reports of a high number of black Dems voting for Michael Steele out of frustration that Dems did not nominate a black candidate.

How do we reconcille this with the ealier post about Steele getting the cold shoulder from black voters and poll workers when he voted?

I guess the question will be answered in a couple of hours.

EFG on November 7, 2006 at 7:45 PM

Michelle is on FOX! And IS a fox!

Tony737 on November 7, 2006 at 7:47 PM

Hmmm…you didn’t mention Feinstein or Kennedy…hope!

see-dubya on November 7, 2006 at 7:47 PM

Pennsylvania polls will close soon, the machines here in Neshannock Township were not programed properly this morning at 7:00AM, they finally got it right by 7:30. Funny how these things happen in strong GOP areas….

Michelle is a breath of “Fresh Air” on Fox tonight! Great report.

Zorro on November 7, 2006 at 7:49 PM

How do we reconcille this with the ealier post about Steele getting the cold shoulder from black voters and poll workers when he voted?

Umm…., those were reporters, not voters?

My cousin is coming by to drink some beers… if anyone feels obliged to email me if anything big happens, it’d be much appreciated (that way my computer will make a noise and I’ll come check out whats the haps)

RightWinged on November 7, 2006 at 8:01 PM

Kennedy in Massachussets, The democrat in Florida, Snowe in MAine all declared winners. Allen is trailing now with 23% of the vote.

William Amos on November 7, 2006 at 8:04 PM

Kean is leading very early in Ne Jersey. Dewine is getting clobbered. Corker is comfortably ahead

William Amos on November 7, 2006 at 8:06 PM

BTW Webb is beating Allen by a total or 22 votes at 25%

William Amos on November 7, 2006 at 8:07 PM

Enough with the exit poll. There is an “entrance poll” being reported now.

DaveS on November 7, 2006 at 8:10 PM

Allen was down by 5,000 votes but the gap has closed to 2,500 at 31%

William Amos on November 7, 2006 at 8:14 PM

My mistake its 1,800 vote gap now

William Amos on November 7, 2006 at 8:14 PM

Agreed, lets see the finals ISO.

flyboy777 on November 7, 2006 at 8:14 PM

Woo Hoo allen retook the lead !

William Amos on November 7, 2006 at 8:15 PM

Update: Michelle’s on Fox right now.

Yup. And you look great, Michelle, as always. You picked a really great shade of red for your lips tonight. Zowie.

Lawrence on November 7, 2006 at 8:16 PM

Allen with 34% of the vote in has gained a 3,000 vote lead after trailing by 5,000 votes at one time

William Amos on November 7, 2006 at 8:16 PM

We are toast in PA by loosing Santorum, especially in the west.

flyboy777 on November 7, 2006 at 8:37 PM

guys seriously under half the votes’ counted
lets cool it on Santorum

Defector01 on November 7, 2006 at 8:41 PM

Up to the minute results in VA:

1,404 of 2,443 (57 %) Precincts Reporting
George Allen 629,330 50 %
Jim Webb, Jr. 609,220 49 %

Too close to call.

Physics Geek on November 7, 2006 at 8:42 PM

Umm…., those were reporters, not voters?

pedestrian on November 7, 2006 at 7:50 PM

No, they weren’t. Yes, reporters “reported” both those stories. But then, almost all stories come from reporters.

But the stories had dramatically different takes on what the voters had to say.

In one, black voters appeared to be enthusiastic about Steele.

In the other, black voters were not.

Hopefully, more black and white voters will vote for Steele.

marianpaul on November 7, 2006 at 8:58 PM

Whatever, troll.

EFG on November 7, 2006 at 9:09 PM

Johnson (Ct, 5) might be getting trounced by Murphy (D). This was either pro-Johnson, or a toss-up at the least. This isn’t good news.

Troll.

EFG on November 7, 2006 at 9:16 PM

CBS called for Lieberman? That would be half of my night, anyway.
I can go back to hating almost everything he votes for, now. But the Kos-man lost again.

56.9% Murphy
43.09% Johnson

Simmons (CT 2nd) not looking too bad.
That would be great. No word on Shays.

(cross post to save time)

topmaker on November 7, 2006 at 9:17 PM

Pssst.

marianpaul on November 7, 2006 at 9:19 PM

Chris Shays, slight lead, 4% in.

Doesn’t look good for Johnson.

topmaker on November 7, 2006 at 9:20 PM

Fox calls for Cardin.

yo on November 7, 2006 at 9:21 PM

The exit polls don’t look so hot for Tom Kean in New Jersey either

What Senator Bob Menendez is saying behind your back (illegal immigration, ethnic solidarity) Great, we in NJ will have a senator more interested in his ethnicity than in his state. Someone who would rather represent his “Latino brothers and sisters” than New Jerseyans. If Kean had said something like “my white brothers and sisters, we can influence this election” it would be all over the MSM, and he’d be attacked by everyone who supports (or doesn’t have a problem with) Menendez’s comments.

Megan on November 7, 2006 at 9:21 PM

The most satisfying result of the night is Ken Blackwell losing for governor in Ohio. I understand Ohioans also passed a proposition that mandates all the ballots Blackwell invalidated in 2004 be rammed up his ass.

Constantine on November 7, 2006 at 9:23 PM

Sure thing marianpaul. Sure. I went over and checked out your blog. Super. You think that gives you a free pass to drop sh*t like this?

I hate this country. We deserve what we get even an attack.

marianpaul on November 7, 2006 at 8:58 PM

You drop something like that on this blog? Why don’t you go hang out with the KKKOS heads or DU? That sort of sentiment would probably get you plenty of kudos from them.

But maybe I’m missing something.

I hate this country. We deserve what we get even an attack.

Maybe I’m missing the nuance here. The layers. My God, I’m sure there is all sorts of irony, or somesort of metaphore here. Yeah, thats it. I guess it is sort of KOS style “screw ‘em” statement. Well kudos to you.

Me? I just saw someone drop a big steaming dump on the floor. You? I guess you could be a performance artist in San Francisco or Massachusits. Yeah… I guess that was your little performance art.

I call it crap.

EFG on November 7, 2006 at 9:26 PM

Fox calls for Cardin.

yo on November 7, 2006 at 9:21 PM

Can someone explain how they (anyone) can call a race for somebody when only 1% of the precincts have reported and said somebody (Cardin in this case) is trailing in the vote count?

I’m not saying he won’t still win (and face it, MD is pretty blue), but calling it based only on that data would set of my skeptic-o-meter.

thirteen28 on November 7, 2006 at 9:28 PM

Can someone explain how they (anyone) can call a race for somebody when only 1% of the precincts have reported and said somebody (Cardin in this case) is trailing in the vote count?

Yeah, this bugs me too. The numbers posted on CNN and Fox both show Steele ahead but they’re calling it for Cardin. You’d think that after all the problems with exit polling the past three major elections they’d have learned to be a bit more careful. Really very annoying.

jasnell on November 7, 2006 at 9:46 PM

God, I want to be wrong. I don’t want to hate my country or my fellow citizens as much as they deserve it right now. I really want to be wrong.

marianpaul on November 7, 2006 at 9:50 PM

Have you never screamed something in anger or frustration without really meaning it. Everyone at one time or another has said in the heat of emotion that they hate something when they really don’t, in their heart of hearts, mean it.

marianpaul on November 7, 2006 at 9:55 PM

English is now the official language of Arizona!
Que?

CanaryinaCoalMine on November 7, 2006 at 9:59 PM

Yes, marianpaul, I have.

But it’s still wrong none the less. When I did it, and when you did it.

Don’t pull a Kerry style explanation here.

If you think I’m being hard on you, well, I am. Cuz what you said deserves it.

We may get an attack. But we don’t deserve it.

EFG on November 7, 2006 at 10:04 PM

Has Santorum conceded? How about a Romney/Santorum ticket?

marianpaul on November 7, 2006 at 10:15 PM

Santorum just conceded.

CanaryinaCoalMine on November 7, 2006 at 10:17 PM

Lamont just conceded, but I have a question…with only 21% of the results reported, he’s down by about 7 points. Huh? Why concede so early? And what happens if the 79% remaining boost Lamont over Liebs. What happens then?

American_Jihadist on November 7, 2006 at 10:21 PM

Santorum just conceded.

CanaryinaCoalMine on November 7, 2006 at 10:17 PM

That seriously is a huge disapointment. I liked Santorum. He had serious guts.

EFG on November 7, 2006 at 10:23 PM

Oops. Hit the button before I finished. Stuff like this is why I’ve always been taught, “Never give up!” If there is any possibility of a win (especially with the majority of results not yet in), there is zero reason to concede, no?

Not that I’m unhappy about Lamont quitting, but what’s the point of doing so when there is any shred of hope remaining?

American_Jihadist on November 7, 2006 at 10:23 PM

Lamont just conceded, but I have a question…with only 21% of the results reported, he’s down by about 7 points. Huh? Why concede so early? And what happens if the 79% remaining boost Lamont over Liebs. What happens then?

American_Jihadist on November 7, 2006 at 10:21 PM

I suspect he will un-conceed like Gore did in 2000.

EFG on November 7, 2006 at 10:24 PM

Right now I feel like I’m watching a real life version of the Battlestar Galactica election near the end of season 2. It’s truly horrifying to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that a victory by the Democrats spells almost certain disaster for this country, yet the majority of voters are voting in favor of that disaster.

There’s the same temptation to steal the election just to avoid the inevitable return of terrorist attacks within the U.S., mixed with the same sad knowledge that we cannot do it because it would destroy us from within.

Our country is lost and I am grieving for her.

EWTHeckman on November 7, 2006 at 10:26 PM

Steele has pulled even in Maryland as of now

William Amos on November 7, 2006 at 10:35 PM

Its not lost. Bush is there to veto the excesses. And this loss if it occurs will envirograte the republicans

2008 is our rally cry !

William Amos on November 7, 2006 at 10:37 PM

I think Bush feels that it is the Legislative Branch’s role to legislate, so he is loathe to veto. We’ll see.

It would be a bit unfortunate if the BSG writers are prescient (about the wrong people losing the election). The people on New Caprica survived, but they took serious losses in the process.
