Join Hot Air Live! tonight at 8 PM Update: Show audio added

We’re going to try a podcasting experiment tonight on the eve of the mid-terms. Tonight at 8 pm, if the intertubes are willing, I’m going to host an interactive audio podcast. It will be hosted on TalkShoe, and you will be able to participate by phone, by Skype Out, and by text chat. Or you can just listen in over the web.

Here’s how it will work. First, go to TalkShoe and download their client software. It’s only a couple of megs. You’ll also have to set up a PIN so you can join the fun. It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to do that. Once you’re set up, keep an eye on this post and I’ll pop back in later to announce the call-in number and show ID.

We’ll be talking about your predictions and mine for the elections, along with other stories bubbling around the blogs. We’ll also preview Hot Air’s plans for election coverage.

Update: Ok peeps, here’s the show info. You can listen in without getting a PIN, but if you want to call in and/or text chat, you’ll have to follow the instructions above, get a PIN and download and install their client. It’s a bit klugy over there at TalkShoe but it all basically works. The call-in number for TalkShoe’s main switcher is (724) 444-7444. The Hot Air Live! show ID is 4925.

Before we dive into this thing, I want to make it clear that I’m not tech support for TalkShoe or Skype or whatever you happen to be using to call in. I’m as much a babe in the woods on the tech side of TalkShoe as you are. As the host I’ll be able to do one or two things that you can’t, but beyond that the technology is a black box to me. I plan to run this chat like a radio talk show, more or less, since letting everyone talk at the same time just produces a wall of noise. The text chat is a big free-for-all though.

This should be fun (er, if everything works). Talk to ya in about 50 minutes.

Update:
Here’s the recorded show, in case you weren’t able to tune in.

Is that 8 PM EDT or PDT?

Nethicus on November 6, 2006 at 4:24 PM

Eastern.

Bryan on November 6, 2006 at 4:27 PM

This looks like a good idea, Bryan. Unless I misunderstood, you don’t need a PIN unless you intend to produce a podcast. I think you can participate with just a username and password.

Bugler on November 6, 2006 at 4:28 PM

It would appear that you need a PIN in order participate (i.e call in), but not if you intend to only listen.

-phil

phile on November 6, 2006 at 4:30 PM

That’s probably right, phil. I’ll look at it again.

Bugler on November 6, 2006 at 4:32 PM

Use this link to go to the downloads section. It will prompt you to create an account first.

http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/Downloads.jsp

wearyman on November 6, 2006 at 4:34 PM

Phil’s right. You need a PIN to call in, but not just to listen.

Bugler on November 6, 2006 at 4:44 PM

Rats. I was hoping PST. But know I’ll be wishing you luck as I put the kiddies to bed. How long will it last?

Nethicus on November 6, 2006 at 4:52 PM

My Predictions:

Democrats will probably win because Democrats voters are very motivated to win, at almost any cost.

Republican voters seem kind of apathetic right now, but if they do go vote then Republicans will win.

So, if you’re a Republican get your butt to the polls. If you don’t vote, then don’t want to hear any whining or complaining about your next Democrat representative.

Lawrence on November 6, 2006 at 4:54 PM

A question:

What time zone, in reference to the 8pm hour?

Lawrence on November 6, 2006 at 4:56 PM

how does it work on skype?

Defector01 on November 6, 2006 at 5:02 PM

I’m having trouble getting their software to download. I picked a PIN, and then I click on the “step-2 download” button, and it thinks about it and reloads exactly the same page. My pop-up blocker is off. Anyone have any advice?

see-dubya on November 6, 2006 at 5:05 PM

Never mind. Answering my own question, here’s a direct link to a download page that works.

see-dubya on November 6, 2006 at 5:09 PM

Not really topical, but this struck me as funny from the license agreement: THE TALKSHOE SOFTWARE IS NOT INTENDED FOR USE IN THE OPERATION OF NUCLEAR FACILITIES, AIRCRAFT NAVIGATION OR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS, LIFE SUPPORT MACHINES OR OTHER EQUIPMENT IN WHICH THE FAILURE OF THE TALKSHOE SOFTWARE COULD LEAD TO DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY, OR SEVERE PHYSICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE.

Then we’re in the clear. Cool!

It’s 8 PM Eastern, and I expect it to last about an hour.

What a bummer. 7:00 is a terrible time for me. hell hour around the casa – bath, bedtime story, you know the drill. ya’ll have fun.

I hope Michelle is there for all you horny cavemen types, but for us gals, I’ll take Bryan anyday of the week, and twice on Sundays!

seejanemom on November 6, 2006 at 5:42 PM

I might drop by. Not sure if I’ll be around atm. Just in case I don’t, have fun everyone. :)

Benaiah on November 6, 2006 at 6:23 PM

Fine, dis all of us on the left coast who are just heading home from the saltmines at that time.

And not that it’s a showstopper for me, but you do realize the Raiders are on MNF tonight, right?

::wondering if he can yet again beat the IT monkeys and load the setup at work::

Freelancer on November 6, 2006 at 6:29 PM

Next time spare a thought for those of us on GMT…. Its a work night! Have fun, Brian of London sends greatings from Shire Network News. Look forward to hearing the recording. If this thing works I may have to try hosting one of these for Shire Network News.

Oh… and on the subject of elections, check out our attack add in this 3 min special.

brianoflondon on November 6, 2006 at 6:38 PM

It’s times like this I’m glad to be on the east coast. Although ironically, 8-8:30 is bed/bath time for the rugrats around my house as well. Oh well, I suppose I can always listen in.

I’m a Raider fan too but I figure this web thingy will be slightly less ugly than a Raiders game. ;)

Wall of noise at 8:00 ET? Hannity & Colmes doesn’t start ’til 9:00 ET. ZING!

RightWinged on November 6, 2006 at 7:48 PM

Is anyone else having trouble downloading it? It’s telling me the file is corrupted.

tikvah on November 6, 2006 at 7:54 PM

Go to the home page: http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/main.jsp

And go to the navigation panel on the bottom, click download. I had trouble with downloading from the singup page as well, but this worked fine.

Freelancer on November 6, 2006 at 7:59 PM

AP, it looks like TalkShoe needed a warning that HotAir was inbound. The site seems to be locked up if you aren’t already in.

Freelancer on November 6, 2006 at 8:06 PM

I’m listening now. I tried to get on the chat/talk part but it kept kicking me back to the download page even though I already DL’ed the thing.

Benaiah on November 6, 2006 at 8:14 PM

I am listening a bit,, but it sounds like a couple neighbors in any city USA talking about the latest BS on the news. Nothing wrong with that, but no ground breaking news int he chat. We should all be woried,, if people vote like they drive, we are screwed.. If anyone has insight into that, than speak up..

The sound is breaking up..

dammit, my ISP sucks… Time Warner took of Adelphia ,a nd Time Warner/RoadRunner Sucks bigtime…

Ha! he brings up France.. talking about a country that deserves to go to hell..

retired on November 6, 2006 at 8:28 PM

GOOD LUCK!

Sounds really cool.

Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll get to listen live.

Any chance of having the audio available for a regular .mp3 (or .wma etc.) download later?

I’d like to be able to hear y’all later.

LegendHasIt on November 6, 2006 at 8:36 PM

The website sucks. It refuses to let me download the software.

DaveS on November 6, 2006 at 8:49 PM

Ahh… Freelancer, good call. That download works as well.

AHHHAGGAHAGHGAHHAGAGAHGHAGAGHAH

Stupid software kicks me out. At least it says I am loged in. Can’t listen or anything. Wasted a good 40 minutes there.

Rustyw on November 6, 2006 at 9:03 PM

Good show guys. Some dropout in the audio towards the end there though. (~9:02 – 9:03PM)

I’m impressed by y’alls knowledge of the various local races.

Well done, Bryan. Imperfect technically, but you were great.

I couldn’t get through, either. :(

Uh-oh, I take it back, you failed the boss. You’re fired.

I have a mac. I was able to download and listen easily (within about 5 minutes). That’s the thing about mac’s – they work every time, and look cool to boot. Ya’ll need to do this again.

On this election eve I am thank-ful for sites like HA and MM. We owe you our thanks, in addition to firefighters, police, EMT, veterans and our troops here and abroad. A very important service you provide in safeguarding our futures. Fight the Jihad!

infidel4life on November 6, 2006 at 9:08 PM

No problem with Firefox when I was signed in. Downloading the client I had to use the link first posted by wearyman.

Had a bit of a problem connecting to the call with Vonayge. Cell phone was fine.

For the first call, I thought the content was pretty good.

Some of the tech details need to be ironed out before the next call however.

Thanks Bryan for setting this up.

F15Mech on November 6, 2006 at 9:18 PM

I signed up fine. Didn’t download anything but got to hear Hot Air Live for a few minutes. When I was able to return, I couldn’t find you guys anywhere on the Talkshoe site. What gives?

In addition, they asked me copy and paste of long string of funny letters back to them, which I did. Great concept, but I wish it works better the next time you guys do it.

sharinlite on November 6, 2006 at 9:18 PM

hmmm…had problem d/l through firefox…clean d/l with IE 6

lsutiger on November 6, 2006 at 9:21 PM

Vonayge = Vonage

F15Mech on November 6, 2006 at 9:21 PM

I even had a problem calling in at first. Apparently Skype users can get hung up punching in the show IDs and PINs. But once I got past that it worked on my end of the call just fine.

But technical bugs aside, it was a fun show and I hope you all enjoyed it. We’ll probably do it again.

Bryan on November 6, 2006 at 9:23 PM

I guess I should specify FF 1.5.0.7, I’ve not upgraded yet to the somewhat iffy v2.

infidel4life on November 6, 2006 at 9:25 PM

Hmmmm…guess its over now…of course it is after what felt like a beta test of a new colonoscopy technique.

But Im listening to the “saved” podcast now.

I hadn’t had any experience with Macs until recently. My aunts own a store in the mall and I go in occassionally to help do a couple odd jobs my cousin can’t get to when she’s there by herself, and because the franchise uses Macs, I’m forced to. Luckily it’s mainly just for entering some information in to a spreadsheet, but sometimes for doing purchase orders, etc. I HATE MACS. Where the hell is the mouse button? And why does it click just because I lean to much on the mouse. Where’s the on button? Anyway, I’ll keep my start menu thank you.

RightWinged on November 6, 2006 at 9:40 PM

I tried the call-in number and Linda Richman answered. What’s the real number?

eagles5 on November 6, 2006 at 9:55 PM

Listened in and enjoyed what I got to hear!
I was a little baffled by the mention of a hatchet job on Talent, I’d not heard about that. Of course, that may be because I don’t watch local news and my ability to stream radio has been destroyed since I let IE7 install.

LOL I was listening fo a while not realizing you weren’t live. You said Michelle was on TV I turned around and she wasn’t but Gretta was, then I realize, it wasn’t live, but still good not live. Hope y’all do it again sometime.

I listened to the ‘cast late. A fine debut, Bryan!

Do this again soon. I’ll sign up to call in.

Lone Star on November 7, 2006 at 6:33 PM

Hummm…. I’ve dowloaded the Talkshoe program and installed, it seems to beworking OK and I’ve tried to find a way to chat. Don’t see how it’s done. No chat button per se, no place to enter the chat number ID 4925, that I see. This software IMHO is kinda like a car without a steering wheel.

Got a feeling I’m not doing something quite right.
