Saddam has a little longer to live unless he slips and hits his head in some lethal manner before then.

On President aging, look at all of the two term President's before and after pictures and you'll see Bush 43 is like the rest. I was hoping he would be the exception but I guess not. It is a grueling job. I can't see why anyone would want to be President. Lord I hope Hillary never gets there and definitely not a two-termer. We'd all turn to stone.

As was said, 9-11 can't be swept under the rug. I mean someone has to respond and keep up the response plus run the homeland too. Its also tough when the other party is bashing the hell out of you day and night and wants us to lose just so they can say the Republicans screwed up. We're not only fighting the enemy, we're fighting ourselves too. Thats gotta stop so we can get out troops home sooner.

You’re probably right, Esthier. I think it’s a stressful job. But then, when they get out, like Clinton or Bush Sr., they seem to age at a normal rate again.

It reminds me of the ring bearer (Gollum, Bilbo, then Frodo) in The Lord of the Rings in reverse.

Well, in two years George W. Bush gets to put down his burden.

Christoph on November 5, 2006 at 3:54 PM

Exactly. And come on, Bush hasn't even had sexual harrassment as a way to relieve stress. Though let's face it, I'm sure Laura is much warmer to come home to after a long day at the office.

I’m a Christian and I’m for the death penalty, especially in a case like this. There are people who do such horrific deeds that the only thing to do is remove them from this Earth. As a Christian, what I won’t do is presume to know what will happen to Saddam, al-Zarqawi, etc., when they meet their maker. Eternal judgment is left to God alone.

eucher on November 5, 2006 at 6:45 PM

Yeah, you can add me to this list as well, especially with this case. Who can promise Saddam would never be freed? It's not as though he has none who are loyal to him. I'm wouldn't be surprised if they wouldn't break him out at some point.

Besides, the ultimate humiliation has got to be a public hanging. And the whole reason he gave for killing all those people (the ones for which he's going to be hung) was an attempted assassination. It's a little ironic but fitting.

And last, as a Christian, I can't ignore the fact that God Himself called on the Israelites to engage in capital punishment. God is God and has not changed. So I cannot believe that God now believes the death penalty is unjust.

Benaiah,

Wishing for the salvation of all, even the most eggregious and brutal dictator, is proper and Biblical. But that doesn't supplant execution as a proper penalty for the murderous barbarism Saddam dealt to Iraq for nearly four decades. He has earned this punishment.

There are sins which are rightly "unto death". The person makes that choice, and if it carries with it eternal punishment as well, that doesn't make it less appropriate. As I know you'd agree, we each deserve that punishment, short of the saving grace of Christ through His substitutionary sacrifice, the shedding of His blood paying our debt.

Saddam isn't going to hang tomorrow, he gets an automatic appeal. You can always pray for a miracle that he has an epiphany before then. I confess that my prayer list for salvations will never be short enough for me to find room for Saddam Hussein on it. Far too many people I care more about.

I think Bush looks darn good!
(Wish he'd leave Laura and be my baby...*sigh*)
Yes, he's older and grayer, but as we all have said, he's been President during some of the most trying times this country's ever seen, he really doesn't take a vacation and he takes the business of being the leader of the Free World and this wonderful country very seriously!
I love him!
VIVA BUSH!

I was hoping they'd let Cheney take Saddam on a little hunting trip... only this time the turkey would be a known target, not some klutz lawyer sticking his head up in a free fire zone.

But this is good noose, in any case.

As the spaghetti Western put it: HANG 'EM HIGH!

I agree with you. I am also a Christian. The New Testament tells Christians they are to abide by the laws of the land. If the law of the land says the penalty for murder is death, how could one, in good conscious, not abide in the law. Render unto Caeser what is Caeser's and.... well, you know that verse.

He just needs a haircut, which, unfortunately, was the first thing I noticed. He also is probably tired from campaigning so much. His speech was very good, straight to the point and he praised our troops, as usual. God bless him and our troops, without whom this "victory" would not be possible.

I think we'd all look old if we had to wake up every morning to find out who's the latest to compare us to Hitler. To wake every morning knowing you have half of your countrymen either deaf, dumb, and blind to the Islamo-fascism that threatens or blindly rabid in their pursuit to regain political power at all costs. I know I would've long ago snapped and said the hell with it......of course as I was leaving I would've told the libs exactly what I think of them and where they can kiss it.......

Being a Christian, this in regards to the death penalty, doesn't mean you sign a suicide pact with reality. Yes, there is turn the other cheek, redemption, forgiveness and the like, but I refuse to believe that God would frown on us for sending him the garbage of this world to do with what he will. Someone attacking me or my family does not require me to turn the other cheek. I can forgive in time someone who killed my son, while at the same time supporting the punisment of death for that act of evil. Even the bible acknowledges render un to Caesar, so I believe that God has given us the mind to reason for a reason while we inhabit his Earth. Forgiveness and punishment are not at odds with one another. I can forgive while still punishing wrong deeds.......

Is that the same EU who has no problem with trade dealings with China, a country somewhere to the East where 5.000 to 10.000 people are executed each year?

The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of a thousand is a statistic ...

Is that the same EU who has no problem with trade dealings with China, a country somewhere to the East where 5.000 to 10.000 people are executed each year?

Because I’m a christian and believe in redemption, I’m against the death penalty.

I'm a Christian and I'm for the death penalty, especially in a case like this. There are people who do such horrific deeds that the only thing to do is remove them from this Earth. As a Christian, what I won't do is presume to know what will happen to Saddam, al-Zarqawi, etc., when they meet their maker. Eternal judgment is left to God alone.

Even so, it seems like the easy way out for someone that slaughtered so many people. Rotting in a cell until his dying day seems a much more fitting end.

Actually, that wouldn't be a way out whatsoever. If Saddam lived, both his victims of past and present would fear his return, and his followers had every incentive to fight for it.

Don't forget that this man probably has vast amounts of money left in Swiss bank accounts, and that his so-called "lawyers" would more than willingly pass on information to his paramilitary forces in the Sunni regions.

After all, detaining mob leaders in Italy and Latin America didn't exactly stop their rule, did it?

Personally I couldn't see any other realistic outcome for the trial. If the guy responsible for the torture, rape, and slaughter of hundreds of thousands doesn't deserve the death penalty, who does? Obviously people who are against the death penalty will answer that question differently, and I can respect that, but I'm a real Old Testament guy when it comes to giving the ultimate punishment for ultimate crimes. Give him life in prison, and he'll live with the hope of being freed and getting back into power until the day he dies. Execute him, and like the man said, you take away all he has and all he's ever gonna have. And Iraq will never truly be able to move on until he's gone--he'll be the elephant in the room. The Sunnis would never give up on freeing him and bringing him back to power, and the Shia and Kurds would live in dread of the same thing. With Uday and Qusay already dead, the dynasty dies with him.

Why do all presidents look like they age about 40 years in their 8 years in office?

Because they literally have to hold the world on their shoulders during their terms in office. I can't imagine the stress that comes with that position.

The long hair is on purpose. He's distancing himself from his previous look before the vote. And it's working... his approval ratings are rising.

Karl Rove, you MAGNIFICENT bastard! There is your conspiracy, leftists! It is there for you to see.

He is mocking you. Yes, Bush mocks you with his hippie-like hair and his beady eyes. You must respect his authority!

The president looks old.

I think it’s partly that he needs a haircut. The long hair emphasizes the grey.

Because I'm a christian and believe in redemption, I'm against the death penalty. However I can see how it would be better if Saddam wasn't even an option as a leader for some of those people.

MK, if George sees your latest video, you may get a call from him asking you to tell him which way to vote ;) And Laura will head-slap him when she gets home :))

Damn! I really want to respond to this with an off-color joke but I might incur the wrath of the Moderator God so I'll play it safe... for now.
