Video: Steele slams Cardin, slaps down Colmes’ ‘gotcha’ rhetoric

Steele on Cardin’s patriot act comment: “He’s been there so long he doesn’t know how long he’s been there.” Ouch.
Alan “I’m agnostic as to whether the government is responsible for 9/11” Colmes played gotcha with Steele’s position on the war. Colmes quoted Steele’s position on timetables and goals and tried to relate that to being against the term “staying the course”. How the two are related, I don’t know.

Video don’t work.

Alan is really getting cranky lately.
infidel4life on November 3, 2006 at 10:51 PM
Video worked fine for me.
Was it a beatdown or a smackdown?
F15Mech on November 3, 2006 at 10:54 PM
He sounded so glad to hear Alan. No one’s that glad to hear Alan.
I was a little worried about the deference he is ascribing to the Baker report.
see-dubya on November 3, 2006 at 10:57 PM
“Hey, Alan…how ya doin’ man….”
That wasn’t a “glad to hear Alan” greeting.
That was a “I *own* you, stringbean” greeting.
Steele got juice!
Puritan1648 on November 3, 2006 at 11:13 PM
I am so SICK of democratic talking points about the war. If they could pull their heads out of their collective sphincters for ONE moment and look at what’s really going on in the Muslim world – they would know we have to get this thing done right and not pull out.
Besides, pulling out isn’t very manly….
Dr. Gecko on November 3, 2006 at 11:15 PM
The only thing that Ol’ Colmes *isn’t* sour about is what he apparently sees as chaos in Iraq…a little schadenfreude goin’ on there…they show him on camera from the nipples up…he was dancin’ a hoedown under the desk at the prospect of death, destruction and division in Iraq.
…but I don’t question his patriotism….
Puritan1648 on November 3, 2006 at 11:15 PM
Smackdown on the Snarky McColmes!
Go Steele!
tickleddragon on November 3, 2006 at 11:25 PM
Alan knows he has to start acting tougher or he’ll get the Wolf Blitzer treatment.
Coyote D. on November 3, 2006 at 11:39 PM
Alan *still* has that tampon wedged up in there sideways. Boy gonna need to change that thing before he goes toxic.
Then again, maybe the whole pea soup shooting out, head spinning around; “Contradictory statements; Rumsfield should go” crap questions are proof he’s already toxic.
E L Frederick on November 3, 2006 at 11:43 PM
Alan rejoices with elation upon hearing and imagining bad things in Iraq. I’ve never seen a happier man about war. If he had been at Little Big Horn the indians would have had to put up a totem pole of him dancing his jig to honor his jubilation.
Griz on November 4, 2006 at 12:05 AM
It is just me, or does Alan Colmes REALLY bear an uncanny resemblance to Dr. Seuss’s “Grinch” (that stole Christmas)?
CyberCipher on November 4, 2006 at 12:06 AM
Looks like “momma Maebel” did good! :-)
SouthernGent on November 4, 2006 at 12:10 AM
I like Steele, but he’s a touch too ’street’.
I think he looks more like he could be Olberdouche’s bastard brother.
SilverStar830 on November 4, 2006 at 12:34 AM
Alan could free up a lot of time if instead of “I’m agnostic as to whether the government is responsible for 9/11”, he just said “I’m a complete moron”. Same statement, way fewer syllables.
ReubenJCogburn on November 4, 2006 at 12:41 AM
Steele completely neuters Colmes. Hilarious. Great job getting Steele the undecided vote Colmes. Interview every Conservative you can…
Theworldisnotenough on November 4, 2006 at 12:46 AM
A-combsdumb…got ‘bleeped’…and I love it…
areseaoh on November 4, 2006 at 12:48 AM
Alan Colmes’ performance was pitiful. If he wants to improve his street cred he has to stop making his adversaries look so good by comparison …
RD on November 4, 2006 at 1:41 AM
It was really a smack down. The guy always loses it sometimes.
Comparing apples to mangoes, it is really amazing.
Ouabam on November 4, 2006 at 4:56 AM
Steele needs to be held up as the marquee of the Republican party, and NOW. How much poise and self-confidence does it show, when you know what kind of twisted vitriol you are about to face, and you say, “Hey, Alan, how ya doin’, man?”? He was genuinely looking forward to knocking each of Alan’s curveballs into the parking lot.
Compare his style and presence with John Kerry’s. Even when making his initial “non-apology” he had to refer to notes about five times in less than two minutes. In all the clips I’ve seen with Steele, he speaks from what he knows and what he believes, so he doesn’t need to review prepared thoughts.
Colmes gets more and more sickening each day as the election gets closer. His shameful parting shot at John O’neill, and the attempt to make complimentary statements seem contradictory with Michael Steele. How does someone not simply implode from all that hypocrisy and hatred? I believe that he’s fairly intelligent, which means he can’t really believe half of the things he says or asks.
Freelancer on November 4, 2006 at 5:49 AM
Meh. Getting the best of Alan Colmes is like beating up the slowest kid on the playground–some of the kids who matter might notice, but the fence-sitters won’t care.
The real story here, which was mentioned in the clip, is the fact that Steele was endorsed by several black Democrats in his home county because they realized that the Democrat party has been taking them for granted. If Steele wins and that starts happening in more places around the country, we’re going to see the Democrat party die a quick and painful death. What will result will either be a more responsible liberal party or a leftist movement that will guarantee more conservative governments for the forseeable future.

Bottom line: I like Steele and think he is the better candidate. However, Steele will have to get a miracle to win in Maryland.
msflea on November 4, 2006 at 7:56 AM
The miracle has happened…….
BacaDog on November 4, 2006 at 8:34 AM
Colmes is so condescending. He deserves to get his peepee smacked.
seejanemom on November 4, 2006 at 8:47 AM
Not being a Marylander, I haven’t paid a whole lot of attention to that race, but after watching that video, I have to say I like this guy. I don’t think he “smacked down” Colmes at all. He was thoroughly polite and explained how Colmes was wrong in thinking that his two statements were contradictory. In fact, I think Colmes’ question was actually really good for Steele, because it gave him a chance to make the point that it’s possible to adjust the strategy in Iraq without abandoning the place.
Anyway, I thought Steele was very clear and straightforward and gave direct answers to the questions, which is something you don’t see a lot of politicians doing. Let’s hope that his time in the Senate (knock wood) won’t change that.
Farmer_Joe on November 4, 2006 at 9:04 AM
People accuse Steele of not having a platform, but I think that he DOES have one, its just that people ask so many questions so quickly that he hardly ever gets a chance to talk about it. This was one plank of it– re-evaluation of the war in Iraq.
He’s honest about Rummy without being facetious; its a very leftist line to say — in criticism of Rummy — that he should be fired/ resign… Steele simply says he would not be HIS SecDef. A way of criticizing him without denigrating the administration.
RiverCocytus on November 4, 2006 at 9:34 AM
If Steele wins…what kind of backlash can we expect from prominent black politicians?
What will the outgoing congresswoman Cynthia McKinney say?
Black Adam on November 4, 2006 at 9:46 AM
Unfortunately, I believe that his desk is the closest he’s ever been to either soldiers, war machines, or the front. Alan Colmes is the perfect example of the desk general and/or backseat driver. For those who have been there, to say that he’s a REMF is putting it in context – except that he’s so rear, he’s home!
As for the election – prepare for the best man to be elected to Congress –
The Man of Steele!
Emmett J. on November 4, 2006 at 10:57 AM
Micheal Steele schooling Alan. That was great. He clearly showed he understands what the Senate’s powers and responsibilities are and I have no doubt he will fulfill them to his best ability. I wish he were from my state!
CrimsonFisted on November 4, 2006 at 12:16 PM
Yeah, I’d love to see him wipe the floor with Feinstein here is CA.
infidel4life on November 4, 2006 at 12:44 PM
er, in CA.
infidel4life on November 4, 2006 at 12:45 PM
Just think – if he works out and keeps the momentum going – How about Steele for President in ‘08? (also, we could all actually vote for him then)
Win – win all the way around with –
Steele – the Real Deal!
Emmett J. on November 4, 2006 at 1:06 PM
Steele will get enough of the black vote to make him a Senator. He is calm under pressure and I feel with be a great leader.
Wade on November 4, 2006 at 6:59 PM
Alan is so obnoxious lately that I have the remote control in my hand so I will not damage the TV or raise my blood pressure to the boiling point.
The mute button works wonders for me.
Every time someone tells Alan he is wrong, he is offended and puts on this little hissy fit act of indignation. Why do Democrats or in Alan’s case communists always get “offended and play the victim.
He has become the DNC talking points spokes hole that keeps on giving.
ScottyDog on November 4, 2006 at 8:30 PM
Go Michael ! ! Don’t know if anyone caught it but he
did refer to Rummy as Sec of state.
I still can see him on the VP short list in ‘08
Go Michael !
