I’m from the opposite end of the state than the Fords, but their elitist antics are well known even up here amongst the hillbilly-cracker set. They have a history of flaunting the law and they still get re-elected. If they can’t get re-elected, they just find another family member to run instead.

You’ve gotta give him some credit, though. For a young, “green” candidate he did do really well in my opinion.

You do realize that you’re referring to the sitting congressman from Tennessee’s 9th district, holding the seat vacated by his father since 1996, right? Green? No. Incompetent at a “real” campaign because the 9th in TN is completely in the bag for the donks.

The Ford family is as elitist as you can get, short of living in Mass. They presume success because they can depend on the NAACP vote. They are one of the most racist families I’ve had the misfortune to witness in person. Harold Sr. could give Al Sharpton lessons.

Aside from this is the hypocrisy of bashing success. As mentioned by another comment, the family mortuary businesses have made the Ford’s quite well off in their own right.

Poverty must be the ultimate moral authority on how to manage a government’s money, then.

I get the impression that the Corker campaign has wisely decided to let Ford do all the talking in the last week, hoping he’ll ride Kerry’s verbal coattails. Seems to be working.

Mr. Corker stated that he did not believe in police/firefighters having the right to collective bargaining: I saw no mention of “striking”. In fact, I find it hard to believe that police or firefighters would expect or want to be able to strike.

Any group of workers should be able to use collective bargaining as a tool to obtain wages/benefits. A negotiated contract would prevent the executive from abrogating an expected wage increase of X% and substituting a lower percentage, which is apparently what Mr. Corker did in this case. Mr. Corker has effectively (and needlessly) driven cops and firemen into the Ford camp. I would not be surprised if they vote, en masse, for Mr. Ford.

I hope Mr. Corker is elected…I just think he was wrong on this issue (and that Mr. Ford lied about wages being frozen).

Collective bargaining does not equal “right-to-strike”.

The national media isn’t focusing so much on the 8pt Corker lead from yesterday’s poll, but Ford has to know its over and is just trying for a Hail Mary, so to speak. You’ve gotta give him some credit, though. For a young, “green” candidate he did do really well in my opinion. I think that if more Democrats were like him the country would be in much better shape. He even opposes the Iraq war in a fairly responsible, civil way from what I’ve seen.

And this with the media heavily on his side. There’s a very sharp distinction to make between this campaign and that of Michael Steele in Maryland.
