Lazy and uneducated photo of the day!

posted at 12:33 pm on November 1, 2006 by Allahpundit

Someone just sent me this. I think it’s too good to be true, but you can inspect the full-sized version yourself by clicking the image.

If it is a photoshop, it’s awfully well done.

Looks real enough to me.

EFG on November 1, 2006 at 12:36 PM

I believe it’s real. Look at the way the sun hits the letters, the shadows, etc. Great job, troops! Attaway to skin Kerry. That needs to be made into a bumper sticker.

pullingmyhairout on November 1, 2006 at 12:38 PM

AP, if you look at the bumper of the vehicle on the far left, it looks like it says “1-34″ Which is a unit ID. Probably 1st battalion, 34th regiment.

Two things. This can probably be checked against units currently in Iraq or Afghanistan, and thus help confirm or deny if this is a fake.

But it can be argued that this would be a violation of OPSEC to place this on the internet. It may be silly, or not. Just something to think about.

EFG on November 1, 2006 at 12:41 PM

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Ha!

sonnyspats1 on November 1, 2006 at 12:41 PM

As a former professional graphics artist, specializing in 2D photoshop design, I would bet my reputation that that is real. No way is that a photoshop.

The effort that would be required to photoshop that with such high quality would be well beyond what any sane person would do for the sake of the joke. Making a simple and obvious photoshop of it would accomplish the same idea, and no one could assemble that so quickly if their intent was to lie and make it seem real.

thelinyguy on November 1, 2006 at 12:42 PM

I just looked at the full-size, Allah. If this is a fake, it’s the best fake I’ve ever seen.

Here’s what I think. Kerry’s words already got to the front. It doesn’t take long these days, since the troops have net access on most forward bases. The troops, who have digital cameras and net linkups, have responded to Kerry’s slur with wit.

Bryan on November 1, 2006 at 12:42 PM

All I can say is SLAM!

Vanquisher on November 1, 2006 at 12:43 PM

This is a case where the reality of the picture does not matter. The message is so right on that even if it were faked the “speaking truth to to the powerful elitist asshats” theme holds .

bbz123 on November 1, 2006 at 12:43 PM

I’d like to put another plug for appealforcourage.org here. It’s a way for active duty members to register their opposition to the politicians and media fighging us in our mission in Iraq.
Thanks,

Jason on November 1, 2006 at 12:44 PM

Looks like Afghanistan to me… but that’s just me. If it is Afghanistan, it’s even funnier. You know us dumb Americans don’t know geography…

E L Frederick on November 1, 2006 at 12:45 PM

The photo appears real, but is it truly in Iraq? Who sent it to you AP? If they are saying they are in Iraq, you can give them commenting priveleges and then check their IP location or whatever, right?

Anyway, as I was saying, the photo appears real, but those trees don’t look very “Iraqish”… but I’m not expert on Middle East plantlife either.

RightWinged on November 1, 2006 at 12:46 PM

efua on November 1, 2006 at 12:47 PM

pullingmyhairout on November 1, 2006 at 12:48 PM

oops, E L, I didn’t see your post. great minds think alike. :)

pullingmyhairout on November 1, 2006 at 12:48 PM

If it’s real, I would love to know who these guys are.

If it’s fake, it’s still funny. But if it’s real, it is awesome.

Esthier on November 1, 2006 at 12:49 PM

That is awesome! And if you click on the pic and look close, some of those collars aren’t light, either. That’s more than just a few privates screwing around–not that it wouldn’t be just as legitimate a criticism of Kerry’s words if it was.

ReubenJCogburn on November 1, 2006 at 12:49 PM

Hahahaha sow, reap, etc.

The US military may be the “uneducated dregs of society,” but they sure as hell are funny!

I thought the same thing myself. That’s why in my post at 12:41 I mentioned the possibility they could be in Afghanistan.

EFG on November 1, 2006 at 12:50 PM

That is the funniest damn thing I have ever seen!

dallas94 on November 1, 2006 at 12:50 PM

What do you mean? Do light collars mean a lower rank or something?

Esthier on November 1, 2006 at 12:52 PM

Nah…. would be even funnier if they were from… Massachesets……

Romeo13 on November 1, 2006 at 12:52 PM

I didn’t get out of the green zone. All I saw was palm trees. However we had alot of pine in and around Kabul, AF.

E L Frederick on November 1, 2006 at 12:53 PM

Kerry, PWNED!

rightside on November 1, 2006 at 12:54 PM

I just about spit my coffee on my iBook, that was so damned funny! LOL! You gotta hand it to our troops, they responded with brilliance! I believe it not a fake. I doubt anyone could make a photoshop with such accuracy in so short a time. Gotta love it!

DakRoland on November 1, 2006 at 12:55 PM

It’s on Drudge’s front page!!! LOL!!

Egfrow on November 1, 2006 at 12:55 PM

That looks like a hastily made sign being held by people who think it’s pretty funny.

I’d say it’s real and they’re right. Hooah!

Pablo on November 1, 2006 at 12:56 PM

Someone get this on Drudge.

Enrique on November 1, 2006 at 12:56 PM

I’m pretty sure that the third guy from the right is a Major.

Esthier on November 1, 2006 at 12:52 PM

Got it in one. It’s just a figure of speech.

ReubenJCogburn on November 1, 2006 at 12:58 PM

As an AF veteran of almost 8 years, I am deeply insulted. He has no idea of the technical expertise required in all the occupations that encompass our military. We have an extremely smart military force that is not exactly easy to enlist in or to attain a commision in. Officers that serve our military have an impressive list of academic credentials. Enlisted members are required to go through a lot of technical training and on the job training. We have the finest military in the world. I only wish we would have senators that are half as smart as our men and women who serve us voluntarily.

Vanquisher on November 1, 2006 at 12:59 PM

Out-frickin-standing, gang. Thank you for your service.

bdfaith on November 1, 2006 at 12:59 PM

For the benefit of any readers, “ReubenJCogburn on November 1, 2006 at 12:49 PM” mentioned that the collars didn’t look light.

In the past, the U.S. army had the rank on the PC and the collars of the BDUs. Hence the reference to the collar.

However, just recently, they switched to the newstyle of BDUs. And now, instead of putting rank on collars, they put it on a chest epaulet.

So if you all are going to try to look at their rank, look at their chest or headgear.

Sometimes, headgear doesn’t include rank. But the the top/blouse/shirt will have it on the chest.

EFG on November 1, 2006 at 12:59 PM

That’s what I was thinking too, Kid. Looks like this little protest not only has the support of the chain-of-command, the c-o-c is actually in on it. God bless the troops and HOOAH!

ReubenJCogburn on November 1, 2006 at 1:02 PM

HAHAHAHAHAAHH! LOVE IT!!!

Brian on November 1, 2006 at 1:04 PM

According to photoshop, this is an actual photo.

Camera Data 1
Canon Powershot SD400
2006-11-01 05:41:20-0600

…looks like it was taken today at 05:41 central standard time.

E L Frederick on November 1, 2006 at 1:04 PM

EFG’s right. I spot a Major, an LT, two senior NCOs, and some E-4s. Not exactly high-school dropouts here.

Kid from Brooklyn on November 1, 2006 at 1:07 PM

Halp us Job Carry, your owr only hope!

This picutre is getting sent far and wide. I’m sending it to one of my friends in Irak.

BohicaTwentyTwo on November 1, 2006 at 1:08 PM

…I see 1-34 either MTB (motor transport battaliion) or RTB, which leaves me stumped. I also see what looks like 1-123 either BN or EN, the latter leading me to believe it’s engineers.

…I tried to make out the patches, but couldn’t…until I looked in the background and saw a full-color banner of their patch on a brown shipping container with “TEX” on it, back between the 1st and 2nd persons from the right. I tried to look up the patch (I’m thinking Reserves, who handle support troops, which is what I take these guys to be), but am running short of time and gotta scoot.

…either way, I’ve sent it to my active duty wife for her perusal, and she should get a kick out of it.

So much for “disastrous troop morale”….

Veterans are worse than elephants…elephants loose track of things time and again…but veterans never forget.

Puritan1648 on November 1, 2006 at 1:08 PM

You got it KFB. And the guy who is 2nd from the left looks like a 1LT, or a senior Warrent.

EFG on November 1, 2006 at 1:09 PM

I wonder if Frankenkerry can read it?….

Fargus on November 1, 2006 at 1:09 PM

its on drudge now. OUCH!

lorien1973 on November 1, 2006 at 1:09 PM

I’m 6’2″ and weigh 250. Upon seeing this GREAT photo, I let out a belly-laugh that broke the windows on the 1st floor of my home.
The Dems are a sick bunch of seditious, appeasing surrender-monkeys. The erudite Mr. Kerry has just put a face on the Demoncrat Party: if you don’t go to college and get a first-class brainwashing (to hate the U.S.), you’re a stupid loser and are destined to serve your country in the military. The implied slap in the face of our great men serving in Iraq and elsewhere is deplorable.
What did Kerry do with his education? He went on to make money the old-fashioned way; he married it.
GOD BLESS OUR MILITARY.

It does look like the finance building in Bagram. But I don’t see any mountains in the background.

JasonG on November 1, 2006 at 1:10 PM

Now that is how you write and dliver a good joke!

bbz123 on November 1, 2006 at 1:10 PM

It does look like the finance building in Bagram. But I don’t see any mountains in the background.

JasonG on November 1, 2006 at 1:10 PM

That was my first thought was somewhere around the Chapel/Finance/Gym. However like you said, the mountains are missing.

It could be northern Iraq I imagine… It’s got to still be pushing 90′s in Baghdad… looks colder than that from the trees in the photos.

E L Frederick on November 1, 2006 at 1:16 PM

Gah! Someone help! I’m dying of laughter and I can’t stop!! Too funny!

ViperPilot on November 1, 2006 at 1:16 PM

How could dummies like this ever come up with a joke?

Anyway, by now everyone knows Kerry slipped and mistakenly diclosed the secret plans for a draft if the Dems get in!

Gotta love those troops!

CanaryinaCoalMine on November 1, 2006 at 1:16 PM

Defector01 on November 1, 2006 at 1:18 PM

That looks like a M1117 on the left. Military Police, perhaps? That would explain the women-folk. Also they are made by Textron, that also explains the TEX shipping container. See for yourself.

BohicaTwentyTwo on November 1, 2006 at 1:18 PM

Gawd bles u Jon Carry. We’re gonna win, we’re gonna win.

That’s says something. These boys (and girls) are smart indeed!

BohicaTwentyTwo on November 1, 2006 at 1:23 PM

I think we all agree that the photo is real, but have you made an inroads on determining where it was taken? It really doesn’t matter obviously, but it will be interesting to know.

RightWinged on November 1, 2006 at 1:24 PM

That was my first thought was somewhere around the Chapel/Finance/Gym. However like you said, the mountains are missing.

There was a gym down there? When I was there, you know back when Afghanistan was tough ;), the gym was in a tent in the CTF 82 compund.
