Video: Bush rips Kerry for comments about troops; Update: McCain rips Kerry again

I thought the nutroots would be having an out-of-body experience after Kerry’s remarks today but it turns out some of them are smarter than that. Dean Barnett e-mails to point us towards this Kos thread, where opinion on Lurch is split. More significant is the verdict of Olbermannesque Bush-hater Jack “Broken Government” Cafferty, who played Brian Fantana to Kerry’s Champ Kind this afternoon by recommending he stop talking for awhile.

Speaking of Olby, with the American Legion and AmVets demanding an apology from Waffles, will he do the smart thing and call for him to retract? Or will he applaud the Senator’s descent into full-blown nutrootsdom? Olbermann Watch has the answer.

You know they were praying for someone in the background here to make a face.

Update: The quote of the day belongs to neither Bush nor Kerry but to an unnamed Congressman.

Update: Kos sounds the rallying cry as only he can.

Update: Tinti has video of Chris Matthews insisting that Kerry didn’t say what he actually said. McCain’s not buying it:

You can’t make this up. His statement, basically, was so demeaning to the men and women who are serving in the military that you will be even more grateful than you are at this moment that George Bush is president of the United States…

You can’t make this up. His statement was that if you get an education and you do well, then you don’t have to go to Iraq, and if you don’t have an education, then you have to go to Iraq. Do you know how demeaning that is to the men and women who are serving so magnificently in the cause of freedom and are fighting and dying in Iraq today? As I said, you can’t make it up.

Bush gives a kinda mellow smack but mellow is all that’s needed

Constantine on October 31, 2006 at 6:20 PM

Wow. A response of “Bush is teh stoopid” from the left.

How original.

Slublog on October 31, 2006 at 6:29 PM

Anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that was no goof up. No more so than when he called our troops murderers, rapists and terrorists. What he said is what he, and many of the Left, truly believe about people in the military.

To claim now, it was some botched joke about the President, is an insult to our intelligence. That’s the kind of insult people never forgive. JF’inK is DONE on the national level. If he had any sense of integrity, any sense of honor, he’d resign.

Senator Kerry’s 57 varieties of pathetic.

I’ve met nor heard of any significant number of people right or left, who hate the military. Sure, plenty hate the misuse of the military and the undue influence of and abuse by defense contractors, but you’ll find those who hate our soldiers as about as plentiful as the members of the Westboro Baptist Church.

When/where did Kerry call our troops “murderers, rapists and terrorists”?

Constantine on October 31, 2006 at 6:37 PM

This is one of those times that Bush makes me proud that I voted for him.

Some of them are smarter than that

On a HuffPo thread, AP is linked to once and MM twice, as a (badge of honor) wingnut reaction to Kerry’s Dummygate.

One of these ‘here’ is yours AP (and two are MM’s)

Below is Kerry’s statement responding to all the wingnuts going wild, which can be found here, here, here, here.

Absolutely - especially since we were repeatedly told in 2004 (albeit with good reason) that Kerry is so much of a better speaker than Bush.

One could easily believe that Bush could botch a joke with some of his other verbal follies, but it would be near impossible to believe that he has anything less than the utmost respect for our troops.

On the other hand, while we can acknowledge that Kerry is a better speaker than Bush, it’s pretty easy to believe that he would disrespect our troops given his deliberate, calculated remarks in 1971 or his more recent remarks in 2005, and some of his other history in between. It’s much harder to believe that this was some innocent gaffe, particularly after his defiant speech today.

Good smackdown by Bush, not too hard, just right to the point.

thirteen28 on October 31, 2006 at 6:41 PM

Did you hear how Kerry had testified before Congress about troop stupidity?

“They told the stories at times they had personally ran with scissors, put on shoes before socks, put on underwear before pants, connected positive to negative between two car batteries and then turned up the power, licked frozen telephone poles, blown their salaries on lottery tickets, drank expired milk, shouted “Shazam!” in fashion reminiscent of Jomer Pyle, set action figures on fire for fun, fed bears, and generally mooned the countryside of Iraq in addition to the normal mooning in war, and the normal and very particular mooning which is done by the applied stupidity of this country.”

On Face the Nation, Kerry accused U.S. troops of “terrorizing kids.”

Slublog on October 31, 2006 at 6:43 PM

Kos finally chimes in: “Kerry responded perfectly.”

Yes, instead of simply stating for the record that he misspoke, he lashed out at everyone taking him at his spoken word, accused them of distorting what he said, and faulted everyone except himself for saying something that was dumb on its face.

I imagine Kos would do the same thing. Perfectly.

He responded exactly as someone would if his goal was to convince the nutroots he’s not quite as big a goober as they remember. As for the rest of country, his response demonstrated extreme tone deafness.

Puritan1648,

Spot on! I’m sure Phil is comtemplating his next career move.

Did anyone catch the video with the short glimpse of Phil at the end? His face looks like someone repealled his favorite tax.

Constantine,

First the old ‘Bush Is Stoopid’ schtick, then a complete denial of the facts. Not unexpected - but still surprising when encountered.

And Kerry was not ‘just talking poorly’ - he was blantantly denegrating our troops, just as he has done in the past. Sometimes Bush does talk poorly - he has made me cringe while watching some of his speeches - but the content of his speeches are not in question, only the delivery. Kerry’s content is usually the cause of his problems.

Thank you, Slublog. Have you read the transcript? Probably not; otherwise you’d know that anybody who promotes the above statement is full of flaming horseshit. Kerry was advocating for veterans in every possible way, and reporting the same atrocities that others were:

“I would like to talk, representing all those veterans, and say that several months ago in Detroit, we had an investigation at which over 150 honorably discharged and many very highly decorated veterans testified to war crimes committed in Southeast Asia, not isolated incidents but crimes committed on a day-to-day basis with the full awareness of officers at all levels of command.”

He and many other veterans were reporting that atrocities were perpetrated on a regular basis. Does that mean all the troops? By that standard everybody who reported the abuses at Abu Gharib are saying all the troops in Iraq are torturers.

Constantine on October 31, 2006 at 7:06 PM

As soon as Kerry muttered the words,

“…everyone knows I would never say anything bad about our troops…”

the fat lady sang.

Kerry is a dick. Instead of showing some humility and contritenss for his ham-tongued attempt at slamming the President, he goes on the attack. The first rule of public life: if you make a mistake, make a heart-felt apology and the public will move on. Show defiance and you are dog meat.

Had Kerry shown some regret and even humor at himself for his slam on the troops, this would be old news tomorrow. Instead “angry John” shows up and blames Bush. And the story will go on and on and on. Thanks John. Keep it up.

Mallard T. Drake on October 31, 2006 at 7:17 PM

Thank you, Slublog. Have you read the transcript? Probably not…

Actually, yes I have. A few times. Perhaps you should reconsider your assumptions? And really, “flaming horseshit?” I’ve been civil with you. It’s regrettable you cannot show the same restraint.

Kerry, in his testimony, accused soldiers of war crimes and said in the act of waging war, was guilty of “murdering” Vietnamese. He also, in a remarkable similarity to his current rhetoric, accused the United States of violating the Geneva Conventions, despite the fact that the Vietnamese were engaged in true violations of those accords.

In his testimony regarding the ‘murder’ of Vietnamese troops, he made no distinction between those accused of war crimes and those who were not.

Slublog on October 31, 2006 at 7:18 PM

Constantine, damn. Just damn.

He and “many other veterans”? How many of those “veterans” were later shown to never have gone to Vietnam? Quite a few, and most of the ones with the choicest (i.e. most horrible) witnessed actions.

In other words, he used his service to act as credentials to liars who were slandering troops and wearing a uniform they never fought in while worrying about atrocities in places they’d never been.

This is advocating for vets?

Puritan1648 on October 31, 2006 at 7:33 PM

Kerry digs a deeper hole

But here’s the problem. In his moment of high dudgeon, he may have made matters worse. It probably wasn’t a good idea to accuse everyone who saw the video of his campaign appearance and thought he was disparaging the IQ of U.S. troops of being “crazy.”

You don’t have to be a right-wing radio talk show host to look at the video from Kerry’s campaign appearance yesterday and believe that he was indeed implying that those serving in Iraq are academic losers, there because they had no other choices.

It’s a safe guess that millions of Americans, including many Democrats, who saw the initial Kerry video have been shaking their collective heads all day wondering what was on his mind.

“Sen. Kerry has a history of saying unfortunate things and then not being able to explain them, because they are inexplicable,” Green said.

TheBigOldDog on October 31, 2006 at 7:33 PM

Slublog, I apologize for the profanity and losing my temper.

There’s a big, big difference between you taking issue with Kerry “not making distinctions” and criticizing the behavior of some troops, vs. claiming that Kerry said our soldiers were “murders, rapists, and terrorists.” These are the kinds of things that become “common knowledge” within an idealogical community, things that people hang many of their beliefs on, not realizing they just aren’t true. I’m sure the same thing happens on the other side of the spectrum.

Constantine on October 31, 2006 at 7:34 PM

Constinen: There is speaking “poorly” as you put it, or there is speaking Stupid, which as a Mother of a US Marine I feel quite free is stating that Senator Kerry did.

Since Cindy Sheehan and her groups get away with murder literely because of her status, then mine is being used to explain the finer points of not being a speech bigot to you.

PS constantine: since your boy Kerry is so ejumicated, could you explain his lower IQ and grades than the President you just didn’t seem to get the POINT from?

Noelie on October 31, 2006 at 7:38 PM

Eh, the profanity doesn’t bother me much - it was more the accusatory tone that I took issue with. I’ve been known to use profanity myself. I do appreciate the apology.

In the question and answer session of the testimony, in response to a question from Senator George Aiken, Kerry said the following:

The war will continue. So what I am saying is that yes, there will be some recrimination but far, far less than the 200,000 a year who are murdered by the United States of America, and we can’t go around- President Kennedy said this, many times.

There is a lawful distinction between killing in war and murder, and Kerry chose to ignore this distinction to make his answer more dramatic. In doing so, however, he perpetuated a slur against the troops who fought in that war.

Slublog on October 31, 2006 at 7:42 PM

A google serach “debunking john kerry’s winter soldier stories” returns over 85,000 responses. Many of them refer to the fraudulent nature of most of the VVAW group that Kerry claimed was the basis for his statement that included the 150 figure. That figure was made up by Kerry as was much of his testimony according to many who served with him.
Given his statements and history I don’t buy into this joke gone bad BS he is trying to push.

conservativecaveman on October 31, 2006 at 7:44 PM

That Was A Slander; That Wasn’t An Apology

John Kerry slandered the American military yesterday, showcasing one of the myths from the Vietnam era, and thus beginning the necessary extension of the effort to discredit the war –discrediting the warriors….

Terry Moran of ABC News said:

There is, Hugh, I agree with you, a deep anti-military bias in the media. One that begins from the premise that the military must be lying, and that American projection of power around the world must be wrong…

ABC News political director Mark Halperin: I totally agree. It’s one of the huge biases, along with gays, guns, abortion, and many other things…

The Kerry sneer is part and parcel of the Pelosi Democrats, just as the attempt to suppress the votes of military serving overseas in the Florida recount is part of the Democratic Party legacy.

Constantine has inadvertently come the closest to explaining Kerry’s monumental gaffe.

I believe it truly is a botched joke. Unfortunately (for the dems), Senator Golddigger dropped a Freudian slip in the middle of that joke. Kind of like the Vegas weatherman did over MLK weekend, and the St. Louis radio guy that got fired after “accidentally” slurring Condi Rice. On the bright side, Hillary has one less primary opponent to qorry about.

Assume for a moment that Kerry really was trying to make a “stupid” joke about the president. Is that really better? Is it something to be proud of that a former presidential candidate is basically resorting to flinging 2nd grade insults at the President of the U.S.?

In either case, Kerry comes across as a complete moron.

“We need an energy bill that encourages consumption.”

“Our enemies are innovative and resourceful. And so are we. They never stop thinking of new ways to harm our country and our people. And neither do we.”

Pretty consistent with his actions, too.

Constantine on October 31, 2006 at 8:19 PM

You’re trying too hard.

Ugly on October 31, 2006 at 8:23 PM

I’ve heard the President butcher some words but I’ve never heard him make a gaffe that substantially and dramaticly changed the meaning of his statements.

This just makes my point. When these comments are placed in context with the speeches they are taken from only a complete idiot doesn’t understand the point he is making.

conservativecaveman on October 31, 2006 at 8:25 PM

Constantine, take a powder!
You’ve moved from accusing our troops of committing war crimes in Vietnam and Iraq to Bushisms?
This is substantive argument about policy and ideology?
(Believe it or not, the American people know what President Bush means; he has a connection with the silent majority of the American people (who are not so silent now that we have the web!).)

There’s only one word for you sheeple on the Left: Pathetic.
Oh, yeah…you Dimocrats are gonna win big next week. Uh-huh.

Vietnam veteran Steve Pitkin claims that John Kerry pressured him to lie in 1971 when he claimed U.S. soldiers engaged in atrocities during the Vietnam War.

“Our enemies are innovative and resourceful. And so are we. They never stop thinking of new ways to harm our country and our people. And neither do we.”

Constantine on October 31, 2006 at 8:19 PM

Full quote:

Third, this bill meets our commitment to America’s Armed Forces by preparing them to meet the threats of tomorrow. Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we. We must never stop thinking about how best to defend our country when we all must always be forward-thinking.

You know you are lyingm Con-thing.

As a matter of fact, John Kerry is being sued right now for uttering the very “murderers, rapists and torturists” (not terrorists) line that you have been so intent on denying that he ever said it here.

It ain’t spin, honey, the sonofabitch stated it under oath.

Some of us have been waiting for the deposition for over 30 years.

Somehow I don’t think that the Conperson here is going to bother reading the entire link, although it would add to that education that Kerry says he favors so highly.

The Machine on October 31, 2006 at 8:34 PM

Thanks for the link, Ugly.
Why don’t we quote the whole paragraph:

Congress also must understand they’ve got to pass an energy bill. You see, an energy bill will be good for jobs. An energy bill will be good for national security. We need an energy bill that encourages consumption [sic], encourages new technologies so our cars are cleaner, encourages new renewable energy sources, but at the same time encourages increase of supply here at home, so we’re less dependent on foreign sources of crude oil. (Applause.)

What’s the deal, Lefties? Do you want your President to promote an energy that discourages consumption? Doesn’t the market price pretty much do that?
I love to stay home. OK by me!

There’s just no pleasing you Dems–you move the goal posts so that you can carp and complain about everything Bush does, claiming that Democrats can do everything better once they’re back in power and yet all the electorate ever hears is “We have a plan…” without ever hearing what those plans are.
Kerry has yet to reveal the “plan for Iraq” that he claimed to have in 2004.

Jen the Neocon on October 31, 2006 at 8:37 PM

And there is no reason, Bob, that young American soldiers need to be going into the homes of Iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women, breaking sort of the customs of the–of–the historical customs, religious customs. Whether you like it or not–

Kerry Smart

TheBigOldDog on October 31, 2006 at 8:48 PM

Nice to see the Kerry “karisma” comes shining through again.

Insults to our troops aside, this is a tough pickle to get out of… tough enough that we may not see Lurch in the 2008 race.

GenFX on October 31, 2006 at 8:49 PM

BTW - What is wrong with the phrase ‘plenty smart’?

Ugly on October 31, 2006 at 8:56 PM

Short list of incredibly bad taste quotes from John F. Kerry:

“I personally didn’t see personal atrocities in the sense I saw somebody cut a head off or something like that. However, I did take part in free-fire zones, I did take part in harassment and interdiction fire, I did take part in search-and-destroy missions.”

“I have confidence in my campaign. I have assembled a great team that is going to beat George W. Bush, and any rumors to the contrary are completely erroneous. ”

“I know something about aircraft carriers for real.”

“I look forward to standing up and holding George Bush accountable for pushing seniors off of Medicare into HMOs.”

“I think there has been an exaggeration of the terrorist threat.”

“I would rather be the candidate of the NAACP than the NRA.”

“I’m an internationalist. I’d like to see our troops dispersed through the world only at the directive of the United Nations.”

“I’m fascinated by rap and by hip-hop. I think there’s a lot of poetry in it. There’s a lot of anger, a lot of social energy in it. And I think you’d better listen to it pretty carefully, ’cause it’s important.”

“More parents are teaching their children about embarrassment, about lying, about humiliation, about family hurt, and about public responsibility, than before we heard the name Monica Lewinsky.”

“President Clinton was often known as the first black president. I wouldn’t be upset if I could earn the right to be the second.”

“I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force if necessary to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security.”

“Saying there are weapons of mass destruction in iraq doesn’t make it so.”

“We have to get back to the place we were, where terrorists are not the focus of our lives, but they’re a nuisance.”

“What we need now is not just a regime change in Saddam Hussein and Iraq, but we need a regime change in the United States.”

–John F. Kerry

It’s not as if liberal Democrats disparaging the military is anything new. Quite the contrary. And it certainly isn’t anything new for John Kerry, no matter how much some people might want to pretend otherwise. Being anti-American is what first put him on the national stage, and you can count on someone with as few marketable skills as he has–besides marrying rich widows–to go with what he knows.

The thing is, I’m willing to bet that Kerry’s statement–whatever he intended to say–isn’t going to change any of our opinions of him. I already knew he was a pompous American-hating liberal asshole, and he will be whatever gaffes he does or doesn’t make.

Speaking as one of the troops, I can assure any doubters that we know exactly how most liberals think of us, and the feeling (contempt) is mutual. I welcome any and all current and former servicemembers to tell me I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure you won’t.

I never thought Kerry was smart. I never understood the claims that Kerry was bright and Bush was an idiot.

Bush earned higher grades from Harvard than Kerry did, and his comparative aptitude-IQ scores revealed that he was slightly above Kerry, and in the superior range.

How can lefties buy into the faux blue blood persona of Kerry, a dolt, a boring, monotone, irritating speaker, and a two faced liar and trouble maker?

Beats me.

As Chuck Norris’ character in the movie “Invasion USA” said to the bad guy, John “gigolo” Kerry, “If I wanted your opinion, I’d beat it out of you!”

The fact that Kerry is elected to the Senate indicates that the voters who elected him have very poor choice, and are not very smart.

William2006 on October 31, 2006 at 9:12 PM

Well, I am no fan of Jean Francois Kerry…

He represents what I despise in men and in liberals.

He married money–several times.
He got elected to a cushy all-expense-paid-lifetime-warranty job.
He is two-faced.
He can’t be trusted.
He is “nuanced”
etc,
etc.

HOWEVER, I believe his comment is not what it seems to be…I truly think he meant to slam Bush, not the troops on this one. Curiously, he is so “nuanced and complex” that he can’t make a simple joke. He just messed up his words. Which isn’t surprising given his performance in college.

So, does that let him off the hook? Mkay..NO.

Why?

Jean Francois Kerry voted many times for the war in Iraq.
Jean Francois Kerry rattled the “War in Iraq” sabre when Pres. Clintern (intentional misspelling…think about it, heh) was in office.

So, Kerry is all for the war when he doesn’t have to pay the political price. But when pay day comes…he jumps the fence. Disgusting.

Also, Jean Francois Kerry’s record on smearing the military speaks for itself. Even if this joke went awry, his past conduct and words are more than enough to demonstrate his disdain for better men and women.

He always was a has-been. The only reason Lurch is even on our TV’s is because of the mosquito infested state of MA… (I hiked the Appalachian Trail and it goes thru MA and let me tell you, the sqeeters are as thick as the liberals in that state, only less annoying and much less bloodsucking).

Montana on October 31, 2006 at 9:24 PM

Kerry doesn’t have to work at this. He screws up, and he has the media and bottom feeders like Kos to carry his water for him. He can sail on, looking faux-presidential…still waving his “war hero” credentials for all to see.

…and I apologize to halibut and catfish the world over for the “bottom feeders” remark…the comparison puts them in a bad light.
