Kerry responds to right-wing chickenhawk “nut-jobs”; Update: Source says comments were a joke gone wrong

We have ourselves a meltdown.

Senator John Kerry issued the following statement in response to White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, assorted right wing nut-jobs, and right wing talk show hosts desperately distorting Kerry’s comments about President Bush to divert attention from their disastrous record:

“If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they’re crazy. This is the classic G.O.P. playbook. I’m sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did.

I’m not going to be lectured by a stuffed suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium, or doughy Rush Limbaugh, who no doubt today will take a break from belittling Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s disease to start lying about me just as they have lied about Iraq. It disgusts me that these Republican hacks, who have never worn the uniform of our country lie and distort so blatantly and carelessly about those who have…

Bottom line, these Republicans want to debate straw men because they’re afraid to debate real men…”

There’s more. The nutroots will eat this up with a spoon, of course, but you almost have to pity the poor bastards at the DNC. This is the last thing they want to be talking about this week. Score one more for Lurch’s famous political acumen.

What’s got him so agitated this morning, anyway? Bennett knows.

One of those Republicans who never can be found to serve in war and have never worn the uniform — namely, John McCain — will, I hear, be addressing Kerry’s comments at 1 p.m. We’ll have video.

Update: Here’s a snippet of video of what Tony Snow had to say at the daily press briefing. I’ll post the full transcript once it’s available.

More from Snow:

Snow said the quote “fits a pattern” of negative remarks from Kerry about U.S. soldiers and suggested that whether Democratic candidates — particularly those running on their military service backgrounds — agree with their 2004 standard-bearer should be a campaign litmus test…

Snow said a lot of Americans have joined the military since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

“As for the notion that you can say this sort of thing about the troops and say you support them, it’s interesting,” the press secretary said.

Update: CNN’s run the Kerry clip a good four or five times within the past hour. Gotta give them some credit here, especially after the Juan Williams post this morning.

Update: Greg Tinti takes a video stroll down memory lane with Waffles.

Update: Waffles responds with a bravura performance guaranteed to delight nutroots members young and old. He didn’t mean that the troops are lazy and uneducated when he implied the troops are lazy and uneducated; he meant that Bush’s policy in Iraq is broken. Also, Iraq is Vietnam and Republicans are chickenhawks who can’t admit their mistakes and are constantly changing the subject. In contrast to “real men” like him, who … can’t admit their mistakes and are constantly changing the subject.

Oh, and Republicans have a “cut and run” strategy in Afghanistan. Says the guy who brought a resolution to the Senate floor calling for withdrawal from Iraq by the end of the year.

All in all, though, surprisingly shrewd. The nutroots will be wanking to this for days, and since he can’t run to the right of Hillary or Obama, this at least gives him a shot to outflank Gore on the left in ‘08. Whereupon he’ll be promptly torpedoed in the primaries.

Update: Vets for Freedom has called upon Kerry to apologize.

Update: Are soldiers really less educated than the rest of the population?

Update: Escalation — CNN reports that Bush will comment on Kerry’s remarks at 5 p.m.

Update: Bill Frist gets off the line of the day:

While America’s servicemen and women are fighting and dying against our adversaries in the global War on Terror, John Kerry has the gall to criticize their intelligence, their education, and their motivation for service. His comments represent the absolute worst in Democrat scare tactics and present a grave insult to our all-volunteer Armed Forces.

Senator Kerry clearly owes an apology to our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines serving in Iraq. But Mr. Kerry has refused to do so. Instead, he’s claiming that Republicans are “desperately distorting” his comments. Watch the video yourself … it is perfectly clear what Mr. Kerry said … what’s unclear is whether Mr. Kerry ever means what he says. Perhaps he was against his comments before he actually made them.

Update: You’ve got to be kidding.

A source close to Kerry tells NBC News that he was trying to make a “tough and honest joke” about Bush and that in the process he omitted two words which changed the intended meaning. Per the source, Kerry meant to say that he can’t “overstress the importance of a great education” and that “if you don’t study, if you aren’t smart, if you’re intellectually lazy… You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq.” Kerry mistakenly dropped the “getting us” from his initial remarks.

Update: Via Slublog, you’ve got to be kidding — part II.

Yes, I know that, but still, you linked to Truthout. This is the same rag that claimed Rove was already behind bars over the Plamegate scandal (though lying about Rove was only one of many, many mistakes this site has made). You would have lended more credibility to your claim if you’d linked to the National Enquirer.

And you want me to cite my reference? I already told you it was Wilson. You don’t believe he said it, is that the question?

My proof is the Intelligence Report.

The reports officer said that a “good” grade was merited because the information responded to at least some of the outstanding questions in the Intelligence Community, but did not provide substantial new information. He said he judged that the most important fact in the report was that the Nigerien officials admitted that the Iraqi delegation had traveled there in 1999, and that the Nigerien Prime Minister believed the Iraqis were interested in purchasing uranium, because this provided some confirmation of foreign government service reporting.

Of course later the report admits that little could possibly be gained from Wilson anyway as no one would openly admit to engaging in an act of war against the United States unless willing to go to war.

(U) DIA and CIA analysts said that when they saw the intelligence report they did not believe that it supplied much new information and did not think that it clarified the story on the alleged Iraq-Niger uranium deal. They did not find Nigerien denials that they had discussed uranium sales with Iraq as very surprising because they had no expectation that Niger would admit to such an agreement if it did exist. The analysts did, however, find it interesting that the former Nigerien Prime Minister said an Iraqi delegation had visited Niger for what he believed was to discuss uranium sales.

But again, as it says repeatedly in the report, Wilson’s report confirmed several times over that Iraq wanted to buy nuke components from Niger and actually met with official in Niger for that very purpose.

Why would anyone believe that John Kerry insulted our troops just because in the past he called them murderers, rapists, torturers, terrorists, and compared them to Ghengis Khan?
Anyone who thinks he would insult our troops must be nuts? Anyone who thinks that has been paying attention and has an attention span greater than thet of a goldfish.
What a frickin’ idiot.

DrEvil on October 31, 2006 at 4:11 PM

I don’t know why people think this hurts Kerry’s chances to get the ‘rat nomination in 2008. He got where he is by trashing US soldiers. It’s been the catalyst for his success in the Democrat party – can you think of anything else he did to achieve his high political standing? – and he’s not going to stop doing it any time soon.

Perchant on October 31, 2006 at 4:11 PM

If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they’re crazy.

So lets parse this statement:

1) I’m a veteran
2) I criticized the troops
3) because I criticized them in a clumsy way, I have to call them heros
4) I wanted to criticized the president, but forgot to mention him when I criticized the troops.
5) anyone who doesn’t understand me is crazy.

was that what his response was aiming for?

Canadian Imperialist Running Dog on October 31, 2006 at 4:12 PM

Soooo, he was talking to students about the importance education before he was talking to students on the importance of education?

It’s liberal fact that they believe soldiers are mindless robots, I’ve seen it with my own two eyes.

And this douche, who had a cup of tea in the military, is now slamming the ENTIRE MILITARY and then hiding behind his medals.

What a dickhead. Everyone knows exactly what you meant Lurch.

benrand on October 31, 2006 at 4:14 PM

Yet another Kerry flip-flop:

In his press conference just minutes ago he stated the troops deserved a winning strategy — this after having previously called for their withdrawal by the end of the year. Just to make it clear: withdrawal is not a strategy, let alone a winning one.

Kerry: ““If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they’re crazy. This is the classic G.O.P. playbook. I’m sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did.”

Well, count me among the Crazy because I distinctly remember John Kerry The Vietnam War Veteran castigating the one million plus US combat veterans of Vietnam as having routinely committed atrocities “in a manner reminiscent of Genghis Khan.” Kerry testified before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations that U.S. soldiers boasted about raping, dismembering, torturing, poisoning, and randomly executing innocent civilians. Outside the Senate chambers he maintained that war crimes were the norm in America’s war in Vietnam with full knowledge and endorsement by the full chain of our military.

So Kerry’s lame defense is a false appeal to his shaky authority as a veteran, an authority he trashed with lies during his war protests. In other words, Kerry would call his military comrades from Vietnam sick, twisted, war criminals who delighted in bloody murder, but he wants us to believe he would draw the line at calling our troops stupid and uneducated.

It’s the classic liberal playbook. If you are caught with your pants down, go on the attack against your righteous critics until you figure out something better.

I say we slow roast Kerry on the spit of public condemnation until he is well done.

(just in case Connie or Honey or any other Leftist apologists are listening….)

***ANOTHER VETERAN WITH ABSOLUTE MORAL AUTHORITY RISES TO SPEAK***

(there…per your poster boy, I now have a right to an opinion….)

Kerry rounds on those who point out his faux-pas to attack…which naturalists and exterminators tell me is what a rat is wired to do when he’s cornered….

MAKE NO MISTAKE: this man speaks for *LARGE* swaths of the Left. Clinton dissembles, Kusinich chants, this guy just goes ahead and unrolls his soul.

What some may style as “honesty” is, in fact, monumental arrogance. After all…who’d *DARE* hold him accountable! He’s Senator John KERRY, by thunder, and how *DAST* anyone question his words, actions or intentions! They flow from the pristine wellspring of his aristocratic soul, after all….

(…stops typing to fight gag reflex….)

1) I heard the words that came out of his mouth. If it was a failed jibe, apologize for an utterance which could be misconstrued. *Normal* people, who remember their manners, do that all the time. Folks on the Right — Lott, for instance — have to do it all the time.

2) I am not given to read what is written on men’s hearts. That is given to someone with slightly more time in grade than I have. So, I can only judge a man from what he says and does.

3) He may have *MEANT* to side-swipe Mr. Bush and his “failed” policies in Iraq, but he ended up — in very plain, clear English — telling folks that if you don’t study and apply yourself, you’ll end up in Iraq.

4) 4-year-olds use the “I didn’t *MEAN* to do/say that.”.

“I didn’t *MEAN* to break that vase. I was just playing baseball in the parlor”. “I didn’t *MEAN* to hurt the puppy. I just wanted to give him a ride in the dryer.” “I didn’t *MEAN* to slander all my Vietnam veteran comrades. I just wanted to point out what murderous, knuckle-dragging, imperialist stooges they are.”

5) He’s approaching what, the 59th anniversary of his 4th birthday?

6) His screed was the most shameful, execrable, reprehensible display of arrogance since the Left lined up to convince us that *EVERYONE* commits adultery…and then lies about it….

…AGAIN, MAKE NO MISTAKE: this is a window into the soul of the Democratic Party today. They excommunicate dissent (e.g., Lieberman), they blame the messenger when they don’t like the message, they think that our military — which, even given the veteran moonbats who’re running nowadays, is still overwhelmingly mainstream conservative — is an inbred vestige of Vietnam, they cry racism as they throw oreos at blacks who don’t toe the party line, and they genuinely *DESPISE* the country as currently constituted.

Now…after all of this, the few wingnuts who show up (again, Connie and Honey and the usual suspects) will begin to rant about how, if “their guy” is bad, that “our guy” is so very much worse. I don’t intend to reply myself. You can’t have a meeting-of-the-minds with anyone whose mind is welded shut.

Kerry *IS* the Democratic Party today. He was their last “standard bearer”, and shares an anti-American pedigree with many movers-and-shakers in the Supreme Soviet of his misbegotten party.

…to think that this is the party of Hubert Humphrey and “Scoop” Jackson….

***VETERAN HAS LEFT THE BUILDING/MOONBATS MAY RESUME QUOTING SEDITIOUS LEFT-WING TRIPE AS TRUTH. HAVE A NICE DAY***

Kerry was right. If you don’t have a degree, you can’t find a job in this country that pays more than $10/hr. I don’t know, my friend…

Money talks. I heard Glenn Beck report last night that almost ALL the major news show’s ratings have gone down in the past month. All but just a few, that is, (Beck’s show is one of the ones that’s surging).

That goes for newspapers as well. The People have figured out that the MSM simply can’t be trusted. At some point business will take over and demand changes from within. If nothing else, I believe they’ll do it in order to compete with Fox News. That’s what al-cnn did with Beck’s show. They’ve got a monster hit on their hands with his show, and I’m sure they have no idea what to do with it and are completely mistified by its success.

Eventually, little by little, the media will turn on the dems. Talk about entertaining TV! I tell ya, the MSM is missing a GREAT opportunity right now.

Gee… didn’t work that way for me. I’m self-educated (thank God for Public Libraries and bookstores!) and didn’t get to go to college because I needed to work to survive. And I make a hell of a lot more than $10 and hour. And even when times were toughest, I NEVER tried to collect unemployment. I got off my ass and got a job and made things work. That’s what Americans do.

Take the initiative and learn and work and become what you want to be. Simple as that.

Republicans join the Military, go overseas, experience the world and learn to appriciate their country even more than they already did, then come home and go to college, become C.E.O.s or business owners.

Democrats go to college, learn how to operate a beer bong, then get a job at McDonalds and live with their parents til they’re 40 and blame it all on Republicans.

Well, its Halloween, and Lurch had to show up sometime.

Seeing as how Flipper has maligned Rush, let’s see what Rush has to say about Kerry’s comments

And this should be Kerry’s refusal to apologize to the troops. Rush is having a ball with it.

“…unwilling to give them the Humvees that they deserve to protect themselves…”

What the fuck is he talking about?

Christoph on October 31, 2006 at 8:48 PM

Heh. So, it’s either an honest statement demonstrating Kerry’s utter contempt for the military, or it’s a Fruedian slip demonstrating Kerry’s utter contempt for the military.

What a winner.

I think I have made the first observation that on the main YouTube video of this thing, it took 7 hours for the first person to say that Kerry meant Bush.

VinceP1974 on October 31, 2006 at 9:45 PM

It truly disgusts me to hear horse face talk about “wearing the uniform” when he was nothing short of anti-American every day he, himself, wore the uniform. This self-righteous, arrogant gas-bag doesn’t deserve to be called “American”.

thedecider on October 31, 2006 at 10:01 PM

I am sure Senator Kerry has a vast collection of books on French philosopers, but he would be better served by reading a bit from America’s great philospher, Mark Twain. Especially useful to him would be the following bit of advice from Mr. Twain.

“It is better to remain silent, and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt.”

oldscouter on October 31, 2006 at 10:24 PM

The pompous ass was actually saying what he meant. That’s why he won’t offer any apology to anyone. Like the rest of his elitist liberal friends, they look down upon anyone who “gets stuck” in the armed forces.

It was really sad to see Alan Colmes try to explain away Kerry’s “joke gone bad.”

JayVee on October 31, 2006 at 10:56 PM

something about the “kerry was obviously referring to bush” spin which needs to be slapped down hard is the “obviously” part.

progressives have been doing battle with the institution of an all volunteer military since mid 2003, branding it early on as a “poverty draft”.

the battle became formalized and physical with the so-called “counter-recruiting” movement and tactics developed by the afsc. this gave members of the media and pundits a means to newsify their agenda against our armed forces. when counter-recruiters were active, any seasonal dip in recruiting numbers were eagerly promoted through alarmist news items.

but two years of examination disproved the assertion that counter-recruiters presented any real effect on recruiting numbers. the media elites’ explaination for this phenomenon has been to reaffirrm their base conciet that the only type of person capable of military duty is stupid by issuing news items asserting that the military has lowered its recruiting standards.

a google search of “lowering” “recruiting” “standards” results in thousands of hits from both the mainstream and leftwing activist media:

http://www.slate.com/id/2127487/ (uses the term “dumbing down” to describe new recruits)
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15197832/
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines05/1004-01.htm
etc.

other terms may be as effective. the point is that the leftwing conciet that military servicemembers are charictarized by intellectual inferiority, and that it is the noble concern of decent people that the military is the leading predator of our nation’s stupid, is one which is profligate and comfortably shared amongst the left.

in stark contradiction of the notion that kerry “obviously” could not have meant the troops, it is in fact unlikely that he intended to convey otherwise. his message was not meant, to his thinking, with wanton malice. rather his intention was to spur his audience to moral action – to strengthen education as an alternative to the predatory appeals of military service.

of course, a shorter route to disproving kerry’s spin is to try to parse bush into kerry’s statement:

“education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you [may become a president who get's our country] stuck in Iraq.”

i mean, honestly.

In reading the posts on the left wing blogs and MSM sites I am struck by the utter contempt and hate that spews from them. While you do see some of that here and on other blogs like HA it is not nearly as prevelent or as mean. As Michelle so rightly points out in her latest book the left has become completely unhinged. They are dragging out all of the old long since debunked lies about President Bush, and republicans in general, avoiding for the most part any substansive statements on the Kerry quotes all the while accusing republicans of trying to change the subject. I truly fear what could become of our great country if these people actually regain the power they desire. Endless, pointless and wasteful investigation into allegations that have already been disproven. Weakness shown on a front where none can be tolerated. A ruined economy and a weakened military when our country will least be able to afford either.
As poor a job as you might think the republicans have done the democrats would be far worse. No direction, no plan, and only surrender. Truly a nightmare of unprecidented proportion. This is why we must vote. This is why we can not trust the democrats with real power again. They are no longer morally fit to govern.

conservativecaveman on October 31, 2006 at 11:45 PM

caveman, you know what they’re doing with those hateswarms?

they’re practicing recall. they’re sharing and memorizing their memetic arsenal. its ugly, but there’s a utility to it.

jummy on October 31, 2006 at 11:49 PM

Volunteer to get out the vote!!!

sonnyspats1 on November 1, 2006 at 2:24 AM

Is THIS the october surprise?

Its like the more recent remake of the LadyKillers– the criminals killed themselves off with their own idiocy.

Damn it, what happened to our loyal opposition?

RiverCocytus on November 1, 2006 at 8:09 AM

Holy Donkey do Batman, the Joker is on the loose again…. John Kerry does kinda look like the old Joker…. maybe he is…

I noticed that GregH has not said anything. What about it GregH?

GmanPsycho on October 31, 2006 at 3:59 PM

He did link to this post on Hot Air from this webpage. Here’s the small mention of it:

The Kerry Distortion – watch the events unfold.

I believe that sums up GregH’s opinion; that Kerry’s “joke” was distorted and he was innocent ro something.

As for the “botched joke” and my opinion on it, I believe that if it really was a joke (botched or not), it’s sick and it’s further proof Kerry’s lack of class. I believe he believes what he said. I, and it’s sad if that’s actually true. And any apology he offers (even if he speaks it) won’t do any good. At least that’s how I see it.

By the way, did he apologize for accusing the troops of “going into the homes of Iraqis in the dead of night terrorizing kids and children, uh, uh, uh, y’know, women, breaking sort of the customs of the–uh, uh, uh, of, of, of, uh, historical customs, religious customs, whether you like it or not, Iraqis should be doing that.” from almost a year ago on CBS’s “Face the Nation”?
