Video: Air America co-creator “enjoys” Vent

posted at 12:09 am on October 26, 2006 by Allahpundit

From tonight’s edition of Brian Lehrer Live, a local cable show here in NYC. One of the two guests is Shelley Lewis, author of “Naked Republicans” and co-creator of none other than Air America Radio.

The other guest you know.

Smells like … victory.

KP is one classy liberal. She’s about 15 years late to the party, though, I think.

DaveS on October 26, 2006 at 12:20 AM

I see a strong wind of change on the horizon, and it’s called “The Vent”! This is the future folks.

thedecider on October 26, 2006 at 12:24 AM

Hehe, she just keeps inching closer and closer. Maybe if we “accidentally” leave the door open to the conservative side and walk away for a few minutes, she’ll wander in by mistake.

Benaiah on October 26, 2006 at 12:24 AM

Shelley sounded like she liked the idea a bit too much. Please tell me we aren’t going to see a copycat liberal site, that we’ll have to watch the MSM pump up while it goes down the toilet like Air America. It’s not just the medium folks, it’s the message.

Quiet, we don’t want to scare her off… I’m thinking of leaving a trail of granola, weed, and tofu leading up to a box being propped up with a stick. Liberals can’t resist that stuff. When she goes in the box and trips that stick, THEN we’ve got her. But I don’t think she’ll just wander in on her own. Of course there’s another possibility. I could be an idiot for having just typed all of that.

It is the message, indeed. Air America failed because they could not attract an audience for their brand of diatribe. We are the majority.

thedecider on October 26, 2006 at 12:28 AM

Air America failed because they never bothered to understand the talk radio industry before trying to build a talk radio network. And because with PBSABCNBCCBS there’s really no need for a liberal network. There are already scads of them.

Bryan on October 26, 2006 at 12:33 AM

Naw… you all don’t get it….

Liberals become conservative by backing into it…. because they are backing away from the Nuts out there on the far left…. and keep backing… and backing… until they look around and realize that they have become conservative…

RightWinged on October 26, 2006 at 12:25 AM

I think more than anything else, it’s the way the message is presented. We have liberals on HA that, for the most part, present their view in a calm manner, and (for the most part) they’re responded to in the same way. The liberal mindset is to attack, attack, attack anything or anybody that doesn’t agree with them. If you’re a liberal, you must agree with certain basic facts to be ‘accepted’. Conversely, the conservative mindset is much more one of reasoned discourse (with a few exceptions, of course).

And the success of HA is due largely to mgmt expelling anybody that needs to viciously attack others.

But I think you’re right, AP, KP is just about there.

And if you ever decide to incorporate and sell shares in HotAir Networks LLC…

I’ve always enjoyed Shelly Lewis’ hand puppet, Lampchop. I’ve also enjoyed Glenn Geenwald’s sock puppet. That’s how I roll.

It’s probably work with Rosie — just don’t forget to arm the leghold trap though.

Not to be critical of your comment…however, her bio states that she grew up in Alaska and she’s stated that she’s comfortable with firearms as her father taught her how to shoot.

I’m thinking maybe venison. Evoke childhood memories.

While I suspect this comment was stated in humor, I will attest from personal experience that there is much truth in your statement. Although I would edit to read “…backing away from the Nuts out there on the far left and the Clintons…” But then, maybe ‘far left and Clintons’ is being redundant.

Did this clown Brian think that the Hot Air Vents were something new or was he just commenting on the (hopefully) weekly Friday Vent? I guess he may be new to the party. Everytime I see KP I think she’s probably the nicest lib out there.

Catie96706 on October 26, 2006 at 3:41 AM

She is one of those liberal who say, “I wish I could think big like them.”

Ouabam on October 26, 2006 at 3:57 AM

Uh oh, AP forgot to mention that KP is very pretty! It’s some kind of HotAir law, I don’t know the details.

Kevin M on October 26, 2006 at 4:48 AM

Air America failed because they never bothered to understand the talk radio industry before trying to build a talk radio network.

Because they started out of the gate with a massive, nationwide radio network from day 1. Because they blew through tons of financing to promote and pay for big name hosts, facilities, and frequencies from day one. Because they never bothered to pay attention to what potential listeners thought of their programming, instead shoving Randy Rhodes down their throats.

Because they know better what people want to hear. They know that people just can’t flip over to another station to hear a view opposing Elder, Medved, Hewitt, Limbaugh, etc.

And what they found is that, yes, people can find other views on other stations and get them without having to listen to BDS and conspiracy theories while driving to/from the office.

In this case I think that 15 years too late means she’s actually ahead of her time.

KP reminds me of Tammy Bruce and her even handed approach to subjects that require THOUGHT, as well as feeling. Strident and bitchy may get you heard, but it won’t gain you any respect.

seejanemom on October 26, 2006 at 7:37 AM

KP reminds me of Tammy Bruce in that she is even handed and thoughtful “liberal” without being reactionary and hysterical. Strident and bitchy (Rosie) may get your voice heard, but it won’t gain you any respect.

seejanemom on October 26, 2006 at 7:42 AM

georgej, you’re right, KP is actually unique and different than your run of the mill lib… I want to clarify that my comment about granola, weed, etc. was a deliberately over the top liberal stereotype… However if you lived up here (Vermont) you’d understand that it’s quite accurate. But seriously, I don’t mean to really imply KP is one of these types by any means… I was sort of going the extra mile on “luring” a liberal as some elusive creature we were trying to “trap”.

RightWinged on October 26, 2006 at 8:21 AM

Mallard, your comment pretty much sums up my transition to the conservative side as well. I mean, I actually voted for him in 1992.

I do my penance by forcing myself to go to KO’s and ThinkProgress to see what I may have been.

BacaDog on October 26, 2006 at 8:41 AM

Air America failed because they never bothered to understand the talk radio industry before trying to build a talk radio network.

I think it’s simpler than that. Air America failed because there wasn’t a market for it. Maybe there will be some day, but not in 2005-2006.

It’s not that they don’t understand the talk radio industry; they don’t understand capitalism. It’s a much more fundamental disconnect.

Enrique on October 26, 2006 at 9:47 AM

If I could quote myself…

Enrique on October 26, 2006 at 9:48 AM

Air America failed because no one wants to listen to left wing radio.

Ratings, ratings, ratings. You’ve got ‘em, or you don’t. If you’ve got ‘em, you’ve got advertisers.

AA had neither. No ratings, no cash flow, no future. Oh, and no talent. Buh bye, so sad, so sorry.

Pablo on October 26, 2006 at 10:02 AM

Yeah, KP is pretty, but what’s the deal with her makeup? Sometimes her base looks OK, but other times it’s like Pablo Picasso did her face. Wierd.

But she’s smart not to parrot the Donk talking points. The mere REALIZATION that no one’s listening to Dean-speak puts her ahead of the rest of the pack. (Which is a good thing, because if you’re not at the head of the pack, your …ahem……VIEW doesn’t change much. :)

Left_Behind on October 26, 2006 at 10:18 AM

I’m reminded of the famous C.S. Lewis quote that he was “…dragged screaming and kicking into the kingdom of God.” His supremely rational and objective mind eventually forced him to face eternal realities.

The libs who become conservatives are forced by rational thought to accept the success of conservative principles. It doesn’t have any eternal consequences but it puts an end to the internal cognitive dissonance that all libs have to live with.

LOL. I guess living in a conservative state, though polarized small town because the National Outdoor Leadership School headquarters is here makes that funny to me. The NOLS students are referred to as “Nolsies” around here and most of the time you can smell them before you even see them :) As funny as that is to type … I’m completely serious — their BO can make you throw up in your mouth a little.

wytammic on October 26, 2006 at 10:45 AM

“Annoying” doesn’t sell.

Discussing a topic without raising your voice, ranting or shouting down an opposing opinion works and sells.

Which is why the Libs will never have anything comparable “Vent”‘s Vlogging Vixens!

Jack.

Jack Deth on October 26, 2006 at 10:57 AM

KP is one classy liberal.

Agreed. When Carville, etc. come on TV, I dive for the mute button.

When KP comes on, I cut the volume up.

She listens to us, without throwing things. I can listen to her.

dinasour on October 26, 2006 at 11:16 AM

Wow, Until today, I never realized you could find the words “classy” and “liberal” in the same sentence.

Benthoven on October 26, 2006 at 11:32 AM

I think we may misunderstand our friend KP. She’s not slowly “going conservative”. She gets heard by conservatives though because she is respectful and willing to listen to alternate points of view. It’s the lost(and sorely missed) art of mutually respectful dialogue that is a strong suite in her rhetorical arsenal. She puts it to good use in discussions with those whose opinions differ from her own. Many on both sides would do well to follow her example.

Rosie O’Donnell immediately comes to mind as someone who could stand to take a cue from Ms. Powers’ conversational affect…

“I’m thinking of leaving a trail of granola, weed, and tofu leading up to a box being propped up with a stick.”

I think weed and KP sounds like a great combination. Mmm.

She’s not ready to be a conservative yet, by any means, but once you start listening to conservatives, instead of just screaming at them, it’s easy to become swayed by the force of the ideas–not to mention the fact that most of what liberals are pushing comes from premises which were once part of some propaganda campaign. For example, Michael J. Fox’s “Republicans are against cures for Parkinson’s” ad, would calcify into an axiomatic truth about Republicans–”Well, you know, everybody knows the Republicans hate people with disabilities.” Someone like KP wouldn’t fall for that kind idiocy, and the more the libs push that kind of thing, the more she’s going to find herself objecting to them and their tactics. So ultimately, I’m agreeing with the “backing into conservatism by backing away (in horror) from liberalism” idea mentioned above. Hey, it worked for me. I voted Gore in ’00 (the year, not his IQ), and Bush in ’04.

smellthecoffee on October 26, 2006 at 1:43 PM

I’m just grateful that there are some sane Democrat pundits out there.

It feels like the entire dem-o-left movement has been taken control of people that love to talk and agree about how evil Bush&Co are. And thanks to the internet and media in general, they turn into this giant windtunnel where all you can hear is varying degrees of BDS.

I’m of the opinion we need a strong, sane and sober Dem party in addition to the Repubs. For, you know… balance, maybe.

BTW, Creator of Worlds, does KP actually read the comments here?

Kai on October 26, 2006 at 5:17 PM

I’m glad The Vent is getting positive reviews.

If it was men doing The Vent, instead of these ladies, it would be treated much differently by the left/moderate media.

But then again, real men probably don’t watch The View and have no real reason to do something like The Vent.

The Vent really is a great forum for the “Real Ladies” out there needing a voice to contrast the nutty women on The View.

Lawrence on October 26, 2006 at 5:39 PM

No doubt about it. From the first time I saw her she had me at ‘Hello’. She did a good job here. Seemed a little subdued to me when she did her first Vent but as a feloow said above she is a respectful debater and she’s wise a t feeling her way into the conversational topics.

I went over and watched the whole segment on them and what I thought was funny is that Leher said that the AA gal gave him his first “air job”. Whoaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Now wait a second. WTH did he mean by that?????Bwhahahahahahahahaha
