A good man. Not a man we can afford to vote for, but a good man.
The video comes from WTNH in Connecticut.
Update: With the Freshmaker behind by double digits and facing a war chest shortfall of $4 million, the Times presses the panic button.

I’d vote for him! If I lived there.
Alex K on October 24, 2006 at 1:43 AM
What, are conservatives supposed to risk Lamont getting into office? I’d vote for Lieberman before DeWine anyday.
Theworldisnotenough on October 24, 2006 at 1:50 AM
Oops. Allah meant the republican… Where’s my face?
Theworldisnotenough on October 24, 2006 at 1:53 AM
Was Ned shading his eyes, or saluting?
yo on October 24, 2006 at 1:54 AM
Wow. Finally someone shouts back. Being fair though, Lamont probably would have stood up too if he could have climbed off that stool by himself. Pretty sure he had help to get up there before the cameras were rolling.
Something I noticed though. If you watch, there are 2 times during the disruption when Lamont puts his hand to his forehead to look in the audience in an obvious, “Do I know them, they sound familiar.” move.

What was the moonbat singing?
Valiant on October 24, 2006 at 2:08 AM
I thought Stephanopolous was a bit pissed and secretly wanted to say,
Christoph on October 24, 2006 at 2:18 AM
It looks like he lost his temper a bit. Class looks good on him though. Joe too.
I couldn’t get the moonbat’s words either. That was a song?
Axe on October 24, 2006 at 2:19 AM
The blues. Lamont is going to get waxed and the moonbats can’t do anything about it. They cope by acting like whiny children: “Free speech for me, but not for thee”
At least the empty suit had the courtesy to clap a few times when Schlesinger came to Joe Lieb’s defense.
Mallard T. Drake on October 24, 2006 at 2:19 AM
Well according to this

William Amos on October 24, 2006 at 2:20 AM
Poor Ned had to sit on his hands, knowing they were his supporters. Can’t hardly start screaming at your own staff while they heckle the competetition at a debate.
Heh. I am going to love laughing at these weenies on Wednesday morning.
Jaibones on October 24, 2006 at 2:26 AM
Hope Schlesingeris running against Chris Dodd when he is up for re election next time
William Amos on October 24, 2006 at 2:32 AM
The bad thing is even without Ned Lamont running as the Dem’s choice the Republican Party never planned on spending a dime in the state to help this good man’s campaign. If they lose this election it’s because they forgot which party they belong to and what the American people are truly interested in.
jasoneverts on October 24, 2006 at 2:50 AM
I mean nationwide not in Conn.
jasoneverts on October 24, 2006 at 2:50 AM
Lamont stream of consciousness: Another moron…have to create plausible deniability…FireDogWho? Intern… No wait, the audience is turning…frown for the camera…yes, I strongly disapprove…now, sing louder, nutjob…I’m trailing by double digits!…No, no…not working…Ack! Republicans scary…should I get mad too?…too late…stupid Kos diarist…now I look fringe and impotent…I’m so screwed…
John on October 24, 2006 at 3:33 AM
I’m gonna enjoy seeing Hamster’s head explode on that Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. And how cool would it be if Lieberman said something like “Thanks, Jane. Couldn’t have done it without you” in his victory speech? Well, a boy can dream…
Sean M. on October 24, 2006 at 4:52 AM
Lamont, Lieberman, Schlesinger…..
See No Evil, Speak No Evil, Kick Evil’s Ass.
Lieberman’s wimpy response, IMHO, is proof that he’s been in Congress for far too long. What was it with the body language and that grade school response of “Let the candidate’s speak and let the audience hear”?
Notice is was a Republican who stood up for the “little guy” first while the Democrat sat on his hands wondering what to do.

I watched the debate. And honestly, Alan won me over. I’m not voting for him, because he has no chance. But he brought the funny and he made good points. The chanting and singing were a bunch of LaRouchies. It sounded like they were singing something in German, which would have been particularly nasty in my opinion. I found an article at The Day (New London) that said it was a standard LaRouche crowd of nutbags.
AP, did you watch or just grab the video? If anyone watched, let me ask you, did Joe Lieberman remind you of George H. W. Bush circa 1992? He came across as cranky, irritable and not happy to be there. Which is not a good way to be when facing the voters.
Ennuipundit on October 24, 2006 at 7:18 AM
That’s the diversity loving, free-speech loving, open-minded, intellectual Left for you. They are always trying to silence people with whom they disagree.
You just know Lamont was secretly cheering for the disrespectful Leftist agitator. If he had any political savvy at all he would have been the one to step forward and defend Lieberman.
TheBigOldDog on October 24, 2006 at 7:24 AM
Liberals continue to make republicans look good. Nothing new there.
I’m not totally sold on the idea of abandoning the republican candidate. Not at all.
DannoJyd on October 24, 2006 at 7:46 AM
Last line:
Of course not.
CrankyNeocon on October 24, 2006 at 7:51 AM
Thats seriously the type of thing you would expect at a HS debate.
EnochCain on October 24, 2006 at 7:52 AM
Were those hecklers wearing brown shirts and armbands?
Hening on October 24, 2006 at 8:13 AM
Such leadership appeals to both men and Democrats alike.
Heh.
wordwarp on October 24, 2006 at 8:13 AM
I think this clip epitomizes how we as a society have become too polite. We’re so brought up these days to not be offensive, to let others have their say, etc., that when we’re faced with incredible rudeness we don’t know what to do because we don’t want to be rude ourselves.
Tolerance is all well and good, in its place, but when our tolerance becomes the means by which we allow others to tread all over us, it it no longer a useful component of society.
The right needs a bit more of this sort of attitude…the left is using the right’s fundamental courtesy by pulling stunts like this, and we should not tolerate it.
Bob's Kid on October 24, 2006 at 8:41 AM
Schlesinger ‘08,
if he would have only said come up here so I can kick your ass.
DarianCounts on October 24, 2006 at 9:19 AM
So I guess they were there for the AC and the snack bar?
Doesn’t matter. News Channel 8 can paint it any way they’d like. There guy is still going home.
(… please don’t be right wing please don’t be right wing)
Axe on October 24, 2006 at 9:33 AM
Nevermind. Forgot about William Amos’ post. In this case, I’m sure they were not anyone’s supporters.
(*their, not there, above)
Axe on October 24, 2006 at 9:35 AM
Nothing at all wrong with a politician losing his temper when the time is right; it makes them all the more human. And it looked like Schlesinger was truly angry; I think it made him look like a stand-up guy.
dalewalt on October 24, 2006 at 9:56 AM
I’m with Ennuipundit, Schlesinger also won me over but at the same time I cannot hand my vote over to the Lamont socialist…..it’s a chance we cannot take. As a Connecticut resident, my vote will be going to Joe Lieberman.
My first thought on the “Brown Shirt” hecklers was that they were the moveon.org, “Kos” and Lamont Kidz. (I still think that they were)
Dina on October 24, 2006 at 10:10 AM
Just another example of free speech being suppressed by the creepy fascist Rethuglican junta.
Insh’allah.
Enrique on October 24, 2006 at 10:11 AM
A far cry from the “I’m paying for this microphone!” indignant Reagan response.
infidel4life on October 24, 2006 at 10:20 AM
Schlesinger ‘08, for something. The GOP cannot let a good man go to waste.
If it all comes down to 49 Dems – 50 Reps, and Chaffee shows his real colors and jumps ship, what do you think Joe Lieberman, the independent would do? Vote for Reid or Frist? I think the answer would likely disappoint the Democrats, but I wouldn’t want to bet my country on it.
Mike O on October 24, 2006 at 10:38 AM
I bet Lieberman just lost a lot of votes. What a whiny, sulky, wimpy, indecisive response! He looked like he was about to break out in tears.
It is a sad state of affairs when Republicans are rooting for a liberal, Lieberman, to win. Isn’t it odd how some conservatives are upset at President Bush for not being strong enough on immigration, and then are gung-ho about Lieberman, who is far to the left of Bush on most issues AND does not even support any border security whatsoever, including a fence? These conservatives who say things like “I would vote for Lieberman over DeWine” are living in Cloud Cuckooland.
januarius on October 24, 2006 at 10:45 AM
Bravo. Bravo.
americanpundit on October 24, 2006 at 10:45 AM
So, they are really afraid of Leiberman. Hmmm.
Mazztek on October 24, 2006 at 10:46 AM
I’m with januarius. It’s a sad state of affairs when conservatives have to support a wet noodle like Lieberman. He ran as Al Gore’s vice president in 2000, for Christ’s sake! Sure, he supports the war, but he’ll sell out this country ten other ways in the meantime just like any other liberal.
I can see trying to keep Lamont out of office, but that doesn’t mean I have to act like Joe’s my best friend.
jaleach on October 24, 2006 at 11:03 AM
jaleach, since Schlesinger has like single digit likeliness of winning, its either Lieberman or Lamont. But, you’re right. Sad day when we have to support Lieberman over a Republican.
americanpundit on October 24, 2006 at 11:06 AM
I couldn’t hear what Schlesinger actually said. Either the sound was distorted or I need new speakers. Anyone care to transcribe his words? :)
dscherck on October 24, 2006 at 11:19 AM
Maybe I don’t “grok” the mindset of the NYTs or Lamont supporters, but that article seemed pretty fair to me. In fact, it seemed to be a good case for why Lieberman is the one to support in this Lieberman/Lamont campaign.
EFG on October 24, 2006 at 11:46 AM
He said “Show some respect to Senator Lieberman! Leave this audience NOW!” “Enough.”
Bravo to Mr. Schlessinger.
annoyinglittletwerp on October 24, 2006 at 11:53 AM
That was interesting theater, but it seems fairly certain that Lieberman is going to win. The guy has a five-point lead over the other two candidates combined. The question is, when he is back in the Senate, who is he going to caucus with. The Democrats, who turned their back on him or the Republicans who will have elected him. I think we’re going to see a Jeffords in reverse, possibly sealing a Republican majority in the Senate.
factoid on October 24, 2006 at 12:03 PM
Re the desperate NYT’s article trashing Lieberman ….
Too bad the New York Times couldn’t have devoted a few man hours and one column of print to informing the public about Ned Lamont’s past. Do we know anything about this guy, other than he’s made a boatload of money in telecommunications and he’s willing to spend most of it to become a Senator?
Not that it’s important anymore.
fogw on October 24, 2006 at 12:06 PM
Welcome to the GOP, Joe, and way to go, Mr. Schlessinger! I think it must have been Jesse and Al making those noises in the audience in support of their good friend Lamont.
Redblock on October 24, 2006 at 12:12 PM
Doesn’t this constitute some kind of McCain-Feingold violation where in-kind contributions are concerned?
Kid from Brooklyn on October 24, 2006 at 12:27 PM
In plain english – Since Lamont doesn’t seem able to do any research on his own, we here at the NYTimes have decided to smear Leiberman for him.
Well, no sh#%. Do the moonbats at the Times really expect Joe to play nice after the way the Dem party has treated him?
Yes, it’s panic time for the Dems there. They ran their best candidate out of office, and now he’s kicking their a$$ on his own terms.
BacaDog on October 24, 2006 at 1:07 PM
Allah,
Thanks for posting this and others just like it…I would never see it. It’s imperative that we civilize debate, and I don’t see any other way other then exposing the “tolerant” left’s open mouths and closed ears!
budorob on October 24, 2006 at 1:16 PM
Hecklers should be immediately escorted out of any debate. Free speech is wonderful; but having respect and common courtesy is imperative. I’ve said it a million times, there is a difference between freedom and liscentiousness. This heckler attitude is the latter rather than the former.
Gotta love Schlessinger’s heartfelt response.
LaVentanita on October 24, 2006 at 1:45 PM
Schlesinger does it the big boy way.
Ouabam on October 24, 2006 at 1:52 PM
Remember Michael Moore’s warning after the primary Lamont won? Funny stuff!
sirmyth on October 24, 2006 at 3:12 PM
Couple this with the stage storming tactics at Columbia, their willingness to fire guns into and burglarize Republican offices, and their willingness of the SONS of elected Democratic Congressment to vandalize Repubilcan vehicles in 2004, and it ought to be more than clear that the Democrats have become a party of Brownshirts.
georgej on October 24, 2006 at 3:46 PM
Good on Schlesinger. I just wish he would have done it sooner, like right away.
The heckler got too waay too much in – where was security?
What about the audience? Nobody wants to say anything to the heckler??
flagwaver on October 24, 2006 at 4:12 PM
Thanks for the transcribe of Schlesinger’s words. :)
Kudos to Schlesinger as well for standing up to the annoying audience guy.

I’m reminded of a time back in the 80s when Phil Gramm and Dick Armey conducted a town hall meeting at a local university one weekend. My best friend and I were both recently discharged vets, and I practically dragged him along to see it. At one point, when Gramm and Armey were criticizing judicial activism, a Democrat heckler seated directly in front of us yelled at them, “Judge-made law is a great American tradition!” Whereupon my friend (who has always been more courageous than I) leaned forward and stage-whispered at the back of the guy’s head, “So’s being an a****** in public, s***-for-brains.”
I thought it was the high point of the meeting.

Nicely done
There were alot of moments i wish i coulda said that on campus to some schmucks
Defector01 on October 24, 2006 at 8:16 PM
I don’t know, it seemed to me that Lieberman was disgusted, not about to cry. He did at least say, in his meek and mild-mannered fashion, “stop it, get outta here”. Schlesinger showed his anger however, which was terrific. Notice Lamont applauding rather belatedly only as he heard the audience giving it up for Schlesinger. I love the audience though. You can hear yells of “shut up!”, and “knock it off!”. I only wish someone would’ve done so sooner. It is beyond excruciating to have to hear the moron singing. I can just guess what he looked like.
