Video: Mark Steyn discusses “America Alone” on C-SPAN

Something for the fanboys to start the day: 45 minutes from his latest appearance on Washington Journal. Click the image below and scroll to 33:45 in the video window.

Read this Niall Ferguson op-ed, too. Like Steyn, he laments the fact that America isn’t more imperial in its ambitions. Unlike Steyn, he believes we’re fundamentally incapable of projecting imperial power — and that by making its foreign policy a function of domestic policy, the Bush administration has made the problem vastly worse.

Couldn’t you find a better screenshot of him. He looks like he is pinching a loaf.

Bill C on October 24, 2006 at 9:51 AM

Allah always uses that picture of him! I’m not sure why, much like the KP giggling picture; it seems to be some sort of tradition.

lorien1973 on October 24, 2006 at 9:54 AM

Seems to be an intentional screenshot to me.

Hahah. I actually don’t have any other C-SPAN screenshots.

I personally love this facial expression of Mark’s–he’s such a hoot!

I read my autographed copy (which you can buy at Steynonline.com) of “America Alone” in one day–it’s terrific, funny and scary, but he makes clear what America’s duty is and will be re: Global War on IslamoFascist Terror: to lead the world in fighting this menace which threatens to “re-primitivize” the whole civilized world.

If the direct link does not work for you, open realplayer and paste the link into the File/Open input box.

On a train from Princeton to New York, I saw a man with a Noam Chomsky book and from time to time looked over to see if he could actually bring himself to read it. “America Alone” is the most readable political book since Mike Royko’s “Boss.”

We’ll gain more real allies in the War Against Islamic Imperialism as more of the people in these not-yet-quite-allies-again countries (in Europe and elsewhere) start dying and cities start bruning from the revolt of unnamed “youth”, mis-named “asians” and unassimilated “guest workers”.

Until then, as usual, we have to do the hard work for the soft world.

(That they know we’ll do it for them …all these lands who have gutted their militaries in favor of socialistic invitations to resentful, infil-traitor aliens… keeps them silent for the time being, if not vocally anti-American.)

Realplayer.

Feh.

I haven’t gotten to the Niall Ferguson article, but Bill Whittle had a great essay on US Imperialism a ways back. I think it was called, “On Power”

He mentions how (historically) the US is an anomoly in that it has great and unrivaled military & economic power, but yet doesn’t overtly exert it’s will on other nation-states.

I found it fascinating.

That is the best screen shot ever. It comes from a time when Steyn was talking about the wretched Valarie Plame outing affair, when it was clear that the whole thing was much ado about nothing. And some IDIOTIC called said that they just found a memo from the office of Dick Cheney that proved that this was all a big plot…we neeed to investigate…blah blah blah. PATHETIC!

Anyway, Mark Steyn went did that face you see and went “oooooh, that’s a great idea! Why don’t we spend another year, two years or 10 years beating arround the bush about this. Sure! Afterall, there’s nothing else that’s important that’s happening in the world right now. Let’s spend the next 5 years chasing after this nonsense.”

Anyway, it was a great putdown, done in the classic Mark Steyn way. So every time I see that shot of Mark going “ooooooh”, I laugh a little.

Good times.

Steyn on the possibility of Bush inviting KJL to Crawford for a chit-chat over barbecue:

“Kim Jong Il is not a rib’s kind of guy, not unless the ribs are of the guy he’s just tortured to death.”

Doctor, I thought you said that was an oral thermometer.

Not likely to use realplayer, I prefer to remain mysterious.

You’ve just solved a year’s worth of problems for me at C-SPAN! Thanks.

For those who don’t like RealPlayer, you can use Real Alternative (download page here), which provides RealMedia Codecs for Media Player Classic (MPC). QuickTime Codecs are also available for MPC.

Unfortunately, it isn’t free, but I use this to download cspan videos all the time:

I’ve read good things about WM Recorder, too, but I haven’t tried it (comparison).

If you’re comfortable with the command line, MPlayer (different from MPC I mentioned previously) is free and can dump streams, though it downloads in real-time (~3 hours in this case). For example:

mplayer -dumpfile wj102306.rm -dumpstream rtsp://video.c-span.org/15days/wj102306.rm

Steyn is a hunk even in that screen shot.

NTWR on October 24, 2006 at 7:05 PM

Mark made the face captured in that frame as he was ridiculing a call by someone who was making a weak attempt to keep the Plame “scandal” viable with a bit of nonsense she’d learned from Keith Olbermann. The photo is an instant Allahpundit classic, in my opinion.

Kralizec on October 24, 2006 at 10:34 PM

I think his facial expression tells us that he’s at a strip club and a dancer has just now dropped her panties and he’s like: “ooooooh, looka dat ass!”
