I still don’t understand why Denmark lost ground. It was mentioned that their reporters needed police protection. Guilt by association?

IMHO, Reporters Without Borders is guilty of being irresponsible, and irrelevant.

Denmark (19th) dropped from joint first place because of serious threats against the authors of the Mohammed cartoons published there in autumn 2005. For the first time in recent years in a country that is very observant of civil liberties, journalists had to have police protection due to threats against them because of their work.

The formerly #1 ranked country fell due to the fact that the press was free to publish the cartoons, and was then threatened by the oh-so-sensitive followers of the religion of peace and have to have police protection.

I’m not sure how their rankings really even count if they don’t seperate repression from the “establishment” and that of freaked-out whack jobs (the latter, of course, requiring protection from the establishment).

Besides, what the hell kind of sensitive information does Finland or Iceland (sharing #1) have anyway?

Kini, good point, except they don’t even bother to hide anything. Look at any day’s Yahoo or Reuters headlines – says it all. Then the articles by the hundreds every day…an old and obvious hat. Must say, though, they’ve become more brazen and ‘in your face’ about it, especially in this pre-election time.

Wow…. 56 countries…. can I see the list??? It should be VERY enlghtening….

…agreed…then, once we have the list, could we email it to “Pinch” Sulzberger and Ted Turner, in hopes that they’ll emigrate?

I wonder if by “free”, the solons who rate who is and isn’t “free” in this case followed the norms of libs today and confused “free” with “I get everything I want, now, FOR FREE, with apologies from everyone around me for taking so long to get it to me”.

These are “News Makers”. They make it UP. They slant it. It’s an Agenda Driven story meant to diminutive the subject of the story. It is not transparent.

Anyone can wear a Press Badge, but that doesn’t make it right to stage the news. That’s where “Freedom” gets distorted and misinformation becomes headlines.

The mere act of arresting a reporter does not mean that you don’t have a free press. Unless, of course, you define ‘free press’ to mean that a reporter can do whatever the heck they please including providing information and material support to the enemy during a time of war without suffering any consequences”. I suppose, if that’s your definition of ‘free press’ then the US does not have a completely free press (although much freer than I’d like it to be given that definition).

What? They’re not? You mean that the American press can reveal national security investigative methods and say bad things about the president???
