Site improvements

Over the weekend, our fabulous web guy, Mark Jaquith, introduced a cool new channel-surfing feature to Hot Air TV. Just click on “shows” and you can now surf easily among our different programs. You can also toggle back and forth between recent and new episodes of Vent. Pretty nifty, huh?

We’ve got more site improvements on the way. Stay tuned and let us know what you think.

I like more posts. Tell the hosts to post more. If there isn’t something newsworthy, then they should just make something up. It is the internet.

Also, we should be able to win free beer just for reading.

Say it ain’t so Michelle! If an actual Preview button is on the way, I’ll go into shock…

RD on October 23, 2006 at 9:00 AM

Nice work. Thanks!

CrimsonFisted on October 23, 2006 at 9:04 AM

Frank, I thought you had the corner on that market!

Nice work, Mark. The place looks great!

Pablo on October 23, 2006 at 9:06 AM

Noticed the channel surfing feature this weekend. Very cool.

And I second frankj’s free beer suggestion.

Slublog on October 23, 2006 at 9:10 AM

Great job Mark, as usual. If you keep raising everyones expectations like this, they’re never going to give you any peace. For you next trick you might want to really screw something up. Sure, you’ll lose business, but think of all the free time you’ll have to blog.

May I request that we allow commenters to choose a background ‘tint’ color for their posts? Having a Red or Blue option would be just fine. I always try to find the blue comments first just hear the other side. I know, I know, they usually contain hate-filled nonsense, but it could make things more interesting.

Thanks,
FFOG

Fogpig on October 23, 2006 at 9:31 AM

My only request would be to have a search option so that when posts are pushed off of the home page they will still be relatively easy to find.

And that posts with youtube videos have a seperate section as well, but that’s just because I cannot view them while at work.

Esthier on October 23, 2006 at 9:40 AM

Thanks Michelle! It is actually a cool feature. It makes it easier to see the archived videos.

americanpundit on October 23, 2006 at 9:42 AM

Thanks Michelle,
I’ve requested a few times that if possible, can you number the comment boxes? Many times I don’t have time to read all the comments and if they were numbered, it would be easier to go right back where I left off. Just a suggestion. Have an awesome day :)

allie on October 23, 2006 at 9:50 AM

Also noticed the video content split out into separate headings – cool.

RD on October 23, 2006 at 9:52 AM

Nice work, even though the Dixie Chicks commercial on the right iof the page’s getting on my nerves after some time…

Esthier, check the right sidebar, below the ads and above the “Hot Links”.

Pablo on October 23, 2006 at 10:12 AM

free beer for reading, free hot dogs for best comment of the day, too many comments in one thread…you’re buying the beer.

shooter on October 23, 2006 at 10:55 AM

Michelle you continue to make life better. Sincere Thanks

infidel on October 23, 2006 at 10:58 AM

The entire HotAir crew, for all you do, this Bud’s for you.

(Wait a minute. They don’t sponsor illegal immigration marches, do they?)

Seriously, though, thanks for all the recent improvements, as well as providing one of the all-around best sites on the web.

Ahem! Remote control?

:-)

Kralizec on October 23, 2006 at 11:17 AM

Okay Allah is taking requests, how very 70’s in a Casey Kassam sort of way. Here is my long distance request. When clicking on the comments have a function that can take me directly to the bottom to see the most recent comment and then I can work backwards.
/Listen that whole spinning the mouse wheel to get to the bottom of a thread can get exhausting and causes cramps. :)

LakeRuins on October 23, 2006 at 11:46 AM

Michelle,

What I’d really, really like is a “twit-filter” button, to make certain comments from certain commentators disappear from my screen. No, not the ability to delete them from the blog, but just make them not visible on my session.

Since you opened up the blog last week, at least two of the newbies like to express opinions that I really do not care to read, especially when one who personally insults you, our host, and the other continually insults my intelligence through his trolling.

While these commentators may have worthy things to say from the point of view of others reading this blog, I could care less what their opinions are, but it is not for me to censor their opinions.

I certainly do not want to censor or stifle the opinions of others. I just don’t want to have to read what passes for “intelligent discourse” of ceratain people. And I daresay, there might be some who feel that way about me, as well. Ya think? Nah. ;^)

Unfortunately, as comments appear sequentially in the downloaded page, it is hard to simply ignore such posters and their blather. So, I would like a mechanism to make their comments simply not show up on my screen. Others would still have the “benefit” and joy of reading their words of wisdom, if they so choose.

I can think of several mechanisms to accomplish this. You have already a suggestion to number the comments individually. If you added a “bookmark” capability, perhaps using cookies, and a server-side filter or possibly DSS/DHTML based upon the the contents of said cookie, you could simply toss aside the comments of the selected commentators from the download to the screen.

Maybe you could include the “twitlist” in your registered user profile, or could simply save it as a stored cookie on the user’s computer.

No doubt there are other ways to do this, and your webmaster is extremely capable.

Thank you for your consideration.

I agree Frank. In addition, what this site needs is more monkeys. Many a time I have read a thought provoking essay here, and the first thing that pops into my mind is “yeah, this place is great, but what it really needs is more monkeys.”

Monkeys, Frank. Free range monkeys. Lots of them.

Hmm, I noticed Bethany has her own section in the vault – how did that happen, AP?

Rick on October 23, 2006 at 12:30 PM

Can we vote people off the HA island?

georgej on October 23, 2006 at 11:54 AM
Like george said, something like Digg has, bury the comment?
I really dont know the overall value, but it might be more effort than it’s worth. It’s just a convenience feature, but nice to have.

shooter on October 23, 2006 at 12:40 PM

HotAir Team,

My vote…………number the posts, have an “open thread” daily.

That is all.

I’m Bacadog and I endorse this message………….

BacaDog on October 23, 2006 at 1:29 PM

My vote…………number the posts

I agree.

Number the posts, and a preview button. Please.

EFG on October 23, 2006 at 1:31 PM

Oh, one more thing.

Please get that picture of Teddy off of the front page.

We are getting spoiled here MM!
Great job on the new feature! Thanks for not standing still and resting on your so deserved laurels. Instead you are constantly evolving! THANKS!

Nice improvements…
Would have commented earlier but was trapped scrolling thru the “Press Play” archives. (My eyes have trouble leaving Bethany.)

What about HD video for The Vent?

Consider that more people are buying PC/Macs with screen capable of showing HD-resolution video that are much larger than the 15″ LCD monitors that came with every new computer only a year ago. Top-shelf Apple Macs have 21″ screens and Windows XP Media Center Edition PCs are often sold with 42″ plasma screen TVs.

If you really want to differntiate yourselves from Tooble or GooTube or whatever it’s called, one unique way is to have a 720p HD video feed on HotAir.

To make this happen you’re gonna have to think like a Sillicon Valley San Fran lib here… you can’t be conservative and say: “It’ll never work! User’s won’t watch it! Our servers don’t have enough bandwidth to the user! The video compression we use won’t do HD! WAAAAAH WAAAAAH WAAAAAAH!”

Those two newly-minted zillionaires at YouTube said: “Any videos/any where/any time on a webpage: how do we make this work?” and then they did it.

Now it’s your turn.

If you want help making this work from your fans and users, you’ve got it. Just say the word.

We’d love to be able to tell our lefty know-it-all friends: “You kiddies can play in your GooTooble sandbox with your postage stamp-sized video but the adults will be over here with our HotAir HD. When you’re ready to grow up, we’ll be waiting.”

ScottMcC on October 23, 2006 at 4:41 PM

Good stuff Michelle. Thank you.

Now, can we please have a “preview comment” button next to the “submit comment” button? Sometimes all that html linking really garbles up that tiny little comment square and, speaking for myself and a few others I think, I miss a lot of mistakes and typos.

Thanks again!

SilverStar830 on October 23, 2006 at 5:15 PM

I’m with SilverStar in wishing for a “preview comment” button, and will add in a request for emoticons just to stand out from the crowd.

Honestly, I would be proud if my posts displayed the American Flag.

I need something that pops out of my monitor and slaps me silly everytime I get the desire to start responding to GregH or Honora….

E L Frederick on October 23, 2006 at 5:46 PM

More hotair is better. I approve this message.

wcarr on October 23, 2006 at 5:51 PM

I’d like to have the ability to slap E L Frederick silly, when he/she gets the desire to start responding to GregH or honora. Just kidding.

Entelechy on October 23, 2006 at 6:20 PM

LOL!

E L Frederick on October 23, 2006 at 7:13 PM

I’d also like numbered comments and preview.

INC on October 23, 2006 at 9:07 PM

Esthier, check the right sidebar, below the ads and above the “Hot Links”.

Ah, so I see now. Thank you.

Esthier on October 23, 2006 at 9:19 PM

Thanks for opening registration. It’s great to be able to post here. And thanks for the great site.

But you really need post preview. We can get by without it, but it’s difficult. Please, please, please add it.

JimC on October 23, 2006 at 11:01 PM

Did I mention spell check?

I dropped my Google taskbar last week, and explained to them that I refuse to use such a notoriously left wing propaganda tool. The Ask.com toolbar has no spell checker, so…
