Videos: Steele vs. Cardin

posted at 11:47 am on October 20, 2006 by Ian

Maryland Lt Gov and Senate candidate Michael Steele’s new ad uses rival Ben Cardin’s own words against him. Dirty pool or truth-telling? You make the call.

Instead of responding to Steele’s ad, Ben Cardin has decided to run yet another attack ad. In this one he vilifies Steele for supporting President Bush. Wait, wait, wait. Steele, a Republican, supports President Bush! No way! When will Cardin understand that this election is against Michael Steele, not President Bush? Never. And given the blue sea that is Maryland he may not have to ever grasp that reality. Cardin also goes after Steele for running an ad paid for by the Republican Senatorial Committee. Isn’t that what it’s there for? And it’s not like Democrats have never run ads paid for by the Democratic Senatorial Committee. You know–the group whose staffers dumpster-dived to snatch Steele’s SSN for dirt-digging purposes.

If you been watching Cardin’s ads, all he does is take clips from Steele’s speech at the 2004 Republican National Convention in which he says he loves George Bush. Again: A Republican who supports President Bush? What. A. Surprise. (via Odub)

By the way, when will Cardin apologize for Steny Hoyer’s remark that Steele has “slavishly” supported the Republican party? That’s wasn’t an innocent slip of the tongue–it was a calculated racial slur. Cardin invited Hoyer and gave him a stage, literally, for his racist remarks. This isn’t the first time Hoyer has employed racism when attacking Michael Steele. In 2002, he called the then-candidate for Lieutenant Governor a “token candidate” and compared him to Clarence Thomas. Ironically, some liberal professor has released one of those liberals are more open-minded than conservative “studies” today. Ha. Only in the “minds so open that their brain leaked out” way.

According to a SurveryUSA poll, Steele and Cardin are neck-and-neck at 46%. Sister Toldjah analyzes the poll.

Have they whipped any oreo cookies at Steele yet? I’d like to see this guy win, but I think its a long shot (even with the polls tied at the moment). Endorsements are coming soon; and you all know who they are gonna support.

Cardin just like other liberals avoid the real issues. They are so shallow in the idea pool. But but he worked for Bush.. Yeah good job Cardin. I wish the Maryland voters would wise up and put Steele in office.

Democrats and liberals will call the republicans and conservatives racist. Then when the democrat is faced with a black conservative, they call him an uncle tom for stepping out of line. I’m sure they would use a whip if they could.

When will Cardin understand that this election is against Michael Steele, not President Bush?

There is a similar situation here in California. The Dem gubernatorial candidate seems to be running against Bush’s foreign policy, rather than Arnold’s record in the state.

Whenever someone brings up racist conservatives, I simply point to this on racist liberals. Indicted by one of their own.

Scroll past the Jon Stewart Article:

Democrats and independents were far more generous; on average, they gave Katrina victims on average more than $1,500 a month, compared with $1,200 for Republicans, and for 13 months instead of nine.

But for Democrats, race mattered — and in a disturbing way. Overall, Democrats were willing to give whites about $1,500 more than they chose to give to a black or other minority. (Even with this race penalty, Democrats still were willing to give more to blacks than those principled Republicans.) “Republicans are likely to be more stringent, both in terms of money and time, Iyengar said. “However, their position is ‘principled’ in the sense that it stems from a strong belief in individualism (as opposed to handouts). Thus their responses to the assistance questions are relatively invariant across the different media conditions. Independents and Democrats, on the other hand, are more likely to be affected by racial cues.”

Iyengar said he’s not surprised by the latest findings: “This pattern of results matches perfectly an earlier study I did on race and crime” with Franklin D. Gilliam Jr. of UCLA. “Republicans supported tough treatment of criminals no matter what they encountered in the news. Others were more elastic in their position, coming to support more harsh measures when the criminal suspect they encountered was non-white.”

Every time I bring this up to a liberal, they have not had an intelligent response. It’s wonderful. :)

Demolibs have ZERO new ideas to run on. They are stuck in 1960.

SouthernGent on October 20, 2006 at 12:24 PM

Let’s look at Cardin’s biggest supporter – Steny Hoyer. Anyone catch his comments about Steele “Being a Slave to the Republicans” In 2004 refered to Steele as a “token”

Hoyer also shot Mfume right out of the race for Senate this year.

And that clown could be the next Speaker –

But the Dems are the best friend African Americans have, as long as they are kept in place. I really hope the African American community wakes up!!!!

Steele is a class act and I wish I could vote for him. If we only had that kind of quality here in Cali. Boxer and Feinstein… someone…. please wake me when this nightmare is over.

Sacwannabe on October 20, 2006 at 12:38 PM

I wish I could jump the VA/MD border to vote for this guy. I’ve actually really enjoyed Steele’s ad’s. I actually look forward to them. Maybe someone will wisen up in that state.

KineticJustice on October 20, 2006 at 12:43 PM

The apology story is here.

Gotta love it. Liberals can, and often do screw up a free meal.

DannoJyd on October 20, 2006 at 1:10 PM

lorien1973…

They have indeed already whipped oreo cookies at him.. disgusting.

Kinetic, I’m with you, I’d like to jump over to MD for Steele myself….but GA is gonna need my vote here in VA almost as much, sad to say.

This has got to be the most vitriolic election year I’ve ever witnessed.

bernzright777 on October 20, 2006 at 1:11 PM

I like the ads by Mr. Steele of Maryland and Mr. Robinson in North Carolina. Great ads. We need more outspoken leadership. Heck I live in AZ and gave to both campaigns.

BTW, Did I miss the memo stating race, gender or sexual orientation influencing LEADERSHIP skills?

lorien1973………re: article of Katrina giving….people need to understand a helping hand is not a piggyback ride.

Also a similar situation in PA; all Bob Casey can talk about is how “Sen. Santorum supports Pres. Bush 98% of the time”; instead of talking about issues, his plans, etc. I watched the first debate between them almost two weeks ago (didn’t get to see the latest one), and all Casey did was whine about Santorum supporting Pres. Bush. Santorum asked Casey tough questions about what HE would do if…, Casey never answered any of them.

It’s amazing that both senators and the House Minority leader are all from San Francisco. You would think the rest of the state didn’t exist.

Today’s moonbats on the left are steeped in hatred and only champion minority groups when it’s to their advantage. When it’s not, they become vicious.

They claim to be pro-homosexual, but let a Republican even be suspected of being gay, and suddenly the moonbats abandon their position and become the “homophobes” that they formerly castigated.

They claim to champion the cause of blacks, but let one part ways with the prevailing liberal orthodoxy, and suddenly they become such vicious racists that even the Klan would blush.

Then they call us ‘hypocrites’.

thirteen28 on October 20, 2006 at 1:55 PM

I really can not wait to see Steele get elected. This race really does a wonderful job of illustrating the hipocrisy of the leftoids and moonbats. Makes me sad to see such an apparently upstanding guy treated this way, though I can’t say it suprises me.

I am a Woman of Steele!! I will be voting for him on the 7th. I will think of all of you when I cast my ballot. I truely hope he wins, then maybe I can change my handle. Until then, I’ve got the…

Am I the only one here who thinks that dog Steele is holding is kinda scary looking?

Look at it. It’s eyes are all bugged out, and it’s leaning forward, as if the only thing stopping it from attacking is the fact the Steele is restraining it. Barely.

The only thing running through that dogs mind is calculations on how best to sink it’s razor sharp teeth into your fingers if you try to pet it, or your nose if you lean forward towards it.

Well I’m sorry. I’ve considered all the issues carefully, and this is one republican who will be voting for Cardin this year.

Because of the dog.

With Steele seeming to have pulled even in the polls, I wouldn’t bet against him. I suspect that the polls are overstating Cardin support among African-Americans because the latter wouldn’t want to tell a pollster that they were going to vote for a Republican. If that’s the case, Steele may even be the favorite right now–and if he actually wins, Harry Reid can kiss his Majority Leadership good-bye.

Athanasius on October 20, 2006 at 3:45 PM

I’m really rooting for Steele. Liberals across the country are scared to death that he might win. Last time a poll showed Steele running close to his rival, liberals freaked. All of a sudden, in order to scare black voters, liberal Larry Sabato of UVA stated that Allen called someone a n*****, probably knowing it would get a lot of press in Maryland. I wonder how the liberal meltdown will manifest itself this time.

januarius on October 20, 2006 at 5:51 PM

The voices of Conservative minorites in this election cycle (like Michael Steele in Maryland)need to be supported by us Southern crackers, now more than ever. We have a chance to shrug off the remnants of the casual –dare I call it—”presumptive racist-ism”—that would have us believe that there are simply no Conservative minorities in our own backyard.

Find them. Court them. They are your neighbors and your friends. Not because of how they can help us secure an election, but because of how they can help themselves secure the blessings of liberty in the America we were all promised.

A vote for Steele is a vote for puppies!

Ya know, someone should whip up a shirt that says “I like puppies too.” Or better yet, a Steele puppy doll thing, like the Teddy Bear for Teddy Roosevelt.

MirCat on October 20, 2006 at 11:24 PM

His puppy commercial reminds me of Tom McClintock’s Treasurer commercials a few years back in California: witty, sarcastic, and generally inoffensive. I only hope they work better than Sen. McClintock’s did (apologies if I have grossly misspelled his name). Overall, I wish him (and all the other Republican candidates) luck. I’m not overly pleased with the performance of the Republicans for the past few years (border security and spending, anyone) but to stay home and sit this one out would be foolish! So until the Liberatrians stand a chance…

Militant Bibliophile on October 21, 2006 at 12:38 AM

The greatest threat to the dems? A black conservative. Steny “mini” Hoyer played the race card again calling Steele “slavish” to the GOP. Slavish? But that’s right, the politically correct police can use such terms with impunity. Let a repub do that and it’s over for him, his family, dog, car, and anything else they can destroy. Well, if Steele is “slavish” as Hoyer said, then he’s a freed slave, free from the liberal plantation….and look who’s trying to return him to servitude…the tolerant dems…..

Steele will win….God willing..

ritethinker on October 21, 2006 at 12:59 AM

Check out the rap sheet on Michael Steele…

Ian, you’re no better than Hoyer. I’m impressed that you were able to work two stereotypes into one sentence. First, you insinuate that because Steele is black, he must ‘rap’. Second, you use ‘rap sheet’ to imply that Steele has some sort of criminal record.

You almost got away with it, you racist bigot.

The contrast in ads highlights all that is wrong with the Dems. Many years ago I worked for Cardin. He is an honorable righteous man, really cares about his constituents, is a good father and a religious man. Funny thing is – comparing men – he is very much like Mr. Steele. No one would disagree that Michael Steele is a good decent man, with good motives and that he really cares about people and our great country. With so much going for him – WHY WOULD CARDIN STOOP TO SUCH LOWS? It was embarrassing to watch Cardin degrade himself with his Jerry Springer style ad. But as he said – “I approve of this message!” Steele’s ads are upbeat, respectful and “proper.” They try to project an image of a good decent man that has our interest at heart. GO STEELE GO!
