Video: Requiem for a dream

Colbert had Richard Dawkins on a few nights ago to debate whether God exists.

He did exist. But he’s dead now. Either that, or he’s a Yankees fan.

Given those options, I prefer to believe he’s dead.

Although for a few minutes there in the sixth inning, I was starting to believe…

Update: A little bonus video for the Yankee fans who’ve stopped by to gloat.

Don’t worry, Allah – the Tigers will defeat the Cards.

This is my first comment on HotAir and I could not be happier to see MY CARDINALS beat the Pond Scum!

Yes! (Will this comment get me banned from HotAir?)

gatewaypundit on October 20, 2006 at 12:01 AM

I called this right here at HA at the beginning of the playoffs..Tigers/Cards! :)
Sorry AP and Kid from Brooklyn but the best teams won.
So now..GO NATIONAL LEAGUE..GO CARDS! (Altho the Tigers are having a Cinderella year and are so appealing!)

labwrs on October 20, 2006 at 12:03 AM

EVERYONE IS BANNED.

Allahpundit on October 20, 2006 at 12:04 AM

well, just goes to show everyone that it doesn’t matter who has the better record – in the playoffs anything can happen, btw, it’s the 5th year in a row without a New York team in the World Series. yes i know the Dodgers lost, but so did the Mets & the mighty Yankees. Go Cardinals!

Starblazer on October 20, 2006 at 12:05 AM

Uh oh…maybe we shoulda waited until the hurt wasnt so fresh…a ticked off deity isnt good.
Umm..AllahP..there’s always next year! :)

labwrs on October 20, 2006 at 12:06 AM

and just think, last year it was 2 Central divsion teams (White Sox & Astros) & now it’s 2 central division teams again & No New York teams. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Is it wrong to question God’s existence based on the outcome of a baseball game?

I don’t think so.

Allahpundit on October 20, 2006 at 12:12 AM

Okey..time to slip out the backdoor.
ALLAHP..umm..can we have an open thread during the series to chat amongst our lowly selves?
And now that I think of it..the Mets were ROBBED..yep..they were..ROBBED. There oughta be a Law I tell you..those stinking Cardinals..why they CHEATED..they HAD to cheat! How else to you explain them winning? That’s it.. *g*

labwrs on October 20, 2006 at 12:13 AM

I question the timing of the pitch Heilman threw to Molina.

Allahpundit on October 20, 2006 at 12:14 AM

just face it, the Mets lost to a better team.

Starblazer on October 20, 2006 at 12:15 AM

Sorry Allah, I thought Chavez’s catch was going to turn the game. But I think I spend too much time reading your posts. As soon as the last out was called I thought of you. Better luck next year, but I warned all New Yorkers, you’ll never win another title as long as Hillary represents you.

Just heard Willie Randolph’s comments in the post-game press conference. I must say the man is a class act. The Mets have nothing to be ashamed of.

Well… maybe that last strikeout.

infidel4life on October 20, 2006 at 12:19 AM

I have to root for the Cardinals by city association, since I’m a St. Louis Rams fan and plus, since a good buddy of mine is a mega-Cards fan.

Hey man, God gave up on traffic in L.A. a long time ago.

Alex K on October 20, 2006 at 12:27 AM

gee, Alex K are you upset that the Mets lost to a better team? yeah, i know the Dodgers lost, but again so did the Mets & Yankees

Starblazer on October 20, 2006 at 12:30 AM

Allah you think you are suffering try being a Texas Stranger Fan! Well, Pudge will be there and the Gambler. Both have given the Strangers sweet memories. So I guess I’ll root for Tigers. Who are you going to root for Allah?

Drtuddle on October 20, 2006 at 12:37 AM

Mets had a lot of heart, but not quite enough bats. They got some fine pitching out of Maine and a lot more out of Olivier Perez than anybody expected.

On the Cardinals side…well, Taguchi! And Suppan. And how about Molina, who hit .216 in the regular season. He’s MVP IMO, or Suppan.

I’m a huge Cards fan, but the Tigers have 3 100mph guys who are about 23 yrs old. Hehe. Then the guy who is twice as old. Kenny Rogers.

Either way…Go Cards.

Spassvogel on October 20, 2006 at 12:39 AM

AP,

The ‘Mazins had a season to be proud of. And take it easy, remember, you aren’t a Cubs fan. I’ve always had a soft spot for those poor saps, but I sure am glad I don’t hang my heart on how Chicago finishes a season.

The Almighty? I have learned to respect you as a rational soul, AP, so I find it difficult to accept that you can’t see the obvious, God’s veins run blue. Dodger blue.

Freelancer on October 20, 2006 at 1:03 AM

If He had to fight the traffic out of Dodger Stadium after a game Chavez Ravine would be a smoking crater.

He’d do what real fans do. Sit and enjoy the beautiful sight of Dodger stadium slowly emptying out, and head for the lot when it starts to clear. I can understand why fans whose teams average less than 44,000 per game attendance would criticize the traffic leaving an L.A. game, but the trade-off is certainly worth it.

Freelancer on October 20, 2006 at 1:09 AM

It was a good catch though… Ha!

Any postseason is a roaring success so long as the Yankees lose.

clark smith on October 20, 2006 at 1:21 AM

As for Mr. Dawkins, he came across as a pretty pleasant guy. What I’d like to say to intellectual atheists is that the mind is one tool with which to perceive life, the universe and everything, but it’s not the only tool, and sometimes not the best for a particular job. I think those who don’t attempt to experience things through the spirit are missing out on something.

And I still think the Yanks are gonna find a way to win it.

mikeyboss on October 20, 2006 at 1:22 AM

Being from Houston, watching Beltran choke in the playoffs was nice. But take heart Met fans, the Cards are going to get swept in the Series, again.

D_bot on October 20, 2006 at 1:27 AM

It’s amazing how no-one feels sorry for a Braves fan who had gotten quite used to my team being there in the Playoffs. Now I know what Brewers fans feel EVERY year. I have to go with the Cards, NL unity, whatever.

Even though StL is my home, I’ve never cared about baseball….unless it involves the opportunity to see a NY team over-hyped and then beaten. Ya know what? I’m startin’ to like this game now that I think about it….

TBinSTL on October 20, 2006 at 2:37 AM

Still…that was definitely the play of the series.

Unbelievable.

That was a great play! Although I haven’t watched much of the Mets or baseball for that matter since that hottie Keith Hernandez retired years ago. ;)

If Alabama wins on Saturday in Knoxville, you will know that there is a God.

Even if Alabama loses, there is a God. But if Alabama wins, you’ll know it.

God exists, independent of your acknowledgement of His existence. Sometimes, however, God will whomp you upside the head, just to get your attention.

AP,

Baseball is fine, and jokes are fine, but suggesting that God is dead is not fine.

That said, it was great fun to see a stadium full on Mets Ninnies with their mouths shut and tears in their eyes.

Heh.

Jaibones on October 20, 2006 at 8:03 AM

PS In 1984, after the Cubs had done the unthinkable (Cub fans have long since expanded their thinking), a San Diego columnist opined that their failure was part of a sick practical joke, 80 years in the making.

I couldn’t help but think about that with the bases loaded, and 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, with the amazing Beltran at the plate.

Three pitches, down looking.

Heh.

Jaibones on October 20, 2006 at 8:11 AM

How about them Patriots? I can’t say anything, My team died in August…stupid Yankees

Ennuipundit on October 20, 2006 at 8:16 AM

I’m a yankee fan, but am actually depressed by this news. I was hoping that at least one of the New York teams would win this year. Since the Yanks left early, I was rooting for the Mets.

americanpundit on October 20, 2006 at 8:30 AM

At least most of you here have some sort of past glory to remember. In 45 years, the Texas Ranger’s pinnacle of success has been to serve as batting practice in the first round on a couple occasions and to be paying $9 mil of A-Rod’s salary for the Yankees (talk about burning money!)

Death by August is an achievement down here; normally we’re dead long before then.

Bear in mind, Hilts, that the Tigers stopped sucking when they added payroll.

When Rolen hit that blast, all I’m thinkin’ is “Game 7 2004 NLCS, bay-bay!” A couple of seconds later I’m cringing. “Is this the end of the dream….?”

I had a premonition that Molina would hit that shot. Ozzie and Jack did it back-to-back Games 5 and 6 in ‘85 NLCS. Rolen did it. Why not Molina, the worst hitting full-time position player in the NL in ‘06? You gotta believe….

“Molina corks one into left center…it may go! Go crazy, folks! Go crazy! It’s a home run! And the Cardinals have won the game…by the score…of three to one…on a home run…by Molina! Go crazy!”

Tongueboy on October 20, 2006 at 9:21 AM

Tigers in 5.

Is it wrong to question God’s existence based on the outcome of a baseball game?

No, I frequently question God’s existence over much more trivial crap. Like this morning, I get to work and somehow we only have decaf in the breakroom.

WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME!?!?!?!?

I’m from Milwaukee, so I just root for the disappointment of others when it comes to baseball. Go Cards!

Enrique on October 20, 2006 at 9:33 AM

At the beginning of the LCS, there was only one scenerio in which I would be actively rooting against a team (Grew up in MD, spent the past 14 years agonizing over the Rockies)

I would have rooted against the A’s if they were playing the Mets. I would have rooted for the Tigers if the Mets beat the Cards.

But now, I dont care who wins… and thus, I can watch, unencumbered by bias, the world series.

bains on October 20, 2006 at 10:17 AM

I’m not much for baseball, but I’ve got a few buddies who are crazy for the Mets, so I watched a lot of the series. Gonna be a lot of people I know that are crushed today. As for the series, Tigers-Cards brings back memories of their last series matchup in ‘68- back when World Series games were still played in daytime, and our teachers would wheel tv’s into the classroom for us to see them. Should be fun. I’ll go with Tigers in 7; Leyland is a genius.

tomk59 on October 20, 2006 at 10:34 AM

Is it wrong to question God’s existence based on the outcome of a baseball game?

I don’t think so.

Allahpundit on October 20, 2006 at 12:12 AM

My thoughts exactly… when the Twins got swept by the vile Oakland A’s. But it’s probably pennence for finally getting a new stadium and winning the AL Central this year.

As for the World Series, it real didn’t matter who won the NLCS because whoever won the ALCS was going to beat them. So the Tigers will get a well deserved World Series win in 5 games over the Cards.

theovermind99 on October 20, 2006 at 10:35 AM

Oops, not not used the commenting system yet. Sorry.

theovermind99 on October 20, 2006 at 10:36 AM

I didn’t think they were going to make it, but the Cards rose to the occasion when it counted. That’s why this is their 17th National League Penant! But I have to be honest, I couldn’t breath during that last inning. And when Beltran came up to bat with bases loaded, let’s just say I almost had to go change my shorts!!

As for you who think my Cards are going to be swept, you better think again. It’s gonna be tough, but the Cards are going to see it through. I love Detroit and Ivan Rodriguez is probably my second favorite player of all time after Lou Brock, but Detroit has too many young players. Yeah they have three young guys who can throw 100 mph rockets, but they can’t do that very often, espcially against Puljos. I believe the Cards can win it. And if they do lose, it will not be from a sweep. It will go all 7 games.

Somewhere in my stuff I still have my old “The Mets Are Pond Scum” t-shirt. hehe

i_will_not_surrender on October 20, 2006 at 11:13 AM

Cards won fair and square, but still:

LaRussa’s the southern end of a northbound horse, and the Cardinals are really classy.

It has just been announced that major league baseball’s 2006 World Series has been **CANCELLED**. Joe Torre held a press conference today in order to inform baseball fans everywhere that the New York Yankees are the 2006 world champions of baseball. Spokespersons for the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals have reluctantly admitted that they have no place to play the series since George Steinbrenner has purchased both Tiger and Busch stadiums. George Steinbrenner’s legal counsel have file papers in U.S. federal district court declaring the 2006 Yankees victorious by virtue of “imminent domain.”

P.S. Won’t be needing my “Yankees suck” hat until April 2007. Anybody want to rent it?

Forgive me baseball fans if my comments are in the wrong discussion but, after watching game 1 of the World Series I am deeply troubled..(not so much by the Tigers loss (which was heart breaking for me) but by Fox Sports pre game show.

Where was the singing of OUR National Anthem last night at the beginning of the World Series in game 1? (Isn’t it ALWAYS shown?)

Has OUR beloved Star Spangled Banner been replaced with ‘America the Beautiful’ as our national anthem & I did not know?

Did you notice that the large American flag that was displayed during the singing of ‘America the Beautiful’ was not shown through Fox Sports on TV?

I’m not happy folks and very disappointed…thanks for letting me vent…now come on Tigers let’s win this thing!

ekuspa40 on October 22, 2006 at 12:26 PM

ekuspa40,

While I certainly don’t disagree with your sentiment, it has been considered for some time now, optional to use America the Beautiful in place of the Star Spangled Banner at sporting events. It’s not the best choice in my opinion, but it isn’t exactly news.

Freelancer on October 22, 2006 at 7:58 PM

Thanks freelancer for the reply… an option for our beloved National Anthem *gasp* my poor big ‘ol patriotic heart just skipped a beat (I did not know that) altho America the Beautiful is a beautiful song.
