CNN airs video of jihadi sniper shooting American soldier

E.M. Zanotti ZP on the Bush/Stephanopoulos Tet tete a tete:
The Tet offensive was not any type of military victory for the North, but a propaganda victory bestowed upon them by the press. And that is exactly what al Qaeda wants desperately to achieve. There is no military victory al Qaeda can hope for, only a defeat of American will. Their sole aim in driving up the body count is to wear us down to the point that we’ll just give up. It’s the only way they can win.
The President has been saying this for a while now. And al Qaeda has been saying this for a while now too – heck and they’ve even thanked journalists for helping to enhance the jihad. Yet the press never seems to recall this.
Don’t they? Front page of CNN, right now:

There’s nothing wrong with showing enemy propaganda. We’ve done it here before and we’ll do it again, for the simple reason that it tells you something about the guy in the other trench: his motives, his methods of persuasion, and how far he’s willing to go.
What does this tell us, though? What did CNN hope to accomplish by showing it?
And why will they show snipers when they won’t show beheading videos? Or the Mohammed cartoons?
E.M. has a hunch, I’m sure. As does Blackfive:
Bottom-line: CNN knowingly plays into the hands of the enemy.
There was a news angle here for CNN if they had wanted it. As it is, you’ll have to read Confederate Yankee for that.
It all reminds me of the “controversy” over Ted Koppel reciting the names of fallen soldiers on Nightline. There’s nothing intrinsically objectionable about that either; on the contrary, it’s noble — if the motive is noble, to honor the dead and not hurt morale. Plain and simple, I don’t trust their motives anymore.
On the upside, though, if we do pull out, stuff like this will help CNN earn the good graces of the new regime. Plus ca change…
Update: It’s 12:06 as I write this. They’re re-airing the sniper segment on CNN right now.
Update: The left will defend this for the same reason they post photos of coffins being unloaded at Dover. Ostensibly, it’s because it “puts a human face” on the war, which the wingnuts can’t stomach and scrupulously avoid. Actually, it’s because it does lower morale among waverers and helps them accomplish their political goal of defeat. Enemy propaganda is a many splendored thing.
Update: Also today on CNN…
Update: Whoops — turns out E.M. Zanotti didn’t write that post I quoted. It was ZP of Zero Point, guest-posting for her. My mistake.

Is there anything that CNN will not do to prove that it is not an American organization?
Hilts on October 19, 2006 at 12:08 PM
Yet they have a problem stating that the insurgency in Iraq is “Terrorism” but rather just freedom fighters ?
Or is the start of the “bash the US because the democratic party is coming to power” trend that we will see over the next few months ?
There are many ways to enable terrorism and the MSM and some democrats rush headlong into that trap.
William Amos on October 19, 2006 at 12:11 PM
I don’t want to make light of it, but their behavior really does remind me of a serious version of Kent Brockman’s “new insect overlords” line on the Simpsons.
They’re simply trying to be good dhimmis.

Speaking of failing anti american cable news networks:
Broadcasting & Cable.com reports that “NBC U has been considering drastic measures, including scrapping all of MSNBC’s live programming and switching to a taped, magazine-like format, while switching successful personalities Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann over to sibling CNBC’s primetime slate.”
Found that at Rathergate.

It seems just when you think CNN can go no lower. They openly brag (via Jordan Eason) about promoting Saddam’s propoganda lines in order to be the “only” ones with access..WHY do they still have ANY credibility?
Oh, I forgot, they are not FOX.
This borders on treason..aiding and abetting the enemy.
DISGUSTING!

One wonders how CNN would feel if someone replayed over and over again the murder of one of their reporters ?
To show their families over and over again their death ?
Wouldnt that also be “news” ?
William Amos on October 19, 2006 at 12:25 PM
Didn’t our military get in trouble a few years back when they shot someone in a house they raided while the camera was rolling?
But it’s ok to show jihadis shooting our soldiers. Fantastic.

If that vid was taken in 05′ and the shot made at 500 yards(a stretch for a Dragunov(I own one, I know), but not our M40’s), it may be that the shooter is already D.E.A.D.

Comrades,
I think that the sobriquet “Caliphate News Network” is the most appropriate I have heard in a long while. I blocked the channel in my house so my kids wouldn’t accidentally be exposed to it, and am lobbying hard to get it taken out of our school system’s TV News programming, on the grounds that they are both a propoganda enabler for our enemies, and promoting hate crimes through their anti-American bias.
Respects,

It seems CNN, much like Ted Turner, can’t decide which side it’s on just yet.
Why are they showing this sort of thing now? These sorts of videos have been around for quite awhile.
In my opinion this is CNN’s attempt to none-too-subtly drive the point home to swing voters what an intractable mess Iraq is and how they better get the Dems in office to get us the hell out of there.
Beyond disgusting.

On the CNN report with the American sniper commenting about the video, everytime the jihadist’s video is on the screen, there is a banner that reads “insurgency video” The placement on the screen is such that the CNN logo directly follows the “insurgency video” label. Seems appropriate to tie the two together. Their whole reporting should be labeled insurgency video.
Mallard T. Drake on October 19, 2006 at 12:53 PM
It is Tet all over again.
Denny Green’s Monday Night meltdown could well summarize the Iraqi war. “They are who we thought they were, and we let ‘em off the hook”. The same goes for the press.
It is now time to siege (and subsequently level) the Sunni Triangle, Roman Legion style.

I have told democrats and Liberals I have no problem with them dislike GW or arguing that the invasion of Iraq is a mistake.
That said I have a big problem with them using US soldiers deaths to arguing that their point of veiw is right. How is that any different than Al Queda using US soldier’s deaths for propaganda purposes ?
yet here CNN uses thier network and beams this story all over the world. They take actual AL Queda propaganda and spread it to billions of people.
How does showing our soldiers murder by Islamic thugs a good thing ? How does this benefit our country ?
How can someone sitting safely far away from the war in Iraq show the deaths of those fighting for freedom and still look themselves in the mirrior at night ?
If you want to oppose US policy fine but doing the enemy’s propaganda for them is not the way to do that.
Could CNN justify showing Nazi propaganda films ? Would it have been alright to get from the Nazis propaganda films showing German troops killing US troops during WWII ?
You dont just post the news that is why they have editors. You have to have enough sense to know the context of the story.
CNN shows that its only concern in this story was to get the terrorists POV out.
That is the only benefit to this kind of story.

I look forward to the day when throngs of Americans protest in front of CNN’s headquarters…. but that will never happen, because those who have the brains to realize what CNN is doing are too busy working and leading their lives.
That’s where we are at a disadvantage to the heathen masses who protest the war, etc. They have no responsibilities, just “rights.”
They give me a pain in the ass.

BigB on October 19, 2006 at 1:15 PM
Is it really that shocking to anyone that CNN would present this type of disgusting video as news? Video of journalists being beheaded was off their plate because their brothers were only doing their jobs to “inform” us of the depressing situations in Iraq. They were innocents in the wrong place at the wrong time. Showing an insurgent with our Marines and/or soldiers in the crosshairs is fair game because they (CNN) apparently consider our military to be the evil armed aggressors; just as the
islamo-fascistsfreedom fighters want the world to believe. What a great way to attempt to draw attention away from the fact that Fox News is whooping their ass in the ratings? With sensationalism comes curiosity. To my fellow Marine brothers and sisters…..Semper Fi

Finally, a bit of intelligence! I agree with democracy definitely helping, but we shouldn’t we focus on the non-democratic middle eastern allies we already have, and try to get them to be more democratic? Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, and the UAE are all authoritarian regimes, yet we haven’t forced our democracy experiment on them. Plus, Pakistan was a democracy, until our friend Musharaff took over in a military coup. Our democracy policy is at the least full of hipocrasy, at the most, a cover story for other interests.

I love the word sobriquet. Everyone needs to use that word more.
Hey, I just used the CNN “tell us what you think” link at MM.com and gave them some feedback. I thought I’d share it with you:
Don’t you think that showing video of U.S. troops getting sniped in Iraq is, you know, doing the terrorists’ propaganda work for them? I don’t mean to question anybody’s patriotism or whatever, but it REALLY seems ignorant for a news outlet like CNN to broadcast this video without acknowledging that you’re complicit in the terrorist media strategy. It’s common knowledge that al Qaeda and the like think that they benefit when footage like this is publicized, and that they intentionally use Western media to spread violent imagery with the expressed desire of demoralizing the American public into abandoning the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It would nice if CNN would acknowledge this next time you run a story like that. A disclaimer like: “This footage is designed by reactionary relgious supremacist groups to cause distress to the average American news viewer, with the intent that you petition your public officials to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq and Afghanistan.” Well, you might not want to be so wordy, but you get the drift. Cheers.

Leftist BigB wrote:

“Just ticked up to 72 dead US soldiers this month – nice work, Patriots!”
Leftists have this strange notion that the people who pulling the triggers and killing our troops are somehow not responsible for their actions. These bitter, foolish and evil people, for some reason, think that they can shift the blame from the killers of our troops to those who support them as they fight for us.
Looking down at my hands, I see no blood. I see no guilt or shame, when I look into a mirror, in supporting the overthrow of Saddam Hussein or in supporting the fight against the same Jihadist terrorists OVER THERE IN IRAQ who blew up the World Trade Center in New York City.
I feel no shame in supporting my country in a time of war, either. Contrarywise, I feel pride in knowing that my fellow citizens (including my son) are putting their lives on the line to secure freedom for the Iraqi people that American blood purchased for them. I consider what they do to be a noble effort, one worthy of America.
Yes, I grieve at the loss of our valiant soldiers and marines. As the father of a US Marine, my heart goes out to the families of those have fallen.
But I do know who is doing the killing. Unlike fools and liars like BigB. It is the enemy, not the people back home supporting our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Truth be told, I feel nothing but anger and contempt at people like BigB who GLOAT our our casualties; who gleefully celebrate our losses as if this is all a juvinile game of self-rightous gotcha.
Adults, and this leaves out fools and liars like BigB, understand that in war, we will suffer casualties and that the enemy is trying to kill our sons and daughters — just as they tried to kill us, in our largest city and capital, and who would kill us in our homes, in America, they way they are killing the Iraqi people.
Parents of people serving in the military (like me) sincerely hope that people like BigB, whose right to comment is not at all in question here, stay far away from us in “meatspace.” ‘Cause not all of us military parents are able to resist the temptation to bitch slap such silly little gloating gits into next Tuesday.
Have a nice conservative day, BigB, knowing that you wear the contempt of the rest of us.

Godspeed to your son georgej, and to all our sons and daughters in harms way. If not for them where would we all be?

CNN says that it had “obtained the tape through an intermediary from the Islamic Armies of Iraq”.
News Flash for CNN…A propaganda film is something that they WANT to be shown. No need to go through an intermediary. When will you wake up and realize that you’re being used.
Thanks for being there for the
terroristsinsurgents and giving them. What would they do without you!!!HarryStar on October 19, 2006 at 2:45 PM
How very surprising: CNN=The Left-Leaning Tower of Horse%#@&. Good thing we didn’t have these clowns around during WW II. Can you imagine the headlines from our bombing of Dresden, etc.? Der Meister Turner may be gone from CNN, but his heresy lives on. Thank God for Fox News and HotAir.
