Can’t See MSNBC: Cable net moving to 30 Rock

It’s been the headline at Drudge all day:

NBC Universal said Thursday it would cut 700 jobs and streamline its news operations as part an overhaul aimed at exploiting new forms of electronic distribution. NBC, a unit of General Electric Co., said it expects the revamp to save $750 million in operating expenses by 2008. The job cuts would represent about 5% of its workforce.

As part of the changes, NBC’s long-struggling 24-hour cable news channel MSNBC will move its operations to NBC’s headquarters in Manhattan’s Rockefeller Center and also to another NBC facility in Englewood Cliffs, N.J

Surprisingly, TV Newser has been on top of this rumor-turned-reality all day.

Speaking of rumors, will Chris Matthews move back to CNBC with The Tan Man? Or perhaps Olby will be one of the 700 people canned. One can only hope.

I, for one, question the timing.

Or… they finally got what was coming with the low ratings and everything…

Yeah… that’s probably it.

Watch them make Olbermann the head of NBC news as part of restructuring.

Bellicose Muse on October 19, 2006 at 9:03 PM

If Olby was fired would anyone notice?

Wade on October 19, 2006 at 9:05 PM

What’s the over/under on how many shows before Olby blames all this on either the President or Bill O’Reilly?

Mallard T. Drake on October 19, 2006 at 9:06 PM

If Olby was fired would anyone notice?

Wade

If Olberdouche had another special comment, would anybody in America notice? Beside his mother and the Kossacs?

batperez on October 19, 2006 at 9:14 PM

Oh, I forgot.
HA and AP will take care of letting us know for our viewing pleasure…

Gag me with a spoon!!!!!!!!!

batperez on October 19, 2006 at 9:14 PM

If they keep Olbermann he’ll only last another two years. When Bush’s presidency is over, Olbermann is unemployed.

V15J on October 19, 2006 at 9:23 PM

I’ll never forget old what’s his name.

Wade on October 19, 2006 at 9:24 PM

NBC in general sucks. Remember when they had sports and good cartoons on Saturday mornings? How poorly can a network perform for 20 years and still be in business?

They could grab a large audience if they played the middle, or gave Michelle a show…Well not “gave”, any show Michelle gets will have been earned.

Theworldisnotenough on October 19, 2006 at 9:24 PM

Most of the MSNBC anchors could be replaced with a magic 8 ball and I don’t think you could tell the difference.

thedecider on October 19, 2006 at 9:28 PM

PLEASE let’s lose Olby! If there are any tv gods, make this happen!

CrimsonFisted on October 19, 2006 at 9:34 PM

I’ll never forget old what’s his name.

And yet, I worry about Ian. Debunking Olberman–It’s been a fair smack of his life’s work.

MSNBC puts a conservative on. They put him or her on to cause controversy and fire them, sayins “see what happens when we put one of them on”

StuLongIsland on October 19, 2006 at 9:41 PM

I can see moving the idiot, but I am rather surprised at moving Matthews. I can’t watch him as his voice gives me a headache, but eventhough I don’t agree with his politics, he is an accredited newsperson…that to me was a silly decision.

Pam on October 19, 2006 at 10:09 PM

More to the point, Matthews is what the majority of accredited MSM news people wish to be. Unapologetically liberal.

If MSNBC ever gets its head out of its hind quarters they will be offering MM a job, and show Fox that they can compete.

DannoJyd on October 19, 2006 at 11:00 PM

NBC Universal said Thursday it would cut 700 jobs

The Best news I’ve heard all day.

Maxx on October 19, 2006 at 11:32 PM

I smell a rat. I’ll bet they are loving the love fest the far left is having over Olby so much they are going to make him a major part of whatever they are doing.

Benaiah on October 19, 2006 at 11:37 PM

NBC Universal said Thursday it would cut 700

Let me rephrase that… This is the best news I’ve ever heard from NBC.

Maxx on October 19, 2006 at 11:38 PM

See ya later, Andrea Mitchell?

SouthernGent on October 19, 2006 at 11:42 PM

Will Olberman still sponsor the litter cleanup along Route 3 in Secaucus??

skwired on October 20, 2006 at 12:43 AM

Let’s see, Air America, MSNBC, Dow over 12,000, unemployment down, gasoline prices down, Harry Reid, etc.

And the Cards beat the Mets.

Dems over Repubicans?

Yeah, those prognosticators are batting .1000 fer sure. (insert sarcasm here)

There is a God after all…

kevcad on October 20, 2006 at 1:33 AM

Seeing Olbermann get fired will be sweet when it eventually happens, but that won’t be the most interesting part of his career trajectory. No, that’ll come when he somehow manages to get fired from ranting on a street corner.

Sean M. on October 20, 2006 at 3:19 AM

Ain’t capitalism great!!!!

NPR should be next.

Hening on October 20, 2006 at 6:44 AM

I believe that CNN will be the next to take a hit. NPR is much like most social programs. It takes a real effort to rein those in.

DannoJyd on October 20, 2006 at 1:02 PM

I’m pretty sure that MSNBC is moving Olberman to Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, as that would be the logical place to stage a fictional, yet unfunny comedy show.

Karl on October 20, 2006 at 3:30 PM

MSNBC puts a conservative on. They put him or her on to cause controversy and fire them, sayins “see what happens when we put one of them on”

Didn’t they do this exact thing with Michael Savage?

or was that your point?
