Olbermann: Bush is the real enemy (Update: Olbgasm added)

posted at 10:46 pm on October 18, 2006 by Allahpundit

The bigger their lead gets — and it’s getting awfully big — the more nervous the left becomes. From the Nation to the CNN newsroom to Josh “I question the timing” Marshall, perennial losers are indulging the paranoiac within like Cubs fans with a lead in the bottom of the ninth of Game 7 of the World Series. Or rather, of the NLCS.

The Cubbies in the Series is a bit too far-fetched for this metaphor.

Should they worry? Maybe! But that’s why it’s good that they have Keith. With stress running high, they need release. And what better outlet than the fortnightly Bush-bashing “special comment” Olbgasm?

The prose, she is … purple.

We have lived as if in a trance.

We have lived as people in fear.

And now–our rights and our freedoms in peril–we slowly awake to learn that we have been afraid of the wrong thing.

Therefore, tonight have we truly become the inheritors of our American legacy.

For, on this first full day that the Military Commissions Act is in force, we now face what our ancestors faced, at other times of exaggerated crisis and melodramatic fear-mongering:

A government more dangerous to our liberty, than is the enemy it claims to protect us from.

***

We have a long and painful history of ignoring the prophecy attributed to Benjamin Franklin that “those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

But even within this history we have not before codified the poisoning of habeas corpus, that wellspring of protection from which all essential liberties flow.

You, sir, have now befouled that spring.

You, sir, have now given us chaos and called it order.

You, sir, have now imposed subjugation and called it freedom.

Lots more at the link. How predictable was it all? Olbermann Watch debunked it before the show aired.

One minor disappointment: still no suggestion from Olby that Bush orchestrated 9/11. We’ve been patient. How much longer must we wait?

Update: “Olbgasm” is a Johnny Dollar coinage, by the way. Wish I could take credit for it, but alas.

Update (Ian): As always, click the schmuck to watch:

If you want to see the full clip, just go to one of Olbermann’s propaganda sites. You know where to find ‘em.

i was laughing at the reaction of the Cubs fans when the Cubs lost games 6 & 7 of the 2003 NLCS. i wish i had taped both of those games. man, i wish that i was that guy who cost the Cubs a trip to the World Series that year. i would have gone on national t.v. & said this – “Yes, i’m the one who intentionally deflected that ball so Alou wouldn’t catch it, so the loser Cubs wouldn’t go to the World Series”

A government more dangerous to our liberty, than is the enemy it claims to protect us from.

A government more dangerous to our liberty than the enemy from which it claims to protect us.

… doesn’t even do “pretentious” right.

Most people don’t realize that large pieces of coral, which have been painted brown and attached to the skull by common wood screws, can make a child look like a deer.

Therefore, tonight have we truly become the inheritors of our American legacy.

DaveS on October 18, 2006 at 11:45 PM

CRAP! This would have been a better channeling of Handy…

We have a long and painful history of ignoring the prophecy attributed to Benjamin Franklin that “those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

We tend to scoff at the beliefs of the ancients. But we can’t scoff at them personally, to their faces, and this is what annoys me.

DaveS on October 18, 2006 at 11:47 PM

Allah, the word really should be an “Olbergasm”. The word needs a vowel movement, otherwise it sounds somewhat consopated.

Jewel on October 18, 2006 at 11:49 PM

Has anyone ever done a professional psychological profile of Olbermann? The man sounds positively insane.

Rusty Bill on October 18, 2006 at 11:51 PM

That MSNBC poll only sampled “registered voters”. I’m a member of my gym, but it doesn’t mean I go!

I question the timing of all these polls about a “blue wave”. 52% is hardly a political tsunami.

But even within this history we have not before codified the poisoning of habeas corpus, that wellspring of protection from which all essential liberties flow.

Do any of these idiots even hear themselves?

I guess for one thing he never heard of Abraham Lincoln and the suspension of habeas corpus for, you know, actual *citizens.*

Allah, the word really should be an “Olbergasm”. The word needs a vowel movement, otherwise it sounds somewhat consopated.

Second that. “Olgasm” works better too, but is a bit too short to convey full meaning.

Then he’d have an excuse to act like his panties are in a knot!

georgej on October 19, 2006 at 12:37 AM

Bartman litterly had to lie low for a while after he INTERFERED with Alou’s play on the ball.

The poor man was the object of considerable anger from long suffering Cub fans. While I was rooting for the Cubs in that game, and while I was disappointed that that single play changed the momentum against the Cubs, the anger and hatred at Bartman was unjustified, IMHO. After all, it’s just a game….

But, I would like to state, for the record, that before I pass on to the great beyond, I’d like to see a cross town World Series between the Sox and the Cubs.

Oh. One last thing.

Thankyouverymuch

By making sense, you mean putting his opinion out there as fact? I seem to see a lot more of that these days from the left. Too bad the facts always come back to haunt them.

entagor on October 19, 2006 at 11:33 AM

Ebeniezer, be specific. In what way have we lost some of our freedoms?

Have you felt a pinch from the Patriot Act, FISA, or SWIFT?

I have not.

If Democrats take control of the house you’ll feel the pinch…in your wallet. Wanna talk about losing freedom? What about the freedom of discretion of your hard earned money? The govt taxes it before you even get a paycheck, they devised a parallel tax system (AMT) to catch the law abiding people who pay their state, local and property taxes, and when you die, they’ll take another piece, especially if you’re an evil conservative who do such awful things like start businesses and create jobs.

budorob on October 19, 2006 at 11:37 AM

Dr Janice Lester, OMG!! talk about obscure reference!! thats too good..

Viper1 on October 19, 2006 at 11:47 AM

budorob, I believe that we’ve had parts of our constitution re-intepreted for the sake of an a-symetric war. Habieus was indeed suspended during Lincoln’s presidency, however, I believe the US Civil War was a far more perilous time than our current GWOT, prime example being that combatants were literally being rounded up in fields in Virginia. I do not believe however that there is an imenent threat of invasion posed by islamo-facists, again, that’s just my opinion.

Your second point about your freedom of discretionary spending seems like a reach to me. While I do agree that we are over-taxed for programs which I have no desire to fund, I cannot as a citizen decide where each of my pennies go, therefore, maybe one of pennies is going to general Dynamics for a Tomahawk, maybe another is going to some loser for food stamps. Maybe we should cut spending first and go from there?

ebeniezer on October 19, 2006 at 11:50 AM

…I believe the US Civil War was a far more perilous time than our current GWOT…

I realize you believe that, but you’re wrong.

This guy is trying SOOOOOOOO hard to be Edward R. Murrow. It’s positively disgusting. I seriouisly got queezy trying to stomach that video.

SillyRyno on October 19, 2006 at 12:02 PM

I agree on spending. Reagan said that congress was spending money like drunken sailors…but at least drunken sailors spend their own money.

Invasion is not their plan. It’s all about big targets, like say…the WTC, the Pentagon, The Capitol. Our enemies shield themselves behind groups of people, hide out in mosques, and use UN relief worker ambulances to sneak their bombs into pizza joints and shopping malls. I’d certainly be with you if the Administration hyped up intelligence about an invasion and used it to impugn our basic liberties. Totally different situation then what we’re facing today.

The problem is as you say, Lincoln was literally rounding up combatants in Virginia. We don’t even have that possibility today. But Lincoln was a clever man, and absolutely one of pure moral fiber. It was truly a constitutional crisis in 1862, but a few years later, the same man pushed the 13th ammendment through a 19th century congress, and was killed before he could see it ratified by the states.

I think you missed my point on taxes. Allocating my tax money is not my job. That’s for elected officials. However, taxes is the one issue that finally turned a colony into our country today. But you’re right b/c I’m crazy about taxes. I follow Milton Friedman. When you cut taxes, it pulls the leash on government spending…the revenues aren’t there to be spent! It forces our legislature to spend wisely. But basic fiscal policy in a recovery period (i.e. 2001 after 9/11, corporate fraud, stock bubble burst) says to cut taxes and increase spending. Yes, that creates an automatic deficit, but it works, and the current reports prove it.

FYI: the last Democrat to cut taxes was JFK in 1960.

Oh, and Keith, Wilson’s Campaign in 1916, was based on this: “He Kept us out of their War!” If I recall, Wilson demanded this and got it from Congress:

Espionage Act of 1917 and the Sedition Act of 1918

Compare those to the current Patriot Act.

The more you know. (wink)

The only reason idiot Kieth Olbermann has a TV job, is because of the good grace of his dad being attached to the business. Otherwise, he’d been a homeless bag person pushing a shopping basket around L.A., or at the least, flipping burgers! With the sorriest TV ratings, the poor sick slob just doesn’t know how good he really has it. Allah be “Olbergasmed,” maybe we’ll all get lucky if Kieth were included in the latest NBC Peacock lay offs.

RobG on October 19, 2006 at 1:42 PM

Budorob wrote: “Lincoln was literally rounding up combatants in Virginia.”

Er, actually it was Maryland, The nation’s capital was located in a slave state that didn’t succeed, but with many among its population sympathetic to the South, some of whom were committing acts of sabotage. But other than this minor detail, you have it exactly correct. And the other points you make are on target.

For a detailed explanation of how and why Lincoln suspended Habeas and how the nation dealt with civil liberty during wartime in other wars, get a copy of All the Laws but One: Civil Liberties in Wartime by the late US Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist.

Not only will knowing the history of civil liberty during war time enlight you, but it will calm the unease that many feel about going down a slippery slope with the Patriot Act and the war on terrorism.

You see, it is the American people who defend liberty, not the government, and it is always the American people who insist that any suspension of civil liberties be temporary, for the duration of the emergency, AND WHO INSIST UPON THE RESTORATION when the emergency is past.

It is not wrong to be concerned, as ebeniezer clearly is. But such concern should be leavened with the understanding that we have been there before, and that liberty is not as fragile as one might think. Nor are Americans the “sheeple” that some on the left assume.

WHY ARE WE TRYING TO PROTECT FREAKING TERRORISTS?

lgodfrey88 on October 19, 2006 at 2:54 PM

Georgej, gotta get that book asap!!

People are the sovereign, and we here in PA have recent proof of that.

We had a constitutional crisis when the governor signed an immediate pay raise into law. The courts approved it, and coincidentally benefited from it as well. Our constitution prohibits any pay increases for the current term, meaning you have to win re-election to get your raise. So, they decided to call it “un-vouchered expenses”. What’s worse is that they put it into action at 2am. However, the people banded together and in a short time, the pay raise was repealed and the idiots that voted for it lost in the primaries.
