Chavez craves a seat on the Security Council, partly for prestige reasons, partly so that his next foray into nutroots porn will have the biggest possible megaphone. The U.S. is backing Guatemala as an alternative.
124 votes are needed to win. Through six rounds:
Guatemala 109, Venezuela 76
Guatemala 114, Venezuela 74
Guatemala 116, Venezuela 60
Guatemala 110, Venezuela 75
Guatemala 103, Venezuela 83
Guatemala 93, Venezuela 93
A compromise candidate is possible at this point, but the way Venezuela’s trending it might not be necessary.
Whom do we root for? My heart says Guatemala but my head says Hugo!
The revolution will, in fact, be televised: you can watch the balloting live over the web here.
Update: Seventh and eighth rounds are done and trending back Guatemala’s way.
Guatemala 96, Venezuela 89
Guatemala 102, Venezuela 85
If you missed Chavez’s UN speech last month, video lowlights are here.
Update: Ninth round: Guatemala 107, Venezuela 81.
Update: Tenth round: Guatemala 110, Venezuela 77. The vote will continue tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.

Maybe Jimmy Carter could monitor the voting. Venezuela would win for sure!

How many freaking rounds of votes are there?
Jay on October 16, 2006 at 5:42 PM
As many as they need until someone gets 124.
Allahpundit on October 16, 2006 at 5:45 PM
I don’t know the rules - can they add a 3rd one?
Entelechy on October 16, 2006 at 6:06 PM
Entelechy, the link that Allah supplied tells the story.
I hope that Bolton’s efforts to keep Venezuela out succeeds for the common good.

Thanks Danno - have to read tonight. I hope you will be right, so as to spare us multiple spectacles in the U.N. We have plenty there as is.
Entelechy on October 16, 2006 at 6:17 PM
Wow, they really are democrats…vote over and over and over.
SouthernGent on October 16, 2006 at 6:29 PM
Entelechy, I predict that the day will come when you realize the U.N. is broken, cannot be fixed, and needs to go. I say let them move it to Hugo’s neighborhood.
DannoJyd on October 16, 2006 at 6:31 PM
bloody hell
get someone else on there
Defector01 on October 16, 2006 at 6:31 PM
SouthernGent, a majority of U.N. delegates find 2 things in NY that they cannot get at home. Pretty hookers and the chance to vote, thus they do both regularly when here. :oP

It could go on for months. How is that for building confidance in the UN?
labwrs on October 16, 2006 at 6:39 PM
it takes 2/3 of those present and voting —
how do we draw the Chavez crowd outside, so they miss the vote?

It’s not looking good for Hugo - especially after all that money he spent trying to buy votes.

Danno, that day passed years ago. I think absolutely nothing of the U.N. and the potentates who dwell in it. I even know people who work in its large compound in Vienna and I could tell you stories, all negative and hypocritical. The last 5 years have killed off the last 10% of indulgence I had left for them.
The difference btw. your (and many other HOT AiR commenters’) stand and mine (and others’ here) is that I/we believe in its complete demise and not just moving it. In other words, the U.S. should leave it, before they move…I explained the reasons several times, but a few are:
- we pay a lot and they all have the same voting power
- if we think they’re brutally against every U.S. move now, imagine if they were in, say, Caracas
- here we can easier spy on them
- being the host in N.Y. is very powerful
Anyway, get rid of the U.N. and I won’t cry a single tear. It’s a different world order since it was established and change needs to happen either in its charter, financing, structure, council/s, etc. or all. As is it’s completeley worthless and much suffering goes on due to its idiosyncratic everything. Annan was the most worthless piece of s–t to cap it.
Entelechy on October 16, 2006 at 11:13 PM
So what’s the big deal? Why is everyone so concerned about this? It’s not like there’s any concern that Venezuela is going to get on the Security Council and ruin the UN’s sterling reputation as a preventer of war, barbarism and totalitarianism, after all.
Truth be told, we really should move the UN out of New York. My personal vote goes to one of those secret prisons in Eastern Europe where soldiers torture inmates for fun.
