Bush: God told me we would win

Nah, I’m kidding. I just wanted our liberal readers to read the post. It was Ahmadinejad who said it. See, guys? You can relax now.

Incidentally, is there trouble in paradise?

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei seems to be trying to gain control from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is emerging as his rival, says a report.

As part of that effort, Khamenei has ordered the creation of a foreign policy council that would be solely responsible to the ruling cleric, reports the Middle East Newsline. Khamenei said the Strategic Council for Foreign Relations is meant to facilitate decisions on foreign policy, the report said…

Some analysts told the MENL the new council could become Khamenei’s back channel to the United States, which is leading other Western nations to have Iran end its uranium enrichment program.

Radio Free Europe had the same take back in June. Does the creation of the council really mean Khamenei’s working at cross purposes with Ahmadinejad, though? Forcing the UN to deal with a two-track diplomatic apparatus means dragging out nuke negotiations even longer, and potentially lets Iran play a mean game of good cop/bad cop if they’re so disposed. If Khamenei’s that worried about “Mahdi,” he’d simply have him bumped off. Judging by the polls, there wouldn’t be many hearts broken if he did.

The fact that he hasn’t means either (a) the rumors of a power struggle are nonsense, (b) they’re true, but Ahmadinejad’s still useful to the regime as a face of defiance and not so popular with the military that they feel threatened, or (c) they’re true and they do feel threatened, but Ahmadinejad’s consolidated power sufficiently that they’re afraid to move against him. I’m not sure which is the best option there, but I’m pretty sure it isn’t (c).

On a lighter note, the mullahs have gone crazy for blogs! And Debka says they’re planning to launch a preemptive strike on our fleet in the Gulf later this month!

Oh man. My heart dropped and I thought … “please not again.”

I’m not sure a preemptive strike is a good idea for them. If it happens, I’m calling my detailer.

PRCalDude on October 16, 2006 at 8:46 PM

But it’s okay when someone who is not Bush does it.

Does HotAir have liberal readers?

It’s funny, I still actually have enough faith in Bush that, when I saw this post, I assumed it was a joke.

Does HotAir have liberal readers?

I guess it depends on how one defines ‘liberal’…

RD on October 16, 2006 at 9:31 PM

I’m not surprised. From what I understand, Khamene’i wanted Ahmadinezhad in power so as to consolidate his power. Rafsanjani was not loyal enough to Khamene’i. He probably assumed having Ahmadinezhad would make him the undisputed dictator.

Note that Mohammed Khatami is a cleric (Hojjat el-Islam wal-Muslimeen) as is Rafsanjani (Ayatollah); Ahmadinezhad is not. Many clerics in Iran do not have much respect for Khamene’i, who was not a Grand Ayatollah (Ayatollah al-Uzma) when he became Supreme Leader. Out of respect of his current position people have titled him “Grand Ayatollah,” but it is more out of courtesy. And as such, Khamene’i had little hold over the government. But with his protege in power, who was supposed to follow Khamene’i’s will, he consolidated his hold on the Irani government. That Ahmadinezhad was elected because Khamene’i wanted him to be is without a doubt. One of the factions in Iran most loyal to Khamene’i, the Basiji (religious police), helped sweep Ahmadinezhad into power.

But perhaps he misunderestimated his protege’s desire to act on his initiative.

Good one. How about “The Cask of Ahmadinejado” by Edagar Allan Poe?

I rather like the idea of him getting locked up in a crypt with only the sound of his own voice to keep him company…

EFG on October 16, 2006 at 10:40 PM

Hey! Leave the Cask of Amontillado out of it :)

This I need clarification about:

The supreme ruler continued: “One of the projects of the Americans, Zionists and their allies is to come to Lebanon under the United Nations, officially to defend the Lebanese from the attacks of foreign forces and then change the cards on the table and fight our Hezbollah brothers.”

What’s it mean, “cards?” i.e. poker? The Supreme Ruler plays poker? Maybe those … placeholder cards? I get the idea but I don’t get the expression, from Uber Islam Guy anyway.

… Pokemon?

Here’s what the Lord didn’t tell me:

-since “God” makes more sense as the End Point of the Universe’s torturous striving to cephalization, and not the amoral and chaotic Beginning, it’s up to those of us apperceptively in the struggle to manifest more decency, consciousness, freedom and creativity. All of which we can hope will incarnate such a Deity. Not to pretend to speak for the Creator.

Working to substantiate its truest qualities, by active example, in the hope of ultimately evoking it as the Aware Soul of All, seems more in line with the upwardly-rising behavior of this World than any Original Perfection.

The opposite impulse- seeking slavery, submission, intellectual paralysis, anti-inquiry, resentment and hatred- conjures such a decent and caring Creator’s negative: a Demonic It.

(Better known as Allah, to those who have read his Arabic autobiography.)

Just a thought after chuckling at AP’s witty headline.

(Bush and Barney were overheard pursuing a similar line of thought, recently, although the exact language may have been a little different. And a pooper scooper apparently ended the dialogue.)

God only talks to Pat Robertson on our side of the spectrum.

SouthernGent on October 16, 2006 at 11:39 PM

If Bush says it, he’s a radical Christian trying to impose his far right radical Christianity on the rest of us. If terrorists and their sympathizers say it, it’s another culture that we have to be sensative to and accept and maybe even practice to get an understanding of these other great cultures.

RightWinged on October 16, 2006 at 11:41 PM

Your joke brings up an interesting question. Did God just not go into details about whether or not Bush would be successful?

God: George. Finish the job in Iraq.
Bush: Shucks… you think we can win that sort of war?
God: Dude, you’re breaking up… I’m going into a tunn– CLICK

Suspending enrichment would be great, however given the current world powers situation why should they?

What will actually happen if they don’t?
Russia wants the cash from arms sales and China wants to spend American free trade cash for oil.

So generaly speaking Ahmadinejad could pee in our Cheerios every morning and what are we going to do about it?
Cry to the UN? Pffffft, yeah that’ll work.

If I were Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, I would be going full speed on every nuke program I could think of, both aquiring nukes and producing nukes.
Again, why not?

Speakup on October 17, 2006 at 1:18 AM

Well, since you have invoked HIM …

It occured to me that the death of Page Scandal-Scarred Democrat Gerry Studds was quite timely when taking into account the Foley debacle. I consider that to be a God given gift if there ever was one. :oP

Ha! That was good headline.

vcferlita on October 17, 2006 at 9:29 AM

God only talks to Pat Robertson on our side of the spectrum.

Do you know what is the difference between faith and lunacy?

Faith: You talk to God.
Lunacy: God talks back.

natesnake on October 17, 2006 at 9:30 AM

You sly dog…

When one theocrat hears from God it’s lunacy. When another hears from God it’s divine intervention. I guess it all dependes upon which side you are on.

The lefty black helicopter crowd is already predicting that we’re going to attack one of our own ships in a false flag op, to give us an excuse to attack Iran before the elections. If they see this Debka article, they’ll think it’s all a Bu$hitlerzionazi plot.

juliesa on October 17, 2006 at 12:18 PM

AP,

Ever since Bryan did that post about Jihad as the Muslim reformation a month ago, you’ve been bringing up religion a lot. Almost daily in fact. Are you thinking about this personally or just enjoying stirring the pot?

Just curious.
