Time exclusive: Khaled Sheikh Mohammed beheaded Daniel Pearl

According to U.S. officials. And guess what:

The officials tell TIME that KSM confessed under CIA interrogation that he personally committed the murder. Moreover, when he faces a military tribunal at Guantanamo, perhaps as soon as next year, the U.S. plans to charge him not only with the 9/11 plot, but also with direct responsibility for Pearl’s death.

How can they try him for it, though? Information obtained by coercive interrogation is always unreliable.

Right?

One former U.S. national security official tells TIME there is no doubt that KSM personally wielded the knife that killed the Wall Street Journal reporter…

The FBI deduced KSM’s role only after analyzing a video of the crime, in which only the perpetrator’s hands are visible. That video was released by Islamic militants soon after Pearl’s murder and then widely shown on Arab television and the Internet. Eventually, the FBI obtained its own version of the original video, as well as the camera used to photograph the murder.

Once KSM was taken into custody in March 2003, a comparison of the hands shown in the video and KSM’s own hands, along with other evidence, confirmed the FBI’s suspicions. Then, under interrogation, KSM confessed, national security officials told TIME, admitting without remorse that he personally severed Pearl’s head and telling interrogators he had to switch knives after the first one “got dull.”

Remember: “torture” never works. Except when it does.

Even Hillary knows that.

Speaking of which, Dhiren Barot pleaded guilty to terrorism charges today in London. According to the Counterterrorism Blog, “Barot planned ‘the Gas Limos Project’ to explode three limousines ‘packed’ with gas cylinders and explosives in underground car parks in the UK as part of a wider bombing campaign there, which would include the use of a radioactive bomb.” So who’s Dhiren Barot? Quote:

In the recently published report by the September 11 commission, Barot is identified under another name—Issa al-Britani, a veteran Al Qaeda operative who was dispatched by September 11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed to case economic and “Jewish” targets in New York City in early 2001.

Even more intriguing, Barot, as al-Britani, is mentioned in an obscure footnote elsewhere in the report as having been dispatched by Khalid Shaikh Mohammed to fly to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in late 1999 or early 2000 to meet with Hambali, the notorious Asian terrorist who heads Jemaah Islamiah, an Al Qaeda affiliate dedicated to overthrowing the governments of Southeast Asia and replacing them with a pan-Islamic state.

How do we know so much about him? Well, in part because Khaled Sheikh Mohammed told us:

After his arrest and preliminary interrogation, Dhiren Barot, who reportedly embraced Islam in 1992, has been projected in some reports as a leading Al Qaeda operative of the UK and in some others as the head of Al Qaeda set-up in the UK.It has also been stated that Barot alias Bilal is none other than al-Britani mentioned by KSM during his interrogation. and that he had been visiting the tribal areas near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border as well as J&K.

See also this Fox report from 2004.

Word came down this morning that the Red Cross has been to see him lately.

I sure hope he’s okay.

I wonder if Angelia Jolie’s currently in production A Mighty Heart will incorporate this news.

The officials tell TIME that KSM confessed under CIA interrogation that he personally committed the murder.

I don’t care if it worked, we’re still violating his constituational rights.

RightWinged on October 12, 2006 at 9:45 PM

I’ve been thinking a lot about this whole torture thing lately. I know that there’s no real, clear, good, digestable solution to the topic. I don’t support torture. I just can’t bring myself to support it. Sorry. If we as a nation torture, I don’t want to hear anything about other nations doing it. It just doesn’t sit well with me.

TheThink on October 12, 2006 at 9:46 PM

Really? Which ones?

Allahpundit on October 12, 2006 at 9:46 PM

Amen.

TheThink on October 12, 2006 at 9:47 PM

AP, I haven’t read all the links in the thread yet, but I sure will in a bit.

The picture of this pig and his face tell all. I wish desperately that Khaled Sheikh Mohammed would have been executed upon discovering him. It pains me to see this pighead and to know that he dwells in our system and might not be gored.

Another Schweinehund who still consumes air.

Entelechy on October 12, 2006 at 9:48 PM

And under which Constitution do his rights fall under? The United States Constitution was designed to protect Americans, not the foreigners who kill Americans.

wryteacher on October 12, 2006 at 9:52 PM

A little Toga Party shuld lift the spirits of KSM.

Sarcasm… or righteous? Quick, answer before I lose all respect for you amigo!

If you’re being righteous, then please, pray tell what “constitutional rights” were violated…

I know this question wasn’t directed at me, but what do you think of Hamdan v. Rumsfeld? The MCA all but took a large dump on that, no?

I just don’t understand why torture is even being debated. And for only 10 hours in Congress, at that. How does that make sense when the Marriage Protection Act was debated for 3 days?!

TheThink on October 12, 2006 at 9:58 PM

lol, sorry guys that was sarcasm. I knew I should have made that clear, but I thought I’d see if I’d get a reaction.

RightWinged on October 12, 2006 at 9:59 PM

to be clear, I don’t think we’ve even seen torture anyway, just coercive interrogation.

RightWinged on October 12, 2006 at 10:00 PM

I just don’t understand why torture is even being debated…

TheThink on October 12, 2006 at 9:58 PM

For this guy, it shouldn’t even be debated for more than 5 min. after which he should be executed. Yes, yes, I know it’s an abstract at this point. Too bad!

Entelechy on October 12, 2006 at 10:04 PM

Ask the next idiot who complains about the U.S. and torture this question “What would you allow if you had in custody a person with information about the whereabouts of your children who were being held by Islamic thugs who announced the children would be beheaded in 24 hours?”

Wade on October 12, 2006 at 10:12 PM

When is the movie about Daniel Pearl coming out? I thought I heard something about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie? is that true?

Ha, I hear ya pullingmyhairout, but while I was looking for a reaction to my joke on this, I was actually surprised at how many didn’t know it was a joke. I thought people knew me better around here. Put yourself in my shoes on this one, I was rolling laughing when I saw everyone start tripping out that I had said that. I wish I had let it go longer now, that was great.

RightWinged on October 12, 2006 at 10:15 PM

I knew you were kidding. after a few glasses of wine, i’ve chilled a bit.

pullingmyhairout on October 12, 2006 at 10:17 PM

I’m with Entelechy as usual! 5 minutes debate is 4 minutes and 59 seconds too long!

Wade on October 12, 2006 at 10:12 PM

Maybe fire, waterboarding, gauging their eyes out, the rack, something like that…

pullingmyhairout on October 12, 2006 at 10:31 PM

Why are you neo-cons so willing to give up our civil liberties to the Bush regime?

RightWinged on October 12, 2006 at 10:35 PM

The fact that there is a even a debate 5 minutes long over the issue of whether or not these guys are either protected by the United States Constitution or protected as POWs under the Geneva Conventions is a debate 5 minutes too long.

I’m not taking the bait. here you go again.

pullingmyhairout on October 12, 2006 at 10:40 PM

Why are you neo-cons so willing to give up our civil liberties to the Bush regime?

Because I trust of Fuhrer to do the right thing.

tommy1 on October 12, 2006 at 10:41 PM

labwrs, we’ve had Adam Gadahn yesterday and this monster today.

It was explained best in the Gadahn thread, by your request. Thanks EFG.

Schweinehund -

It is German. It litteraly translates to Pig-Dog. Meaning your mother was a pig and your father was a dog. It’s a pretty serious insult in German.

Ha, RW, to the extent that some of us think we know you a little bit, I didn’t fall for it, even though you attempted a 2nd one :) Best regards,

Entelechy on October 12, 2006 at 11:58 PM

Yeah, I was hoping to mess with folks just discovering the thread and missing earlier comments… oh well…

As for the Schweinehund/Pig-dog thing… What about ManBearPig?

RightWinged on October 13, 2006 at 12:10 AM

RW, that’s interesting but by far not as offensive as Schweinehund. It can’t get any worse than this and that’s what applies to this monster and Adam Gadahn.

Btw, it’s all figurative. Not even in legends such an animal exists. It’s just a way of expressing utter disgust!!!

Only a true neocon would hyphenate ‘neocons’

;-)

infidel4life on October 13, 2006 at 12:21 AM

Wouldn’t Adam Gadahn just be pigpig?

Actually, I think schweinenschlampe is more appropriate for him.

theholyhermit on October 13, 2006 at 12:45 AM

Sauschedel or Saukopf, meaning the head of a female pig also go well for Gadahn and the one above.

Entelechy on October 13, 2006 at 1:25 AM

Torture just won’t work. Ever. Nothing EVER comes from waterboarding (where’s that farging sarcasm key?), however, the experience of having your balls removed with a plastic fork WORKS EVERY FRIGGIN’ TIME. Oh, that implies KSM has balls. Sorry, my bad.

james hooker on October 13, 2006 at 4:22 AM

I’m still trying to accept that ManBearPig has an entry in Wikipedia.

And it has a “See Also” of “Cryptozoology.”

I need to write LOL but I just can’t make myself do it.

Axe on October 13, 2006 at 5:05 AM

Personally, I want him beheaded with audio on live TV broadcast to the middle east so all of his buddies can see and hear.

Can’t find an executioner to do it? Afraid to be seen without a executioner’s hood on?

I volunteer. You don’t have to pay me, I’ll do it for free.

tormod on October 13, 2006 at 8:26 AM

It is simply amazing that in a country that can make a show like “24″, which has a main character named Jack Bauer who routinely uses various methods to obtain information from terror suspects ranging from gouging out eyeballs to shooting them in the knee or shoulder, one of the highest rated shows is actually opposed to actual real world application of tactics far less severe. Anybody else see the hypocricy? Cheer Jack Bauer and prosecute and condemn the real world versions.
Borrowing from another movie “Truth, you can’t handle the truth. Deep down in your soul in places you don’t want to admit exist, you are glad there are people like this out there to keep you safe.”

I shall add to this high-minded debate by suggesting schweinscheisse.

Kid from Brooklyn on October 13, 2006 at 10:00 AM

Can someone please tell me when the rest of the world became citizens of the US? Until an individual is actually a citizen of our United States of America that individual HAS NO CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS except as those afforded a guest. If the individual is not actually in the country proper she/he isn’t even a guest! We have international rights through the UN to cover everyone else. What did you say those rights SUCK. No crap! Wake up to the world we have been telling you moon bats about! Fix the world governing body if you don’t like the rules and the way they govern it! But don’t give the World a big US hug unless we also get to govern the rest of the world as our own Empire.

entagor on October 13, 2006 at 11:40 AM

Kid, surely you’re not implying that Adam Gadahn and KSM deserve high-mindedness. I know you’re not.

tormod, I’ll help you.

Priest, thanks for your post. Great reminder for the equivalence-minded.

Entelechy on October 13, 2006 at 12:28 PM

To follow up on LakeRuins thought,

24 and Alias were the two highest weekly rated drama shows of all time. You can dig for days through the cast, crew, and production staff without uncovering a single person who would claim to be right of “center”. And both shows routinely portray torture as the only viable method of finding out what you need to know RIGHT NOW to save lives from certain demise.

I submit that if there was any alternative that a thinking person would believe to be effective in gaining intelligence, they would use it in their shows, and in the movies. That they don’t is suggestive. But hey, rose colored glasses create truth, right?

Freelancer on October 13, 2006 at 12:45 PM

I opt for making this SCUMBAG sit through 3 or 4 weeks of non-stop reruns of ‘The View’. Then finish him off with those same dull knives he used on Daniel Pearl.

EEprom on October 13, 2006 at 12:49 PM

Concerning Russian soldiers and Daniel Pearl, I heard it said that Al Qaeda will soon start in the Taxidermy business (God Bless Americans and American tourists - Prayers for all - Jesus help us) - and even then the Democrats/Liberals won’t get it and will only continue to assist the enemy.

Thirteen28-

Shouldn’t Chimpy McBushitler-Burton be hyphenated, also?

That’s how it was on my ballot in 2004.

Regarding KSMohammad… why not superglue two very heavy Korans to his palms and throw him into a deep vat of pig’s blood and see how long he can swim.

Inshallah.
