Time magazine: Castro has terminal cancer?

Look what just showed up on Google News:

When you follow the link, you get a 404. What happened? Did Time publish, then pull the story back because of some last-minute development?
Or did they publish accidentally, having meant to save a scoop this big for Sunday?
Alas for them: Allah sees all.
We’ll just have to wait.
Oh — there is just one more thing. My RSS reader picked this story up, too. And the precis there contained a detail you won’t find in the Google News teaser:

Keep your eyes on the World section…
Update: That didn’t take long. It’s a little iffy, but hope, like Castro himself, springs eternal:
U.S. officials tell TIME that many in the U.S. government are now convinced that Castro, 80, has terminal cancer and will never return to power. “Certainly we have heard this, that this guy has terminal cancer,” said one U.S. official.
Of course, such intelligence reports could be wrong, and one official cautioned that definitive proof is nearly impossible for the U.S. to come by. Yet the fact that the Cuban government removed Castro from the public stage before his death could suggest that Castro and his would-be successors were aware of a terminal condition and wanted to gauge public reaction to his absence. “They got to see how people would react,” says one U.S. official. “They have had a chance to see how things might work without out him functioning day-to-day.”

How will our religious readers respond, I wonder.

I got it through your link. It is a report on an intelligence report. Not very definitive. Just terminal cancer, no description of his condition.
d1carter on October 7, 2006 at 12:20 AM
The link resolves now…
I do as well. With the knowledge of what that man did to ‘his people’.
middleroad on October 7, 2006 at 12:31 AM
Do you mean in the context of yesterday’s “forgive and forget” thread?
I expect varying degrees of “Ding Dong, the Witch is dead”.
Kid from Brooklyn on October 7, 2006 at 12:33 AM
Any bets he won’t be going to Venezuela for treatment?
SouthernGent on October 7, 2006 at 12:46 AM
The problem with your “Cuba libre” description on the Hot Air home page is that the experiment to see how the people would react to Castro’s being incapacitated was… successful.
Let’s hope I’m wrong and that the new leader, if any, is inept or more in the mold of F.W. de Klerk than Nicolae Caesescu.
Christoph on October 7, 2006 at 1:58 AM
May he rest in peace. Soon.
bdfaith on October 7, 2006 at 2:09 AM
As Michelle would say, “Boo Freakin Hoo”. Not very Christian of me I know. At least I admit it though.
Catie96706 on October 7, 2006 at 2:14 AM
I sort of suspected this when he had the surgery, because they never really said what it was for. But if it’s stomach cancer, he’s as good as dead.
Bye, Fidel!

The link has reappeared as of 1:44AM MDT.
elpresidente on October 7, 2006 at 3:44 AM
Cuba Libre Isnt that just a rum and coke with lime?
This is slightly ridiculous, really. Breaking News: 80 year old man might have terminal condition!!
It will be interesting, though…
HerrMorgenholz on October 7, 2006 at 7:31 AM
He may die a slow, agonizing death from cancer, but at least he has access to free health care… just try that in the United States, smartypants[es]!
RD on October 7, 2006 at 8:05 AM
I hope you die. I hope you die very soon. I’ll be waiting for you to die.
doingwhatican on October 7, 2006 at 8:42 AM
Free health care in Cuba has temporarily been put on hold due to a bandaid shortage.
fogw on October 7, 2006 at 8:44 AM
Ah, I see there’s some good news this morning.
May he suffer greatly.
JammieWearingFool on October 7, 2006 at 9:28 AM
Wish I could listen in when Castro tries to explain his actions standing at the ‘gates’… “uh, sorry , I didnt really mean to , please let me into heaven…please? OH I KNOW, It was FOX’s FAULT!!!”
Down elevator…fade to black.

Castro IS a terminal cancer. Just look what he did to Cuba.
Ropera on October 7, 2006 at 10:36 AM
As one of HotAir’s religious readers I have a bible quote for you from Proverbs 11:10.
The whole city celebrates when the godly succeed; they shout for joy when the godless die.
So, there will be lots of Christians shouting for joy when Castro says Adios. ¡Por fin!

Smoked too many Cubans?
Drtuddle on October 7, 2006 at 10:40 AM
So this is why he has been trying so hard to normalize relations with the U.S. — He wanted acccess to our “non-free” healthcare system…
rmgraha on October 7, 2006 at 11:50 AM
This is one instance when I would support the “death with dignity” cause. Let’s just get it over with. Where is Dr. K? Maybe Castro will be put on a feeding tube and be declared “brain dead.” Then all those commie libs will agree to pull the plug and let him starve to death. And it will be “beautiful.”
Sorry, just having one of my “hateful Republican” moments. ;-)

I’m 42, and that guy has been dying since I was born. I will believe it when I see it!
Pam on October 7, 2006 at 12:03 PM
Well Allah, everyone has to die of something.
pullingmyhairout on October 7, 2006 at 12:10 PM
Well, since the health system in Cuba is reputed to be the best in the world, I am sure he’ll be getting the very best treatment.
/need I?
Bob's Kid on October 7, 2006 at 1:07 PM
Bill, he ain’t gonna be “resting”….
Depends. Real men of God will remind us not to rejoice, but they will also not eulogize the man/monster. The False Teachers and Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing will moan about the world’s loss and praise him as a true man of peace. Think Arafat’s funeral.
ScottG on October 7, 2006 at 1:08 PM
lol! :-D Poetic justice. (Anyone who’s clicked through to my link will know what I’m talking about… if you do it be sure to scroll to the bottom of the page)
And another “medical procedure” provided for free by socialized medicine…
RD on October 7, 2006 at 1:30 PM
Mojave Mark: Right On Brother! I’m a biggie on God’s word.
As a BA Evangelical ‘racist, Islamophobe, homophobe, bible thumpin’, flag waving, patriotic, one hundred percent American, Anglo, internet loving guy I say: “May the bastard burn eternally in hell”. (that is unless he makes a major repentance and as we all know even the worse are accepted at that point. We are not judge; only God does that) But if he doesn’t he will surely go where there is ‘weeping and knashing of teeth.”
What a thrill it would be to see the people of Cuba liberated and there had better be a plan to keep other dick-tators out of there.
Salute’
auspatriotman on October 7, 2006 at 1:39 PM
OH, and btw, look for another ‘Welstone Memorial’ here along with the DBM gushing at what Fidel had done for his people. BaBA WaWA and Rosie O’Donnell to cover as Slick Willy and Dickhead Carter lead the contingent at the funeral services. A place for all the whacks to air their asshat ideologies.
auspatriotman on October 7, 2006 at 1:42 PM
gee, I can’t wait to see VP Cheney at the Havana funeral..
That might be an offical duty he will enjoy.

“For the wages of sin is death…”
CP on October 7, 2006 at 3:33 PM
Well, right now I’m leafing through my Bibles in a frenzy, searching desperately for nuances, ambiguities, contradictions, and “wiggle room” that can be employed in the service of celebrating the shit out of the death of Castro. “Come on, Jesus! SAY SOMETHING ABOUT REVENGE!”
How ’bout the rest of you Christians?
EFG on October 7, 2006 at 3:39 PM
EFG check out my previous post or check out Proverbs 11:10. There’s nothing unchristian or ungodly about celebrating the death of an evil tyrant. Just because we don’t hate our enemies doesn’t mean that we can’t legitimately and properly celebrate their demise.
Mojave Mark on October 7, 2006 at 5:39 PM
With yet another condemnation of the evils of tobacco?
He woulda lived to 120 if not for those damn Cohibas…

No problem. I saw it.

As a newbie here, why is it still called a Revolucion? Seems the revolution was years and years ago, when Castro “took office.” Now Cuba is a communist state and has been for years and years. The “Revolucion” – What the heck is that! When Castro dies and his brother takes over, will it be a revolucion or just a new dictator? Seems like that term should be retired, but it has worked so well with Castro, et al, that I don’t think that will happen! Geez, Cubans, get with the 21st Century.
Neocon Peg on October 8, 2006 at 9:46 PM
Let me see if I can explain it Neocon Peg.
Is this a movement? No, of course not! Hence the name: movement. It moves a certain distance, then it stops, you see? The Cuban revolution gets its name by always coming back around in your face. It never stops. It just keeps revolving and spinning… so welcome to the Cuban revolution.*

The Left will make his funeral “The Funeral of the Century.” I wonder what kind of pyramid-thing “his” people will build for his eternal resting place.
