Video: Outrageously outrageous Chevrolet commercial!

posted at 11:59 am on October 6, 2006 by Allahpundit

The Freepers are trying to kick up some dust about this and now it’s migrated to the Corner, so we might as well post it.

The Katrina stuff isn’t that odd; it’s followed by scenes of housebuilding to show, I guess, the indomitable American spirit. The Nixon farewell is a bit strange, but hey: liberals buy cars, too, guys. For some of us, a slice of cheesecake or beefcake leaning enticingly against the hood might be enough to pique our interest in the product. For others, archival footage of a Republican leaving the White House in disgrace might do the trick.

Sex sells.

If Chevy were smart, they’d partner up with that Bush assassination film and really move some merchandise.

Update: Re: that language about Colbert, I’m 99.9% sure that was added by Jalopnik, the blog the ad on YouTube. That’s, uh, not part of the original commercial. I think.

Blowback

The Stephen Colbert bit was a bit of a indicator of who they are pushing this commercial towards.

Eh…I don’t think it’s pointed at liberals as much as it is intended for the Baby Boomers.

Those nostalgia-loving navel gazers love to see the highlights of their own history.

Question is, what are they going to use to sell cars to my generation – the early thirtysomethings? I sure as heck don’t want to see clips of the Challenger explosion or the Reagan shooting, followed by a Chevy logo.

Sure, liberals buy cars — but Silverados? Not to paint too broad a brush here — I’m sure some ex-Hippies are brawnym, lumber-lugging types — but I have to wonder what’s going on in Chevy’s marketing dep’t.

Very true Slublog. And I have no idea how they want to sell trucks to folks in the 18-35 set.

I don’t really see the big deal. It seems like an inclusive ad to me. The idea is that we are all part of America. If they want to push Chevy’s at the far left, they won’t do it by waving the flag or showing Dale Earnhardt. Just like showing protestors and Nixon is going to tick off righties. At the end of the day, the ad is screaming can’t we all get along to me. Seriously, the idea that this is a disgusting ad is the sign that somebody had too much coffee over at NRO this morning. I like John Miller, but I think he’s reaching on this one.

Did you notice the Towers of Light in there?

Also interesting is the song. It’s a cut from the new Mellencamp album, but this ad is it’s debut. That’s a first.

DU’s had a low level buzz this past week about Hannity working with GM on some contest/giveaway. There were the usual calls to boycott GM/not boycott GM to support the UAW. If only Venezuela made cars… they’d all be driving hybrid Hugo’s.

Seething over minor,if any, infractions. Remind you of another little group of funsters out there?
My take on the ad is the good ,the bad and the ugly, we got it all but we still rock.

Liberals buy cars? But cars are bad! Cars kill animals! Cars heat the Earth!

In the not too distant future, GM will be as faint a memory as Nixon waving from the helecopter as he was leaving the White House. Time marches on and the generations following the “Boomers” have less allegience to strictly American products for so many obvious reasons. GM will join Studebaker, Willys, and so many others who flourished for awhile and then lost to the competition. I long ago lost any sentimental attachement I may have borne for that marquee, such is life.

I actually like that commercial, real cool

Defector01 on October 6, 2006 at 12:38 PM

I swore off General Motors after being SCREWED by them after, not one, but after three brand new GM cars.

The worst when when I broke down in Yonkers and the local GM service department refused to help me.

Then GMAC screwed up my payments and I got calls from the repo guys.

Yeah, if this is Americas car, then I’m glad I bought a Honda.

GM SUCKS!

Kini on October 6, 2006 at 12:58 PM

After GM ruined the song “Like a Rock” for me, at least they used John Cougar Mellonheadcamp’s song. I don’t listen to his stuff.

I’m a southern “Boomer” and drive a Beemer. Does that make me a misfit? ;->

Liberals are already mad at GM for doing ad campaign with Sean Hannity’s show.

but hey: liberals buy cars, too, guys

Goodness, Chevy better hope so. A bunch of crap set to Mellencamp muck.

1980 Baseball, Apple Pie and Cheverolet…..2006 Goofballs, Lemon Pie and Liberal Sway….Times are a changing!

soulsirkus on October 6, 2006 at 3:30 PM

It would be easy to make an alternative version of this commercial with the blue dress, Bush with the bull horn at ground zero, Jimmy Carter getting attacked by the bunny, Saddam on the ground after he was caught, etc.

…how they would howl.

Perchant on October 6, 2006 at 4:04 PM

Chevy has to be careful, they probably sell a lot of trucks to liberal union members. The unions really screw the country over. Most union workers would probably lean conservative if they weren’t getting leaned on by the union leaders.

NTWR on October 6, 2006 at 4:47 PM

I don’t understand the Colbert references.

As usual, GM has a nice fat tin ear. Even when they manage to make something good, they can’t market it for jack squat. Libs buy cars, sure they do. they buy vw microbuses, and honda hybrids, and electric toy cars. They don’t buy chevy trucks; you won’t see a lib nancy-man driving a duramax 2500 pickup with an Allison Transmission. You mention that to a lib, and he’ll think you’re talking about a sex change candidate. No, there was another GM commercial a few weeks back for the H3 that took some shots at the eviroweenies. Florence King wrote about it in the last issue of National Review. She said almost the same thing as Allahpundit did, libs buy cars too; GM must have gotten some beans over that so they posted the above apology with Nixon, and peace marches and all the rest of that rubbish. It won’t help. Libs won’t buy a chevy. If they’ll spend the money, they’ll buy an import. Otherwise, look for them in Volvo 240 stationwagons, covered in rust held together by bumperstickers.
