lol, are you serious? That wouldn’t surprise me, considering what a numbskull he is… but if he truly did that, it’s one of the funniest things I’ve heard in a while.

Excellent explanation Kid, I appreciate that. I kind of assumed, and I hope everyone else did, that he was saying something along those lines and it was a translation thing. I never thought he meant sulfur/fart smell, but it cracks me up to think that maybe a bunch of people did.

Classic:

Chavez didn’t actually say “sulphur”, as quoted by the UN translator; and as crass as he is, I don’t think he meant to imply that W dropped rotten-egg smelling SBDs on the General Assembly the night before.

Since this is a devil-themed post, let me play advocate for a minute.

Chavez didn’t actually say “sulphur”, as quoted by the UN translator; and as crass as he is, I don’t think he meant to imply that W dropped rotten-egg smelling SBDs on the General Assembly the night before.

Here’s where the UN translator screwed up. Chavez actually said “it still smells like brimstone here”, as in the “fire and brimstone” context.

This is Revelation 20:10 from the Reina-Valera 1602 translation, which is like the Spanish-language King James Version.

Y el diablo (devil) que los engañaba, fué lanzado en el lago de fuego y azufre (brimstone), donde está la bestia y el falso profeta; y serán atormentados día y noche para siempre jamás.

And this is how it reads in King James.

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

“Azufre” literally translates as sulphur. Simultaneous translation from Spanish is quite difficult, due to all the regional nuance. Back when I did simultaneous, I waited one or two sentences just to get the context right, while translating real time in my head. Cocky bastard that I am, I was always able to run that kind of delay. However, Chavez’ translator lacked the Kid’s game, and had to go real-time, which results in a more literal translation that is prone to misinterpretation.

If Chavez is addressing the “devil’s” speech the night before, it makes sense to allude to his alleged unwieldy influence over the U.N. by stating that the assembly room still reeks of brimstone.

Don’t get me wrong; Chavez is every bit the Castro-loving, jihadi ass-kissing turd we think he is. This time, though, he was misquoted.
