Time critic blames FOX News for Olbermann’s whacky behavior

Hat tip to Rich Noyes at Newsbusters, who writes:

In an article posted Friday on Time.com, the magazine’s critic James Poniewozik suggests the Fox News Channel, which he sees as tilted to the right, is also responsible for the multi-minute rants that MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann has lately been emitting. Time also dismisses the idea that the rest of the mainstream media (presumably including itself) is tilted to the left, with Poniewozik parenthetically noting that “the MSM really slant toward the institutional, establishmentarian center, which is a bias as dangerous as any other.”

James Poniewozik, the Time critic, writes this about FOX News:

Even with its ratings down, Fox remains the network against which competitors define themselves. And not just news competitors. After Bill Clinton got off an on-camera harangue against Fox News Sunday anchor Chris Wallace, for an aggressive line of questioning about his administration’s anti-terror efforts, the New York Times reported that prominent Democrats, from Howard Dean to Paul Begala, had begun an open campaign of attacking Fox as a covert Republican shill….

So is Fox a covert Republican shill? Shill, yes, sometimes. Its opinion shows blatantly tilt right. The news plays straighter, though as I write I’m looking at a Fox News chyron that reads, “If Rumsfeld left amid criticism, would America be at risk?” Covert, not so much. The network famously calls itself “fair and balanced,” but “fair and balancing” would be a better description: Roger Ailes repeatedly describes his news network as a counterweight, on the right, to the rest of the news media. His argument that nearly every other mainstream media outlet slants left is self-serving and mostly wrong. (The MSM really slant toward the institutional, establishmentarian center, which is a bias as dangerous as any other.) But while “fair and balanced” may be propaganda, it doesn’t seem to be fooling anyone. Conservatives see Fox as a comfortable haven for their worldview; their opponents pretty much agree. The balance here is that Fox winks just as broadly to both sides.

It’s quite obvious to tell Poniewozik is a liberal. No, not because he writes for Time magazine or the fact that he won’t admit that the MSM has liberal bias. It’s because he has to blame others for the behavior of Krazy Keith.

I expect to see more about this from Olbermann Watch.

These lunatics really have a thing about Fox.

Pitiful losers.

JammieWearingFool on October 6, 2006 at 6:23 PM

Why can’t they be intellectually honest enough to say that Olbertwerp’s rants come fromthe fact that he is getting closer every day to that great white “hug-me” jacket and padded room?
Just asking.

Blame outrageous on someone else. What ever Fox is doing to make these idiots act out, I say keep up the good work Fox.

Wade on October 6, 2006 at 6:29 PM

What leftist don’t realize or are too deranged to care is that when they attack Fox News like this, they’re also attacking the judgment of Fox News’ viewers (and there are a lot of them — because of a more entertaining and informative product with a wider variety of views presented). Subconsciously, viewers just dig in their heels when they hear this presented so offensively.

Anyone who has ever attended sales training 101 knows this.

Customer comes into your car dealership driving a Chevy. You’re selling Chrysler. You don’t say, “What a piece of crap car you’re driving sir, let me save you from it.”

Customer will walk out in a huff.

And salesperson will go, “Hey, look at ‘em go. Just another mooch.”

A better approach would be to say, “Hey, you must have driven that car very carefully to have kept it in such good condition.”

Now the customer is your friend. So you can introduce your strong points.

Whatever they happen to be, CBS, Time and your ilk.

Off topic Ian, but your video about Foley doesn’t seem to be accepting comments. Is this deliberate?

By definition, Liberalism HAS to have a victim. Therefore, Olby is a victim of Fox News. It fits the template.

The MSM doesn’t consider itself with a left bias; they think they are center and reasonable and everyone else is biased to the right.

After Bill Clinton got off an on-camera harangue against Fox News Sunday anchor Chris Wallace, for an aggressive line of questioning about his administration’s anti-terror efforts

Wallace asked him one question that was very reasonable, but the Times reporter describes it as a “harangue” and an “aggressive line of questioning.” Just exactly who has the bias??

Christoph:

The same approach applies to the Democrats who say, ‘the voters who elected President Bush are ill-informed, Bible-thumping morons. However, come vote for us in our party.’ And the Dems wonder why they have trouble getting thier message to stick with voters.

From Peggy Noonan

One can’t exaggerate how large Fox looms in the liberal imagination. They see it as huge and mighty and credit it with almost mythical powers. It is a propaganda channel whose mission it is to destroy the Democratic Party. That’s part of why Clintons’ performance had such salience. Finally he was standing up to an evil empire.

It is odd that they are so spooked. In October America is set to become a nation of 300 million. What a big country. Fox News’s average evening prime-time viewership is less than two million. Its average daytime is less than a million. And if my mail is an indication, they’re already Republicans. Fox’s power is that it is an alternative to the mainstream media. It did not take its shape by deeply inhaling liberalism and slowly breathing it out.

On my own little blog, I have issued a challenge to the left. We all know the media is biased, but they feel Bush gets a pass, or so they claim.

To settle the issue I have challenged any liberal to supply pro-Bush articles from the mainstream media since he first took office in 2000.

Media Bias – A Challenge to The Left

I am patiently waiting to see if any post anything. Only one day so far, but no takers as of yet.

The FOX made me do it.

That’s about the most stupided things….

Kini on October 6, 2006 at 8:45 PM

Well, in all fairness, Fox didn’t help its cause by twice labeling Foley as a Democrat. That’s the sort of thing that people are going to point to as hard evidence that Fox is not only biased but is trying to illegally influence the elections.

Personally I don’t watch TV news as it’s all sensationalistic garbage IMO.

Benaiah on October 7, 2006 at 12:39 AM

If it’s not Fox’s fault, then it must be Bush’s fault.

doingwhatican on October 7, 2006 at 8:51 AM

Oh, this is precious…timeless maybe. An insanely crazed lib needs another person to blame his faults ( they do admit he has enourmous faults in saying this) and tirades on a cable television station. The monologue-ists have really outdone themselves this time.

personally, the cooking channel made me do it.

the MSM really slant toward the institutional, establishmentarian center, which is a bias as dangerous as any other.

Everyone wets themselves over “the center” as though that were the right place to be. When did the indecisive, fickle, “latest trend” center become a good choice?

As far as MSM thinking FOX is extreme right… When you’re at the extreme left, even center-left is on the right to you.

Liberals/Dems like to blame other people huh? Take a glance at the Foley threads if you’re interested in the blame phenomenon.

I don’t know what *crickets* means……sorry.

honora on October 7, 2006 at 1:48 PM

I’m sure… somehow…

Bush and Cheney.. no wait, Carl Rove… no wait… Scooter Libby, maybe…

..orchestrated this whole Fox News conspiracy against Obermmann.

It must be true. Olbermann couldn’t possibly be held accoutable for his actions now, could he?

Lawrence on October 7, 2006 at 3:03 PM

It is true Liberals/progressives like to blame other people.

And to try and mitigate it by pointing to some Foley thread in no way invalidates the previous assertion.(not sure what you are referring to as most conservatives I have seen squarely blame Foley, and have no problem with his resignation)(liberals attacking Hastert on the other hand are just their normal smear and muck tactics)

Based on your reasoning when I decide to jump off the proverbial bridge, I will be sure to keep you enlightend so you may lead the way.
