Musharref has always maintained that this is just what Mahmood said Armitage told him. Mahmood was fired from running the ISI two weeks later and has disappeared to join the jihadis after Mushie decided not to defy America’s hand of friendship. Mushie hasn’t been real helpful, but Pakistan is a really complicated problem in the same way Iran is a complicated problem.
