French cops say Muslim housing projects are waging “civil war” against them

This is old news to regulars of the righty blogosphere, of course. Dalrymple writes about this all the time, including this piece last year after the riots and his seminal treatment of the subject in City Journal back in 2002.

Even the Guardian’s been on this for awhile. Do you know what the word “tournante” means? If not, it’s high time you learned.

Anyway. The latest report quotes one police trade union spokesman as calling it … an intifada.

Police representatives told the newspaper Le Figaro that the “taboo” of attacking officers on patrol has been broken.

Instead, officers – especially those patrolling in pairs or small groups – faced attacks as soon as they tried to arrest locals…

He said yesterday: “We are in a state of civil war, orchestrated by radical Islamists. This is not a question of urban violence any more, it is an intifada, with stones and Molotov cocktails. You no longer see two or three youths confronting police, you see whole tower blocks emptying into the streets to set their ‘comrades’ free when they are arrested.”

I.e., they’re turning into no-go zones, a little slice of Dar al-Islam in the heart of postmodern France. The question is, how much of their behavior is informed by religion versus the usual pathologies that come with poverty and cultural alienation? Steyn writes at some length about that in his new book and concedes there might not be much jihad to the jihad — yet. But as France becomes more and more Muslim, the emerging majority will need some sort of political identity with which to organize itself. “Frenchness” doesn’t seem to have taken hold. What’s left?
