New UN Secretary-General chosen, sort of

Ban Ki-Moon of South Korea. The Security Council’s signed off on him; all that’s left is for the General Assembly to kiss the bride. The formal SC vote is next Monday. Not sure about the GA.
Hard to say how having Ban in charge will affect the UN’s wrangling with Kim Jong-Il. I’d like to think it’ll help: rationally, having a fellow Korean to deal with should make Kim more open to negotiation.
But rational’s got nothing to do with it, does it?
Here’s audio, video, and transcript of a speech Ban gave to the Council on Foreign Relations earlier this year. He’s a reformer, which sounds good until you think of it Mark Steyn’s way. Would you rather have a “corrupt dysfunctional sclerotic anti-American club” obstructing you, or a “lean mean effectively functioning anti-American club”?

I guess Cigarman is out of the running. I’ll settle for that.

If I had my druthers, we’d let the UN move to Europe and let them hate us from a distance. But since my wishes don’t come true, I would say it is better to have the devil we know in there. It could be worse. They could have nominated Huge Ego Chavez.

At least we won’t have to listen to Kofi Annan speak after Dec. 2006 – my ears hurt every time, ooouuuuch!

Retire the UN. Period!
It’s just a litter of piglets all fighting over the same hind tit.
The UN is a disaster, always has been and always will be.
A true waste of time, money and lives.
Want proof? List the successes versus the failures.
The longer list makes the decision.
Scatter the piglets to the winds…adios.

We could’ve done a lot worse. (I’m assuming he’s not a muslim.) Maybe he’ll move the HQ to Seoul after we kick them out of NY. Looking at a few thousand missiles in their backyard might inspire them to do something about Kim Jung Sick.

Hard to say if this is better than BJ Clinton logistically, but I’d much rather hear a South Korean talk crap about the US in a big, ceremonious venue like the UN than one of our former presidents. I’d go INSANE.

The irony of the picture is that the muppets would be better stewards of the UN.
Sadly.

He’s not a Muslim. That’s all I need to know to consider him an improvement.

Right. The UN delenda est. The occasion we should have taken was the exposure of the use of the Oil for Food program by Iraq to buy influence and subvert the foreign policy of liberal democracies. With proper rhetorical buildup, Bush could have ransacked the UN and bulldozed it.
