In Le Figaro dated back to Friday, the director of the publication and the director of the the newspaper compilation react to the placement under police protection of a threatened philosopher of death for have written an article very critical of Islam.

SINCE about ten days, a philosophy professor is threatened with death for having written in Le Figaro a comment very critical on Islam. He had to interrupt his courses, leave his residence and to place itself under the protection of the police.

Le Figaro is a newspaper open to various opinions. Everyday, we welcome in our columns contradictory standpointscan allow for them to analyze in depth the current event. Now, to understand our World, have an opinion, it is necessary also to know,to look at those that live otherwise and listen to those that think differently, debate, controversies.

Well heard, we have a strong editorial line and we do not divide all these ideas or the manner of which they express themselves sometimes. But we consider that, beyond information, the role of a newspaper is to furnish to its readers all this that can allow them to analyze in depth the current event.

Now, to understand our world, to have an opinion, it is necessary also to know, to look at those that live otherwise and listen those that think differently.

We condemn therefore with all firmness the serious affect of the liberty to think and freedom of expression that this matter provoked.

Death Threats in Brussels, France

Yesterday the Belgian authorities decided to provide police protection for people working in the Brussels prisons of Vorst and Sint-Gillis. The decision was taken after two jailers, on their way to work, were attacked on a Brussels tram. Immigrant youths called them “assassins” and threatened them with knives. All the prison employees are now escorted by the police on their way to the car park or to the nearby train station.

Meanwhile in France, a philosophy teacher is under police protection after receiving death threats over an op-ed article [French text here] which he wrote in a national newspaper.
