First things first …The U.S. government didn’t repeal the Fugitive Slave Act until 1864 …three years after the Civil War began. So can we all just please dispense with the divisionist tactics? Northern citizens weren’t exactly embracing runaway slaves with open arms …quite the contrary. Northerner’s reaped the benefits of slavery while pretending to abhor it. Today, we refer to them as Liberal Democrats. The Southern “cause” was indeed inherently immoral but Northern interests weren’t exactly insistent on abolishing slavery …at least not at the onset of the war. In the beginning, secession was the going concern.

Now …on to the flag itself.

Should the Confederate Battle Flag …a flag under which Americans (right or wrong) marched and fought, be flown above government buildings?

Absolutely no.

Should a private citizen be allowed to fly or display the Confederate Battle Flag without immediately being branded a racist?

Absolutely yes.

Americans also marched, fought and held watch under the Stars and Stripes during Wounded Knee, Trail of Tears and the internment of Japanese Americans — why aren’t people equally “bothered” by that?

So should we just cave-in to political correctness and begin censoring out the more unpleasant remnants of our nation’s history? I mean, if it was good enough for Stalin…

And how anyone can compare the Battle Flag to the Mexican or Israeli flag is beyond me. The difference here is in the word American …for good or bad.

The Confederate Battle Flag is an American Civil War artifact …nothing more …nothing less. People have been projecting their own definitions upon it for decades. I despise the way in which it’s been politicized to near extinction. It’s gotten so bad that Civil War museums have actually been asked to “tone down” depictions of the Southern cause in their displays. Again, political correctness at work.

Personally, I think folks who display the Battle Flag are no different than those who display other historical relics. To each his/her own – who are we to judge?

And last time I checked, there wasn’t anything in the Bill of Rights about the right of the people not to be offended by a piece of cloth …or anything else for that matter.

As for the Israeli flag, please tell me you’re kidding AP (or KP if you’re repeating an example of hers). The Israeli flags aren’t brought out to protest massing law breaking by tens of millions of illegals demanding undeserved rights and claiming ownership of American land in the name of Mexico. Need I go on about how the Mexican flag is used?

The Israeli flag was used to counter-protest terror/Hezbo supporters protesting, and to show solidarity with Israel and let them know that there are people who support their existence. I would also say that the Denmark flag was flown for some of the same reasons.

But like others here I have to ask – what other flags? Who’s flying other flags and in what context? After someone’s favorite team one a World Cup soccer game? Or those tiny bumper stickers of the flags of european countries, usually representing the car owner’s heritage?

Back to the drawing board KP, I thought you were smarter than this. You’ve just presented strawmen and shown a lack of critical thinking, specifically the ability to see the different contexts of the Mex flag and the Israeli flag usages.
