Nancy Pelosi, theocrat?

posted at 1:27 pm on September 28, 2006 by Bryan

What will Andrew Sullivan do now? The Democrat leader in the House is quoting the Bible to set national policy. The context is the debate on how to treat captured terrorists–do we aggressively interrogate them or not? Pelosi is in the “not” crowd, and the Bible is her guide:

“This is a time when the Golden Rule really should be in affect. Do not do unto others, what you would not have them do unto your troops, your CIA agents, your people in the field.

Well, Pelosi is actually misquoting the Bible, but nevertheless doesn’t this make her a “Christianist?” Or at least a “theocrat?” Never mind that we already know what terrorists will do to anyone–troops, reporters, contractors, aid workers–they capture. We don’t have to base the debate on conjecture. We have actual facts: al Qaeda has not signed and does not abide by Geneva. They behead people, after torturing them. I guess the Pelosi Democrats are in this debate, as in most, allergic to facts. Anyway.

Typical of Democrats, up is down and down is up from reality. The actual Golden Rule says “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” It’s a positive attitude and action, not a negative one. The distinction isn’t huge, I’ll grant, but revealing. Democrats will try to set policy based on whatever suits them at the moment, spending one day quoting a text they’re likely to spend the other 364 of any given year denouncing, and they’ll twist whatever weapon they find handy to achieve their ends.

Nice catch.

The Left is trying to reach out to evangelicals and still keep their Sullivanesque/PFAW base happy, and that’s proving to be a stretch.

see-dubya on September 28, 2006 at 1:30 PM

and remember she’s third in line to become President if the democrats win November & in 08.

Starblazer on September 28, 2006 at 1:32 PM

Boy the Dems are still feeling the sting from Ann’s book “Godless”. I think it is time for “Treason” to make a comeback.
Q: Since I don’t attend a predominately black Baptist church how can I meet any of the Democratic candidates?

LakeRuins on September 28, 2006 at 1:35 PM

Yay! Something I can agree upon

Typical of Democrats, up is down and down is up from reality.

Democrats are more than eager to twist words and opinion to suit their needs.

GregH on September 28, 2006 at 1:37 PM

LOL:

“Do not do unto others, what you would not have them do unto you….”

Umm … OK, Nan, I’ll try not to just as soon as I unravel that sentence structure.

Blacksheep on September 28, 2006 at 1:37 PM

Well they have to have think tanks to work on “reaching out to the religious”.

Catie96706 on September 28, 2006 at 1:38 PM

Allah, the positive distinction is actually quite telling. Every “religion” has that same sort of rule. The Bible is only one that puts it in the positive sense.

Which is exactly how Bush answered when asked if he thought other nations would use it as fodder to interpret GC in their own way; he plainly said he hoped they would interpret it the exact same way we do.

sorry, Bryan…

What is her stance on the separation of mosque and state?

JammieWearingFool on September 28, 2006 at 1:43 PM

This has always puzzled me about the liberals/democrats. How can they holler “seperation of church and state”, but practically fawn at the thought of islamic theocracies? *shrug*

Pelosi’s Second Commandment:

Don’t love your neighbor as you wouldn’t love yourself.

Valiant on September 28, 2006 at 2:21 PM

An observation, any real Evangelical will spot the ridiculousness Pelosi’s statement immediately. The foundational idea of the Golden Rule is that it is an animating trait of individual believers. It is not meant, nor was it, nor can it be stretched to mean that nations are meant to behave that way. Sure it’s a nice policy, but Jesus was talking about how Christians should demonstrate the proof of their salvation. Last time I checked, nation’s don’t have souls. Maybe Pelosi does want us to be a Christian Nation, but I highly doubt it.

As I remember it, I believe she’s quoting Confucius. It seems appropriate, no? As she is definitely ‘confused’.

BNCurtis on September 28, 2006 at 2:51 PM

Found an interesting article about the Confucius quote at http://www.escmedia.org/wires/confucius.html how the negative statement basically teaches to “leave other folks alone” while when positively stated encourages one to get involved.

Nanci Pelosi is whatever the latest moment demands her to be. A true nuance who can stare at you courageously!

Entelechy on September 28, 2006 at 2:59 PM

Rosie was right, those radical Christians are takin’ over!

speed647 on September 28, 2006 at 3:24 PM

As is typical, Nancy cherry picks her quote. The entire episode is from Matthew 22:34-40. The religous leaders are testing Jesus and asking him what is the greatest commandment. He replies:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.>

Just to get more nuanced, the golden rule citation is Jesus quoting from Leviticus 19:18. You know Leviticus, that book in the Bible that has all those homophobic and hateful procriptions. And Nancy Pelosi is quoting Leviticus???? Oh she will lose her lib credentials for sure now.

Mallard T. Drake on September 28, 2006 at 4:21 PM

She must have been quoting from the Revised Stupid Version….

ScottG on September 28, 2006 at 6:34 PM

Where is the “we aren’t a Christian nation!” left? Where is the ACLU you scream “separation of church and state!” Oh right….

Well said Entelechy. How’s things up North by the way? It’s hot and muggy down here… *whew*

WHOAH! I don’t know what happened to that Nancy “Betty Botox” Pelosi link… ?

SilverStar830 on September 28, 2006 at 8:08 PM

Have we all noticed that the Democrats cannot quote the bible to save their soul? If they’re trying to reach out to Evangelicals they should at least know how to make a good quote.

Satan can’t quote scripture correctly either Mojave. Remember when he tempted Jesus in the wilderness? Well, after the bread he says.
Matt 4
5. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

6. And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

This was actually a quote from Psalm 91, notice how the devil “mis-quoted” the scripture, being the father of lies. Here’s the real psalm.

11. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, TO KEEP THEE IN ALL THY WAYS.
12.They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Notice how he neglected the line “TO KEEP THEE IN ALL THY WAYS”! this of course would have given the weakened Christ, strength, and therefore was not quoted. Obviously if you were going to be “Kept in all your ways”, you wouldn’t have anything to worry about!

Well, those that live their lives in thrall to Satan, advocating evil policies like partial birth abortion, gay marriage, etc, are unable to quote the truth as well.

SilverStar830, thanks for the link. You’re completely in sync with my thought :)

I’m probably very close from you – just about 30 miles North of downtown SD. Best regards,
