Video: Karzai responds to reporter’s question about terrorism; Update: Reporter was left-wing shill Jennifer Loven

We’ve gotten four or five requests for this since it aired this morning. It’s not so much what he says as how he says it: the long pauses, the look of utter incredulity that an educated person — from New York City, no less — might not still appreciate the stakes five years later.
You’ll find the clip at the end of this sequence, which also features Bush’s angry comments about the NIE leak. Rarely has he been so blunt in his criticism of the press.
Update: Poland’s speeding up its deployment to Afghanistan to help NATO crush the Taliban.
Update: A new CNN poll says support for the war in Afghanistan has dropped to 50% but I can’t find an article about it on the main site or a breakdown by party. It must be Republicans who are bailing out given the left’s incessant shrieking about how we’ve “forgotten” Afghanistan, that’s where the “real” battle is, etc. Can anyone find this poll online?
Update: WaPo has a transcript of the press conference.
Update: The White House transcript reveals that the reporter who put the terrorism question to Karzai was the notoriously partisan Jennifer Loven of AP. See
here, here, and here for a taste at LGF. And here’s more at Powerline. In fact, just google her and drink it in.
The irony is, Loven’s question on its own terms wasn’t unfair. But Bush and even Karzai knew what agenda was driving it, and responded accordingly:
Q Thank you, sir. Even after hearing that one of the major conclusions of the National Intelligence Estimate in April was that the Iraq war has fueled terror growth around the world, why have you continued to say that the Iraq war has made this country safer?

Hat’s off to Hamid!
He tells it like it is there, unbound by the politically correct chains that restrain Bush from telling “reporters” what he really thinks.
Very articulate man.
BirdEye on September 26, 2006 at 1:27 PM
When speaking about 9-11 Karzai asks:
Good questions, indeed.
GregH on September 26, 2006 at 1:29 PM
You must have missed the part at the beginning where he thanked Bush profusely for all his help, Greg.
Did you miss that part? Or is there a video glitch?
Allahpundit on September 26, 2006 at 1:32 PM
I am sure that Mr. Karzai is indeed very grateful to Mr. Bush. No objections there.
Still doesn’t take away the fact that those questions seem to remain unanswered.
GregH on September 26, 2006 at 1:38 PM
Well, unlike most of those he was speaking to, Karzai “gets it.”
Chappy on September 26, 2006 at 1:38 PM
Wow… amazing this is NOT all over the MSM… it should be.
Romeo13 on September 26, 2006 at 1:41 PM
A whole bunch of those people and their masters are now dead. That is a good thing.
old_dawg on September 26, 2006 at 1:41 PM
Those questions aren’t really unanswered, are they? Al Qaeda did it. The 19 operatives are all dead. Hundreds or thousands of other AQ operatives are dead in Afghanistan and Iraq or captured. Hundreds or thousands of others are still at large, as is Bin Laden, although he might be dead. If he isn’t, he’s probably either hiding somewhere in Afghanistan or in Waziristan.
Does that help?
Allahpundit on September 26, 2006 at 1:42 PM
What’s the over/under on someone in the MSM “airing” the theory that we threatened to bomb Poland into the “Stone Age” in advance of this deployment?
Kid from Brooklyn on September 26, 2006 at 1:42 PM
It was a rhetorical question, Greg. Osama confessed and bragged about 9-11 a long time ago. We’ve seen tapes of him cavorting with some of the hijackers, etc. Miss the past five years, did ya?
Bryan on September 26, 2006 at 1:42 PM
Too bad the reporter’s question was not in the clip. It must have been incredibly juvenile though. Karzai’s incredulous look says it all. It is like he is explaining to a child that fire is hot and will hurt you if it is played with.
Although the circumstances are regrettable, master stroke by GWB unclassifying the NIE report. Takes all of the momentum from the press and puts into public view the damage those idiots can cause us.
Maybe this time the leaker in the administration will be procuseted and “brought to justice”.
BacaDog on September 26, 2006 at 1:45 PM
So that’s it, huh? All questions answered in a nice neat little package.
“where are they now?” – that’s a rhetorical question??
GregH on September 26, 2006 at 1:45 PM
Yes, GregH, those are good questions. Let’s rule out some of the answers that those in Kos or the DU would have us consider.
Who did that? It wasn’t President Bush, Halliburton, or the CIA. It was a group of Islamofascists.
Where are they? They are located in Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, and other Middle Eastern countries. Disturbingly, some are in mosques in Dearborn and London. It means that we are fighting the war on many fronts and we need to kill these cockroaches whereever we find them.
Just as an aside, the war against Japan did not stop when we killed Yamamoto. Resistance actually increased as we approached V-J Day. The closer we got to Tokyo the tougher the fighting became. The largest battle for American troops in Europe came six months before the close of the war. This is the time to redouble our resolve, not to join hands with the Code Pink surrender faction.

IT’S YOUR JOB TO PROSECUTE THE LEAKERS, MR PRESIDENT.
PROSECUTE THE LEAKERS NOW.

They answered the question you asked.
Now let’s hear the one you didn’t ask. Pull out the ol’ “Osama bin Forgotten” card.

It’s ironic that the extreme left and extreme right are attempting to hail, in thier minds, the marking of the decline of the so called, “American Empire”. The MSM and the left have adopted socialist and communist sensibilities and are them selves helping to eat away at the very thing they decry. The Extreme right calling it the will of God and all decry the comming apocolypse spew nonsense into the media who the Media then quotes as the base of the Right.
The Extreme left decrys the evil of mankind and do anthing to either stop it’s progress, by glorifying mediocricy, declaring more importance to anmimals and earth, and calls for the removal and destruction of greatness. They are assiting the communist agenda at eating away from the inside so no-one notices. The religious right on all sides makes it a statment that man is subserviant to god and must be restrained at all times. Humanity keeps inventing things greater than then selves out of their own self fear and lonlyness as the dominant species on the plant and the only known species currently in the entire universe. We keep inventing invisible friends to talk to. When we should be respecting ourselves for what we are human beings and never apologize for it to anything or anyone. We even invent that there are aliens or visitors that replace to replace god.
Niether the extreme left of the extreme right are willing to take reponsibility for mankind’s own behaviors and choices. The believe in entitlements, inheritence, blood lines, and the orginal sin. They all must sacrifice all self to the greater good of god, the nation, the race, or the tribe.
The only current known counter to this is the principles of free trade, democracy, tied together wit the principles of the responsible individual. Protection of the one from the mod frenzy thievery of the many.

Allahpundit,
He’s either hiding in DC, or France. He will be safer there.
Egfrow on September 26, 2006 at 1:56 PM
Greg, I think the answer you’re looking for can be found here.
I’m pretty sure that Karzai knew what the answer is before he posed the question.
Pablo on September 26, 2006 at 1:57 PM
Clearly, there’s a conspiracy afoot. The answers make too much sense. It must be a trick!
Pablo on September 26, 2006 at 1:59 PM
It won’t be because it doesn’t fit the liberal’s profile that the people in Afghanistan and Iraq don’t really want the US there, and if we left every thing would be rosy. Here is their leader saying thank you and expressing that Americans are making a positive difference in his country. The islamofascists are destroying their culture and they want them defeated. Can’t show that message now can we…
Mallard T. Drake on September 26, 2006 at 2:10 PM
What if Osama was dead? What if we killed him today? What would change?
Did Iraq change overnight when we killed Zarqawi? Did we really expect it to? How about when we captured the 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed?
Terrorism is more like the mythical hydra, and not so much a snake. If you cut off the head, many more will rise to the occasion to take over.
Bin Laden has been marginalized. In many ways he is no longer relavent the way that Zarqawi was relevant (up until his death).
It is better for Osama to be in hiding, than to be dead a martyr. If the non-Muslims had killed him at Tora Bora; how many more recruits would terror have? The best way for Osama to die is by disease, or by the hand of another Muslim.
Terrorism will continue after Osama. Lets not get too focuses on one man when there are many other problems at hand.

“Do you forget people jumping off the 80th floor…?
Apparently, the answer is yes.
brazilnut on September 26, 2006 at 2:17 PM
Judging by all the comments Greg is getting at his website, where he fawns over Olberdunce, Chomsky, and Chavez, it’s no wonder he’s spending so much time polluting the threads here with his idiocy.
JammieWearingFool on September 26, 2006 at 2:21 PM
An enlightened Muslim lecturing the MSM about terrorism… Doesn’t that just put in a nutshell the horrific self-loathing traitorous anti-Americanism of the MSM?
One of the gravest mistakes the Bush administration is making is the (so far) refusal to prosecute the clearly criminal acts of leaking and/or publishing national security secrets. It is hard to find any excuse for this laxness, and the precedent will cost the nation very, very dearly down the road.
Halley on September 26, 2006 at 2:22 PM
BTW, AP, thanks for posting this. I caught it from Rush earlier, and what also most impressed me was his deliberate tone.
Speaking slowly for the idiots who refuse to listen.

According to PollingReport.com, they polled 1,009 adults nationwide over this past weekend.
No party splits, but as you know, surveying “adults” (as opposed to registered or likely voters) over the course of a weekend is a proven recipe for generating a result intended to shaft the GOP.

Hammering on the same questions years after the real answers have been obtained isn’t enlightened or any sign of healthy inquisitiveness. It’s a sign either of denial, stupidity or dishonesty. Which describes you, GregH?
Bryan on September 26, 2006 at 2:30 PM
Bryan,
You hit it on the head a stupid dishonest person in denial?
What? No?
I find it an interesting barometer that GregH rails at the most powerfully damning exhibitions against all he stands for.
Do we know if GregH is a man or a woman using a male screen name or even if he is Olberman in disguise?

YAAAAAA-HOOOOOOOOOOO! FOR KARZAI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had just gotten out of a physical therapy session, in my car, turned Rush on IN TIME to hear him slap the ever loving crap out of the b*****hs head and the whole friggen room. ESPECIALLY when he referenced the people jumping out of the 80th and 70th floors of the building, something that stills in my minds eye every day.
And then to remind them of how these terroists bastards have been attacking us long before 9-11. Damn. I would have been there. Didn’t you hear the crickets?
AND LIKE MOST OF YOU, I want to see this administration go for the balls on these damn demo-beauro-crat/leaking/ putting my country at risk pricks.
auspatriotman on September 26, 2006 at 2:43 PM
The reporter who received a history lesson from Bush and Karzai is AP’s Jennifer Loven, widely suspected of being a DNC hitgrrrl.
Powerline has her dossier.
ganeshpuri89 on September 26, 2006 at 3:08 PM
JammieWearingFool,
I like having Greg around, as long as he doesn’t go medieval on everyone. It keeps the place from being an echo chamber.
Egfrow,
When you write,” The Extreme right calling it the will of God and all decry the coming apocalypse”, aren’t you forgetting that many Democrats are also very religious? I mean it is like you are saying all of the very religious types are on the right.
I can assure you that down here in Houston there are many ultra religious left wing types. Have you ever been to a black church? Do you think they don’t believe in God’s will or the apocalypse?

Way to go Karzai ! how do ya say it anymore plain and simple than that?
Hey media dumbass: Terrorists wanna kill YOU! They wanna kill ME, they wanna kill your KIDS, your PARENTS, your boyfriend, etc etc. How do YOU think we should deal with it, Einstein?
Tony737 on September 26, 2006 at 3:34 PM
Jennifer Loven? It figures.
JammieWearingFool on September 26, 2006 at 3:39 PM
I would like to see a broadcast on FOX of a roundtable discussion on terrorism with Bush, Blair, Howard and Karzai. Throw in Rudi Guliani as moderator and let it fly. THEN we might see some of these fools think again about things.
When Karzai spoke of the woman soldier he met at Walter Reed and then talked about how meaningful it was when America sends her WOMEN..her MOTHERS. Well..that got me.
No, and I never ever ever ever will.

GregH, even readers of the NY Times aren’t as ill informed as are you, so I’ll again suggest that you subscribe to a news paper. ANY News Paper.
Has the MSM always asked such stupid questions? It seems to me that they are losing their minds as of late.

You know, I’ve alwas sort of liked Karzai, I think ever since the MSM called him a puppet of the Bush administration.
It says a lot about the MSM when the head of state of another country chastises a reporter for criticizing our president. And in Person, no less.
As a side note, I think the Pres communicates far better ‘off-the-cuff’ than he does in prepared statements.

Karzai is a smart, brave and I believe honest man. It was nice to see how appreciative he really is for all that the US has done for his country. As for these leakers-they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I am at a loss as to why these people continue to not be prosecuted unless they have and that hasn’t been leaked. I am seriously concerned about these people who continue to leak. They should be in jail.
I also like the President off the cuff as he does seem more comfortable. Wish he’d do that more often.

The sound of silence.
Karzai always speaks with class, courage and intelligence.
In an early press conference about the new government Karzai would lead, a bitter young man asked if the new government would still cut the hands off of thieves. Karzai paused and said (paraphrased) in a perfect world with economic justice there is no need to steal so that would be one case, but our world is imperfect without economic justice so the punishment would have to take that into account.
It blew me away. He handled the toughest question with ease.
In this press conference, there was no contest. Karzai fights the Taliban. The press conference twits are midgets

whtabtbill on September 26, 2006 at 10:09 PM
Oh, thank whatever God anybody anybody wants to worship too! I haven’t been “killed” by AP! Notwithstanding my angry F-U promising to NOT post here again!
Maybe it HASN’T been some weirdo “vast right-wing conspiracy” that alerted Karzai that AMERICAN “non-combatant” CIVLIANS (maybe it was the videos?) leapt to their deaths to escape their deaths by a kerosine-soaked (a.k.a., “jet fuel”) kamikaze-caused deaths (hello, STUPID LEFTIES, read heavily-laden taken-off aircraft from Boston and Washington, D.C., and such aircraft being “jet-fueled”): I cannot ignore your stupidity in understanding certain physical dynamics involving such alternatives – the people in the towers choosing to leap to their deaths, as opposed to being consumed by fire (although I would happily be prepared to subject you “liberal” people to be subject to such “realities,” so long as “normal” people were not affected by your idiotic politics).
GOD grant us this wish.
Let only uber-Liberals be subject to Islamo-facist death-cult assaults. Let the idiots that wish to surrender to Islamo-facists die in the streets of America while being slaughtered by their “benevolent” benefactors while they convert to Islam or become willing Dhimmis.
Oh, and by the way, although I know empircally that female births slightly outnumber male births (but not 74-to-1), where are the “74″ (or whatever) number of virgin female births going to come from? The disparging ratio of female-to-male births will NEVER account for this ratio. Did the Islamo-facist pedophile prophet fail to explain this? Is this simply more strange Islamist crap? That, added-to the fact that under your beliefs that the so-called “virgins” supposedly magically revert to being virgins AFTER an Islamist has had SEX with her, has never been adequately explained. Unlike so many, I suspect, Islamo-facists, I have actually had sex with a woman who has delivered (more than one) a child (I know the difference in “feel,” as sex goes, to be rather crude). If I converted to Islam, does this mean that I might end up with screwing some bimbo who has magically-reverted to being a “virgin” far too many over some many-thousands of years ago? (Sorry for asking, but I come from a rationale culture. It sort of matters to me whether I’m screwing some ancient hag who manages magically to keep “tight.” Personally, I would prefer fresh young bimbos ((although NOT 9 year-olds, I’m not Mohammed, I prefer 18 year-olds and up)) – sort of like Bill Clinton, although I have no preference for porkers.)
Sorry, AP, if I have offended your religion-of-peace. These are merely my thoughts.
