Falwell: Hillary more feared than Satan

WASHINGTON — If Hillary Rodham Clinton is the Democrats’ presidential nominee in 2008, it will motivate conservative evangelical Christians to oppose her more than if the devil himself were running, the Rev. Jerry Falwell has told pastors at a “values” conference.
“I certainly hope that Hillary is the candidate,” Falwell, a leading conservative evangelist, said, according to a tape recording of the Friday prayer breakfast attended by several hundred pastors and religious activists.
The recording, first reported in Sunday’s Los Angeles Times, was confirmed by someone who attended the conference, but not the breakfast, and has heard the tape.
“I hope she’s the candidate, because nothing will energize my (constituency) like Hillary Clinton,” Falwell said. “If Lucifer ran, he wouldn’t.”
Who would motivate you more to vote: Satan or Hilllary?

While I kind of agree with his sentiments about hillary, this sort of over-the-top statements from Falwell (and a few other of his ilk) are the reason that Rosie O’D can get applause rather than boos for saying that Christians are a greater danger than muslim terrorists.
Ann Coulter can get away with that kind of hyperbole because she has the intellect and style to sorta back it up. On Falwell, it just sounds like ignorance and mean-spiritdness.

Either… they’re one in the same as far as I’m concerned.
Jihad John seems to think she’s just dandy.
Remember that quote. If he decides to run, all the opposition has to do is say “neener neener”, and he’ll take his ball and go home. What a waste of space he has turned into. I wouldn’t trust him with my country any further than I could piss into a hurricane. Please pardon my crassness.
If he does run, it will be strictly to ensure he disrupts valid Republican candidate’s efforts.

One more thing. In Falwell’s defense, he admitted saying it and further states it was “tongue in cheek“. Also, consider the source and the atmosphere he was in at the time. He was addressing a summit for religious conservatives. It’s natural that he’d make a joke in that vein I suppose. He’s neither the President of a country addressing world leaders, nor is he an elected official. It’s still none too bright, but he’s said a lot worse.

There is a difference? [/sarc]
I get motivated to vote in Presidential races by a positive message concerning the future of America.

Yeah… at least the Devil is competant!

Who says she isn’t the devil…….?

I always imagined Satan would be a political moderate; that’s just the way he operates.
I hate moderates.
I don’t know if I’m the only one to notice this, but Falwell might be more of a partisan than he is a preacher.

SilverStar830 –
From the McCain quote:
Not that I’m sold on McCain, but I’m reading between the lines here, and I read that as a pretty damning rebuke of Hillary.

Hey, at least Satan is honest about where he stands.

Oh, my mistake. I thought that we had a freedom of speech and that private citizens didn’t have to apologize for things they say in public. Apparently only LIBERAL private citizens are afforded this right.
As for Hillary v Lucifer, I don’t think that this is a choice. It’s actually Hillary & Lucifer…if you consider, as I do, Bill to be the equivalent of the big red guy (as depicted in all the cartoons!)

Falwell was clearly chuckling while making the statement and the entire audience was laughing when it was made. The thin skin is rampant in the democrat party. They aparently have no sense of humor.
roninacreage on September 25, 2006 at 9:02 AM
Eh, Falwell was kidding. The “Rev” Barry Lynn, who like the “Rev” Jesse Jackson doesn’t actually lead a church and is out slamming Falwell’s devilry, has no sense of humor.

Before we start making hasty decisions here…where does the devil stand on private property rights and taxation? Because the Great Satan has made it clear that she wants to “take away” some things from us, in the interest of the “common good”.

Didnt the “Rev” Barry Lynn work for the ACLU? He does NOT have a church or a church following, just an ACLU moonbatjob.

As a Baptist (Missionary Baptist, just to be clear about it) myself, I have one comment for Falwell.
“Shut Up and go spread the Gospel.”
As much as I may agree with his take on Hillary, I don’t think it’s particularly beneficial to have active Ministers involved in politics. I don’t approve of it from the Imams, I don’t approve of it from The Reverend Jesse Jackson, and I don’t approve of it from Jerry Falwell, either.
jefferson101 on September 25, 2006 at 11:18 AM
Actually the devil is quite dishonest about where he stands. He is the “father of lies,” and that’s one of the things that makes him devilish.
Falwell’s joke–and that’s what it was–could also be a tongue-in-cheek way of acknowledging that many modern Christians no longer really believe in their heart of hearts that evil is real, so Hillary would be scarier than a red guy with a pitchfork who’s just a myth. The late great Christian singer Keith Green had a song about that–”Nobody Believes In Me Anymore.” CS Lewis’ classic The Screwtape Letters also talks about how easy it is for evil to work when no one believes that it’s real.
I doubt Falwell was relying on all that to make a political one-liner, but he may have been and he would have been on firm ground if he was.
Bryan on September 25, 2006 at 11:55 AM
Hillary. Satan wouldn’t win the dem primary. He’s too conservative, and the Christian conservatives wouldn’t let him win the republican primary either, so it’s kinda pointless.

I’m confused – I thought the devil was already in the oval office? At least that’s what we were told last week.
Rick on September 25, 2006 at 12:43 PM
Jerry Falwell calling someone, or equating someone with Lucifer. And people call these RW extremists nuts.

Satan is a conservative concept. Hence, I can believe that conservatives would accept Satan as a political candidate before Ms. Clinton. However, perhaps Satan would provide each jihadi 72 virgins who look like her.

Jerry, what are you talkin’ about? Hillary *IS* satan!
Tony737 on September 25, 2006 at 6:35 PM
Allah, I’ve got to say, you do choose great visuals. In this shot Hillary appears to have just leapt out of MacBeth.
Dr. Charles G. Waugh on September 26, 2006 at 12:06 AM
????? Satan is a conservative concept????? Meaning Satan is good by association????
Hence, I am confused.
honora on September 26, 2006 at 2:57 PM
Aren’t they one and the same?
Tim Burton on September 28, 2006 at 2:39 PM
No, Conservatives believe that Satan exists, because Evil exists (plus most are Judeo-Christians). The Left does not believe in Evil, just in less than Right. They believe all of mankind is good, if just lifted from proverty.
The Right believes that man is Evil and proverty has nothing to do with it.
