Democrats accuse Steele of ‘political identity theft’

More SDS (Steele Derangement Syndrome):

No, Maryland voters, the printer did not make an error. Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele’s new campaign signs seem to identify him as a Democrat.

A “Steele Democrat,” they read.

The bright blue placards and bumper stickers made their debut yesterday in Baltimore during an event announcing a new coalition of Democrats supporting the lieutenant governor’s U.S. Senate bid. Steele, of course, is the Republican nominee for Senate and a former chairman of the state Republican Party.

The group and accompanying signs appear to be the latest Steele effort to distance himself from an unpopular White House and a Republican Party struggling to maintain its hold on Congress. The state Democratic Party chairman immediately accused him of “identity theft.”

Two things here: (1) Maryland Governor Bob Ehrlich has bumper stickers that read “Another Democrat for Ehrlich”, a slogan he has used since his 2002 bid. This by any means is not something new nor is it something you use to distance yourself from the President or your political party. (2) Democrats are accusing Steele of identity theft, now that is funny. Have Maryland Dems forgot, conveniently, what Senator Chuck Schumer’s thugs did to Steele and his wife? A DCCC employee illegally obtained the Steeles’ credit report in an obvious attempt to use it against him in this year’s election.

Of course, the Baltimore Sun article did not note any of this.

WOW! Democrat desperation is diiiiirrrrrrtttty!

Pulling his credit report?? They just can’t handle the idea of a smart, black, Republican winning the Senate.

It’s great that some Dems won’t follow their party off the far-left edge of politics like lemmings. “Steele Democrat”-sort of an oxymoron, but I’ll take it!

Wonderful bumpersticker! The long version would go something like this:
“I was a loyal Democrat before 1)President Clinton disgraced the office, 2)9/11 demonstrated the need for stronger national defense, 3)the Democrats in Congress decided to make a political issue out of the War on Terror, 4)President Bush decided to reform education so minority students could be admitted to college on the basis on test scores instead of affirmative action, and 5)the positive results of the Bush economic policy made it possible for my family to enjoy real gains. Oh, and by the way, Powell, Rice, and Steele are better role models than Maxine Waters, Cynthia McKiney, and Jesse Jackson. So I’ll be voting for Republican candidates until the Democrats regain their sanity.”

Reagan Democrats, anyone?

Ronald Walters, a professor in government and politics at the University of Maryland, College Park, said Steele’s new signs are an attempt to avoid a discussion of the issues.

WTF?

Is he hiding behind them when you ask him a question? This is a professor???

I know, I know…

So, in the twisted mind of Baltimore Sun writer Jennifer Skalka what exactly does the term “Reagan Democrat” signify?

“Michael Steele is trying to hide the fact that his campaign is funded and directed by George Bush and the Republican party,” Singer said in an e-mail statement.

Oh, no Bubbie. He’s crossing the aisle to kick your ass and take your votes away, back over to the other side of the aisle. I’m pretty sure that every Marylander who hasn’t been in a coma for 5 years and isn’t dumb as dirt knows Steele is a Republican.

But why did he have to go and be a black Republican and ruin your day? And why did you have to go and nominate the white guy to run against him? It almost looks like race baiting isn’t going to be an option this time around.

That article needs an editor to go find the missing sentence or two preceeding this:

A spokeswoman for Kweisi Mfume said that he did not know about his son’s plans to support Mr. Steele, who is the first black elected to statewide office in Maryland.

…but if you’re Kweisi Mfume, that’s gotta hurt.

Why all this anger towards Steele? Is he inarticulate?

frankj on September 22, 2006 at 8:05 PM

You have to see the discussion of this at DailyKos; the entire brain power of all the Kos Kids put together can’t seem to figure the sign out.

One of them basically asserts that Democrats own being black and the color blue, so it makes the sign too confusing.

What next? Black face on Steele? Oh wait, that’s already been done by them. Those unhinged donkeys only know how to fight dirty - especially when its a minority. To them, that’s the ultimate slap in the face - how dare they do this to the Dems? After all, it’s the Dems that are fighting for the minorities in this country - not those racist bigots, the Republicans.

I see Michael Steele’s campaign signs all over the place near my MD home. The sign is blue with Steele written in a silver, embossed font. I have started referring to him as “Blue Steele”. My husband started using the nickname, and everytime we pass one of the big 8 foot signs, my hubby strikes a Zoolander type pose for the man of Steele.

Pablo, I love this excerpt (about Mr. Mfume’s son):

Michael Mfume, a producer of the horror film “Ax ‘Em” and an active supporter of his father’s campaign, told reporters at the Eubie Blake center that he did not speak for his father.
“There is a saying by Billie Holiday. It goes: ‘A mother may have. A poppa may have. But God bless a child that has its own,’” he said.

This won’t just hurt the ‘daddy’ - this is BIG! The avalanche has begun to form, slowly, but rolling :)

Gateway pundit has more about the Democrats’ meltdown over Michael Steele and the KKK remark in the National Black Republican Association’s ad.
